"The government fears the indoor eel farmer"......... what a moron! Eel pit is cool, you are not! Why do idiots have to bring politics into everything?
You could set up a constant live feed of the eel pit on your channel. Not sure how profitable it could be but would be cool as heck to see the fish live.
I was wondering about the plants. Your explanation makes sense to me. I'm a hobby gardener/indoor plant enthusiast and even putting them 5 inches outside of their ideal light range can kill the damn things. I agree that there's probably not enough light in there. If you REALLY wanted to have plants, you could do a full spectrum /"sunlight" flourescent bulbs from home depot. They basically do the same thing as grow lights, without the luxury markup. You can absolutely wire them into whatever timing system you've got. Godspeed you funky eel man
You have so much potential with that pond and I don't see a need to ever have to rehome anything especially seeing how you can adjust the height of the water. With plants you can get ones that you can keep in a pot or planter that can overhang into the water so you can move them when it's cold. I think it's awesome what you're doing I raise fish myself and love all the different kinds you have. And thanks for sharing your videos I really do enjoy watching them.
i could see the amount of turning space being an issue with a 6ft gar or longer, the height could be higher but the 2 ft of water rn seems like a good fit
You could look into java fern, it’s a great low light plant for the warmer months the good thing about this plant is that it does not root into the ground, so you can take it out in the colder months so it won’t rot.
The "only filtration," dude... that whole pit is biologically active, you have a TON of filtration FOR SURE. As long as you had circulation, you probably wouldnt even need that cannister... but Im sure you already knew that, lol. Im so envious of your setup. So amazing.
Other than blocks, you should make a pier-like structure around the perimeter to allow for even more space underneath…! Use plexiglass or something clear so we can see underneath 👍
Guess he doesn't want it too deep, because working and fixing might be more troublesome. Be he raising the water level to be at his knee level shouldn't be a problem.
U have became my favorite youtube channel man. I absolutely love what ur doing its so amazing. I'm a truck driver I live in my truck and I'm bored a lot of the time. But now I get to look forward to your videos. So thank you very much for entertaining me lol.
Thank you so much for this information! Have you considered putting any schooling small fish in here? Probably Gar food, but a big bait ball running around (maybe mosquito fish?) Would look great!
That's a really nice setup! It's like the best of both worlds. It's about as convinient as having a large aquarium indoors and not worrying about temperature fluctiations. And also this pit has an immense volume like in a pond, allowing you to have a lot of large fish. Just wow! Wish I had something like that)
You could also maybe stock it with some salamanders? A ton of native diversity in Kentucky/Tennessee and they often like hanging out in old pumphouses, cisterns, climbing the walls etc. You could also stock it with some sirens or mudpuppies! And crayfish! I'm surprised the blue crab survive there, I didn't know they can live in completely fresh water
At first I was like wtf is this eel pit? Then I realized it was exactly what I needed in my life, god damn, I could observe Sturgeon all day long, such a cool fish, the eel feeding was amazing, that guy came to say hi to the camera too.
6:00 wow that looks so cool! It’s like an under water cityscape 😯 Love your content dude! I need to do stuff but I’m so distracted by your videos lol 😂
You should definitely add a shoal of around 100 zebra danios, they just breed naturally and I reckon they’d keep you a constant cycle of snacks for the larger fish. Due to the scale and actual volume of the whole setup, I don’t think they’d made a single difference to the bio load too 🤣 Awesome video man, I’m addicted. Looking forward to more 😄❤️
Really cool and interesting set up. A couple of ideas that I think would improve the aesthetics. Firstly, I think a couple more lamps with some side lighting would help soften it. It looks a bit harsh with just a single downlight on it. Secondly, an airstone could help break up the light surface scum that is evident from the underwater shots.
Thank you for showing us the inter workings of your eel pit! Would you consider going live for a couple hours. Many of us would love to observe the fish and the natural sounds of the chamber.
When I was in high school I had a 55 gallon tank that I put 2 elvers (about 3 inches long) in that I hand netted from the Quinnipiac river here in CT. They grew to be about a foot long and I let them go back in the river where I got them. Funny thing is, I had never intended on having pet eels. I worked at a pet shop in high school and had lots of tanks but that day I was actually fishing in the river and just happened to look down and there were just loads of these little baby eels all around so I went home and got the net lol.
You can run a wet and dry filter above your eel pit in that room above, and put in a skimmer in one of the corners of your eel pit and install grow LED lighting in the ceiling of your eel pit as well.
I didn’t know that houses even had these, and someone put a river aquarium down there? Thank you eel pit, my understanding of eels and pits have been grown
Hey, have you ever considered putting in a plexiglass “corridor” on the edge of the tank? That way you could walk at full height and also raise the water level a lot, AND see all the subsurface action. Just a thought I had while watching:)
In Gibtown FL. Alafia river. We have a little heat wave and I found a frog in my water hookup today. Got a tote. He's chillin. Couldn't help but think of you lol. He's a tan suction type frog. He'll probably leave tonight. Lots of love. Thanks.
there are quite a few north American plants that would be suitable for the eel pit, some thicker stemmed ones should be able to handle the crabs, of course you should wait for the sturgeon to get bigger first, but I'm sure there is something you could use instead of fake plants
Bro I've been watching all your vids since I found your channel. Its so cool! I gotta watch this fully now to answer the questions I have. Love your vids bro and you're lucky to have that crazy rain tank, which I don't fully understand being from Britain, under your house
So I plan on buying a house here in the next year or 2 and since I've found your channel, one of the requirements will be a PIT! LOL Or at the very least some area I can build my own massive tank 😁👍
There will always be keyboard captains telling you how you could do better but in reality in America most people buy fish without any knowledge of cycling and buying baby black tip shark/plecos for 10 gal tanks. From what I can see you are killin it in a good way.
I might recommend some sort of cave, using the cinderblocks 3 high with some sort of covering on top, and a small glass window to look in To use less cinderblocks maybe some sort of plank across them could work Raising the water level should be exiting for new opportunities Note I am not a fish owner, but from a building perspective of layout this could work Also, like in other pond builds, some sort of artificial lily pads could work I guess
Grab a pleco or 2. They will grow nicely in there and clean it up really nicely. Plus their cheap when small. If they get eaten as babies, keep them in that smaller tank for a few months. Bring 1 out and see if they stay alive and repeat every 4-6 months.

Gyarados is an awesome name. I wish you had a Kingdra just for the dragon typing but I cant imagine a seahorse doing too well in the Eel Pit lol.

Automated water changes from rain and a sump pump is the coolest part of this for me.

My new favorite channel on UA-cam
I've been wondering exactly these questions since you began.
This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen! Really, really awesome! I'm jealous!
You could probably do well with Java moss down in the eel pit. Also an option might be potted aquatic plants so you can remove them easily.
Cheap gas alert meter might be a good idea to carry in with you just because of the confined space.
In Gibtown FL. Alafia river. We have a little heat wave and I found a frog in my water hookup today. Got a tote. He's chillin. Couldn't help but think of you lol. He's a tan suction type frog. He'll probably leave tonight. Lots of love. Thanks.

I think it’s under the garage, actually. It’s just a way to capture and keep rainwater.
Thanks for sharing this video. I really can’t get enough of the eel pit. I still think a few Chinese-High finned sharks would be a great addition…
Algae growing on things helps keep things clean. If you get it in the water, aka pea soup, just hook up a uv filter for the water, easy to use.
Those sturgeon are absolutely beautiful and fascinating specimens. Great video, keep it up

Damn i didn't know it was 16 in deep it looked more shallow to me. Love the content, long live the eel pit
So how’d you initially come up with the idea to turn this into an eel pit?
You say "pit" But you actually building an ecosystem in my eye, that's why you're kinda chill with Adding Chinese trapdoor snail
God I love the eel pit, always look forward to your videos.
Id love to see some plastic plants/Moss with some dim lights behind it. Beautiful place!
