All horn arrangements by Hy Dreitzer, except music from West Side Story which was arranged by Ed Morrisey. (Also, short excerpt from "Why Don't Cha Do Right " played after West Side story was arranged by Lou Voss). That short excerpt was dropped from the show by the time of the 1966 VFW Nationals.
Best time in my life was marching with the Vanguards in 1966. Shortly after that I went into the Marine Corps. I listen to our music very often and it's still like I'm right there on the field with Sam, Jay, Billy, Groso, and that drum line that was awesome, and Frank Pamper reminding me of my 2 left feet...lol!!! Semper Fi to all my brothers and sisters of 1966.
They were on the rise here. '66, no doubt. And '68, '69 especially when the Hair/ Aquarius themed show scored by Hy Dreitzer. That '69 show was amazing, with incredible Brass work and grreat drum execution, they brought the house down with their '69. It's pretty suspicious to me they didn't win the '69 VFW Finals in Philly. They were perfect in every phase.
Thanks for the great compliments! In 1969 Hy Dreitzer only wrote two songs, Simple gifts/Fanfare for the Common Man and Spellbound. The other songs were written by Dave Richards or Dave Hill.
@@desplainesvanguard-drumbug9246 You're very welcome Vanguard. I didn't realize the other two gentlemen wrote the other charts, but the whole show was great. I believe that they were at the1969 VFW Finals in Philly and should have won it. They were the best corps in the country that year. We competed at the VFW Nat'l's in Philadelphia in the prelims only. We were the Sacred Heart Crusaders of Manville NJ and placed 41st.
@@tommcconville4270 yes Vanguard 69 Showmars outstanding I was at Philadelphia for the Nationals, and I thought they were the winners as well. That's my opinion.
I was one of the Southsiders, Tom, Mickey Antosiak, Bryan Johnston, Steve Stepanek and Dan Monk Bronovic. Boy Guard Rifles and Flags. '65-'67. Hi to Baggie and Saggy.
Hi Michael, good to hear from you! There is a Vanguard Reunion in Des Plaines in September 2018 - would be great to see you if you can make it. Also, the Vanguard is on facebook. There is a public fan page and a private alumni page on facebook.
I've listened to all of the Vanguard years of music posted and have graded other major drum corps as well in the same era. By far, in my professional opinion, Vanguard 1966 horn line and drum line beats all others "Hands Down".
Marched '63 Chi-Angels, '64 Spartans prior to Vanguard. Majority of the horn players went to R.A. and Norwood. We carried 9 lb. rifles. Some of us South Siders went on to form the St. Augustine Lancers and 3rd Battalion who competed in The Midwest Circuit Color Guard. Ask Steve Fuggie or Dennis "Dayo" Evans of R.A.
I always liked the IL corps ! knew some good friends in these corps, Myself and brother played with the Kenosha Kingsmen, 1964 to 1970, sad all the great corps long gone, other than the Cavies that have held in there. Interesting back then with the military draft, how a good piece of a corps man power could be gone, myself I enlisted in the USN and then unto the Army retired now from the military.. My brother and I would get to what shows we could get to since 2007, Sadly he passed away unexpected in 2016. I did play with the Mariners one season, but missed the Kingsmen, senior corps was more fun ! Excellent big horn line sound on this video. Hope to hear from fellow past drum corps NUTS ! GO ARMY
Thank you for your service and I can relate my twin brother was attending drama and he passed in 2010 may he rest in peace along with all previous drum and bugle Corps members that have going on.
West Side Story concert is well done especially the ending solo sop at 8:58 very unique transition arrangement . Not an easy solo phrase to teach , well done .Lots of individual talent is evident. Well executed drumming . Eastern style influenced arrangements . Was Hy D. involved ?
Old time, you talking about Des Plaines Vanguard? '69 concert was Bali Hai, arranger was Dave Richards, Hy wrote Fanfare for the Common Man and Spellbound for them. We saw them at VFW NAT'L'S, in prelims 1969 in Philadelphia when I was with Manville Crusaders. Astounding show.
Midwest Dream ? Wasn't that the show in Milwaukee, WI at the Old U of W stadium , sponsor was the Royal Emperors, Milwaukee, WI was a nice corps, but Milwaukee had way to many corps. To support ? Vanguards horn was always super ! Big Horns A + Go Mariners Kenosha Kingsmen Go Army retired Hope to hear from past Drum Corps NUTS !
Great memories of being a member for a while... Thanks.

My apologies, West side Story was Vanguards concert no. '66, need to get on the same page. Not sure if that's Hy's arrangement however.
