Forms submitted for leaves of absence for PN, SL, or CPN are just documentation provided management informing them of your leave and do not require management approval.

I submitted a form for two weeks off because I was getting married and going on my honeymoon. I gave the boss six months notice. Boss told me, “I’ll take a look and let you know if it’s approved.” I told her, “No, I wasn’t asking for approval. I’m merely letting you know as a courtesy. I will not be in the office for two weeks.” Some companies really think they control your whole life.

Worked for a small company once, let my boss know I needed some time off 6 months in advance and he told me to bring it up closer to the date. Asked again 3 months in advance and he said the same thing. Kept going like this for a while. At 1 month before the day I told him I was buying tickets and reserving a room and he really needed to let me know if there was going to be a problem and he still wouldn't commit.
3 days before I remind him that I'm leaving and he tells me I can't because he never approved it and he needed me there. I wouldn't have it. I told him that I gave him plenty of notice and plenty of chances to tell me no. Everything was paid for. Everybody knew I was coming. There was no way I could cancel at that point and if he really had a problem with it he could fire me, but I was leaving regardless.
When I came back after that, nobody said a damn thing, but every time I needed time off after that I didn't ask, I just told him I wasn't going to be there about a month in advance.

I have worked with those. Very immature. That is not what is being discussed here. This is a person USING THEIR ALLOTED PTO, and TELLING THE BOSS IN ADVANCE about times they will be unavailable and hence DOING THE ADULT RESPONSIBILITY of keeping anyone who requires that information up to speed, as opposed to leaving them hanging without any store preparation. You should not be penalized for being off when yoy have to be, and only using the amount of time you get to be off as requested, instead of abusing it on a whim. You short of staff? Then hire more people or pay better, or cut store hours a bit. Maybe you can afford to ask somebody to switch hours or offer a temp job. Its not difficult for a boss to do their job, of being yknow, A BOSS, anymore than it needs to be difficult to be an employee who shows up every day and doesn't complain about it or slack off. If our job is to serve you, then your job FUNDAMENTALLY IN PRINCIPLE, is supporting the workers so that we may properly better work for you. Hence you have better functioning employees, hence you make better profit. See how that makes sense??

Unlimited PTO is actually considered a bad thing by many employee advocates. It can't be accumulated for payout, and people, on average, take less time off when they aren't allotted a certain amount annually. Employers KNOW this, which is why so many have started switching to Unlimited PTO. Your personal experience may differ, of course.

Fast forward and I'm beat down, tired of dealing with the idiot assistant manager they sent to the store and decide man I need to go on vacation. To which I was denied, but the other managers from our sister store whos shift and shit I covered for their vacation didn't get denied (never make yourself kore valuable than your wage kids companies don't give a fuck about you) which lead to me waiting for us to get our usual big church catering for a Sunday, told the owners no worries, I'll handle it. So the night before I set up everything in the store like normal, set out all the extra stuff and just never came to open or unlock the store. The produce, profits and reputation they lost that day fucked em up pretty bad and forced the owners to start covering shifts nearly full time.

If PTO is part of your compensation, it is not subject to approval, although a manager might reasonably ask for advance warning or if you could make sure a particular task is handed off. People get sick without notice and people go to funerals for people they didn't expect to die and have dental emergencies and doctor appointments all the time. Those are no more important than attending your kid's school play or moving your friend into a new apartment. Your employer has no right to your private health or relationship details, so you can happily cite those in refuse to explain what you're taking earned leave for. Give reasonable notice when you can, but don't imply they have any right to the details, or refuse and tell you no. If they claim they're short-handed, firing you should be the last thing they do.

That would be the equivalent of playing hooky from school. If you need a doctor’s note to take a sick day how the heck do you just take personal time off from your 5 day a week job? Stat holidays and vacation time isn’t enough? My husband has worked for the same company for the past decade+. He’s never been late or taken a sick day. He took a few days off when we got married and was not paid for it. He’s never taken a single day of vacation. He has worked double shifts any time he was asked to. He has worked a 7 day schedule for months on end when needed. He has never said no to extra shifts or hours. He wouldn’t even call in if he was in hospital for fear of being replaced. I pulled this string a lot because coming out of the military, I knew nobody's life was on the line wherever i could be working next (I worked for a tire shop and then a department store after my discharge.)
If management doesnt play this card about PTO, they'll play it when it comes to early outs, sick days and overtime.
One of those companies I worked with intentionally kept me at 38 hours a week, so that I'd do the work of a fulltimer without the added benefits of insurance + PTO.
My boss threw something across the shop, so I left and got fired on the spot. My next company treated me better, but that was because they hired me on as a fulltime worker from the start: their parttimers get the same runaround I got when i was with my old company.
Bottom line, if you want respect, apply for only fulltime positions. Parttime positions are not meant to be permanent, even if they try to entice you with a fulltime position

Where I work the approvals are more or less automatic as long as its not a situation where more than half the staff all want the same week off. You fill out and hand in the form, supervisor puts it on the schedule and signs off on it. In the case of too many people want off at the same time we discuss it to see if anybody is willing and able to shift to a different week but its first come first served if nobody can or will. Thats the policy anyway, realistically its never come up because we tend to talk with our coworkers about our vacation plans well in advance and make sure we don't overlap too much.

EU here ... PTO Personal Time Off...
20 days par year, 1 day after year 1 then every full 5th year another day => PAR YEAR
example for 7 years at the job you get 20+1+1 day of that year that you take whenever you want...
rules: 1 day off => 3 workdays ahead, preferably 1 week
1 full week or more => 4/6 weeks in advance if you please.
If you need more, you can ask, there is no obligation to alowe any more.
Courtdays are seperate and your boss can take up his chances with the judge ... I'll wait...
I never understud the Murican/Japaneese problem with no days of and begging your boss for a day off + your boss calling you back in on your day off. My boss does not even get my phone number.
Isn't USA the land of the free? Or is only your boss free and are white/asian/black united on the stockmarked owned cotton feelds?

This why having to asks 2weeks in advance is stupid.
Its not my fault that we're understaffed. That's a you problem. Not s me problem.
