I had a boss that was like this a LOT. She never actually asked about anything specific, it was always "Can you tell me what happened today?" etc.
I caught on after the first time it happened to me, so the next time I just said "No? Not really... you'll need to get the ball rolling on this cause I'm drawing a blank."
Time after that I went on this huge long winding story that I *knew* wasn't what she was asking about, but I still told it anyway to see how long it took for her to interrupt.

Someone I used to work for: 'You don't see me taking off on holidays, I don't just get to leave', disregarding the fact that I submitted my leave a month and a half before, and watched half the workplace walk into the assistant manager's office the week I was supposed to go and have their leave approved that day or within the week.

They could never acknowledge hypocrisy lol.
My boss lectured me on deciding to wait to put in work notes til I got home instead of staying even later. It was Friday and I was already kept 40 minutes late at the office largely because (here’s the extra rich part about this) I helped throw her a party to celebrate her wedding. Told me how it doesn’t matter that I use transit to get home (have no car, not paid enough to buy one) and that by deciding to put my notes in at home on a Friday I was making my transit her problem. Keep in mind others do this everyday, and regulation-wise and policy-wise it’s fine. My job is 100% client-facing and 100% in office. Meanwhile, my boss regularly shows up 1-3 hours after we open when she doesn’t work from home, and works from home more often than not. She also always leaves between 3-5; she never waits for our office to actually close.

At my last job at an accounting firm, the boss forced everyone to eat lunch together around a table EVERY DAY. It was a small company of around 5-8 people. If I wanted to eat alone I had to make up an excuse about how I am running errands. And he would get visible upset and pout about it. He reminds me of this guy.

I had seen a lot of people leaving early after working heavy hours and was curious. Just wanna do what I do and do it well. For a few months after first starting I heard this "I wanna see you move up" line way too much and eventually told my general manager in the least lazy looking way I could think of that I was fine where I was and want to keep doing what I'm doing, if I need to do things differently or better then please let me know, but otherwise I am totally fine with being your night auditor.

I did the math and sent them an email showing that's not true... that give our sales we would be making significantly less. They offered me a promotion.
