MINI Countryman Battery Swap and Breaking it!

- I knew the risks, I thought luck would be on my side. I was wrong! I broke my MINI Countryman R60 during a battery swap. Learn from my mistakes!

1. Research your car and battery replacement.
2. Plug in constant power backup (battery saver).
3. Access battery
4. Unplug negative first!
5. Clip on power saver onto negative and positive
6. Unplug positive to the old battery
7. Install new battery in reverse.
8. Register new battery
If in doubt, have a dealer install it.
I love your 'nitrous tank'. :) Sorry you had problems with the install. I know how frustrating that can be. A while back I decided to replace my spark plugs and managed to break one. After several days of trying to extract it, I had to have my car towed to my local repair shop (not a dealer but excellent at Mini repairs.) Such fun!
Oh wow! Always an adventure when we work on our own cars! I almost went with the tow-to-shop option but I ended up finding another way to get it resolved.
I did my own battery swap on our 2014 Countryman R60. I used a 12 volt jumper battery with a UBD connector. This I plugged into the UBD port to maintain power to the vehicle and electrical settings. Changed out the battery (Non OEM -AGM) and registered the battery afterward. I'm sure I was just lucky because this is a known issue. I received written notice of the foot well warranty extension. hope I never have to use it. The dealership was 2 hours away and wanted $700+ for a new battery..... Ludicrous!
Wow. Bad luck bud :(
When I swapped mine, I hooked up one of those new small 12v jump start packs to the leads before disconnecting them, (wrap a clotharound the Pos terminal in case it touches anything) then left it connected till the new battery was in, so there was no interuption to the supply, then connected the battery and removed the jump pack. I'd seen probs with other cars, so was a bit wary. It sucks the way the manufacturers are taking the basic repairs out of Joe publics hands, just so you have to take it to a dealership.
Yeah I thought about doing it but obviously skipped that thinking I would be careful. Haha lesson learned!
@@TheMINIVlog Been there. Done that (more than once :)
I don't understand what everyone's deal is with this....any time you work on anything electrical you're supposed to disconnect the battery.... how does having a constant source matter if the battery needs to be registered
Another thing that was observed when you did the swap was the original (or the current) battery was a submerged acid battery and the replacement was an AGM - so when you went to register it noting that the capacity and type was different may have made a difference in your BCM weirdness. Also apparently you can put the wiper arms in "service" position and not have to remove them (would have been handy to know since I had to remove my wiper arm yesterday before seeing that this was an option). Anyway, I'll be watching the follow up video here now...
Great comments Scotty! Great points
Just bought my daughter a 2014 Clubman S this last weekend. If i had known this issue i wouldn't have made this purchase.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
I recently had a battery issue with my Mini Cooper. It was one step short of a nightmare. So many plastic pieces, including the air filter had to be removed. I ended up recharging the lame battery enough to drive it to the garage. My car couldn’t be jumped. The local auto parts store sold me a battery that didn’t fit. That was $235. Luckily I was able to return that.
Like I said…..nightmare!! The end result was just fine, thanks to the garage, my neighbor and a few friends from work. And $400.
That is quite the adventure you had there. 😬
Any chance you can let me know what OBD2 dongle you’re using? I’m sick of the warning screen every time I turn my 2022 Countryman on! Thanks man, really enjoy your content.
I have this one currently. www.amazon.com/dp/B08NFLL3NT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Good info. Only thing still throwing me off is your mention of not using an OEM battery. If it matches in battery capacity (Ah) I can't imagine it mattering. Plus you registered it, so that was correct. I'm wondering if your ONLY mistake was really just the full disconnect from power. Glad it worked out.
Yeah I don't think the non-OEM battery was the problem but had I gone OEM battery, then MINI would have put it in and they would have broken the car(or not) and not me! I agree it was probably the sloppy full disconnect from power.
I tried to flash tune my MINI once and bricked the ECU. Cost me $100 to tow it to MINI and $150 for them to reset it. Learned my lesson 😂
Haha oh boy! I still have not learned my lesson. maybe one day!
Always remove the negative terminal first and connect it last. Basic automotive safety.
Your videos are not showing up in my feed. I just noticed I didn't have the bell on so I clicked that but you should still show in my feed. 🤷♂️
Oh no! Maybe try an unsubscribe and re-subscribe? I don't know why they wouldn't be!
BTW, I thought you should always remove the ground first and replace it last.
I totally know that and I was just too focused on camera setup and angle and audio that I was not paying attention when I did it.
Thanks . . . I havent changed my battery but have identical issue with Lights blinkers windows . . . I had to jump start the car/battery - forgot how to resolve this ? Full charging ? replace 3 yr old battery ?
Its not clear about the extension of the warranty you mentioned ... mine is a 2010 68k miles, is there extended warranty for this issue ? My mechanic has not mentioned it.
Regards for the efforts.
Take a look at the video description, there is a link in there about the recall.
Go to harbor freight and buy a car battery charger. Get the $70 one (viking) the cheaper ones arent chargers theyre maintainers not the same. The display doesnt work leave it charging for 3.5 hours.
That's not too bad. Had to replace the battery in my mini f55 and that thing is NOT accessible, absolutely ridiculous location.
That module dying when swapping out the battery is some real bullshit, must be a serious design flaw with it to fail if power if the battery is disconnected.
Yep. I think they know that because they keep extending the warranty on that module for the minis/bmws that have it.
I don’t see the info on the scanner dongle in the description
This is G , no dongle talk😆
Does it work on a mini cup 2016?
Im confused so if u dont get a oem battery ur car will die??
no, non-oem is fine. You just have to be careful when changing it out so you don't cause the computer to get improper power and brick it. I believe the dealers plug the car in to alternative power when they do a battery swap to avoid that. But many have changed the battery without breaking the computer, but it's a risk when you do it yourself for sure.
How is the FRM3 failure not a safety recall? If you need a jump, your car headlights, taillights, windows, wiper and speedometer stop working. WTH. How is this so common too!
So, I found my way to this video because I'm looking to replace the battery in my 2016 Countryman S. Based on what I'm reading, this recall notice does not affect models later than 2014, correct?
2017
how much the battery cost?
Its the footwell module!!!
indeed!
yikes, this is one heck of a glitch....
Yeeeeeep!
Oh no
I have read low voltage starting can do this to the module I to replaced the battery and have a blown module I doubt this is our fault for replacing a battery these are a known issue and there is no solution yet. BMW has dropped the ball on this one recall is from may still no fix what a joke. I am going to send mine to get fixed and get the car running again but this is the last mini.
what year ?
It's a '13
or just buy same spec battery and wont be any proble4ms ...
I just changed the battery in my 2010 Cooper Works Mini. Now, headlights always on, no blinkers, no seat belt alarm (making all the other bad stuff seem worthwhile), and other issues yet to be discovered. WHAT A PIECE OF PURE BRITTISH SHIT.
It's actually German but manufactured in the UK.
Thick !!!
Hey you seem like a nice kid. First of all your videos are way too long. Only your mother would want to watch you on screen that long. The second you accomplished nothing. Everyone finding your video wants to replace their battery without further issue. All you do is just demonstrate the wrong way to do it.
I am hardly a kid in my late 30's. Would be awesome if my mother did watch my videos! This is more of a vlogging channel. I do have instructional videos scattered throughout though. I will take your feedback into consideration.
