- This is a video showing you how to do a DIY Battery Replacement on a Mini Cooper R55/R56. This video was done on a 2010 Mini Cooper Clubman S. This car has the turbo charged N14 engine and a manual 6 speed transmission.
NOTE:
You will have to reset your clock and your trip mileage will zero out.
If your car requires battery registration you will need this ODBII tool. This is also a good tool to keep handy for reading BMW/Mini codes.

Thank you for the great video. Great review as it has been years since I changed the battery in an R56
Great video. Thank you for mentioning the little "box" on the negative terminal cable. Not finding one on my 2010 mini spared me the hassle of getting the new battery registered. Phew! Cheers, RG.
Glad it helped
Russel j was wondering if you ever had to get it registered or if it is still running good because I’ve heard some say even if they don’t have the ibs you still need to register it 🤦🏽♂️and mine died I don’t know what to do lol.
@@josemitchell-reyes3598 -- The battery was battery was not registered and has been working fine.
without that plastic door on the cover water can get in on top of the battery I re hinged my with Black tape and it held pretty good "cheap plastic hinges" I was looking for a battery on Advanced auto and they all said they needed to be Programed, mine doesn't have that box on the cable so thanks for Clarifying that. great and easy to understand.
Thank you very much
Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo !!!
In one of the coders i was playing with, it shows the type of battery that is in the car with a size rating and a type. This was active even though i definitely do not have IBS.
So you might not need to code the car with the new battery if you don't have IBS, but it might be a good idea to still set the battery size and type in case that modifies the charging parameters. (Lead acid and AGM have different charging characteristics. If you charge an AGM with a lead acid charge curve, it won't get as full as if it charge it with the right voltage curve.
So maybe not critical, but probably worthwhile if you can get a coder adapter and app for cheap enough.
FYI should run a couple of small wires to those terminals to the new battery then disconnect the old battery the floor kick module on the passenger side my scramble if disconnect total from power it's happened to me once and had to get it reprogrammed a bunch of lights would work windows wouldn't work etc just a FYI
Did register it though?
So you mentioned the battery registration box or extra cable. Would that only be on the negative side?
Correct. Only on the negative
Is it safe to assume that this overall procedure will work for the 2013 mini roadster? (Aside from the variety requiring a battery registration)
Should be close.
I have that battery registration box on the negative terminal. Do I have to register the battery if I’m just charging the original and putting that back in? Or is that only required for new replacement batteries?
No need unless it’s a new battery.
What would happen if you didn’t register a Mini or BMW that does have IBS? Reduced battery life?
Correct it will still use the old battery’s voltage I believe.
Did it start right up after 2 years sitting
Yes it did. Just added a battery.
Battery registration?
What is the battery type that you use ?
I did the Value battery from Advanced Auto for like $89.00 and it has been working great.
Battery, Group Size H6, 615 CCA
Safe to assume it started?
Yes it did, started right up.
Never mentioned the battery type ????
NOT GOOD !!!
