The Chicago Royal Airs were an absolutely superb corps, and their music show was head and shoulders above every corps in 1965. Triple tonguing solo sopranos and playing in such a high register, even the top junior corps like the Cavaliers and Blessed Sacrament didn't have sopranos doing this. Or the Boston Crusaders. This was a fabulous music show, excellently arranged by the immortal Truman Crawford. Brilliantly performed by the Royal Airs. The sadness here is they disbanded after the 1968 season. By the way, the musical selections the Royal Airs played here were several numbers in the Yankee Rebels shows in the late sixties early seventies and arranged by Truman. Royal Airs a truly legendary drum corps and among the best of all time.
Was there for that performance . Greatest Royal Airs show ever !!! Inspired me to join . Marched all of 1967 . Drumline . Indoor competition acoustics were perfect for recording . Still have that performance album. Walked 10 miles to the P.O. to pick it up then.
All of the recordings from the McCormick Place a good friend of mine Mike Johnson he still lives in Florida I believe his father did all the recordings reel-to-reel and I had the opportunity to hear many of them firsthand excellent recordings who's ever handling the recordings right now as far as posting them you might want to try and contact Mike Johnson he was in the American Spirit senior alumni drum and bugle Corps with me along with John Dowling we were some of the founders of the organization anyway, if you can get a hold of Mike Johnson you might be able to get more recordings ,thank you. John Dowling, may he rest in peace, he was a very good friend of mine.
@@robertkleba935 Robert thank you for mentioning Dale Johnson's name I totally forgot his first name thank you very much these recordings in my opinion or one of the best ever of all drum corpse, John Dowling he was a very close friend of mine may he rest in peace he was teaching our Drumline in American Spirit and Mike Johnson was one of our snare drummers I hope Mike is still with us I lost touch since I moved out of Florida. Bob thank you for your posting responding to my post.
Myself and some friends went to this event, seating was terrible, rain stopped the out side show, but the hearing of corps and the record was excellent, gone are the greats, RA, Norwood park, Vanguard and many more. Go Kenosha, WI Kingsmen GO ARMY
Mitch Markovich was percussion head & arranger. Ed Roberts was the tenor tech. This is the 1st time anyone used 3 different pitched bass drums. The snare book was way ahead of its time with flam drags, extreme & musical back-sticking, 32nd note singles at the end of The Seed solo. (It sounds like a double stroke roll and it's a tad slow but clean.) Now have some fun and see if you can hear it! MM
Marched snare with The Royal Airs this year. Best seat in the house. Unbelievable experience. What a year !!!

Yes, Dale Johnson, Mike's dad, did the recording. Also recorded the announcement of the scores. I listen to it often, like this afternoon.
