We were supposed to compete in Soldier Field. But it poured rain all day and the ground was so wet, marching would have been impossible. So, they moved the competition inside at McCormick Place. We had to make some changes in the drill because the area was a bit narrower than a football field. We put on a great show, but the Royal Airs played at the top of their game and won, deservedly so. We came in 2nd.
The indoor recording was recorded by Dale Johnson. I knew his son Mike Johnson in Florida oh, he was one of our members of American Spirit drum and bugle Corp, started by John Dowling may he rest in peace, Mike Johnson, and myself. Mike invited me over to his place and showed me all his father's recordings, I could not believe the number that he made he mainly recorded scores from the Midwest, that's why he was the one responsible for recording the indoor show, in 1965. Great memories love listening to Dale Johnson's recordings most of my recordings or either Fleetwood and Stetson the Richmond. I was totally unaware of the recordings made in the midwest by Del Johnson until I met Mike. Thank you Mike I hope you're doing well. PS We organized the American Spirit back in 19 92.
Several of our members from the Long Island sunrises, attended that indoor competition, they were sitting on the floor at the 50 yard line, I don't remember all the numbers I know Charlie Howell was one of them, maybe Bobby files, I can't remember I believe they were total of five or six. When they came back to Long Island they explained what a great competition and it was and how the sound was so different being inside as opposed to outside, the intensity was fantastic. Today's date is September 30th 2022. I was a member of the Long Island sunrises from 1964 through 1968. Great memories.
Myself and some friends went to this event, seating was terrible, rain stopped the out side show, but the hearing of corps and the record was excellent, gone are the greats, RA, Norwood park, Vanguard and many more. Go Kenosha, WI Kingsmen GO ARMY
I marched with Our Lady of Lourdes(Ma.) in 63 and then went over to The Majestic Knights of Charlestown from 64 to 65. raised in a drum corps family with my Father marching with the Princemen, My two other brothers loved corps too. One marching with me in OLOL. Just collected through the years and traded with good buddies and fortunately kept the recordings in a safe dry place. Wanted to share before anything happens to them. Hope you all like them. Thanks cfrost
Thanks for sharing this. Really unique to hear the indoor sound. Drums recorded very well. And heck ya gotta love the crowd erupting at the end of the opening fanfare of Bully. Classic!!!
Great indoor sound. French horns resonate. Dang those F notes on those horns, probably Getzens . Hear the the dbl buzz in Maria at 2:51 lead. Although my corps had new Getzens I wouldnt trade my Leedy Ludwig as the F note was clean perfectly everytime. Very different tubing configuration in the valve section . Looked better too.
Hello, I think ? looking back the Cavies had Holton & Ludwig Classic bugles, ( Made By Holton ) I was in the Kenosha, WI Kingsmen, we had a mix of Holton's, and Ludwig Classic line and a few new Getzens Bass Horns and contras. I played French horn and played a Holton and then a Ludwig Classic bass Horn. I agree " F Notes and a few others " some notes were to really hard to hit clear notes on them, The Older Holton's, The Ludwig classic model was easier to play. I bought one back then and a Ludwig Classic Bass Horn.
I remember going to compete with the cavies and the Royal Aires in the 60's , I was in St.Lucy's at the time and we pretty much knew we were going to lose.
+kenneth kunie just you? We really knew it too. As just about all of the more than what 100,000 Drum and Bugle Corps of that time. And of those few . Only a fraction . Just like our go around, yours and mine. in '64 , S.C..G.L
Hello Charles: Jimmy Walsh from.MK Jr's .... still here in Charlestown. TY so much for sharing these wonderful recordings. Awesome music; terrific memories. Question: Would you have -- or might you know who might have -- recordings of MK Srs for '63, '64 and '65?? Tks
Hi Jim , Thank you for the compliments about the recordings unfortunately I do not have any of those years you mentioned ..I sure wish I did . I'd love to hear them but as far as I know. No Luck. Still Lookin !!
John Sullivan Hi John. No I don't have a good copy of that recording TBO. Fleetwood has it for sale online if you really want it.. id suggest unless you can find it elsewhere, sorry bout that!
Myself and 12 guys from the Kenosha, WI Kingsmen where at this show.

I used to listen to this show all the time when I was a youth. Consider it the best recording from those days.
Same here . I'm a Royal Airs for life . But I was awful proud of the Cavies representing Chitown . We both brought the power . No doubt !
No dancing, prancing, or bells, the Chicago Cavaliers. Best corps during the 1960s. Real marching by real men.

Cavies horn line was really off this show.
Hello, Yes Agreed ! Solos were really off !
I remember going to the VFW Finals at McCormick Place. Every corps in the show sounded completely different as thet were playing indoors.
I marched with Our Lady of Lourdes(Ma.) in 63 and then went over to The Majestic Knights of Charlestown from 64 to 65. raised in a drum corps family with my Father marching with the Princemen, My two other brothers loved corps too. Best recording of a drum corps show from the 60s, because it was done indoors and the sound was cool.
wish i had the video of this show
