Some dogs are just smart like that. My family has a labrador retriever who plays quite rough with most people. However since my dad had a stroke, she's the sweetest most gentle girl around him. When he got back from the hospital she kept booping his paralyzed hand and leg. Now that he joined play sessions again, she always brings him the ball instead of stopping slightly out of reach and making him fight for it, which she used to do with everybody.
I did SAR with K9s for 10 years. It takes a LOT of work to get a dog trained to this level, and few dogs are cut out for it, but it really is amazing to see them use their nose. Adam is always dropping gems the creators didn't think about. As a retired K9 SAR Handler I’m so proud of Shea & K9 Zinka for representing our community so well!! ❤❤❤ Great video Mark! Thank you for bringing awareness to K9 Search & Rescue.
I've been volunteering in a very similar way for a few years and it's nice to see this kind of work get talked about by someone larger than a local newspaper. The amount of expertise search and rescue handlers accumulate over years if not decades still stays, for the most part, overlooked and underfunded. Amazing video.
Did you hear about the 4 children that were lost for 40 days in Colombia after that little plane crashed? One of the SAR dogs was lost :( I'm glad the children were found but am very sad about the dog.
This guy takes 19 minutes to get to what we're all waiting to see but still keeps it entertaining the whole way through. Amazing video as always, Mark!
One of the big differences between a bloodhound and a German Shepherd or other similar breed is that the bloodhound sniffs the ground and follows the scent on the ground which is why they have a hard time when a person goes through water vs German Shepherds and similar breads which use the open air to find their target. Your scent sticks around for something near 72 hours on a calm day. Air sniffing dogs trained for search and rescue are not usually trained to find a specific persons scent. A police dog would be, but not most SAR dogs as they search for any victims. Some are also trained specifically to find dead things such as dead people for recovery operations in which case they can even find the smell of blood in a drain that has been washed many times, sometimes even with chemicals.
I ran from three german shepherd’s that were police dogs for SPD and got away … I had to wonder why and the only reason I can think of is my shoes had vents and I went through water … I was also heavily intoxicated and they never found me and I was in the area 😂❤ so idk how that fits into your theory on german Shepherds … btw they had my friend detained and knew what was happening on their end which I didnt learn til later … even after they released her because they realized there really was no law to hold her they were still out there for me til the end of their shift and I eventually went out a different way then anyone would ever expect but literally laid out there for hours
@@rachelharmon6489 they're not all human tracking dogs. they can see a target and go after someone or drug sniffing, but not searching. they're just all trained for different things

It’s super cool that she uses positive reinforcement to train the pup! That’s awesome! I trained military dogs and we used negative reinforcement and found it didn’t work nearly as well as positive reinforcement. The take away is simple. Love Is And Always Will Be THE ANSWER!!
I also learned something as such in psychology class that in behaviorism, the most effective way to get an animal to do something is through positive reinforcement as it's a lot more motivating
Negative reinforcement is actually as effective as positive reinforcement. What you're calling negative reinforcement is actually positive (and/or negative) punishment. This is well known and well studied. Reinforcement always reinforces.
I think the flaw with a lot of the distractions is that the intensity of the scent suddenly changes. All she has to do is pick the path closest to what she already followed
"All she has to do" ... hahahaha - Germans have a saying : "Das mach mal nach.". It seems appropriate here :) The dog/handler team is superb. - If dogs could talk, they could probably identify the last 50 people to sit in a seat.
I think it might have to do with more. I think the dog might be going off of the whole scent, and not just the pure scent of his body. The scent of the clothes he was wearing that have their own scents on them from whatever they've been near combined with his natural body scent makes a pretty unique signature to follow, so you can't just throw the dog off by leaving some BO somewhere, you need the "whole" smell.
@@oddball1336 It means "Try to repeat this" in an appraising way. I assume in English the equivalent might be sth. along the line of "You'll have a hard time trying to repeat that".
My takeaway is the strategy that might works is a combination of elevation change and a false trail. Get to a place where you can jump down, lay a false trail and then back track and jump down. The handler won't be able to easily pinpoint where false trail splits from the real one and identify the jump spot. Even better use a place that is windy so that the scent is all over the place. I'm actually curious if it would throw a trained dog off the scent.
Great video! In a time where it's easy to be stressed out, here comes Mark showing an attempt to outsmart a dog then prove how great dogs are. Thanks Mark! I needed this today!

Bit of extra trivia on facial recognition that I learned a while back: humans have a specific area in their brain solely dedicated to facial recognition, and if that specific area is compromised for whatever reason by disease or injury, then a human would be facial blind and loses the ability to recognize people. Even recognizing your close friends and family is a complete struggle.

Incredible! I trained with my dog for about a year so I can appreciate the hard work that goes into making a search dog. Here in BC, you have to re-qualify every year, and it’s rare to have a dog older than 4-5 years back on the scen trail. So as a handler, you basically have to start over. Kudos to Shae, and thank you for this fantastic video! Search dogs are the best!

Dogs smell the difference in people, but can also sense DNA. My kangal shepherd doesn't let people in my yard, but when he met my son who was 21 at the time was friendly towards a stranger for the first time. Also he allowed my dads brother in the yard. They know
I have helped training search and rescue dogs and its honestly mind blowing what they can do especially dogs trained for avalanches. its incredibly fun to see them at work especially when they find you. playing fetch is often used as a reword/payment when they find someone this helps encouraging the dog to track because it know that and the end of the trail there is some type of reward. dogs are simply incredible
That moment when you showed the handler telling her no but the dog saying “yes mom this is the way” and the trainer trusted the dog, that was when I realized these people do not get enough credit. Fabulous video again mark🎉!

Adam is always dropping gems the creators didn't think about. Like the Veritasium video where they're trying to hit a target from a helicopter and Adam casually comes in and say "did you forget the fins on the darts?"😅. As soon as he said that, and Derek said no, he knew it was a lost cause. (It's one of the worst videos from Veritasium). Also, mad props to Shae, she kept up without a sweat or ventilating and the doggo is amazing. Crazy how he rules out everyone present and goes straight to find the one missing.🤯
True pros!
"If she gets discouraged, let me know and I'll come down there"
Zinka: "YOU UNDERESTIMATE MY POWER"
literally😭
this time Mark doesn't have a HIGH GROUND.
Zinka after the chicken : “I gotta find him now. I want more chicken”
This was amazing. Zinka is a complete marvel, and Shay is incredible. Together, I don’t think any person could ever escape them.
the funny thing is that this video might help a criminal or two LOL
@@pvic6959 idk about all that the dog still found him
@@pvic6959 I thought that too, until I realized that a true criminal won’t have fans, drones with delayed take offs, and specialty RC cars, but even with those gadgets, you don’t stand a chance. What I learned is that a criminal might as well give up now because he/she is NEVER going to get away!
If they use a car a scent dog is pretty much useless
@@thecarrotsarecoming4711 that’s true. If they drive away, the dog can’t catch them.

i never thought that i would see mark rober shaving his feet off with a cheese grater to spray the scent out but here we are
I'm sure college students weren't at all afraid of a scent sniffing dog running around campus lmao
"By the way you might get visited by a bloodhound"

That’s one way to worry college students
The whole campus smells like Trees ;) gob ears!
And now we learned there's noO way to escape them...
Zinka being distracted by squirrels and food has the same energy as Mark being distracted by the swing 🤣
Word for word
You really copy and pasted the same comment
Only Mark can make "covertly pass around some of my scent molecules" not sound really weird
😂

I truly love Mark Rober, his ideas, & his team. The things he comes up with, the way explains them, & the filming are truly amazing & absolutely enjoyable to watch. Please keep this up for as long as possible!
As a retired K9 SAR Handler I’m so proud of Shea & K9 Zinka for representing our community so well!! ❤❤❤ Great video Mark! Thank you for bringing awareness to K9 Search & Rescue.
She looks like a Belgian
As someone who does volunteer SAR, I love working with yall, and you guys just help so much when it comes to finds.
@@annebruecks7381 And the dog even found the kids and was with them for a while.
TIL Bloodhounds are just a result of great branding. Awesome video as always.
Wow! Nice to see you here! Taking a break from pouring buckets?
Hey Cam!
I was just watching one of your videos @BlacktailStudio before finding myself here! You both rock!
That’s isn’t a blood hound it ain’t even a hound
Yes, i also love the branding. 💀
i love coming back to this when i´m bored.
Thank You Mark!
This guy takes 19 minutes to get to what we're all waiting to see but still keeps it entertaining the whole way through. Amazing video as always, Mark!
We wanted to learn about scent dogs. It's too bad your tiny brain only cared about the last minute.
For real 😂😂 Schools should learn to teach like this

🤓☝
jk jk did not know these facts
I ran from three german shepherd’s that were police dogs for SPD and got away … I had to wonder why and the only reason I can think of is my shoes had vents and I went through water … I was also heavily intoxicated and they never found me and I was in the area 😂❤ so idk how that fits into your theory on german Shepherds … btw they had my friend detained and knew what was happening on their end which I didnt learn til later … even after they released her because they realized there really was no law to hold her they were still out there for me til the end of their shift and I eventually went out a different way then anyone would ever expect but literally laid out there for hours
@@rachelharmon6489hi Rachel, I'm a police dog from the SPD and I just found you.
As an owner of bloodhounds that hunt, I can certify your comment about them not scenting air is 100% false
@@rachelharmon6489 they're not all human tracking dogs. they can see a target and go after someone or drug sniffing, but not searching. they're just all trained for different things
Thank you Shay and Zinka for your service!
This is some extremely useful information, thanks Mark! I can swiftly escape without getting caught!
I mean… can you? Dude used a gauntlet of tactics including robotic traps and they still found him
Lmao did you watch the whole video? No, you can't escape.
Zinca is probably thinking I've never had to find the same guy so many times, he needs to stop losing himself

Zinka's tail really gets wagging! It's cool to see something so helpful is so rewarding for her. I'm going to look up how these dogs and handlers are trained now!
Dogs actually love making people happy.
Seeing Adam just show up in people's videos is great. I remember he showed up on Veritasium a couple times. Great guy with excellent on-camera (and probably off-camera) energy.
And corridor crew
Удивлен что собака так сработала. Если это правда-то действительно потрясающая работа кинолога. Видео шик, вставка с Адамом порадовала.
Zinka's thinking, "This guy is a sweetie, but he sure gets lost a lot." Lol ❤
Cute how the twin target had to wipe the dog spit off her cheek!😂❤
I love how every superhero has a weakness ... squirrels for Zinka and a secret treehouse swing in the middle of the woods for Mark 😂😂😂 What a fun video and remarkable display of the dog's capability ❤
And pizza 😂
Chicken and cheese for Zinka
It’s super cool that she uses positive reinforcement to train the pup! That’s awesome! I trained military dogs and we used negative reinforcement and found it didn’t work nearly as well as positive reinforcement. The take away is simple. Love Is And Always Will Be THE ANSWER!!
Yas! 🎉 I'm a professional trainer and that's so nice to hear from someone formerly in the military
Absolutely bonkers! Extremely impressed by Zinka's abilities in the testing

I think the flaw with a lot of the distractions is that the intensity of the scent suddenly changes. All she has to do is pick the path closest to what she already followed
"All she has to do" ... hahahaha - Germans have a saying : "Das mach mal nach.". It seems appropriate here :)
The dog/handler team is superb.
@@photohoundsI'm trying to learn German, what does that mean?
@@oddball1336 It means "Try to repeat this" in an appraising way. I assume in English the equivalent might be sth. along the line of "You'll have a hard time trying to repeat that".
@@palodoxaliqua5809 the English phrase is "easier said than done"
Education disguised as entertainment, brilliant work!. Hands down best Mark Rober vid ever. More of these please .
Agreed 💯👍. Amazing job
Amazing replay value on a Mark Rober video. I've probably watched every video 3 times and I'm always blown away❤
Hey its your dry skin
He didnt just have to outsmart the dog he had to outsmart the dog owner aswell. Without her the dog wouldve gone down both ventilator paths and fallen for the the other traps the owner had pulled her out of.
Mark is the type of guy to commit a crime to see if a dog could find him while using complex science
Yup

Hey!!! Really enjoying the shorts.
There was someone on buzzfeed who did a similar series avoiding trackers.
these are the types of videos he's made. have you never seen any other videos? or you just mean there needs to be a channel that's just search dogs finding mark rober? either way, f*Kin weird ask... and so far, 367 people also agree with some weird, indirection fan-boy request..
Is that what dementia is?

I love ❤️ how Shay gives Zinka a lot of slack. Like eating the snacks is not what a puppy trainer would allow. But Zinka is a PRO so she can apparently be given respectful autonomy.
And she knows that Mark wouldn't be putting poison in the food, like crims being hunted might do.
PS: I thought she snickered at the food trap though, lol.
I think it's also because this is not a crisis situation. Otherwise she would not be getting that slack.

Shay is a friend and teammate. I’m glad she and Zinka are getting the recognition they deserve. 👍🏼
This is honestly one of the most incredible dog-human connections I have ever seen, and it’s truly just astounding. (:
I have seen shay and many other dog handler's with there dogs in person because I often get the chance to go help with the training of these incredible dogs.
This is the second time I'm seeing Mark being beaten in a challenge. The first time, he lost to squirrels. Great video!
I think I’m seeing a pattern
Mark is no match for nature
Mark: stops porch pirates
Also Mark: teaches you how to escape police dogs
unsuccessfully teaches
@@zedwpdeh, yes and no. He was unsuccessful, but he showed that the dog can be tricked or confused, and only the intelligence of the handler got her back on track. So what you really need to do is confuse both of them at the same time
I know is wrong to say but some poisoned chicken would do the trick 😵
Ya kinda shows you can’t escape

Having worked as a SAR K9 handler you made one mistake Mark. And you touched on them to give you the credit you deserve.
