100% agree about "Richard Mace." I thought he'd make a great 17th century companion when "The Visitation" was first shown. However, I've heard that actor Michael Robbins thought very little of DW and certainly wouldn't have wanted to continue. Second thought: I hadn't considered "D84" as a companion; it's a pity he (it?) was killed off. Now that you mention it, D84 has interesting possibilities.
Good call on Duggan, Richard Mace and D84. Beatrix Lehmann as Emilia Rumford had such good chemistry with Tom in The Stones of Blood, it would've been nice to have an old but still lively companion. Or to go a bit younger, maybe Miss Hawthorne from The Dæmons.
@@paulforder591 well Duh, that’s How I know who Kemel is. Yeah the spelling is crooked. His relationship with Jamie was brother in battle. The 2nd Doctor wouldn’t have to run and hide when he has Kemel as a companion.
I always thought Shona from Last Christmas would have been a good companion. (I also think that should have been Clara’s final episode but then we wouldn’t have gotten Heaven Sent and Hell Bent.)
_My_ Personal _Top Picks:_ *1)* Perkins *2)* Osgood *3)* O’Donnell (Under the Lake / Before the Flood) *4)* Chela *5)* Tim Latimer *6)* Rita (The God Complex) *7)* Kiani (She’s from a Big Finish story called _“The Eleven”,_ but she’s fr1cking AWESOME) *8)* Jade McIntyre (Arachnids in the UK - I quite liked her, especially the blatant lack of knowledge when it came to how creepy her study-subject was found by other people 😂) *9)* D84 *10)* Handles
I would have LOVED some episodes with Wilfred Mott traveling with the Doctor. They could have been the “sad old man squad” at times, despite their apparent age differences, but Wilf was also fun, lovable, brave and kind. Bernard Cribbins had also auditioned for the part of the Doctor, but was turned down for someone younger. Still, getting a consolation prize of playing basically a perfect character is good too.
I think we all agree getting some none modern day companions would be a nice change for Nu-who. I always thought madam dapompador (excuse my French) would’ve made a cool companion for a few episodes.
Chela is just a placement for Adric, who should never have been killed off. Plus it was just Tegan and Nyssa so Chela could have joined but Davison didn't want anyone more interesting than his. Also: Timmy from HUMAN NATURE, Jake from RISE OF THE CYBERMEN, and Tommy from IDIOT'S LANTERN (who was originally supposed to have a crush on and kiss the Doctor).
I can't recall if there ever was a case where the doctor took someone from the future or the past as his companion aside from Victorian Clara (River Song doesn't count, she is still technically given birth by modern humans). It would actually be a new and fun direction to approach if they decided to take some from 25th century or 15th century as a series long companion, but I guess the production group just prefers to be lazy and stick with 21st century companions over and over again. (not that it isn't ok, but people eventually get tired of eating chocolate icecream if they have it 24/7)
The companions provide the eyesight of the audience, so it makes most sense to be 21 century people, like we all are, you can't really be emphatic with an alien, can you? There are exceptions, but still the companions are mostly just us, the audience.
Sally Sparrow. Sally Sparrow. Sally Sparrow! The mere mention of her name makes my heart skip a beat. One look and I was instantly in love for ever! Absolutely right you made her number one. Cary Mulligan was offered a whole season but she had bigger fish to fry. I watched some of the Coen Brothers movies she went on to without being anywhere near as moved, but An Education was brilliant and so risque, and she was fantastic as Bathsheba in Far From The Madding Crowd.
I would have loved to see Nasreen from The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood. She was funny, brave, curious, and smart. And she developed a quick and easy rapport with Eleven, snapping his bracer strap playfully after the Tardis crashed through the earth. And the Doctor took an almost instant liking to her and obviously thought highly of her, even trusting her at the negotiating table beside Amy.
There's one that I think would be an amazing nod, both from a story telling standpoint and a respectful nod to a lost performer. The Sarah Jane Adventures is clearly fair game since characters would often cross over, so why not... Luke? Surely he's done with university by now and his interesting origin and current restriction to stay on Earth by the Judoon are seeds for stories.
In the titanic episode with 10th I'm surprised that one woman want a companion, before I watched the ending where she shoved off Max in the abyss with herself
This bothered me and has for a very long time Why do people hate the Lazarus Experiment so much? The story is pretty good, the characters are good, the premise works, the darkness of the doctor shines through I don't understand the hate for the episode
I'd like to have seen the Doctor's "daughter", Jenny, show up during Jodie's run. Just for a couple of episodes. There's no way that they couldn't help bumping into each other somewhere around the universe. I understand she did in other media but I'm talking TV.
Somebody I always thought would have been a perfect companion for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor was Frank Skinner as Perkins from Mummy on the Orient Express. I thought he he was the perfect foil for Calpaldi’s Doctor, and who wouldn’t want to watch a couple of crotchety old white guys having adventures together? Perkins was calm and laid back and the Doctor was a bit manic and hyper.
Jabe (1x02: The End Of The World) was my first favorite almost companion from NuWho. She was brave and witty. I could add Alice O´Donnell, from Under The Lake/Before The Flood...
Damn! When I saw the beginning I thought Jenny (The Doctor's daughter!) was going to be on the list! AND Madame de Pompadour! Both deserved a chance in the TARDIS!
“But Chibnall if your listening to this” Me: Of course he isnt. Why else does he not care about listening to the criticism of the show he has now burned to the ground
Very pleased to find D84 on the list - I've always mourned the fact he didn't make it as a TARDIS regular. So much potential... and as much as I love K-9, D84 would've been a lot more practical, as was mentioned. One potential candidate missing from the list in my opinion would be Todd from "Kinda" who had a great rapport with Davison's Doctor, but may have been a bit too similar to Liz Shaw...
I always thought Sally would be next after Martha and was shocked she wasn't. One correction to the list though D84...as a child I became obsessed with him for a spell and never, never found his face terrifying 🤣🤣
no Sara Kingdom? You've gotta be badass for Big Finish to weasel around a technicality to make an entire series of radio plays about you as a companion xD
Definitely would have preferred Adric's brother over Adric. And yea, Duggan in City of Death was a standout, as was D84 in Robots of Death. Would have been much better than Chameleon, poor thing. Sally Sparrow and her fella there were nothing more than predecessors to Amy Pond and Rory, practically the same. Richard Mace from The Visitation, I did like immensely. That episode had some wonderful 'olde England' feel to it as well. Nice to not be on a spaceship. It seemed like somebody from nearly the first five or six Davison stories could have entered the Tardis and become a companion. Castrovalva- Mergrave. While I wouldn't know why he would be a companion, it really seemed as tho he was going to join the Doctor and his team. Four to Doomsday - I honestly thought the four little nationalities characters might make it into the tardis. Kinda- Todd, the scientist lady. Visitation - Mace. Black Orchid - seemed like something weird could have gone down with Nyssa and her look-alike. The old lady in Stones of Blood was one we wouldn't have minded joining up as well. |
The fact that D-84 was destroyed when the Doctor activated the 'Robo destruct' device, plus the fact he had a Laserson probe stuck in his head, too, didn't help, either.
I agree with your statement that all of the companions since 2005 are women from the same time period as the audience who is watching the episodes. It would be interesting to have a companion who is from the Middle Ages or some other pre-industrial era, and watch as she / he has to come to terms with technology and concepts like time and space travel.
If they are still going don the road of a female doctor after Jodie's departure then get the off=spring of the real thing - get JENNY Back. The doctor's daughter and wife literally and figuratively.
My list includes : Jenny (Doctors Daughter) River Song (more permanently than just a recurring character) Jack Harkness (more than just recurring). What's his name from "The Lodger" episode (where the Doctor (Matt Smith) thinks he's a pretty cool soccer player! (Not!)). Sarah Jane (again). K-9 (again). Peter Davidson Doctor (again). Donna's grandad, Wilf If ever they meet, Sally Sparrow.
I can't believe that I'm the only one calling for Canton Delaware, the gay FBI agent who saved the doctor from the Silence in the episodes the Day of the Moon, and The Impossible Astronaut. Not only a great character but played by the fantastic Mark Sheppard. He would have been a terrific companion.
yes yes and more yes to sally sparrow, I looked her up on IMDB the other day and she doesn't still have a lot of work on her resume and I'm left shaking my head why, she's a brilliant actress.
Why is no one talking about the fact that he uses Reinette as the thumbnail but doesn’t include her?!?!

i actually couldnt decide which one-off character i would like to see most as a companion, until u blew my mind away with ur absolutely genius logic behind D-84! the sandminer robots r my favorite villains of all time and u managed to make me wish one of them travelled with the doctor as one of his close friends. and the sandminer robots r still my favorites
Also Kamel,(Evil of the Daleks) the silent strongman with the heart of gold.
That's Kemel, Mr. Zeng. I take it you've seen film clips from Evil of the Daleks? (Which is mostly missing, except for episode 2.) 😁😼🇬🇧🇬🇧
We did get Sally Sparrow and Larry. Except they were called Amy Pond and Rory.
Robots of death is such a good classic story nice touch
Including D84 earned a thumbs up. I just re-watched Robots of Death over Christmas.
Still hanging onto hope that Jenny is coming back someday, she literally married David Tennant irl
_My_ Personal _Top Picks:_
*1)* Perkins
*2)* Osgood
*3)* O’Donnell (Under the Lake / Before the Flood)
*4)* Chela
*5)* Tim Latimer
*6)* Rita (The God Complex)
*7)* Kiani (She’s from a Big Finish story called _“The Eleven”,_ but she’s fr1cking AWESOME)
*8)* Jade McIntyre (Arachnids in the UK - I quite liked her, especially the blatant lack of knowledge when it came to how creepy her study-subject was found by other people 😂)
*9)* D84
*10)* Handles
I would have LOVED some episodes with Wilfred Mott traveling with the Doctor. They could have been the “sad old man squad” at times, despite their apparent age differences, but Wilf was also fun, lovable, brave and kind. Bernard Cribbins had also auditioned for the part of the Doctor, but was turned down for someone younger. Still, getting a consolation prize of playing basically a perfect character is good too.
Pleasantly surprised the list wasn't all 21st century. Too many fans don't seem to know about the classic era
When I was watching the episode with Ada Lovelace, I was hoping she'd be one of the Doctor's companions.
Witness the power of Duggan at 6:17! He barely pushed on those loose stones and nearly brought the whole wall down!!
(not that it isn't ok, but people eventually get tired of eating chocolate icecream if they have it 24/7)
The only ones I can think of from the past would have been from the classic series - Jamie, Victoria, and Katarina
The companions provide the eyesight of the audience, so it makes most sense to be 21 century people, like we all are, you can't really be emphatic with an alien, can you? There are exceptions, but still the companions are mostly just us, the audience.
I believe Zoe was from the future and of course, Captain Jack. Technically, K-9 was also from the future.
Fell in love with Sophia Myles. Wonderful episode
Astrid from Voyage of the Damned would of made a great companion.
Excuse me, but Jack will forever be the smoothest companion. No debate.
So the woman in the thumbnail is nowhere to be seen in the video... Even if she was David Tennants partner at that time lol.
Lynda with a Y!!! I still cry about her. She and Nine would have been so good together
I would have loved most of these! Just to add a couple: Ray from Delta and the Bannermen and Shou Yuing from Battlefield.
you teased Madame du Pompadour and she's not on the list? what the heck? i'll take my like back
I would have loved to see Nasreen from The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood.
These are excellent picks. Especially in New Who, the companions have tended to fall into the same mold. These choices were really interesting.
Okay but Imagine Adelaide Brooke putting the doctor in his place every time he goes to do something ridiculous 😂
Surprised Bernard Cribbins wasn't on this list...
Especially as he was in one of the films with Peter Cushing as the Doctor
LOVED Richard Mace. He would have been a great returning character, periodically. It was a great time period and worked well with Doctor Who.
Wilfred Mott would have been an amazing companion, just saying
In the titanic episode with 10th I'm surprised that one woman want a companion, before I watched the ending where she shoved off Max in the abyss with herself
Yeah, her name was Astrid Peth and I too was waiting for her to appear in this video.
True. I daresay getting someone like Kylie Minogue to commit to a long running TV series wouldn't be easy though.
@@Sids1192 could have had her in for a few episodes before she kicked the bucket
Lady Christina De Souza, Astrid Peth, or Jabe would be my picks for should have been companions in the modern Doctor Who.
This bothered me and has for a very long time
Why do people hate the Lazarus Experiment so much? The story is pretty good, the characters are good, the premise works, the darkness of the doctor shines through
I don't understand the hate for the episode
I would have loved to have seen more of Professor Emilia Rumford from the Stones of Blood.
“But Chibnall if your listening to this”
Me: Of course he isnt. Why else does he not care about listening to the criticism of the show he has now burned to the ground
@dr103 Yeah there's no more ground to burn
Very pleased to find D84 on the list - I've always mourned the fact he didn't make it as a TARDIS regular. So much potential... and as much as I love K-9, D84 would've been a lot more practical, as was mentioned. One potential candidate missing from the list in my opinion would be Todd from "Kinda" who had a great rapport with Davison's Doctor, but may have been a bit too similar to Liz Shaw...
We can still get season with Billy Shipton 😁
i thought you knew D-84 and Astrid were companions to the War Doctor.. wow That's a heck of a tale
What a tease with who they featured in the image for this video wasn't featured....
I always thought Sally would be next after Martha and was shocked she wasn't. One correction to the list though D84...as a child I became obsessed with him for a spell and never, never found his face terrifying 🤣🤣
love how at the end he said "10" characters, and showed cassandra
no Sara Kingdom?
My list includes :
Jenny (Doctors Daughter)
River Song (more permanently than just a recurring character)
Jack Harkness (more than just recurring).
What's his name from "The Lodger" episode (where the Doctor (Matt Smith) thinks he's a pretty cool soccer player! (Not!)).
Sarah Jane (again).
K-9 (again).
Peter Davidson Doctor (again).
Donna's grandad, Wilf
If ever they meet, Sally Sparrow.
