- I recorded this concert nearly 20 years ago. Guthrie's performance gives you an idea of how advanced he was. He was light years ahead of most of the Pro-guitarists and still is. For the video, I used a conventional mediocre tape recorder or Camcorder. Because of the poor light of the venue, the footage is not great, but I tried to tweak it to improve it as much as I possibly could, the same with the sound. I did go to the Bassment a few times before this recording to see them, which is the venue in the footage, and at that time, I decided to try to record the next whole concert with the fear that they may not have allowed it, but they were fine with it. If I remember well, after recording and editing it at home, I gave a DVD copy to each one of the members. Sorry about some glitches in the footage, especially with the sound; it was recorded in tapes and then transferred to DVDs at the maximum quality possible at those times. At the time of the transfer, the application automatically cuts the footage into different parts (VTS files) but misses milliseconds at the end of each file before transferring to the next section.
Another decision I made, was not to title the tracks as I could not recognize all of them, so instead of naming just a few, I left it without titles to make them homogeneous. if anyone can help identify each song, that would be great, so we can pin all the titles under the video. This scratched a tremendous itch for me. For years I've wanted to hear a really Jazzy album from Guthrie. It's so fresh sounding, and this is something that happened nearly 20 years ago, just to be unearthed now. Great stuff.
He can't play jazz, he only plays superjazz, with bunch of another galaxy notes

Thanks for this good sir, this is really a special document of the band. Everyone knows that Guthrie is one of the best, but it might be easy to glaze over the fact that he's been the best for a long time...even while he was playing in relative obscurity, puffing on cigs indoors lol!

I loved those Thursday nights at The Bassment. Some nights it would be heaving with students from college/uni. Other nights would be really empty. As word got around other guitarists would show up to see the band and Guthrie perform. Dave Kilminster became a good friend. He also sometimes filled in for Guthrie if Guthrie couldn't make the gig. Great to see this again.
Yes! That's right! I took my guitarist cousin from Spain to Chelmsford once with the hope of seeing Guthrie playing, but unfortunately that Thursday he wasn't performing. Instead, Dave Kilminster was substituting him and he played amazingly, so my cousin went back to Spain not so disappointed.

They used to play at the Bassment in Chelmsford every Thursday
@@tipatinastrings That's right! I don't think they play there anymore or even if that venue (Pub) is still there. It was quite small for that kind of events, especially considering Guthrie's popularity, even at those times.
I hope GG kept that Gibson ES-335 because his tone is amazing on it. I'm not discounting his signature
Charvel at all, GG can play on anything. What a great find this is.
If I remember well, I may be wrong, I think that Gibson in particular was unfortunately stolen along with other gear during one of their gigs many years ago... But I cannot be 100% certain. I am glad you enjoyed the concert. There are not many videos of Guthrie performing as earliest as in this video. It's practically a historic document!
