Seriously, Donna Noble can be noisy, sure, she's sassy and all that...but my god, she's the Doctor's best friend, she doesn't want him like a boyfriend, she doesn't want anything from him, she just wants... to be with him, and travel, forever. She was willingly giving her short life to travel in the TARDIS, like a FRIEND, like a companion.
Not at first, though. That's her problem. The fact that she sexually assaults him in episode 5. Even Moffat thought that was a mistake in hindsight. Later on, when she finally gets herself sorted out (with Rory, that is), she gets better, but the show gets worse :(.
What I find crazy about what they did with Donna is that they had an AMAZING comedian actress and they gave her some of the most depressing storylines with the fires of Pompeii, planet of the ood and her exit yet she still made it work so well. I love Catherine!!!!
I don't care for Catherine Tate's style of humor and after Runaway Bride I was really concerned that I was going to hate her, but the series really turned me around on her character, letting her take on dramatic bits and how seriously she handled being thrust into the Doctor's world was really great
Catherine Tate is an astounding actress. She can switch from the comedic to the profound at the drop of the hat. By far the best actress of the main companions.
Yeah, but 'Partners in Crime' MORE than made up for all that! The depressing story arcs early on made her less shock prone and far more useful in the 'Stolen earth' saga.
Casting against type has worked well in Doctor Who. Jon Pertwee was an established comic actor/comedian, but he played his Doctor straight and was superb in the role. Sylvester McCoy, an instinctively comic performer, only came into his own after he quit clowning around and turned all dark and mysterious on us.
Love this interaction: Jack sees Rose and Mickey hug. Jack: "Aw, how come I get none of that?" Doctor: "Buy me a drink first." Jack: "Such hard work!" Doctor: "But worth it."
FINALLY a list like this where people actually include people like Mickey, Rory and Nardole, its pretty annoying to see major characters be left off because they aren't female/the main companion
I know rory is a companion but hes like a half companion like he only travels with the doctor sometimes not all the time that's probably why some people didnt include them
I'm only a couple minutes in this video, but I'm saying right now...if Wilf isn't in the top 10 at the least, I'm gonna riot. Ok, be back in a bit... (20 minutes later) ...OK. We're good.
Gnome Saiyan 20 minutes later? Please tell me that the last entry lasts for 13 minutes because Wilf and Donna are just the best characters not just in doctor who but in existence
What I liked about Rose for The Doctor was her fun with him. The teasing. "What sort of date are you?" She razzed him. "Alright you right wad, I'll buy." The 9th Doctor was such a war damaged individual. Rose inspired The Doctor to find his heart again. She reminded him of the man he was before the painful Time War shredded him so badly. Rose reminded The Doctor that he Enjoyed his life.
21:50 my headcanon for Jack's contrasting attitude between Dr Who and Torchwood is that whenever he's with the Doctor his optimistic sense of adventure kicks in and deep down he believes everything will work out in the end whenever the Doctor's around to save the day
Badre Bally To my mind, it's having to be the Doctor stand-in in Torchwood is just way too much for Jack. He's over his head and he knows it, but he knows somebody has to do something and he's the only one in the room with anything approaching the experience of the Doctor. So, he buckles down and tries to do the right thing but he recognizes that he's just not up to the task which accounts for his world-weariness
That makes a lot of sense. He also could put up a front around the Doctor bc of his pride/ego. He admires the Doctor and maybe doesn't want his friend to see that he's struggling or can't keep up.
I feel like Martha is the only modern full-time companion I wouldn’t mind coming back. Purely because she’s not a huge fan favorite, and she was so underutilized. If the show brought back Martha, my immediate thought wouldn’t be “Oh boy, we’re getting this desperate, huh” but “Oh hey, someone must have a good idea.” She’s up there with Cpt. Jack for me on the list of companions who are so ripe for material that I’d welcome them back for another ride. There’s so much story potential for Martha and the fact that she isn’t a huge emotional hang-up for the Doctor means their dynamic would feel fresh and interesting all these years later. Unlike the Brigadier or Sarah Jane, her coming back wouldn’t feel like a pang of nostalgia, but an interesting spin where you wonder what she and the Doctor are setting up, like there must be some plan involved. I’d be all-in.
UltimateKyuubiFox it would also make more sense for Martha then other companions because, during her exit scene, she gave him her phone and told him to listen for when she calls (like she does during The Sontaran Stratagem), so it could totally work for her to call again because something is up on Earth.
To be honest, she's the only main companion who could come back. Rose is stuck in a different universe, pre-metacrisis Donna is dead, Amy and Rory are stuck in New York in the past, Clara is probably too busy flying a diner through space with Ashildr and Bill is a space oil alien now
Yes, Sarah Jane was one of the greatest companion, the Brigadier THE greatest, most loyal companion (next to Jamie) but hey...they're not part of the hip, kool 4 skool new who, why bring them back ever?
Um... i know it would take some serious twisting but are we really ignoring the fact that Amy pond is the singular most amazing companion the doctor has ever had!?!?!?!?!?!
I agree. Donna is obviously the best and I think a lot of it is down to Tate's experience as a performer. She clearly has a great sense of comedy but her dramatic ability shines through. With some companions the performers' inexperience has not helped and this was very true with Freema Agyman in some stories.
Donna was my favorite, too. I liked that her title "Best Temp in Chiswick" actually came through in several episodes (noticing a numerical sequence, checking the sick days log, etc). For me, a good character demonstrates their occupation; what they did before the story opens actually affects their choices and actions.
I'd love love to see Captain Jack back, idk I obviously haven't seen her yet but I have a feeling he'd play really well off of Jodie whereas I do feel like he'd have felt out of place with Smith and Capaldi.
I don’t agree that he’d have felt out of place with Smith. Capaldi yes I think so however, I 100% agree that if he returns with Whittaker he would fit right in
I feel like he could possibly have been a good (not great) contract to Capaldi, if Jack wasn't as angsty as in Torchwood and was the same happy Jack from the main Who series. He would be fantastic with Jodie though. They don't even have to reference Torchwood, they could retcon the whole last season of Torchwood and just have Jack slowly becoming the Face of Boe. I really hope he makes an appearance in Wittacker's run even if he doesnt stay on for more than an episode.
This isn't the most popular opinion going around, but my favourite (for 'main' companions who are around for a whole series at least) is definitely Martha, because she's not prophecised or a huge part of the mythos or the show she hasn't had her whole life from childhood defined by the Doctor. She's an ordinary human who's every bit as able to save the world as The Bad Wolf or The Impossible Girl, and I think that's a big part of what the show's about. Bill is close, for the same reasons and honestly it might be a tie when series 10 comes on UK Netflix and I get to rewatch it
Why Martha Jones is probably the best companion from New Who: Donna, Rose and Amy didn't want to leave "Spaceboy", "My Doctor" or "Raggedy Man", but they didn't have a choice. And Martha Jones just walked away. People always say that she was too weak but her family had just gone through a year of hell. A year of being TORTURED, a year where they were threatened with DEATH every day, a year where they saw horrors uninmaginable. They needed her. Martha herself just went through a year of hell. A year where she was hunted every day, where there was a unit tasked with doing nothing but tracking her down. She saw an entire country burning in front of her eyes. She went through a year where she witnessed more death and destruction than any person should ever have to. A year where she saved the universe not with magic TARDISMetaCrisisUniverse crack powers but with her own brain, cunning, determination and her own will. She needed her family. She had also just spent a year in love with a man who didn't love her back. A man who was often dismissive of her thoughts and feelings, a man who she had to watch fall in love with another woman and accuse her of being his executioner after two months of going from being a doctor to a maid in an era when she was thought of as less than a person because of the colour of her skin. Then three more months of working in a shop to support him. Her thanks for those things was a simple hug. She went through a year where she TIME AND AGAIN proved herself, delivered the impossible and yet was judged unworthy just because she wasn't someone she'd never met (Rose). And THEN the year of literal hell. Put yourself in her shoes for a minute. She made absolutely the right decision for her own mental and emotional well being and for her family's. She still cared for him. She gave him a lifeline back to her, but she couldn't survive in that enviroment anymore, having her self esteem torn down every day after she had proven over and over just how amazing she was. Just remember how during the year that never was that woman sold Martha out, but when things were back to normal, Martha brought her flowers because she understood why the woman had done it and she still respected her. Even as so much of the fandom was hating on Martha like mad, Martha Jones herself refused to villainize other women for the choices they made in difficult circumstances and the more brilliant and wonderful Martha is, the sadder it makes people look for hating on her. See, Rose saved the universe when she was practically a goddess. Donna saved the universe when she was half Time Lord. Clara saved the universe when she stepped into a time stream and got seperated into trillion versions of her own self. I am not even going to start on the Ponds and River or any other companions after that. Anyway, my point is that the brilliant Martha Jones saved the universe as an ordinary person with normal abilities. No plastic-ness, no timey-wimey-ness before meeting the Doctor, no seeing into the Time Vortex, just her and her human abilities. And she risked more than an other companion (at least in New Who). And that is why Martha Jones is the best companion out of them all. I understand if she isn't your favourite, but I can't understand if you think she was just the weak one who came after Rose and was whiny and left just because the Doctor didn't love her back. So let's all appreciate Martha Jones, introduced to us by giving away the last bit of oxygen so that helpless people would survive even though she was dying too. Martha Jones, who did unneccessary jobs for minimal money, getting insulted and being alone. Only to protect the human Doctor. Martha Jones- a gun was held to her head and she was blackmailed to be killed if she wouldn't give informations about the Doctor away. But she refused saying something and betraying him. Martha Jones, who had to deal with aliens and death and tragedies, all on her own, when the Doctor was human. Martha Jones- the Doctor trusted her so much to give her his very own Time Lord existence, his life and the safety of the whole humanity. Martha Jones, who called her mother when she was about to get sucked into the sun. She only talked to her, asked her how she was doing and that she loves er. Just to comfort herself about the incoming death. Martha Jones, who walked the earth on her own fir an entire year to spread the story about the man who has saved everyone while he was indoor camping with his evil boyfriend (I'm sorry, I needed to). Martha Jones, who brought flowers to a woman who betrayed her. Martha Jones- she defended witches with a Harry Potter spell on the stage of a Shakespear play. Martha Jones, who left the Doctor because she loved him. But she did it for her own well-being. Martha Jones, everyone. If you're still not convinced, read "The Story of Martha", it covers a lot about what happened to her during the year that never was.
The problem with Clara is that she's kinda like a fan fiction character. She's just over powered and overly capable and her death/resurection was the stuff of pure fan fiction.
She's cuter than Smurfette but Moffat just kinda tried to hard to make her cool and mysterious. Companions don't have to be cool, powerful amd mysterious THAT'S THE DOCTOR'S JOB!
The crush I hate. However breaking the rules depends on the character and their relationship. Because if he broke the rules for Donna I'd completely understand
Donna is my favorite too! I miss her so much when I watch Doctor Who, and I love going back and re-watching her episodes. Right below Donna would be Amy/Rory and Bill. As you said, the trio of Doctor, Amy, and Rory is so much fun, and their character growth is great. And Bill just was so energetic. I feel like she never reached the full potential of her character, but it was so much fun following her adventure!
You know, David and Catherine are making a Doctor Who audio book!!! I think it's coming out in March 2019 or 2020 (bad memory). You should check it out!!! :')
My favorite is, and most likely always will be, Rose Tyler. She was my introduction into Doctor Who more than any of the Doctors. While I can understand that some people don't enjoy the romance aspect of her and Tennant, the thing that makes me love her the most is how much she felt like an actual person who makes mistakes and tries to make up for them. When she and the Doctor(particularly Eccleston) fought, it was about her disagreeing with his morals or about her making a decision that was sometimes stupid, but a lot of times showed her heart. In the Unquiet Dead, Rose isn't willing to allow the Doctor to make use of the dead bodies and she isn't going to just listen to him because he's the Doctor. When she makes mistakes, like in Father's Day, it's because of her heart and selfishness and humanity. Most people can try and tell me that what she did was immature and stupid, but removing the paradox that it caused, nobody can tell me honestly that they wouldn't have at least tried to save their parent if they had died when they were in infancy. I'm not going to lie, I'm a bit biased and my introduction to her character and the age I was when I first saw Doctor Who come into play when talking about characters. But, I remember being 12 and crying my heart out watching her departure at the end of season 2. Say what you want about her, in my opinion, Rose Tyler is the character that showed me the most humanity and heart and was by far the best companion.
I was 32 when I first saw Rose. But she was my entry to Who as well. The character was only 19 so I saw her times of being selfish more as her learning and growing. She became an adult traveling with the Doctor. And in some ways she was more mature than other companions. More than once she took responsibility for her choices. When the Doctor would say he put her in danger, she always responded "I made the choice. This is not on you." That's what I loved about her most.
I could write a LOT about why she as a person/character is great but I think there's enough said. As a part of a plot though, I think she was a great intro companion because she felt... really human/normal in a way some other companions didn't. She became something more, but at the start she was really relatable and felt like... she acted in a way that I (and probably other people watching the show) would or think they would act if they had the chance to travel with the Doctor. But she's also not some sort of bland badly written teen fiction 'live through the main character' girl and she's super fleshed out and also just super kind (yeah I know that goes back to the first thing I said I wouldn't talk about but... she ALWAYS tried to relate to or care about the people she ran into in a way that contrasts with the doctor at times and its just so nice to watch) Also I really liked how she had all the back on earth drama/storyline, which I know some people don't like as much.
Speaking as someone who hasn't seen any of the post-Clara companions yet (though I plan to!)... 5. River Song 4. Amy Pond & Rory -Williams- Pond 3. Jack Harkness 2. Martha Jones 1. DONNA NOBLE. Sarah Jane is, of course, in a class by herself as far as companions go. In an all-time list she'd definitely make the top.
Donna's story is the most tragic story they've ever done and is far more tragic an end than any death could ever be. That last episode still makes me cry. I love Donna.
What imo they should've done with Clara: Get rid of modern day version and impossible Keep the smart and flirty Victorian version as a character, have her decide to leave the doctor, and then we see see her as a Dalek.
Great list. I think Martha is underrated by a lot of fans, but I really liked her. She’s smart and compassionate and has a real sense of self worth not tied to her relationship to the doctor. I love Jack and River Song. (The River Song storyline is one of the only situations where I genuinely liked a Doctor/Companion romance. Mostly not interested) Bill is awesome- probably in my top five. I also did kinda squee when you named Missy 3rd. I actually wasn’t thinking of her but went “ Of course! Perfect” Can’t argue with your top two.
Tracy Dale i would have to argue with missy as a companion, i LOVE missy...BUT... the 1 episode she actually properly travelled in the tardis along with the doctor she didn't really behave as a companion, more of a temporary replacement to see if she had what it took to be the doctor.
YES, YES, YESSSSSS!!! (actually, you spoiled me before I watched the video, but I'm so hyped I don't even mind.) Their chemistry is just so perfect! And the actors are great, and the storytelling was too, I just ASDFGHJKLHYPEHYPEHYPE!!! (Sorry, I'm not usually like this, but I just have a hype phase, so please don't take it the wrong way.) I hope you don't mind I'm a little bit overreacting.
I liked that too :) A definite bit of the old Xavier/Magneto thing going on there too, where yes, they are enemies, but they're also old friends who have been through a lot together & Michelle Gomez's performance plus the chemistry between the two is fantastic
Rose Tyler. I respect everyone's opinion but I will never understand the hatred a lot of DW fans feel for Rose. I connected with her as a character so much, her lust for adventures even though they are very dangerous (I mean every companion has it but she was just something else), her stubbornness, her big heart. She just had such a special vibe, I always felt such warmth in her presence. Her strong sense of empathy..and the way she admired the Doctor! She understood his nature to the core. I can get that a lot of fans don't like the relationship she had with the Doctor because she loved him in a romantic way..but that made me connect with her even more because I sympathize with her and to be completely honest the reason for that is: If I would get the opportunity to travel with such a remarkable man, (an alien so smart and so strong, so full of power which he only uses in good intentions like having fun and saving the planets, saving so many lives, saving your own life a thousand times), I think I simply could not NOT FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM. For me it seems quite impossible. And that's what people do, they fall in love and it hurts them but they still do it. It's not something you can control, it's something you feel. I wouldn't even say it's that conventional type of romance about Rose and The Doctor, it's something so special that it doesn't even have an expression, I believe. They would have died for each other, no doubt. Yes, they both suffered a lot because of their love, but it was so so worth it. That's what was so human about Rose. She was so ordinary but so extraordinary at the same time. The Doctor didn't love her so much for nothing, I think she was like an embodiment of everything good that's in humans and that's why The Doctor loved her and it would be quite unfair to Rose if they didn't show The Doctor's grief after their separation...I agree it damaged Martha's character quite a lot, especially since they made her have a huge crush on him too right away, which only made her miserable and it didn't help him either with all the guilt he was feeling, but I think it would have been quite unrealistic to have all these people travelling and experiencing so many beautiful and great adventures without every now and then showing their most human trait- ATTACHMENT.
Fun ranking but I gotta disagree on Jackie, she was annoying and she is vapid and selfish but she is one of the companions that truly feel like real people. She is vapid and selfish but she truly loves her daughter and developed a familial relationship with Mickey and she just felt real! I know tons of people like this and her character helped to cement the RTD era in my heart because I truly felt like these characters were real.
YES! I also just loved, unlike Coucil of Geeks, the family / modern day england life aspect of rose's time. It just fleshed out Rose as a companion, and also, all of the other character from her life and actually managed to get everyone to evolve and shift even if they weren't always critical to the time/space adventure of the episode.
My 10 favorite 'Modern Era' companions in reverse order are... 10) Clara Oswald 9) River Song 8) Amy Pond 7) Rory Williams 6) Sarah Jane Smith 5) Martha Jones 4) Nardole 3) Wilfred Mott 2) Donna Noble 1) Bill Potts
I know writing this is super controversial but I love Clara, not only is she my favorite companion but my favorite fictional character of all time. I just adore her so much and I honestly relate to her so much. I think she had character from the beginning tbh, I know that‘s unpopular. But I always saw her as someone who was very sad inside - losing her mother - and tried her hardest to be a magical and impossible girl even before meeting the Doctor. For example, having the book with 100 placed to see - it just felt like she wanted to be an adventurous person, she wanted her life to be a story. She wanted to be bigger than life. Then the Doctor came and made all that possible. Then she lost Danny and I always felt like she blamed herself and was so sad and guiltridden and became addicted to adventure as an escape. She was even suicidal, which is something no one ever comments on - but it was made clear in Last Christmas when the Doctor told her they‘d die if they stay and she didn‘t care. Then she actually died in FTR and she literally said „maybe this is what I wanted“. A classic example of someone putting themselves at risk and being reckless on purpose and trying to be someone else (in her case the Doctor) as a form of extreme escapism. I just think she is so so so much deeper and better written than most people give her credit for. I really do adore her.
I also really like her and I'm not really bothered by how overpowered she might be. There is a lot of potential in her that kinda got lost, because her writing wasn't very continous- like her intelligence seemed to change inbetween episodes, just for comedic value and plot points like the impossible girl or having the great intelligence downloaded into her brain were just never mentioned again. And I feel that if those points were properly handled, maybe she wouldn't appear as over powered as any people see her. But she is witty and smart and and charming and could work independent if she had to.
Oh, brilliant! Comprehensive, intelligent, funny and heartfelt. Donna is my all time favourite as well, with Bill and Martha close behind. I am sure this will become one of your top ranked videos! Thanks for the fun journey :)
I still think Bill's sexuality was referenced a little clunkily (although I appreciate that could be a result of normativity) but anyone who says she has no character clearly just wasn't giving her a chance.
Yeah, it's a result of normativity. She mentioned it less than other characters mentioned their sexuality in similar blocks of time. Just with a gay character, it's more noticable. I like, too, that they addressed her own feelings on normativity with the Romans.
You get a lesbian character to give a gift of a rug... I'm sorry but surely you've all heard the nicknames given to lesbians... I simply think that if she wasn't gay, she'd have nothing memorable aside from being African American or whatever... I get bored easily with her character.
Laurence Gill yeah I really liked bill, she was just a normal person. I wish she died as a cyber man though instead of being brought back by water girl. Having a companion to die in vain would put some nice spice into the show like the old doctor who.
Bill literally has a line where out of nowhere she just tells the Doctor 'by the way you know I like girls right' and he says 'yeah' and then she just walks off. Lmao.
Donna's my favourite companion too. Btw wouldn't Vastra, Jenny and Strax count as companions? They all appeared in several episodes and all travelled in the TARDIS in A Good Man Goes to War and Vastra is shown travelling in the TARDIS again in The Snowman.
Same! They could do so much. She could interwine with the Doctor the same as Missy/Master did!!! I can see some beautiful stories... but lets leave that for after Chibnall shall we... unless eh's serious about the whole Timeless Child thing and then I'm out!
I don't have a list, but my top 3 for NuWho companions (no specific order) would be Donna, Jack and Bill. Really love the inclusion of Missy in your list, and I agree that adventures between 12 and Missy would be great.
In terms of the MAIN companions (the billed ones in the opening credits), my list would go from worst to best: - Rose: Liked her when the show came back and i was 8. Now that I'm older, I really didn't like the seemingly forced romance they pushed in Series 2. Actually agree that i prefer her with Eccleston than Tennant. - Martha: Probably would be higher if she'd have had more than 1 series but i still really like her character. The main point that makes her stand out much higher than Rose for me is when she actually goes back into the TARDIS in LotTL and tells the Doctor why she's leaving and stands up for herself. Really wish the show hadn't treated her so poorly. - Rory: Loved the dynamic between him, Amy and 11 and as his own character I love how much of a badass he becomes purely through how devoted is to Amy. He brings out the best in her too. - Clara: Completely agree that she should have stayed dead in Face the Raven, but i won't hold Hell Bent against her because i still do enjoy what they tried to do with her character in series' 8 & 9. Didn't care for her dynamic with 11 but loved it with 12. I also like that she's also not perfect and how it acknowledges this. They know they shouldn't travel together anymore, yet she was addicted and he didn't want her to have to leave. And it lead to her death. It's beautifully tragic. - Bill: Really wish we could've had longer with Bill. Like you said, i love how youthful and inquisitive she is with everything, and again she has a great dynamic with 12. The fact that this young woman and this 'old' man develop such a lovely friendship with each other through his teaching her is really fun to watch. I did like that she was openly gay, but i also like that it didn't really matter because it didn't become this big thing. Also, her ending didn't feel cheap (*cough* Clara), it felt like a satisfying end due to the fact that it had already quite cleverly been set up. Donna: Oh Donna. I adore Donna. I feel like if we'd have gotten another series with her she'd probably be my number one because her development and her character overall was just so fun and enjoyable to watch. Catherine Tate's performance was phenomenal and i still miss Donna to this day. By far the best companion in the RTD era and agreeing with what you said, i love the best friend dynamic. Tennant & Tate were a phenomenal duo. - Amy: I do feel I'm slightly biased towards Amy as series 5 is still my favourite so far, and series 6 is also up there. But her chemistry with both 11 and Rory was electrifying and just overall i love how fairy tale her story is. Plus she acts very tough but it always made me tear up when her vulnerabilities came out. A prime example is when her door in The God Complex revealed little Amy waiting in her garden for the Doctor. The fact that she was still so scared of being abandoned again. It's kind of hard to explain exactly what it is about Amy that i love so much but there's just something about her that i really connected with, and the show still hadn't been able to replace her in my eyes.
Jack and Wilf also get billed in the opening credits when they're around. So do Adam and Mickey and Nardole. And, for what it's worth, so does the Master in The End of Time, so...
I loved Rose for the two seasons that she was the main companion but I think her return in “Journey’s End” dampened her send off in series 2. I think it would have been the better if the “dimensional canon” that she used to cross realities was like a one shot and she got so so close to the right reality but was off by a hair breath ending up in a reality identical to her old one except that on one summer’s day a woman in London turned left instead of right. I think it would have been more tragic if Rose’s return appearance had been limited to her actions in “Turn Left” as it really would have hammered home how trapped she was in Pete’s world and how much her sacrifice in “Doomsday” really meant. Plus other than being there she didn’t really add much to the actual season finale. She didn’t have the information on why the stars were going out that “Turn Left” implies she did so in the end while her first reappearance was splendid her second was just for the sake of nostalgia.
I personally would rate mickey a lot higher, personally I think he's better than Rory because Rory came off as whiny and immature everything Mickey did and said was because he was looking out for Rose and trying to protect her. Sure we know that the Doctor is cool and amazing but Mickey doesn't have that context, to him he's just a strange man who took away the girl he loved. Then there's that moment where Mickey finally accepts that its the choice that Rose makes in parting of the ways when Rose says that there is nothing left for her here... and he lets her go. His performance is understated but I can feel the pain when he finally realises that he can't be the person that Rose loves and he carries that weight and helps her anyway because despite everything he truly loves her and just wants her to be happy. The Doctor eventually realises this, that Mickey isn't just a clingy boyfriend, he cares about Rose just as much as he does and starts giving Mickey the respect he deserves.
Yeah, nothing against Mickey, but where Mickey takes a level in Badass, Rory re-specs into badass! Plus, like the Council said, the chemistry between Amy, Rory, and 11 was just amazing.
TheOnlyRoggol I find Mickey real whiny and imnature even when he is a soldier with beard, Rory was the humble stoic adult (Darrin Stevens) of the childness and anger Amy. Mickey became a stereotipe of solid snake while Rory become a better man.
Rory never got to that stage of badass to me, he never earned it imo. Mickey is constantly mocked by the doctor and his development over series 1 alone makes him one of my favourite characters. Mickey was only "solid snake" in the end of time for like 15 second cameo. Before that in doomsday and army of ghosts you saw his development from someone who sat back and watched to someone who was ready to jump into the front lines and face the threats head on.
I don't want to use the term Mary Sue because the Star Wars fans have just made the term totally sexist BUT Clara was overpowered for a human companion.
Oh, if you don't know what's going on with Star Wars fans you are a lucky man! It is beyond ugly over there. Some of the worst people alive have taken it over. Its ugly as hell over there!
I agree with your top two. Wilf could have been a full-time companion in his own right. He and the Doctor had such great respect for each other. As for Donna, all of what you said. She was a perfect counterpoint, never forgot he was an alien, called him out on his nonsense, yet actively supported him once all the information was in and she knew it was the right course to follow. She was the one to stop him... except when she needed him most. She did promise forever, but fully realized (unlike some others) that he had other companions before her, and her forever wasn't going to be the same as his. He would have companions afterwards... and she was fine about it. Truly his best friend and the healthiest relationship that I've seen in the new era. She'd been around the block, and her motives for going with him were to learn and help wherever she could. It was what she could do for the universe rather than what the universe (and the Doctor) could do for her. Her exit was among the saddest things I've ever seen.
Couldn't agree more about Donna and Wilf. Her exit and Wilf' orbital talk with the Doctor make me weep - STILL & every time! You're bang on, keep up the good work. Peace and good fortune to you and yours.
which is exactly why she stumbled in the end. Its like half of the writers wanted a tragic character who aspired to something she could never reach, and the other half were like: "nah, man. We can totally, I mean, she can totally reach that." Such a waste of a diner TARDIS.
Now that is companion I would like to see return Romana the time lady maybe she could take on tge appearance of Donna as she can be the new doctors new Best Girl Friend
I agree with you on this list for the most part. There are just a two that are different on my list: 1. Martha and Amy are actually switched for me. I just think that Martha is a little bit better than Amy because there were so many times where Martha was left on her own and she handled each situation like a pro every single time. Plus, she's the only companion in New Who who left the Tardis without something bad happening to her. (Seriously, I hate that New Who thinks that whenever a companion leaves the Doctor, they have to either die, get their memory wiped, or get sucked into a parallel dimension. I really hope they break that trend in Season 11.) 2. I honestly put Missy at #1 because she is the only villain in New Who (at least to my knowledge) who actually became a genuine companion to the Doctor. Plus she's the Master. Who would've thought that the Doctor's greatest enemy would ever turn good? Missy had so much character development over the three seasons she was involved in and I totally agree with you when you said that a season with just Capaldi and Missy in the Tardis would have been amazing. And that's another thing: Peter Capaldi and Michelle Gomez worked off of each other so well. In fact, their chemistry was better than most of the companions in New Who, in my opinion.
My favorite companion is always changing. For a while it was Martha, then Donna, then Rose, then Rory. I've never liked Amy, mostly because of the way she treated Rory. She was always putting the doctor before Rory, and Rory deserved better. Though Amy did kinda redeem herself when she let the angel take her to be with Rory. I'm happily surprised to see how high Martha ranks on your list. I love her and I think she's super underrated.
My favorite companion always changes when I see a bit of their episodes 😆 I watch Rose for a while and she’s my favorite, I watch Donna for a while then she’s my favorite. It’s always switching lol.
I really think Rose was way more guilty of that, to the point where Micky decided to strand himself on a parallel earth than return to being the third wheel in a team of him, his girlfriend, and the madman from space. There was also that time where Rose actually went missing for a year and EVERYONE thought he'd done away with her. We're talking hate mail and harrassment from all the speculation Jackie was spreading. Rose never seems to seem very guilty about that after that episode. TBH I like Rose, but in the mistreatment of boyfriends competition, she kinda wins
I wouldn't say he's trans, because he did never not define as a man while he was one biologically. This new incarnation is female, but her body is too - so I would say Nr. 13 isn't trans (unless we learn that she does properly define as male, and I don't expect that to happen), she - as an isolated incarnation - is just (cis-) female, and the Doctor's overall gender identity is more fluid, as it would probably be with most Timelords, considering their ever changing nature.
I just assumed Cassandra got the English language wrong and messed up the pronouns. Kinda like how she calls the jukebox and iPod and stuff. But you might be right
What you said about Donna are all the reasons that she is also my favorite as well. So many times I heard that she was their least favorite but to hear you put her on top makes me smile.
I LOVE that you put Wilf right up at number two! He is such a wonderful character and for me provided some of the most beautiful and the most heartbreaking interactions with the doctor. When they were in the cafe together and he was begging the doctor to 'bring Donna back' and how the doctor was 'better with her'. Also how the doctor told him that he would 'be proud' if he was his dad etc. I love him so much! Thank you for sharing this.
My top 5: 1. Donna 2. Wilf 3. Captain Jack 4. River Song 5. Rory Honourable mentions go to the Paternoster Gang - while maybe not official companions, they brighten my day every time I see them, especially Jenny. Also, you just have to mention the names Donna and Wilf to me for me to start crying
Donna is and will always be my favorite companion. Her relationship with the Doctor is so powerful and wonderful and amazing, and it's the kind of relationship that would've lasted forever. I cry the hardest whenever I watch the episode where she leaves, because the show leaves so much 'if only' with her character. I love her to pieces.
Yes i LOVE Donna! She is by far my favourite companion. She is equally comedic and emotional and perfectly complements Tennant's doctor. Plus her series has most of my favourite stories in it; Midnight, Silence in the Library, Unicorn and the Wasp, the Doctor's Daughter. Would have loved a 2nd Donna series.
CoG's ranking : 21. "we took adric and made him worse and two of them." 20. intentionally bad companion 19. trashy mom 18. Courtney 17. MIB guy 16. Brian Williams 15. Returns to get Clara killled 14. Nostalgia hook 13. yeah that guy 12. actual dammit moffat moment 11. toxic fandom ahoy 10. Comedy Relief 9. beter boyfriend 8. mystery box 7. Rose's replacement 6. SWASHBUCKLER 5. Amy?! 4. Exposition 3. companion?! 2. granddad 1. obvious
Rose Amy River Jack Almost all new era companions suffer as companions because they're too integral to the plot; Bad Wolf-DoctorDonna- the impossible girl. all too important to the storyline, all beyond the definition of companion, (writers fault). So I went with who I'd most enjoy spending more time with. I like Wilfred, but would hate to see him running from monsters every week, worrying about his health would be distracting.
Jypzii Freeborne it’s fine with rose as that was the first time they did that and it was only for the parting of ways.. but when they kept doing that for all companions it was annoying.
Yeah, I preferred it without all the domestic stuff, just the companion in the TARDIS on adventures. I hated the Doctor returning the companion home every day, really ruined the magic for me
I agree with this list. Your point about Bill is spot on, when she was announced, I thought ‘here we go...’ but when I watched her I realised I was wrong. Also, i thought that the trio of The Doctor, Bill and Nardal was great and I would’ve loved to have seen more. I totally agree with your top 2 and for the reasons given. I usually don’t like American dr Who reviews as much but i’ve Liked what i’ve saw of yours. As for companions in new Who, i’ve been keen to see them go towards the end of their run. apart from the ones mentioned above. The’ve annoyed me me to the point i’ve thought ‘yeah, bye already!’
See, each companion was different. They are all meant to be different. Rose was the one who saw that the doctor was angry and ashamed and made him better. She wanted to be with the doctor. Martha was the doctor. She was just as good, if not better, than him. She was the companion that saw what and who the doctor was, a man in a box who lives a dangerous life and someone who won’t see her the same way she saw him. Donna was the friend that he needed. The person who would stand up to him and say “that’s enough.” She was the one who brought him back to the mark. “Save someone. Not the whole town, just save someone.” She wanted to travel with him forever but the universe said no. The doctor had to let her go. Amy was a great contradiction to the doctor. She was in awe of him as a child, but as an adult she is angry at him for leaving her. She grew up and matured and made the doctor grow up too. She showed him that when he travels alone he becomes worse. Clara was meant to be the new Rose. She was meant to show him that he can be better. She was meant to be playful but bring him back down when he oversteps. Bill kept him in check. Bill was...amazing. I loved their dynamic. She summed it up best with these lines. “The first time you travel with the doctor, it’s wonderful. The second time is amazing. The third time, it’s dangerous.” Mickey was a great character development. He went from scared and scrawny, to helpful hacker, to defender of Earth from Daleks and Cybermen, to working for Torchwood. What a character development.
I am SO GLAD you put Wilfred so high up, he's a character that I didn't appreciate enough my first time through, that I really grew to love. His conversation with the 10th Doctor in "The End of Time" is really just phenomenal.
I was tempted to feel the same way, but in the context Council gave, with ONLY her appearances in New-Who's main show itself to go by, I get it. Clara is more 'important', even though she's not even in my Top 10 of New-Who companions (and Sarah *is*).
Clara was literally made as a dedication to Elizabeth Sladen but we didn’t really see much of Sarah so based on Council’s logic I would agree. I know everyone hates Clara but I really loved her relationship with Capaldi’s Doctor soooo muchh
@@pinkperfectpeach7544 I think Clara definitely gets a lot of undeserved hate, she has her good moments throughout the series. I don't think she's an amazing companion or anything though.
Oh my god thank you for being so polite! I have seen so many videos ranking companions and Doctors that have been so rude but even though I would have rated some of them differently you made very good points in a polite way.
I particularly like the fact the a large percentage of fans thought Catherine Tate was not going to be able to pull of a serious portrayal for the character. Only to shut the f#@& up after a few eps. And I love the best friend aspect. A shining example of a totally plutonic relationship between a male and female character in recent memory.
You made me cry on a ranking video. Because I loved your pick of number three, no one I've met really understands how MUCH I wanted that season, like you, of the Doctor and Missy traveling together. And how upset I was when she died. And the Doctor will never know even that she died, let alone the circumstances. Anyway. I agreed with most of the rest of it too, Martha was a great companion treated badly by her Doctor, on rewatches it actually makes me think less of Ten to see how casually he dismisses her. But even Doctors can't be perfect. Donna is my favorite companion too. And I would have put Wilf very high also. I wish he could have a cameo or something every once in a while. I'd love to see him again in the show, just to know how he's doing.
1) Amy Pond 2) River Song 3) Donna Noble 4) Bill Potts 5) Rory Williams 6) Jack Harkness 7) Nardole 8) Martha Jones 9) Clara Oswald 10) Rose Tyler 11) Mickey Smith
I found your channel within the last two weeks, I thoroughly love it. I too am a Donna Noble fan, everyone in my house including my husband doesn't like her. I think she is the best companion because she, like a true friend, tells him like it is whether he wants to hear it or not. As you said they are best friends and that is what made her departure so much worse and extremely emotional.
Using your criteria. 1. Captain Jack Harkness 2. Wilfred 3. Sarah Jane 4. River 5. Clara 6. Amy 7. Donna 8. Nardole 9. Rose 10. Bill 11. Rory 12. Martha 13: Mickey 14. Brian 15. Jackie 16. Vastra 17. Rigsy 18. Courtney 19. Adam 20. Angie and Archie Not included Canton because he's only part of the one story, not even sure if he has a background appearance in Wedding of River Song.
Gryotharian Scom Gibbler The Snowmen, if memory serves we see her and The Doctor enter the TARDIS and travel to Doctor Simeons office in the it. Think Vastra and Eleven even have a bit of dialogue in the TARDIS together.
Deathlygunn Main companions (some characters change over time and I like their personality better in different series 1: Rory (After his resurrection) 2: Clara (season 7) 3: Donna 4: Martha 5: Amy 6: Clara (series 8) 7: Rory (Until his second death in the Silurian episode) 8: Rose (series 1) 9: Clara (series 9) 10: Rose (series 2) 11: Bill
hey!!! I saw you in a commercial for a doctor who thingy! I forgot exactly what it was, but it surprised me quite a bit when I saw you, Im really happy about it though!!
It’s Sunday again! Finally! My rankings would go: 1). Rose 2). Donna 3). Bill 4). Amy 5). Martha 6). Clara I recently watched all the modern era again and I have grown to really admire Martha and I kinda like Clara (still bottom for me though).
I did have trouble working out whether to put Donna or Rose at number 1, as I love Rose in series 1, but then she isn't as good in her future appearances. But the first series is so special to me, that's why I gave her number 1 spot. :)
There's a LOT of companions to cover so I'll just do a top 10 1. Rose 2. Martha 3. Wilf 4. Captain Jack Harkness 5. Donna 6. Bill 7. Mickey 8. Sarah Jane Smith 9. Adam 10. Nardole
I would love to see a video of you ranking all of the one-off/non-traveling companions sometime! Some of the one-offs are incredible, like Sally Sparrow from Blink, Stormageddon and Craig, Astrid...
My personal top 10 list 1. Bill Potts 2. Rory Williams 3. Wilfred Mott 4. Amy pond 5. Clara Oswald 6. Martha jones 7. Micky Smith 8. Graham o brian 9. Donna noble 10. Nardole
I agree with your list almost completely, accept for clara. I liked here in the mummy in the orient express, face the raven and heaven sent. I liked Victorian clara, if they had kept here and scraped the impossible girl thing. Also when doing mine I held the same standards for a companion, however I loved Perkins and thought he should of stayed.
I wish we had more time with Donna. She´s my favourite companion (and one of my favourite characters of DW) and her exit was heartbreaking. Going from being the doctors best friend, to not knowing him at all. I´m not gonna lie, I cried at that scene. "Donna - I was just leaving", "Yeah. See yah" was such a heartwrenching moment. I would love for her to be revisited, but I don´t know if that would work without Tennant. Catherine and David has such a dynamic chemistry, there´s no doubt they actually really enjoy each others company. Now Jodie's doctor (from what I´ve seen so far) is kinda like Tennant's doctor in a way, that they´re both filled with energy and adventure. But Tennant had a melancholy, that complimented the eratic nature of him perfectly. I don´t know, if we´ll see that with Jodie as well... Another companion, that I actually like is River. Alex Kingston is one of my favourite actresses (and I kinda look like her), so naturally, I was intrigued to find her character popping up every once in a while. Even though, her exit in Husbands of River Song was perfect and I loved how it tied together with her first appearance in Silence in the Library, I´d love to see her with Jodie Whittacker. Just for the sake of the comedy that would ensue. I don´t know, how they would format that (seeing as River is supposedly very much dead and we´ve seen most of their interactions on screen) - I do believe River mentions some events from her diary, that we don´t see - maybe they could use that? She mentions a whole slew of things, they´ve done together, in Silence in the Library, like a picnic in Asgard, which I´m pretty sure we don´t see.
I mostly agree with this list, but especially number one. Donna grated on me the first time I saw her in The Runaway Bride and it took me a second re-watch of the whole new Who until I properly fell in love with her. She is everything I want in a companion and while 10 isn't my favourite Doctor, the two of them have my favourite dynamic out of all the Doctor/Companion relationships.
FINALLY, a clear and concise reflection of how I felt about Donna - she had fantastic chemistry with the Doctor without having to be a love interest or family member; a pure friendship born out of a mutual respect and love for one another made Donna fit so well in the show and made her my fave companion
donna is and will always be my facourte purely beacsue she never needed outside factors to be brilliant she did it on her own .Her ability to be bith hilarious and heart breaking is incredible and i do belive she will never be topped
Cid "I just want a mate!" "You just want to mate?!"
You're not mating with me sunshine!
Reynik Namyrion Ah that perfect 'Donna' charm. I knew I was misremebered it
Amy is also the doctor’s best friend in the same way too
Not at first, though. That's her problem. The fact that she sexually assaults him in episode 5. Even Moffat thought that was a mistake in hindsight.
Later on, when she finally gets herself sorted out (with Rory, that is), she gets better, but the show gets worse :(.
I kind of like knowing that Tennant and Tate are besties in real life. It did show on screen.
It definitely shows. That’s probably why Donna is my favorite character, they just seem like actual friends, and that’s because the actors are.
Chris Abbey
Him and Billie Piper got on well too.
IKR it’s so funny when they see each other in the window and Donna is like “hey bestie!!”
I don't find Catherine tate that funny but she is the funniest companion
Casting against type has worked well in Doctor Who. Jon Pertwee was an established comic actor/comedian, but he played his Doctor straight and was superb in the role. Sylvester McCoy, an instinctively comic performer, only came into his own after he quit clowning around and turned all dark and mysterious on us.
Love this interaction:
Jack sees Rose and Mickey hug.
Jack: "Aw, how come I get none of that?"
Doctor: "Buy me a drink first."
Jack: "Such hard work!"
Doctor: "But worth it."
FINALLY a list like this where people actually include people like Mickey, Rory and Nardole, its pretty annoying to see major characters be left off because they aren't female/the main companion
Regular Teller Honestly Mickey and Rory are probably in my top five companions
Yeah, the “sole female companion” trend has gotten tired and I’m glad Chibs is abandoning it for a Tardis team.
Audrey the cat nerd Especially after rewatching series 1, Mickey is definitely one of the best companions overall. Rory too.
I know rory is a companion but hes like a half companion like he only travels with the doctor sometimes not all the time that's probably why some people didnt include them
I friggin love Mickey I'm reading one of the novels from 2005 rn and him having a big part in it is amazing. Tin dog WHO?? 💅🏻💅🏻
@@teddabear8890 he also forgot the tenth doctors master
What I liked about Rose for The Doctor was her fun with him. The teasing.
"What sort of date are you?" She razzed him. "Alright you right wad, I'll buy."
The 9th Doctor was such a war damaged individual. Rose inspired The Doctor to find his heart again.
She reminded him of the man he was before the painful Time War shredded him so badly. Rose reminded The Doctor that he
Enjoyed his life.
"Hearts"
They had such amazing chemistry together, Rose and 9. Im reading one of the novels with them in it and every time they're together it's just a blast.
Yeah Martha Jones was really underused..
Big time. That's what made her exit poignant, I think.
and she was damned sexy!
Kevin Thomas You really know how to lower the tone huh
You guys are so serious!
Hell, Martha was the only modern companion who didn't have a tragic ending!
I never need to see River again, buuuuut: Wives of River Song is such a tempting title.
Oh dang... yeah that has a nice ring.
Remember when Clara said that she doesn't know that River is a woman?
How dare you, River is one of the best ❤️ (don't take it the wrong way)
I feel like Martha is the only modern full-time companion I wouldn’t mind coming back.
Purely because she’s not a huge fan favorite, and she was so underutilized. If the show brought back Martha, my immediate thought wouldn’t be “Oh boy, we’re getting this desperate, huh” but “Oh hey, someone must have a good idea.”
She’s up there with Cpt.
Rose is stuck in a different universe, pre-metacrisis Donna is dead, Amy and Rory are stuck in New York in the past, Clara is probably too busy flying a diner through space with Ashildr and Bill is a space oil alien now
UltimateKyuubiFox I agree dude
RTD was so great at being attentive to details like that, can't wait to see what kinda new stuff he does when he returns. His era is my favorite
I'd love love to see Captain Jack back, idk I obviously haven't seen her yet but I have a feeling he'd play really well off of Jodie whereas I do feel like he'd have felt out of place with Smith and Capaldi.
I don’t agree that he’d have felt out of place with Smith. Capaldi yes I think so however, I 100% agree that if he returns with Whittaker he would fit right in
I also hold to the fact that this is more possible than with Moffat, as Chibnall was head writer for the first two seasons of Torchwood.
I really hope he makes an appearance in Wittacker's run even if he doesnt stay on for more than an episode.
that would be amazing
Yeah if Jack tries to flirt with the Doctor, She will put him in his place. Jack is amazing, bring him back
This isn't the most popular opinion going around, but my favourite (for 'main' companions who are around for a whole series at least) is definitely Martha, because she's not prophecised or a huge part of the mythos or the show she hasn't had her whole life from childhood defined by the Doctor. She's an ordinary human who's every bit as able to save the world as The Bad Wolf or The Impossible Girl, and I think that's a big part of what the show's about. Bill is close, for the same reasons and honestly it might be a tie when series 10 comes on UK Netflix and I get to rewatch it
Doctor who isn't on U.S. Netflix :(
I 100% agree with Martha being great!! She’s been my favourite for years
Dylan Ring Productions oh you poor darling. I'm so sorry, we just got Dr. Mysterio
Tom Chaney oh lucky well I go to the library to get my doctor who fix :) they have the dvds there
Dylan Ring Productions Good library. I approve
Why Martha Jones is probably the best companion from New Who:
Donna, Rose and Amy didn't want to leave "Spaceboy", "My Doctor" or "Raggedy Man", but they didn't have a choice.
Yeah Martha saved the world while being in the Master's dystopia for a year, she's one of the best for that
Also, that one time Martha cast Expelliarmus was pretty great, wasn't it
Dr Martha Jones is my Favorite
i used to be kind of "meh" with Martha but not anymore. you bring up amazing points and now i couldnt agree more! shes up there with Donna for me
This is longer than any essay I have written for school
Donna will forever be my favorite, I just love the sass and her ending was so sad
She had me the moment she and the Doctor met up again and had that pantomime exchange.
The problem with Clara is that she's kinda like a fan fiction character. She's just over powered and overly capable and her death/resurection was the stuff of pure fan fiction.
She was great in series 8.
Once they moved past the whole Impossible Girl crap she became more...tolerable.
She's an acquired taste ;)
She's cuter than Smurfette but Moffat just kinda tried to hard to make her cool and mysterious.
Companions don't have to be cool, powerful amd mysterious THAT'S THE DOCTOR'S JOB!
If she did die in the doctor timestream, that would be a heartbreaking ending for a companion. Really good, and sad heartbreaking ending.
I swear if we get one more companion crushing on The Doctor or The Doctor stupidly breaking rules for them I will be frustrated.
#NoMoreClara
God I hate the crush on the doctor trope
The crush I hate. However breaking the rules depends on the character and their relationship. Because if he broke the rules for Donna I'd completely understand
I hope one of the new companions crushes on Jodie’s Doctor, then she shows them her first few incarnations and they’re like “um, nevermind.”
KernowShinigamiViper Lil'Dragon Agreed. I never want to see a companion crush on the Doctor ever again.
My rankings wouldn't be quite the same, but I enjoyed your explanations, which make sense and are worth listening to.
Nicole V nahhh wild.
But she's also not some sort of bland badly written teen fiction 'live through the main character' girl and she's super fleshed out and also just super kind (yeah I know that goes back to the first thing I said I wouldn't talk about but... she ALWAYS tried to relate to or care about the people she ran into in a way that contrasts with the doctor at times and its just so nice to watch)
Also I really liked how she had all the back on earth drama/storyline, which I know some people don't like as much.
Wilf is my Number One
Rhodri Williams Completely agree
Yes, Bernard Cribbins is a legend. Not sure but think he was in classic Who too in an episode or 2.
Wilf and Mickey are both suuuuuper underrated
Mhairi Gibbons He was in the Cushing movies
@@mgthestrange9098 no he wasn't but he was offered the role of the 4th Doctor and played Tom Campbell in the 2nd Peter Cushing movie
Speaking as someone who hasn't seen any of the post-Clara companions yet (though I plan to!)...
5. River Song
4. Amy Pond & Rory -Williams- Pond
3. Jack Harkness
2. Martha Jones
1. DONNA NOBLE.
Sarah Jane is, of course, in a class by herself as far as companions go. In an all-time list she'd definitely make the top.
Curt Clark You only have one companion left, then. And I hope you like her. I really do.
put River where Martha is and Martha where River is and i agree
Donna deserves the love!
HARVEY WALLBANGER?
Put rose where Donna is and done
Donna's story is the most tragic story they've ever done and is far more tragic an end than any death could ever be. That last episode still makes me cry.
I love Donna.
I was waiting for Donna's name all through this video. I actually squealed when you put her in first place. She was SO GOOD.
What imo they should've done with Clara:
Get rid of modern day version and impossible
Keep the smart and flirty Victorian version as a character, have her decide to leave the doctor, and then we see see her as a Dalek.
YESSSS SOMEONE WHO THINKS MISSY IS A COMPANION!!!!!!
That annoys me, cause it's essentially giving The Master a downgrade from The Doctor's nemesis
Zak Rosenfeld yes I see your point but I sorta like it because it's a different incarnation so it can just be a phase
I liked that too :) A definite bit of the old Xavier/Magneto thing going on there too, where yes, they are enemies, but they're also old friends who have been through a lot together & Michelle Gomez's performance plus the chemistry between the two is fantastic
I really wanted to see Missy's reaction to The Doctor being female tbh
I can get that a lot of fans don't like the relationship she had with the Doctor because she loved him in a romantic way..but that made me connect with her even more because I sympathize with her and to be completely honest the reason for that is:
If I would get the opportunity to travel with such a remarkable man, (an alien so smart and so strong, so full of power which he only uses in good intentions like having fun and saving the planets, saving so many lives, saving your own life a thousand times), I think I simply could not NOT FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM.
YES YES YES YES YESSSS ^^^^^
Jackie could be really sweet, sometimes, as well. Not like Donna's mum. (ugh)
My 10 favorite 'Modern Era' companions in reverse order are...
10) Clara Oswald
9) River Song
8) Amy Pond
7) Rory Williams
6) Sarah Jane Smith
5) Martha Jones
4) Nardole
3) Wilfred Mott
2) Donna Noble
1) Bill Potts
Y I K E S
Tots agree! I loved Clara.
100%. She references it when someone assumes she's straight, as most people tend to do (i.e., heteronoramtivity).
Commendable list. All your points are extremely valid. Wear your Whovian Scarf with pride good sir.
I really wish they had done more with Maisie Williams' character.
Yeah, that felt like an interesting concept in need of better stories.
Yeah, me too
Council of Geeks I liked the stories they told with her (except the end of Hell Bent), I just wish there was more
We all truly know that will was the best companion.
"ITS THEM ALIEN".
not a true companion
20:11
Batman: why did you said that
name!
In terms of the MAIN companions (the billed ones in the opening credits), my list would go from worst to best:
- Rose: Liked her when the show came back and i was 8.
TARDIStraveller96 Obviously it's your opinion but I'm literally the opposite I hate seasons 5-7 so much
David Cremin On rewatching them, I loved season 5. 6 and 7 were the worst two, though.
TheOnlyRoggol having watched Demons Run I must disagree with you. Rory may not have been all machismo but he was a hardcore badass.
I mean it more in the sense of being emotionally mature.
I would add that Donna Noble is Tennant's moral compass. "Doctor, you can stop now." Nuff said.
Donna Noble, eternal queen. I sobbed so much when the doctor said goodbye and she didn't remember him, nor herself. She had grown so much. :'(
Modern era companions... I've watched enough to not have any doubt that Donna was #1... I love Amy...
I don't want to use the term Mary Sue because the Star Wars fans have just made the term totally sexist BUT Clara was overpowered for a human companion.
How is it a sexist term? I'm still confused by that. There is a male version, and I do feel it's appropriately applied a lot of the time.
I said the Star Wars fans have TURNED it into a sexist term.
Orginally it wasn't.
Kevin Thomas How did they turn it into a sexist term? I'm not part of the SW fandom so I don't know
Oh, if you don't know what's going on with Star Wars fans you are a lucky man! It is beyond ugly over there. Some of the worst people alive have taken it over. Its ugly as hell over there!
Every time I see one of your videos, your nails are always so on point. Love the nail polish. SO SPARKLY!!!!!!!!😍😍😍😍😍
Wait he wears nail polish
I genuinely love Martha, so I'm really happy that you moved her up.
Couldn't agree more about Donna and Wilf. Her exit and Wilf' orbital talk with the Doctor make me weep - STILL & every time! You're bang on, keep up the good work. Peace and good fortune to you and yours.
did anyone else want more episodes where it was just 11 and Rory going on an adventure? I like their dynamic.
That description of Donna...damn, right in the feels. She really was phenomenal.
They tried to make Clara a peer to the Doctor the way Missy or Romana were and it didn't really work.
The basically tried to make her the main character and the show all about her
Yeah, I hate to be a "hater" but they made it hard to like Clara sometimes.
which is exactly why she stumbled in the end. Its like half of the writers wanted a tragic character who aspired to something she could never reach, and the other half were like: "nah, man. We can totally, I mean, she can totally reach that."
Such a waste of a diner TARDIS.
Now that is companion I would like to see return Romana the time lady maybe she could take on tge appearance of Donna as she can be the new doctors new Best Girl Friend
@@provisionalhypothesis it just means if I ever run a Doctor Who rpg, the PCs will have to assume something aweful happened to them.
I agree with you on this list for the most part. There are just a two that are different on my list:
1. I really hope they break that trend in Season 11.)
TBH I like Rose, but in the mistreatment of boyfriends competition, she kinda wins
your description of donna was so perfect and well said and i appreciate everything you said about her
So I was re-watching series 9 and Cassandra said she grew up on earth as a little boy... does that make her the first trans character on doctor who?
Does the Eldrad count?
Technically the Doctor falls into that category too now.
rocketcon That's intresting. Does it count? How does the doctors gender identity work?
I totally agree on Jack. I like Torchwood, but he's so dull in it.
My top 5:
1. Donna
2. Wilf
3. Captain Jack
4. River Song
5. Rory
Honourable mentions go to the Paternoster Gang - while maybe not official companions, they brighten my day every time I see them, especially Jenny. Also, you just have to mention the names Donna and Wilf to me for me to start crying
YES! Donna. Glad to hear you say that so now I know you are worth following.
Finally I've been waiting a while for this
Fintan Dunne oh hey! Finally a first comment that didn't say "first"
Donna is and will always be my favorite companion.

I hated the Doctor returning the companion home every day, really ruined the magic for me
@@shatterandfry4364 go watch classic era, for 26 years and 7 doctors thats EXACTLY what they did!
The third time, it’s dangerous.”
Mickey was a great character development. He went from scared and scrawny, to helpful hacker, to defender of Earth from Daleks and Cybermen, to working for Torchwood. What a character development.
Cupcake Kitten loved how you explained this
I am SO GLAD you put Wilfred so high up, he's a character that I didn't appreciate enough my first time through, that I really grew to love. His conversation with the 10th Doctor in "The End of Time" is really just phenomenal.
Ooooh... don’t you dare put Sarah Jane below Clara 😂
what moments did she have in this show to justify otherwise?
I was tempted to feel the same way, but in the context Council gave, with ONLY her appearances in New-Who's main show itself to go by, I get it. Clara is more 'important', even though she's not even in my Top 10 of New-Who companions (and Sarah *is*).
It has to be said that in School Reunion, Sarah Jane was just kind of bitchy
I've never met anyone who can't stand River.
Joshua V. Harding I can't stand river
Joshua V. Harding Go to any Doctor Who convention and that will change.
she's one of least favorite Doctor Who characters
River started out great, but she kept on getting worse the more she appeared.
Just like the Weeping Angels
"14: Sarah Jane Smith"
So you like to live dangerously.
1) Amy Pond
2) River Song
3) Donna Noble
4) Bill Potts
5) Rory Williams
6) Jack Harkness
7) Nardole
8) Martha Jones
9) Clara Oswald
10) Rose Tyler
11) Mickey Smith
This is almost my list.
I love your top three and hearing your wonderfully expressed feelings about them was quite moving.
Surely canton wouldn't work in this list because he only appeared in one story?
That's a good point, I didn't think of that but you're right.
He also appears in The Wedding of River Song.
Council of Geeks I'll have to rewatch that one. I don't remember him there.
Council of Geeks hmm I guess but it's just scenes from the 2 parter
Council of Geeks he appears in one shot taken from Impossible Astronaut. If Canton counts, then Vincent and Dorium would too
I found your channel within the last two weeks, I thoroughly love it.
1. Captain Jack Harkness
2. Wilfred
3. Sarah Jane
4. River
5. Clara
6. Amy
7. Donna
8. Nardole
9. Rose
10. Bill
11. Rory
12. Martha
13: Mickey
14. Brian
15. Jackie
16. Vastra
17. Rigsy

Not included Canton because he's only part of the one story, not even sure if he has a background appearance in Wedding of River Song.
Deathlygunn he is in Wedding of River Song for a bit.
When was vastra in the tardis?
Gryotharian Scom Gibbler The Snowmen, if memory serves we see her and The Doctor enter the TARDIS and travel to Doctor Simeons office in the it. Think Vastra and Eleven even have a bit of dialogue in the TARDIS together.

It’s Sunday again! Finally! My rankings would go:
1). Rose
2). Donna
3). Bill
4). Amy
5). Martha
6). Clara
I recently watched all the modern era again and I have grown to really admire Martha and I kinda like Clara (still bottom for me though).
I did have trouble working out whether to put Donna or Rose at number 1, as I love Rose in series 1, but then she isn't as good in her future appearances. But the first series is so special to me, that's why I gave her number 1 spot. :)
Rose in series one is amazing .. but series 2 brings her down a bit
yes I agree
Some days when I'm sad I like to imagine there's still one lonely dalek out there still spinning forever and ever for Donna.
There's a LOT of companions to cover so I'll just do a top 10
1. Rose
2. Martha
3. Wilf
4. Captain Jack Harkness
5. Donna
6. Bill
7. Mickey
8. Sarah Jane Smith
9. Adam

Best list I've seen yet.
for MODERN ERA I wont argue with this list, good choices!
I would love to see a video of you ranking all of the one-off/non-traveling companions sometime! Some of the one-offs are incredible, like Sally Sparrow from Blink, Stormageddon and Craig, Astrid...

Donna is my all time fav companion. I love her so much.
Good video, but for me it's:
1: Donna
2:Amy Pond
3: Rose
4: Rory Williams
5: Willford
6: Martha
7: Sarah Jane
8: Captain Jack
9: Micky
10: Bill
My list:
