  • Here is a short video showing how to replace the battery on a 2012 Mini Cooper Diesel. This is been done on a Diesel Mini but the procedure is the same for any R56 Mini from circa 2006 to 2015.
If your car is fitted with Start Stop technology it's very important to make sure you fit a deep cycle battery. Always make sure you fit the correct battery to your car or you can cause damage to the car.
For the vehicle in the video a 2012 Mini cooper Diesel WITH Start Stop the correct battery is a 096 AGM. If you are sure this is the battery you need you can buy the same battery I used from here:

You will only need basic tools to do this job, a cheap ratchet and socket set with a 10mm socket can be bought here:

A set of budget ratchet spanners including a 10mm spanner can be bought here:

If you take your old battery to a scrap metal recycling center they will dispose of it correctly and should pay you a small amount for the scrap lead it contains.
If this video helps you or you found something good in it then I'd be really grateful if you could take a moment to click the thumbs up and subscribe to the channel for more videos fixing broken things!
This is how I did the job, I am a just a car enthusiast and have basic tools. The video is meant as a guide for entertainment purposes only. If it helps someone that's fantastic but if in any doubt then always consult a professional mechanic before undertaking a project yourself.

Great video. Does the new battery not require to be registered?

Mate, I think you may need an OBD2 scanner that allows you to perform "Battery Registration." Or perhaps you don't have the IBS sensor on the negative cable? In that case the OB2 scanner is not necessary.

Thanks for that - Yes that's absolutely right. On this car it didn't require it but on some a battery replacement will show on the internal diagnostic by showing an amber image of a little car on a ramp on startup. Having changed batteries on BMW's this often happens with a code of CC-ID 415 so I would assume the code would be the same for Mini. It's easy to reset and register a battery replacement with any OBD diagnostic tool that supports service functions. Mine is an iCarsoft CR MAX:

It's really a great tool that can do all sorts for most makes and models.

Don't you have to reset the car's computer to tell it that the battery was changed? Battery registration...
