    Tay I new this vlog would be good, but it totally knocked me off my feet so to speak. I’ve had the honor and privilege to be there in away to watch as this sculpture was created from a log to the piece you see here today. This Indian Chief tugs at my heart in so many ways. What a magnificent sculpture this turned out to be! It is always AMAZING to me how TayMarie creates her pieces of art with a chainsaw. Add in her artistry with a paint brush and rattle cans and in this case no help from a airbrush is second to none. What a wonderful vlog to celebrate this impressive accomplishment! Can’t wait to see what her chainsaws might be creating next. I know it will be something good. Stay tuned! Bravo to you my sweet talented friend!!! ☺️💛

    Your proportions were Spot On. You have found the skill set that God has given you. In the fall, I carved a mountain man skinning a rabbit, and I struggled with symmetry.

    • @TayMarie23
      @TayMarie23  9 місяців тому

      That sounds like a complex carving!! Wow! Yes, symmetry is always difficult, make sure you stop carvings every few minutes, take a few steps back, and look at your work. That will help a bit with your symmetry, if you left too much material one side it will be easier to see with a little distance. Also take pictures on your phone and flip them, helps identify things that are off!

      @@TayMarie23 3m P100 2297 are the filter. I have a question , is white pine nice to carve on ? Sorry two questions , how dry does the wood need to be to make sure it doesn’t do something funky later? Thanks George

    • @TayMarie23
      @TayMarie23  8 місяців тому

      White pine is great! At least here in Maine it’s abundant, cheap to free, and always available, hence why it’s my go to wood. In a perfect world I would carve cedar more for it’s outdoor resiliency and weight but cedar doesn’t get big here like it does over west.
      You never have to wait for your logs to dry. Carving green is the traditional way of carving, easier on the tools and your body. I like my logs to sit around just long enough that it starts cracking (usually around 3mo) so I can strategically place the cracks towards the back of the carving.

New log was dropped off the night before a big snow storm and I spent hours on end trying to remove the new log from the frozen ground. Took weeks until I could start on the new log. If you aren’t counting all those hours, I would say I got about 70-80 hours into this one?

    The Indian Chief was amazing. Ballpark figure on price ? 1000's ?
    I am in south Louisiana and would love to have a carving of yours.

      Let’s just say this customer got a really really good deal 😂 I don’t know what I would charge for something like this again, it took me over a month of work! I think when I broke down how much I made on this carving it was about $6 an hour…not counting supplies 😂 People are so hard, definitely a few 1000s!

    Question if I may 🤔 ?
    All your off cuts? You seem to treat with a bit of respect in my eyes, you don't just toss them aside 😊.
    So would i be right in guessing that ! you either use them for maybe hand carving for yourself or others or sold on for that type of thing.
    After all nothing these days seems to come free does it ??
    Also guess you have to buy the logs in the first place.
    Cheers Les.

      Thank you for the kind words! I try to waste as little as possible so the larger scraps like the ones made from this project go into a different pile where I carve smalls out of them or use them for glue ups and whatnot!

      @@TayMarie23 I’m glad that you addressed the respirator, and that you always show yourself wearing one. So many woodworkers never wear one. Maybe you can talk to Chainsaw Jenna about the importance of saving one’s lungs.

    • @TayMarie23
      @TayMarie23  8 місяців тому

      Too long! Probably 2 months of work between other projects and what not! The first log I carved ended up being infested with carpenter ants so after a week of work I had to scrap it and start over! This project was a pain as much as it was a joy haha!

  • @MichaelHerrick-qn6ld
    @MichaelHerrick-qn6ld 18 днів тому

    what will you do with all the scrap.

    • @TayMarie23
      @TayMarie23  17 днів тому

      Some of it gets used for smaller carvings and some of it gets burned! Almost all the logs I use are destined for hog fuel so it's nice to save a lot of it from the burn pile :)

    • @pinkeyswoodshop
      @pinkeyswoodshop Рік тому

      How do you resist the urge to post teaser videos of your progress. You know, before the piece is actually finished.? That's kind of why my Video of of my. German Shepherd bust came out in 3 parts. And it's also why I've already posted 3 videos of my new big project, and it's still not done.😂😂

    • @TayMarie23
      @TayMarie23  Рік тому

      I do that mostly because of my Patreon. They get to see the daily progress of my carvings and video updates! But I do have a few teaser shorts I plan to release on my current big project!

  • @daveschoenung568
    @daveschoenung568 11 днів тому

    What do you do with all the chunks you cut away

    • @TayMarie23
      @TayMarie23  11 днів тому

      The larger chunks are put to the side for small carvings and anything that can't be made into a carving gets thrown in the burn pile! Unfortunately since I carve mostly pine, it cant be burnt for heating fuel and most of the wood I carve was destined to be burned as hog fuel anyway, so it's nice I get to save a majority of it from waste!
      Since I do this full time I have been trying to think of creative ways to make more use out of the scraps. Might invest in a muncher/chipper to make and sell mulch as a side hustle 🤔
