My daughter currently follows DCI, and I wanted to show her what the Royal Airs were doing in 1967, my only year with them. I was in the color guard and part of the group that joined the Royal Airs from the McHenry Viscounts.
I enjoyed the Mc Viscounts as well as the Custer's Bde, and the short lived Spartans. When they folded actually gone were 3 corps. Cougars and St. Michaels My brother and I played with the Kenosha, WI for many years , RA and the other great IL corps were always at the Kingsmen show, Concourse of Champions'
RA The Great Ones ! Excellent music & drill ! My brother and I played with the Kenosha, WI Kingsmen for many years, in the Kingsmen we had guys from RA, Vanguard, Norwood Park, Racine Scouts, Kilts and from the many Milwaukee WI corps. RA and the other great IL corps were always at the Kingsmen show, Concourse of Champions' One of my best pals was from RA Roger Flood the 60's were the best of times for corps !
1967 CYO Nationsls for certain. My father marched with the Boston Crusaders that year. Boston took the title, Chicago Cavaliers finished a pretty distant second, BS Golden Knights were 3rd and the Royal Airs 4th.
The various shadings caused by the old style lighting actually looks better than today's bland perfect lighting that makes night shoes look like a daytime show.
In my opinion this is the best video of the Chicago royalaires. Thank you for the Post unfortunately I never got to see when they were competing, but I did get to see them many times as an alumni Corps, and they were fantastic as well. Former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 thru 1968
I still remember the 1967 and 68 drum solos. Especially the one at 8:20 above. Especially the tenor rolls. One year they had alternating blue and red heads I think.
1967 - I remember it like it was yesterday : ) Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans - concert...........VFW Nat'l New Orleans............and who could forget that Voodoo Moon song!
The setting looks familiar. I marched with Boston in 1967. We won the CYO with the Chicago Cavaliers placing second and Sac third, I think the Royals were 4th. The '65 Royal-Airs were phenomenal. Did they go undefeated that year?
Even with the vintage footage - when they busted off the line like that, and in a straight line (so hard) blasting that great music...whoosh, the electricity still remains within the video.
Though it looks like a WW I gas attack. Better than a lame "I did it my way" that sounds like my 6th grade Friday assembly that is evidently boffo for modern day DC fans. Am I wrong, but did corps not exist to please the public as much as the judges? Just watched a current DCI clip-this show is much more entertaining if you care about the kids and the music. No wonder I haven't been to a live show in a few years. I live in Houston and there was a group that supported shows and kids and had a big preseason get together that folded when it became about the directors and staff and their careers and not about the kids!
Boy do I agree with you 100%. In my opinion DCI, is responsible for the demise of the activity. Yes they stole it from thousands of kids throughout the country, when drum and bugle Corp was sponsored by American Legion VFW and Catholic churches, local communities supported their favorite drum and bugle Corp. DCI turn the activity into a marching band competition, superimposed on the three ring circus. I started in Drum Corps in 1955 or 6. Played with the Floyd Bennett golden eagles from Brooklyn New York, after I turn 21 I joined the Long Island sunrises for 1964 through 1968. Today is June 3rd 2022.

Wow-what big color guard!
Hey John, Mark Holub. Nice to see this post. They were certainly one of the great Drum Corps!
'68 for sure...Voodoo Moon is SUCH a badass tune! Drill that year kept them down, IMO...staging probs etc...
Charlie wrote drill and designed shows for our color guard, "Canberra Brigade".
Nope. 1967. They didn't play Ballyhoo as the OTL in 1968.
THIS IS 1967.
@@BillBuck1972 I stand corrected. That's what I get for knowing a *little* bit...lol.
nope, 1967 for sure..68 was
Vaquero off the line
I think John Zimney(soprano) and Don Sonne (contra)
were marching this year. Knew them both when they came to the AFAcademy Corps
I'll ask him (JZ) in two weeks (2/17).

It was 1967 CYO Nats. 1968 closer was It was A Very Good Year. I was there dreaming of the day I could be in the RA's!
WHERE WAS DENNIS KRANC AND LOUIS KLOZIK KEN JANOWSKI
Even with the vintage footage - when they busted off the line like that, and in a straight line (so hard) blasting that great music...whoosh, the electricity still remains within the video.
