I think they need to train it more in adverse situations, or incorporate more code to better adjust to road conditions. That being said, the difference between using visually trained AI v.s the code is amazing. You're right, self driving is not designed to be used in dangerous conditions, it's made for convenience, but it's really amazing to see how it behaves in these situations.

It seems to me that for FSD to have any chance of being usable in these conditions it will need not just vision, but also constant feedback on wheel slippage that can adjust speed and stopping distance moment by moment, just like a good human winter driver does.
As you know, driving in snow/ice is not just one kind of thing. Conditions can change moment by moment: clear road, then 50 feet of ice, then clear. Fresh snow in temps below 20F might blow right off a road and be no problem. But fresh snow can sometimes be crunchy - nice and grippy for tires - until it packs and gets suddenly slippery! Add in covered lane markings and curbs, and cameras that can be blocked at any moment by thrown slush. This is going to be a tough problem to solve.
Roads in my area will look like yours tomorrow. I won't be doing any FSD testing! Cross Climate 2 tires look like a good idea though.

Yeah. That data definitely is being collected, as it uses that for traction control, but FSD might not be taking that data into account yet.

@@catbert7yes, traction control data is being collected, it is also being used by FSD, it's just that FSD is more confident in its own capabilities than we are.

FSD in snow/ice is so unnerving. And, the windshield wiper thing is so annoying. But it looks like V12 made some progress.

It's definitely an improvement. As for the Haloblk, I still use it. The charger magnet is very strong - which I like. Haven't used many of the other features much but I like the option to add them if I need to. I don't mind the bulkiness of the rig from the back side.

Wow. Obviously needs some more work with speed management on ice but insane how good it is at predicting lanes it can't see!
Can't much blame it for running over an invisible curb but that is something that will need to be solved, probably with local memory. Don't know Tesla has plans for that...
6:55: I think it was fine, actually. The tentacle was steering correctly to the right, hugging the outer curb.
8:55: What a weird time for it to freak out. Didn't seem to be a particularly confusing situation. But then, I feel like that's always how it goes with those. 🤷‍♂

It must have been trained on snow conditions because nothing of sunny driving is applicable here, it just doesn't quite have the competency level to handle the variable slip surface and the long horizon anticipation necessary for curling conditions. It did good in deducing invisible lanes, not quite disciplined in driving in tracks and not cutting corners. I actually think it should be doable to handle conditions like these relatively easily but can get tricky once the snow and ice is dense enough to risk getting stuck. But that's difficult for people too.
    On a side note, isn't Kum&Go a dubious business name? you say it's a coffee shop? :)

I got the update Thursday literally about a minute after it started one of the few snowstorms of the season in Minnesota. It did not do well at all. ua-cam.com/video/dtJrZt3W4yI/v-deo.htmlsi=WZAiBBLLC1NrHttz I didn't record on the way home but turning right from a red light after I left the convenience store it took off too quickly. I stupidly decided to see how it would handle it when it skid. It slammed my back left wheel into the curb. "Luckily" it was one that I have already been meaning to fix for curb rash caused by driving over potholes last winter when it was so bad that they were basically everywhere.
When it was clear the next day, version 12 still didn't impress so I'm not sure why it's so great for most people but not for me.
