      I work at a place where management has deigned that nobody will receive above a competent. No Very Goods and no Outstanding, regardless of what you do. Management review will not permit them to be issued. Previous to current management I was maintaining a Very Good, with just cause, and even received an Outstanding once.

      Conversely, on customer surveys, if we get anything less than a 5 from the customer, it's considered a failing score and management will want to know why.

    Nobody gets a 5 is BS. I did a Freedom of Information request one year at my work (major municipality, this info is public record) and lo and behold... Bosses and suckups were getting 5's! Big surprise! I published the entire file and the SH*T hit the fan! Lol.

      It’s also just an insane logic.
      “No one can get a 5” coupled with “it’s just something to aspire to”. It’s not something to aspire to, if it’s not actually available. Then 4 is the max score and what you aspire to. If the winner of a marathon gets the silver medal, cause “the gold was never attainable, we just say it exists so you’ll all run harder”, then what the fuck are we even doing?

      The beauty of working for the govt. Unfortunately private companies (even publicly traded) don't have a FIOA law to obtain equivalent info, but I'd bet it would probably be similar.

    I always tell them however you rate me today, is how I am going to work for the next year. If I am Average today, I will stay in my Average Lane all year and you can give the messes you like for me to clean up to one of the people you rated as Exceptional.

    "You're going to receive a 3% increase ..." Like they ever planned on doing anything other than a 3% increase, regardless of the evaluation.

      Our work does the same exact thing. Raises are 2-4% average is 3%.
      I was asked by a friend who was upper level management if it was worth it for me to get my Professional Engineering license for a 5% raise...
      I told him absolutely not. 😂
      I would need to bust my butt study for and pass the test. Pay for maintaining the license and Professional liability insurance.
      Total cost is $2k to $5k, so a 5% raise doesn't even cover the cost of the added liability.
      I would be better off working a part-time job for a year and toss the extra $25k in a growth mutual fund. I would actually come out ahead...
      Funny, thing is I actually did that, 5 years ago.
      It's up to 56k now. Makes 8k returns. Was a way better investment FOR ME. I got promotions regardless. I'm pretty sure they would have just included the 5% raise in one of promotions and I wouldn't have actually seen any change.

      Generally, we're given 3% across the board. I can't take away, unless someone is under disciplinary action. I can't add to anyone, unless I can take away from someone else.
      More than once, I've been completely overridden on my recommendation, and I know from experience I have to own that override as my decision or try to communicate that this is just the way it is. The worst thing I can do is blame the business policy.
      What really frustrates me is that I'm actually, generally goodish at advocating for my team and getting them above average raises and fast promotions - at least I'm better than any boss I've had.
      The baseline is 3%, for you to get more, someone else needs to get less, and to get less that someone needs to be an active detriment to the business, but not so detrimental that they get fired before the review process starts, because it's a per department increase of 3% for eligible employees.
      Your best case scenario is that someone is having some unprotected stuff go down in their life that causes them to get a writeup for attendance, within 90 days of reviews, and you're actually a top performer. Then you'll get above 3%

      ya guaranteed the whole company except the higher ups all got that 3% regardless of their work. The higher ups got a heck of a lot more.

      I always waited for the pay raise time. And when I got the 2 or 3% or whatever it was, I just took it. And I didn't complain. And I sent out 50 resumes tomorrow and I would get a job offer with a 10% increase. Then I would give them 2 week notice and my employer was always so shocked that I was so unhappy. And I would tell them I was not unhappy, just vastly underpaid. And their standard HR response was, what, is money the ONLY reason why you do this job? Obviously, they knew I was underpaid and did nothing about it. And I was like, yes. Of course. I am here to make money. And then THEY get all indignant and nothing good comes of that conversation but at that point I am emotionally and professionally checked out and I stopped listening to them.
      Pay raise time is the worst time for me in my professional career because I am never happy with what they offer. And its usually a signal for me to tell them it is time to leave. But they are absolutely shocked when I pull the trigger because I never gave them any signs that I would do so.

      Except, someone along the way said "paying attention" and "back slaps" worked as well and they had a study to show it. And that study was accurate, except for one thing, it didn't do follow ups. I think at first the employee thinks they are going to get a promotion or better raise, but then that doesn't happen. Eventually the employee learns the company is just giving them BS and they are never getting a raise above the average or a promotion. Then it all falls apart and management doesn't ever figure it out. Employees have caught onto their BS plan.

      Actually, I don’t think that pay figures as high in the research as that statement indicates. Rather surprising. There’s a difference between getting paid well and being paid enough to feel respected, but there are other ways that employees have often said that they want to feel respected, and it often involves getting fair feedback and having, some say so in certain elements of their work.

      @@oolala53 I think once you're being paid enough that you feel it's fair for the work you're doing, more pay comes with diminishing returns. You also have to look at what kind of relationships you have with the people at your workplace, whether you feel your boss/manager/supervisor has reasonable expectations of you, and whether you have a good work/life balance. I once quit a very, very well-paying job over those things. To me, they fall under "fair treatment."

    I did this once. Sent my boss an email folder of praise I received during my probationary period. I was fired the next day because “tooting my own horn” made me a “poor fit” for the “office culture.” Losing that job was the best thing that ever happened to my career!

      Best example: Walmart vs Costco.
      Costco does a comparable volume of sales each year to Sam's Club (walmart) with an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE (that's x10) fewer people. Why? Because Costco actually compensates their employees fairly.

    This happened to me when I worked at a credit union; I dropped my resignation letter the next day! Thank goodness that I was in a great financial position to do that. Then management asked, what can do they to keep me from leaving; not a damn thing! NOTHING!

      They say when you have a job offer with another company that you are considering to ask your current company for a raise before you advise of your intent to leave. If it is rejected, submit your resignation and do not entertain any offers as they have already stated how they think of you.

      I would have gave them a high number. Much better then the one you were going towards, along with a contract that guaranteed a raise 5 or 7% more then COLA. A clause that required a substantial pay out if they wanted to terminate the contract. You find out real quick what they really think of you.

    At the last place I worked for, there was a category worth a lot of "points" on your annual review and it basically boiled down to "did you find a way to make the company more money or save money?" My manager said nobody ever got full points for that category. I said, "Hold on, I have an email saved from our financial officer when I made a recommendation to him about the type of gloves we order for the clinic. He said that was exactly the type of recommendation he was looking for." My manager was pretty surprised but when I was actually able to print out the email, he gave me full points for that category.
    The raise I got was still piddly but the satisfaction of beating the system was nice.

      I do the same!
      I save all emails, awards, year end reviews, special achievements, above and beyond recognition and put them in my resume file in my personal email.
      At the end of the year review …… it may be a little more $ than the average employee but I will take it !!

    I was hired to help in every department in a medical center, I required little training, little to no oversight and also helped train the older staff in their duties to better improve patient care I received multiple 5 star compliments and the managers of each department argue over who gets me to cover their needs. There was also another nurse hired at the same time, they did the bare minimum and even called off a bunch of times. We both got 3/5 during our quarterly reviews 2 quarters in a row. This got me in the feels

      This is why I don’t go above and beyond anymore, my last job I was a safety manager of a sand mine. An MSHA inspector showed up and demand that all unsafe citations be corrected. As a safety manager my job is to point fingers and say hey we need to do this and that. Me being a leader I went in and shoveled hundred pounds of sand. Excavated, yes excavated with a mini track hoe and skid steer thousands of pounds of sand. Just to help out. And prevent a shut down of the plant. Just to prove myself and do the right thing. They laid me off 4 weeks ago. Thank The Lord I found another job.
      Point here is. Never ever go anything over 100% for a job. They won’t appreciate it anyways. My new number is 99%.

    This video is not a lie. I’ve seen this on three of my previous jobs. They tell you that no one is perfect and if they rate you a five you have nothing to strive for the coming year. I work with excellence consistently because that’s who I am and I don’t know how to be mediocre, but when I resign they always miss me and never see it coming! I refuse to be used and under appreciated. You should too!

    Typical of so many companies. I had a boss who told me something similar about a 5, and I told him I couldn't work any harder or better and that no one else would be able to do what I do. He just sat there totally flummoxed. It doesn't matter if you do an excellent job or a mediocre job when you get the same 2% increase.

      Has happened to me repeatedly. And I need to stop being the good person with a solid work ethic & start being the slow buffoon like some of my colleagues are since they are getting the same pay or better & I have been having to carry a large portion of their weight within our department. They will regret the day I'm not there anymore, because they still haven't been able to replace me or even match me.

      My job was outsourced 7 years ago, and in the months before we left, I decided I would care about the job the same amount that the company did. My customers didn't suffer for it, but the bullshit internal procedures that were just plain stupid and pointless, I stopped doing. All the times I worked my ass off for them, all the extra work I took on, all the guilt I felt when taking a mental health day, is all meaningless now. None of it matters anymore and that stress was all for nothing. NEVER bend over backward for a company because they WILL screw you over.

    I worked at a company that used this exact review scoring system, with the "No one gets a 5." There was gentleman we worked with who was *never* tardy or absent (literally not a single time), and was everyone's go-to to cover shifts for call-ins or emergencies. He *always* said Yes to covering shifts, staying late, coming in early, etc. On his annual performance review they gave him a 3 for attendance. There was outrage from all employees 😄 They gave everyone 3s for literally everything. Star employee getting lined up for promotion? 3. Drug addict nodding out during your shift? 3.

      This was me. I did nearly 600 hours of overtime one year because I didnt mind helping others. When management told me I meant jackall to them and my employee file was average at best. I stopped caring entirely. Dont call me, my max sick leave gets actually used now instead of losing days at max, and ah yes I'll take my vacation now. When management doesnt care or notices me covering for five people every week and doing double shifts for my weekends. Nah fam Im not caring either.

    I was hired to help someone out in a team. That person quit in a rage a few weeks later and I had to cover for them even though I barely got started. I did excellent and they never had to hire a new person. Still got an average review for doing the work of 2 people in my first quarter at the company and dealing with his outbursts while he was still at his desk. K. I quit.

    Meeting with the HR rep that can't approve anything is about as useful as meeting with a car salesman who has to go ask his boss during every step of the negotiation. Its a waste of time for everyone involved, yet nearly everyone blindly accepts it.

      HR also works FOR THE COMPANY, so they'll protect the company before you. Any act taken that appears to help an employee is really helping THE COMPANY avoid a lawsuit. Every decision made by HR is in the interest of the company.

    I worked for a company that after 7 years gave me a sabbatical of 8 weeks. It had to be taken all at once. My review came after my sabbatical. I also was told I did a great job but was down graded because I didn’t contribute compared to other employees. Their reasoning was that because I took the sabbatical I was not contributing for those eight weeks. I wasn’t the only one this happened to.

    That's nothing. When I worked for CVS, the manager that hired me bragged about the "high wage" she was starting me with because she wanted me to quit my other job and work full time for her. I didn't commit to that because I was planning only working there only temporarily for the holidays or transferring closer to where I lived if I stayed. My commute was an hour and a half. So flash forward to my first annual review and I now in a different store with a manager who barely knows me. I get told that my pay rate is "capped" so I will never be given a raise because I am locked into that amount. That's when I decided that I am "capped" on how much I am willing to do for CVS. I then spent the next two years trying to quit and also being a rather useless employee. Since I was hired to do truck and stocking, then that's only what I did . If a customer came to me looking for photos to be printed at 3 am, nope. Come back at 9 when the people that know how get here. I am not learning anything without a raise.

      Exactly. I work for a company that spouts BS about internal career moves but pays 1-1.5% increases and 1k bonuses. They expect you to volunteer for projects and reward you with titles but no extra money, just more responsibilities. We're inadvertently "taught" to do the least possible to get our paychecks...

They had this cult like obsession with selling Square trades, that silly insurance protection plan that they force employees to badger customers to get, and credit cards. One day I got 10, and was told that "That's horrible. You should have a lot more". I walked out.

We get a 2% yearly increase, zero "annual reviews", no bonuses, no paid holidays and vacation days that can't be used because the time is generally revoked. Complain about it, and you'll hear "but it's RETAIL!!" I practice malicious compliance. Do EXACTLY what is expected, what is allowed or what the online manuals say to do...and let the consequences happen. Going above and beyond is what employees do when they are treated well, paid appropriately and appreciated.

    Literally me last year. So this year, ill act my rating. What they said was "to get a five, you basically have to cure "cancer". i said, respectfully, i wasnt hired to cure cancer. That left a nasty taste in my mouth and i no longer go above and beyond.

      I once worked on a months' long project, 10-14 hour days, 6 days a week while attending to a loved one who was ill. In the end, I got a "meets requirements". No recognition for the effort. I now do the least possible and NEVER volunteer for any extra work. F them

    I had a boss that did give me higher than a 3 on most of my duties and I had a 5 on one of them. He told me that no matter how great I did, the powers that be, would never allow him to give me a higher raise or a title change.
    That was his way of saying that I was doing too much for a company that didn’t give two craps about me or what I did. He always did as much as he could to compensate me for what I did. He would have me do payroll on a holiday that landed on a Sunday, which took me 5 minutes, but he told me to charge an hour. So, I’d get paid $100 for 5 minutes of work. Or he wouldn’t make me take PTO when I had to leave early for an appointment or a sick kid. Things like that. Those were things that were in his power to do.
    My current boss gave me a 6% raise one year. 😊 He was angry that this year, the new owners wouldn’t approve anyone getting above the standard 3%. He said that myself and two others deserved more than that because of what the three of us took on.

    At my last job, I consistently got similar feedback to what was mentioned in this video. My supervisor told me they don't give 5s because that means you're exceeding your current role and should be moved up. So I got a 4.

      I had an ‘exceeds expectations’ review one year, and also received a promotion and a good pay bump. Next year, my Director said that although I’d exceeded expectations once again, NOBODY was ever allowed to receive that rating two years in a row. NOBODY could possibly be that good, even though my Director had just told me how I’d done it, so I’d be stuck with my piddly 3% raise for having merely met expectations. Yep, I immediately began preparing for my exit. When I gave my notice, my Director turned beet red with anger, telling me I was nothing but a whiner and a complainer, and that she’d have my position filled within 6 weeks. Hah! It took her 9 months to hire 3 - yes, THREE - full time people to fill my vacated position. That was after 25% of my job was pushed over to one of my colleagues that I’d left behind. It still feels so good to have left that company. I wish I’d done it earlier.

    I once had a performance review where they said my work was excellent, but I had to work on being more sensitive and tactful with my peers. I asked how much this I acted my increase, they said, $500 per year. I responded, that’s about $2 per day. It’s worth that to me to keep the fools away.

    I was a manager for years. I would routinely give members of my team a 5 only to have my manager change it at the end. I was given the same BS reasoning that this video presented. It's all just a game for them.

    Back in the early 80’s, I was given a somewhat less than satisfactory review when I absolutely knew I was a very decent contributor. I was the only guy there in the role and there was no one else there that could perform what I did. Sometime after that review I asked the boss why he gave me a bad review. He said, because he didn’t want to have to justify a raise with head office. About 6 months later I quit for another job that paid me nearly twice was much. About 3 months after I quit, my previous company went out of business. Karma….

    😢😢I took a trainee position where I had significant knowledge from a prior position in another office. I had a better rating than the other trainees. The supervisor gave me a satisfactory because I wasn’t as knowledgeable as the senior level employees. I complained that the senior employees were a higher pay scale and I should only be compared to the trainee position. When the manager saw my complaint, he agreed with me and fortunately changed my schedule to a 5. 😊😊😊I realized That supervisor never wanted me so I ended up transferring.

    Former employer had the same system.i was with them for 10 years and never got credit for the extra I did. My current employer I was with for 6 months before I got a merit raise because I developed a template to help make sure we sent all the right info in our referrals. I am rewarded and praised for my work and it still feels odd to hear it

      The worst part is the ones telling you this BS are hardly ever the ones making the call. I've seen too many people complain that when they were in a management position, when they tried to give max scores to the workers that earned it, they were told to lower the score because the company doesn't want to give the raise that would be required for a max score.

    In the office and my supervisors were angry about it because they had a vendetta to try to prove i was a bad employee. Legally I was allowed to have them in my HR file but the HR lady refused to put them in. Work sucks

    I worked for a company for 14 years.. After 10 years of getting a 5 they decided they couldn't (wouldn't) get me better than a 4, telling me they no longer give 5s. However, when I explained to my Mgr that yes they do since my husband that worked for a different manager was still receiving 5s all I got was crickets. My pay was good but after 4 years of that it wasn't good enough to stay.

    My job is like this as well. Nobody is in the "meeting expectations" range. The best we can hope for is "almost there" because their expectations are unreasonable.

    I used to work for a store chain where the appraisal criteria was 'exceed', 'meet', or 'fall short'.
    And guess what - "Nobody ever exceeds".
    Fall short and you got no increment that year.
    After a couple of years of this they ramped it up by bringing in that a fall short was also a disciplinary matter, with reviews at 3 monthly intervals.

    I get a 1.5% increase in hourly wage every 6 months no matter what I do, but this year when management asked me to cover for other departments I told them to do better on my raises or I won’t be covering for others that I feel are lazy or not completing their tasks. I was told they can’t do better so I adjusted my work ethic after 16 years of service. I look forward to my next wage increase and a potential conversation about how new hires are getting paid ore than me.

    I had this same conversation and demanded a higher increase. I told them it was unbelievable that they would always try to come in lower than what I asked for, every time, and that I wouldn’t stand for it and knew my worth. Got the additional increase a week later. Darn right.

    My husband is an HR Manger and he was told when reviewing his employee’s that only one person can fall into the top percent and then a certain number have to come in the middle and the rest have to fall below. He said all his employees worked really hard all year and only 1 was a slacker but after he followed his bosses rules 3 of his best employees quit. Management didn’t care, they replaced them with one cheaper worker who had no clue what they were doing. Then management doubled the work load. Toxic AF

      My last employer did this. I am no longer with them. 5 was for 1 out of 200 people. Amazon goes a step further and puts pips on the bottom 25%. So if everyone did well 1 out of 4 were threatened with termination and had to be fired. Backstabbers galore and fear.

    One of my colleagues got into a shitty situation at his yearly review last year. They told him he would get 0% raise because he only worked on 1 mission all year long and that didn't deserve a raise...
    Thing is: he asked all year long to work on another mission because he wanted to expand his horizons and learn some new skills... I saw him ask time and time again. And time and time again they told him "nah, we don't have anything", while taking students (paid way less than us) to actually work on what he wanted.
    Result, he pulled out a resignation letter out of his bag right at the end of his yearly review and slapped it on the manager desk. They lost a very good coder, his new boss won a very good coder, and he won a very good salary.
    Never let your managers take you down people! Just search elsewhere, you are valuable and you deserve to get the right salary!

    As a manager i actually developed a tracker and clear achievable goals for workers to hit. I wanted to remove bias and guess work. That way if an employee doesn't agree with the assessment I can refer to the clear chart. It removed A LOT of gruff and complaints from my department.
    Then my boss got wind of it on the 2nd year when almost everyone got 5s.
    She said we can't give 5s.
    I explained and showed the chart in excruciating detail. It was a very indepth and systematic. The goals were hard to achieve even. But because workers knew the goals they did them. The plan was to increase the ask a little bit every year, but to make it clear so guys could actually be 5s.
    After being told we can't do what I did, I found it disheartening that they intentionally want to keep people down.
    No....I want people to KNOW why they are or aren't awesome. No bias, no bs, just facts. Everyone appreciated it.
    But I think some bosses really just want to be bias and short change workers to save a few bucks. Yes the more I'd give in raises it did impact my bonus.....but performance improvements made the bonus even better. So it's really a win win for everyone.......cutting peoples wages is just the losers way of achieving a selfish goal.

    My first annual review is coming up in a month and if I don’t get at least 3% or more then I’m not gonna be happy. I literally have so many positive notes in my personnel file and zero negative. Anything under 3% doesn’t meet the average rate of inflation and is therefore not really an increase.

    I always used to ask: "What do I need to do to get a 5 next time?" at my annual performance review. I never got an answer, but I know what the answer is. Suck up to your bosses, be one of the "good ol' boys", golfing buddy, or a family member and that helps more than any performance.

    Some companies use the "totem pole" system. Prior to the yearly evaluations, the bosses get together and rank everyone in the department in order of whatever criteria they use - a "totem pole." Then, your score on the yearly evaluation reflects where you are on the totem pole (which you will never see) and your evaluation is "adjusted" to justify your totem pole ranking. IOW - you moved mountains and walked on water all year, but you only got a 3 out of 5 because some slacker drinking buddy of the boss was higher than you on the totem pole, and he got a 4.8. Yeah...and they can shove that totem pole where the sun don't shine, sideways 😱

    Nobody ever gets a 5. This is just a way for them to save money. I've yet to find a company that cares if you can pay your bills working full time. Wish legislation would be written to show companies they aren't allowed to cheat their workers anymore.

    I was such a stellar employee that my old job wrote on my review “needs to ask more questions.” Even though they had no complaints about my work ethic or thoroughness.
    Those bums literally complained about me knowing my job to justify my 60 cent raise. Gave them a 3 day notice when I got hired for a job that would pay me $8 more an hour.

    I worked 3 double shifts a week for three months in a nursing facility. (Long ago in a mythical place known as Colorado) I even had to sleep there sometimes from exhaustion and my commute time. When it came time for a discussion about a raise (from $2.15 to $2.45 an hour), they said i hadn't worked enough! I walked out and never went back except to pick up my final paycheck as I didn't trust them to mail it. That place closed within two years.

    I quit a job after I got a small pay increase that was insulting. I Got generous pay increases until I topped out at 5 years. The increase my last year was insulting so after a month of getting paid not what I wasn’t worth I had to leave. I suggest everybody do the same or find a job that might pay less but has more work/life balance.

    My current job does this. I was told “Nobody ever gets a full exceeds expectations because everyone can always do better.” I make sure to only meet expectations where I work now.
