So I have to apologize in advance (or perhaps maybe you should thank me- depending on how you look at it), but I lost about 80% of the content I filmed for this video and this was literally all that was left. Also, yes, I know that the end product is a little rough- I didn't spend an overly long time post processing the print since it was a test of the model and my first time ever trying to air...
3D PRINTED TRUSS SYSTEM!!!

YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHICH ADHESIVE WORKS BEST ON 3D PRINTS!!!
Переглядів 702 роки тому
Since starting with 3D printing, I've noticed that there are a number of ways to adhere two printed pieces together, but I wondered- which was the best? Which was strongest? Which was cheapest? Which looked the best? So I put together this testing video to determine the strength of four different options and cover some of the other details regarding the adhesion of 3D printed materials (in PLA)...

Perfectly legit. For me, tongs are a tool to use to support my efforts, they are not the result. Make it functional and effective and move on. Good idea friend.
good work sir! I'm designing a drone landing platform that has lights that fold up made from truss and its very similar to the same size of your shelf design. feel free to share any tips on designing it in fusion or anything you might feel I need to know. :)
Blackbear Forge has great videos on tong making. He made the kits from Ken's custom.
so you clamp the handle and allow the blade to protrude out past the jig so that the clamps dont come anywhere near the sanding belt.. and yes you then need to extend your tool rest. i made 2 extended the tool rest and worked ok still using i do think that freehand will be best lots of skill required.
FJB!
Hello Mr Wilkins, i am a structural engineer from South India. I am exactly looking to make a similar printed model for a PEB warehouse. Can these printed models be used to visualize deflections and load tranfer. TY
At 4 minutes you were still talking!!!! Why. You seem like a really nice guy but!!
Holes are always last so to get proper fit, learn to use how to hole the stock properly, keep ur work in front of u, learn to use a proper hammer
Thank you for representing the rest of us. Love your video... You make enough tongs you will be very good at it. Your Grandfather's anvil is so cool. If it could only talk.....I am also going to check out Amazon tongs. I love your idea of rebar tongs. I subscribed And please keep up the good work 👍
You're supposed to put the handle of the knife in there let the blade protrude on past the whole down parts think about it use your head a little bit
you have to have the steel all the way to the left or right
yes they get in the way so much that there is ver litle left of mine. plus i had to replace all the locking nut i sheared down to nothing lol
Do you think it is commercially viable to replace wood-framed trusses with 3Dprinted trusses? [I am assuming that it will be code-compliant]
I do think it's possible, but I can only print small-scale stuff now so hard to test
You did great! Thank you! 👍
Thanks for this review!
No dude hole is last. You might distorte it during forging
I would agree, however, it depends on what you're doing. On these I was only forging out the working ends and there was minimal risk of distorting anything. Also, since I was drilling the hole instead of drifting it like I normally would, it made more sense to drill them out while they were both flat and perfectly symmetrical to get everything nicely lined up. Additionally, I would point out that both options are acceptable, as you can continue to forge the working ends even after you have your final rivet set if you need to adjust or modify anything.
"Looks just like your penis.." .... "Yes, very similar.."
Great video brother. I wish I could have been there. 👊
It was a damn good time. Hopefully we all can put together another one soon, it'll just be a little more somber without the Donfather.
Hi father, merry Christmas to you and your family, question I need to buy one of that, can I heat a 9 inch blade knife with that ? How long is the shell
It's a smaller forge and I don't have the exact dimensions at the moment, but I have done 12" knives in it by heating different sections at a time. It's possible to go longer, but since it's small and only one burner, you need to work in sections.
I have the same exact one! Lol. I make my tang holes the same size as the hold down screws so its be held by the tang only and you have the entire blade to grind!! It took some tinkering around with it until I figured it out but its a keeper
I really like that idea. I may tweak the concept a little, but I may have to try that once I get back up and running. Thanks for the tip! 🤙
Can you post a link to the exact one you got in this video
Sorry for late response, I'm not very active anymore. I believe it was this kit. I'd recommend spending more and getting a better one a.co/d/ffvAL15
Put the nut on the back side screw on front
I think this jig is designed for a bench grinder (or could be used on one). There should be enough clearance if you take the wheel grinder guards off. (edit) now that I see how shallow you are trying to get, a bench grinder won't do the trick. oh well. Good video.
Good luck. How is the signage about recycling in the area? Are the recycling receptacles common or rare? How do the tourists get there and is there any possibility for a mass communication service for recycling? Just some questions I thought of.
Those are great questions. Signage is present in some locations, but not all. Most have trash receptacles, but only some provide recycling options. As far as the tourists, the majority drive here on their own, but I believe it would be entirely feasible to come up with some system to collect their recyclables as needed. Signage and receptacles could definitely be an option to look into as well, as you brought up. I'm confident arrangements could be made for installations at the parks that do not have them. I will definitely look into it. In regards to Don's previous question about collecting, I'd like to point out as well that even if I can't make filament out of all the trash, I'm part of a huge community of artists and makers that use all manner of recycled goods, so there are options other than municipal centers for processing types of waste that cannot be converted into printing filament. Tim, thank you for the constructive questions- I greatly appreciate that.
No, the only videos I've found have only one of the sets put together. Make a video for all the sets if you can.
I have a couple of sets I never finished. When I have the time and propane, I might go ahead and record that since you asked 👍
Your editing skills are really getting impressive brother. That Murloc is 10/10! The smithing is obviously a labour of love for you but the time and material investments are considerable and it's totally understandable to "make to order" rather than building a stock. You're an individual artisan craftsman, not a factory production line. Huge props on the kickstarter, remember that it's alright to take your time with these things, no one wants to see you overstretched or burnt out!
I appreciate it bredda! With the kickstarter, we will see how it goes. If it doesn't work out, I'll just go back to the drawing board and try again. Definitely not getting stressed out about it, just trying to get this operation going in the right direction ;D
Hunter does great work and Creations, made me a awesome bear with anvil and hammer
Thank you my brotha! Again, I'm so glad you like how he turned out!
Brother you do you and we support you no matter what you create.
Whst type of plastics can you use and how would you pickup plastics from folks, I go thru lots of plastic water and milk jugs etc?
Basically just set up a routine collection where I'd go pick up regularly, or let people come drop stuff off. Plastic bottles in particular are good items. From the research I've done so far, I believe I can use things like milk jugs, soda bottles, water bottles, etc. I'd collect other items too, but stuff I can't use, I would just take to the recycling center if I can't turn it into filament.
@@FatherForge I'll pass along for ya. Long drive to get my stuff
Just found your channel. Watching your videos. You are a great guy.
No need to much talking
Heck yeah brother. I love my bear.

I can picture an entire dungeon made like this! Very cool!
Too big for tabletop game scale, but still pretty cool. I want to do some fancy desks and such too and I really want to try one of those bookshelf portal scenic things soon.
its not made for full grinds only a half grind or scandi grinds
Yeah I noticed the way it's configured it would be next to impossible to bring the bevel up all the way to the spine evenly on both sides. If you changed the hardware, it may work, but on other grinds it works pretty well once you get it set up properly.
@@FatherForge I never do full grind anyway so would be great for me but I built my own jig.
Looks amazing! :D
Thank you! Trying to print a few more with different color variations. I really liked how this one turned out though apart from being a little rough.
I have that same forge and have been having troubles with it it seems that I can’t get it hot enough to do anything any advice would be much appreciated
I know they have changed a lot of stuff on this model since I first bought mine, but I noticed on mine that I had to really crank up the psi on my regulator to get to forging temps. Adjusting the space between the nozzle mouth and the floor of the forge is critical too. You may have to experiment a little and figure out what seems to give the best results. If all else fails, you may have a bad regulator or something and will have to contact the vendor, but in most cases you should be able to improve the heat by adjusting the nozzle distance and cranking up the psi. I ended up building a new burner for mine, as the one that came with it was not cutting it well enough.
Great vid brother Hunter
Thank you as always my friend!
Jacob S was the winner, but unfortunately, I have no way to contact them. If this is you, please respond, otherwise I will have to move onto another winner since I have no way to contact.
Well done on vids brother and digging your 3 d setup
Thank you man, I appreciate it!
I have a Simond Store forge, and the gas inlet they gave me doesn't fit on my propane tank. I've Teflon taped it, and spun it in both directions, but it's just not connecting. Did you ever run into any problems like this?
On mine it is really tricky to get the fitting properly seated in order to start threading it. Im not sure if that's your issue, but you could try to reduce the amount of tape (too much can cause misthread, too little will let it leak) and really apply inward pressure as you try to seat and thread it (reverse threaded for the internal fitting). Otherwise, I'm not sure and you may have to check with the manufacturer
@@FatherForge thanks brother. Giving it another try today. They sent me blue Teflon tape, so I'm on my way to find the right kind haha
@@johnnias4442 just make sure its gas rated. You can use the paste too. I like the paste better, but it's pretty messy
Thanks for the video. I bought a set and probably going to start on em this week.
They really are a great alternative to doing it from scratch if you haven't done many tongs or just need to see how to properly form them. Have fun!
Nice! That looks legit
Appreciate it! My wife was looking at these and I saw it and went "Hold up a minute... We can make that for less money..."
You could have tried to use welding clamps. Don't know if that would actually work or not, just a thought. Walter Sorrells has a video on UA-cam where he built a knife grinding jig you might want to take a look at.
I'll have to check it out. I ended up using a small c-clamp after this video and it worked out much better
@@FatherForge would love to know how you used the c-clamp
@@ViciousVapours I might make a short follow up now that I have a method for using this that works pretty well with the c-clamp. Stay tuned.
I bought one off Amazon a little nicer than that one for around $50. Not bad at all. Mine just has screw holes not slots and I don't use the blocks, I just screw the handle to the plate and let it sit on a screw on the other end. You could do the same. The blocks aren't needed at all. Just drill the handle scale holes and put the screw through that and just have the blade end sit on a screw,,, There were better versions to choose from on Amazon..
Yeah I ended up getting rid of the blocks. I got a small clamp and just used a screw for support and it works great like that 👍
put in a screw below the back of the blade to keep the blade from moving down. it only needs to rest om something to not move down during grinding.
That's what I ended up doing after recording this. I got a tiny clamp and use that to clamp the tang, then just use one of the screws under the spine. The blocks are worthless, but once you figure it out, it works pretty decent 👍
lol happened to be wearing my new smyrna beach t shirt when i found this vid
Just burn the shirt and forget about this place... It's like a black hole 🤣🤪
I have never made knives before but decided to give it a go. I bought this exact bevel jig and had no clue how to set it up. I'm glad I randomly found this video. Now I can return it and get a different one lol. Great video and absolutely helpful.
Hahaha! Yeah it's not great but it will work once you figure it out. I bought a tiny c-clamp to use with mine and now it works great after getting that and welding the handles on. Would have been nice if this one included a clamp and perhaps some instruction for the blade stops 🤷♂️
The lip on the bottom plate that protrudes out the back on the grinding side is probably supposed to hold your work flat.
It doesn't protrude, but after looking at some other models I was able to get it to work with a small clamp. You can use the screws that come with it as a rest for the spine of the blade, then you just clamp the tang. Worked like a charm once I figured that out 👍
for some reason, my regulator just will not fit into an amerigas tank thats exactly like yours. the threads are not long enough to engage with the inner threads of the tank.. is there anything you have to do to make it work?
I had trouble getting mine to thread too. I'm hoping this is a simple issue and not something more, so I apologize if the following suggestions are kind of stupid: You have to really apply pressure as you turn to make sure it threads properly, especially with teflon tape on the threads. Secondly, I spent about ten minutes on mine getting frustrated before I realised that the internal threads are reverse, so you have to turn it anti-clockwise to get it to thread. If you have tried everything and it still won't work, the only thing I could suggest is reaching out to the manufacturer and see if they will offer a replacement if the part is defective. I hope that helps and feel free to reach out if you still can't figure it out. You can always send me pictures and stuff on my IG account.
@@FatherForge i actually did end up talking to the manufacturer, and they said to remove the white, hard plastic gasket thing at the end of the regulator.. i guess its just there for protective purposes, and not actually a seal? i cut it off, and it works perfectly without any Teflon tape or anything so i guess thats al lit was! thanks for all the tips though regardless!
@@frogbear02 weird. I don't remember mine having that, but I also think they've changed a lot of the hardware since I bought mine 🤷♂️
