Full SAILBOAT TOUR [Affordable 38ft, Self Sufficient, Reliable, Ocean Sailing Monohull]

- WELCOME!!! To this full in-depth tour of my beautiful 1984 Beneteau Idylle 11.5m or 38' long sloop rigged monohull sailboat. My humble home upon the sea.
Three years ago, I went up and down the East coast of the USA looking for a sailboat to buy. With a considerable amount of help and advice from my sailing mentor Don. I purchased this boat in Cape Cod Massachusetts for $23,000.00. At that time the boat was on the hard with it's mast down in an old boatyard miles and miles from the ocean. It was hard to imagine that it would be the boat for me. But after about a month of working with the seller and his broker. We splashed the boat, stepped the mast and sea trialed her. After that, I was confident the sailboat was what I was looking for.
But after several major improvements and upgrades I've made during major refits. The boats value is now far greater than when I started. As is it's practical usability can speaks for itself through the adventures I've had and showcase on my social media pages "Adventureman Dan".
From this boat I love to explore and go on adventures wherever my anchor rests. The boats name perfectly explains what it represents:
-Adventure: (An unusual and exciting or daring experience. Or to engage in daring or risky activity.)
-Borne: (Carried or transported by the thing specified.)
-Adventureborne = "What brings me to the adventure."
This is a humble sailboat. But that is an upside I think. Because unlike most catamarans and other larger vessels. This sailboat is highly affordable and has an extremely low cost to maintain. Allowing me to be able to sail and cruise full time. Without worry of breaking the bank.
On top of that, my main expense out here in the Bahamas would be food. But nearly a decade of spearfishing around the world has given me the capability to consistently harvest food from around my sailboat through freedive spearfishing. Allowing me to further extend my time at sea. While feasting and sharing it's bounties with my fellow sailors.
In the future I plan to make more improvements and upgrades to this boat. Stay tuned to see what comes next!

What do you think about my off grid minimalistic sailboat? What would you add? What would you change?
I love it … self sufficiency… I might add a water maker especially with all that solar.
“Sailing Uma” Channel added a water maker to their boat and I have seen portable one that seem to work well “Sailing Atticus “ Channel
I just did! Love it!
NICE ! I paid for my 40 footer 8K and it's best boat on the planet for me. Almost no interior, no pluming, no engine, nothing to break! No stuff it's lighter so it's going faster :) less stress on rigging. minimalism is negotiable :) Livening on it full time for 3+ years. ua-cam.com/channels/pDQ14k0TTfaVNzuUohUmxg.htmlvideos
Well done Dan!!! Seriously! The upgrades are super practical and well thought out. The only things I might add would be an outdoor BBQ strapped to one one of the stern railings. Briquette is simpler to install, propane simpler to use. Would definitely have to be all stainless, burners, grates etc. They're nice for adding variety to your meals, and can be used on low to smoke fish and double as a way of meat preservation. I personally also have a vacuum packer. They're small, can be easily stored. But when you catch something a little larger you can effectively store much of it for later and not feel compelled to eat the same thing B, L, and D so as not waste food. Super impressed. Keep up the good work.
Dude is living that life... Much respect for taking the plunge man. Enjoy your adventures.
Thanks soo much buddy! Trying hard. 😀

4:52 i can definately feel the breeze coming through that hatch blowing through the screen onto my face.
It's a nice wind!
this guy is one of the most organized sailing youtubers
Thanks buddy. :)

Dan, you have turned a modest classic sailboat into your "palace" & you show that ingenuity & design trump deeper pockets. Have a whale of adventure, cheerio.
Hey thank you soo much. I'd like that think that what I've accomplished as well. :)
This is an amazing sailboat! I've been looking and haven't found one that would be great for just one person, but this is perfect and the price is unreal! I have now been searching for a sailboat that one person can handle on their own, and I have found some beautiful 1984 Beneteau Idylle for great prices, so glad I stumbled on your video!!
Glad you like it!
You've done a great job getting her set up, and I really like how there's a massive cover over the cockpit and the swim platform. Having said that, one is not need to own a massive boat in order to enjoy a life of luxury, and this, my friend, is luxury. Also, your editing station and chair are quite impressive.
Thanks soo much! Just wait until you see all the improvements I've made since this video!
I can appreciate all the hard work and time it takes to make the wood on a boat, look like a basketball court! My hats off to you sir! You have a beauty. Nice work on electricity.
Thank you soo much! Glad you liked it. :)
This video is really inspiring, it's so interesting to see that you can change things in a sailboat to make living more comfortable e.g. the cushions in the cockpit.
It really makes me more motivated to pursue a similar lifestyle. Thank you.
PS: Please disregard the clown picture, I mean this in a genuine way.
Haha, love that P.S. But yes, you can do anything you want to your own boat. That's part of the beauty of it!
man, you did it, you realize your dreams. YOU ARE THE GUY
Awww, thank you soo much. Reading this first thing in the morning here is going to make my day. Thank you.
As a marine technician - wow! Such beautiful work!
Thank you very much!
I felt the breeze coming through that hatch.
One day, I'll get my own boat and explore the world. It's my dream
Go for it! Put in the work and don't stop!
That was our dream too! We started sailing 1 year ago and have already been to 10 countries. Dreams can truly come true when you set your mind to it.
Living on a boat full time is my life dream, and I’m so glad to see that it’s possible!
Glad to know it's inspired you!

Im 58 man. doing it in 4 years. Do it. I wish id saved up 20k when i was young and done it.
It truly is a dream very possible by many! What an inspiration this is... we also live on our boat full time and though it's not a 38, it is still small at only 44 ft long. We just did a tour of ours on our channel as well.
no toaster?
She's beautiful! I am envious and very happy for you. You are realizing a life that most of us can only dream about! Cheers!
Now I have something to think about before I go to sleep. A beautiful sailboat.
Several years ago I owned a Kirie Elite 37 designed by Ron Holland. Watching your video I couldn't help but realize how similar the two boats are in design and layout. Although I never confirmed it, I believe the Kirie was built in the Beneteau factory in France. So much of the interior woodwork is the same as are the hatches and portlights. The engine compartment access is idential; my Kirie had a Yanmar but it wasn't the original engine. The Kirie was shoal draft with a hydraulic centerboard. She sailed like a dream. Although it wasn't for sale, one day an acquaintance asked how much I wanted for it and after hearing my price (the same that I had paid for it ten years earlier), he purchased it. I immediately became serious regarding a 1996 Beneteau 42s7 that was for sale and purchased it. After eleven years I'm still sailing the 42 and love it. Thanks for the tour. By the way, if you search my name here on UA-cam you'll find videos containing the Kirie.
Thank you. I'll look that up.
man your boat is absolutely gorgeous... you're living like a king and the life most men dream of...
Thanks buddy.

The Idylle series is a super underrated classic. Well thought out Frers design, have known owners of the 13.5 and once spent a couple weeks aboard a then-new 51 foot version, which was the biggest of that series. Superior to many boats in the price range.
It's a great boat!
Very similar to the re-fit I did to my Dromor Apollo 39 feet boat.
Just a few choices I made different from you:
1. I went for a new YANMAR engine, since I had recurring problems with the heat exchanger of the Volvo Penta
2. I also sorted all Victron and other electronic regulators of solar and wind energy on one panel in one of the aft cabins. Gives me a better overview if there should be any malfunction.
3. I went for LIFEPO4 batteries, got the cells and built 2x 260 AMP batteries with all the required safety features. Only the starter battery of the engine is still an old technology lead acid battery, but I replaced it with a new one. Charging of both through the alternator of the engine requires a separate VICTRON regulator.
4. I replaced all ropes and lines, but kept the sails since they are in good condition
5. I added a stern anchor, one of these flat 'duck feet' shaped which need little space to keep it in one of the aft boxes
6. I replaced the entire cooling system of the fridge with a more efficient one with electronic regulation. It is one of the biggest energy consumers, so newer technology is worth the expenses
If you ever come to Greece, let me know, would be interesting to see the two boats next to each other!
Wow thats great!
Very nice. 😉 I grew up on my parents boat from 9 to about 26 years old. Loved my boating years. Dad had a 42 foot 1961 Christ Craft power Yacht.
Very cool!
You've got her laid out real nice,...and I love the huge cover over the cockpit, and swim platform. Great video.
Thanks! Yeah it really has come together nicely.
lay out is so important on a boat. We learned that after having moved aboard our 44 ft sailboat in 2022.
I loved this. I am extremely new to sailing but have committed and I'm really excited about it. This video gave me a lot of insight of what to look for when boat shopping, and building my ocean home. I love the efficiency of space and energy.
Thank you soo much. Soo glad it's helped.
Did you end up taking the plunge and buying one? Since finding sailing channels a few months back my motor boat plans have gone totally out the window and I'm actually on a sailing course right now!
@@JoshSmith93 Have you purchased your boat yet? We just posted a tour of our 44 foot sailboat last week. Sailboats are the way to go! Although good, ocean going ones are few and far between.
@@JoshSmith93 Way to go!
4:56 yeah, I can feel the air 😅🌬
Nice! 😀
I must say that I am extremely impressed at the job you have done with the interior.
Thank you 😊
I was tearing up after watching…this is my dream even though I’ve only been sailing about 20 times. My whole being wants all of this with 100% of me. What now?!
I'm so happy to hear that Kelly! It really is a great dream worth chasing. If you can't afford a sailboat just yet, or you want to learn more about the lifestyle. I would really recommend cruising on other people's boats there are plenty of websites and especially Facebook groups just for that. Best of luck!
Beautiful, absolutely amazing. Don’t have to have a huge yacht to live in luxury and this my friend, is luxury. And your editing station and seat is amazing!
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm sitting in the editing station now and still love it!
38 foot is huge. Dude that is a massive boat, and too big too single hand.....well maybe not too big but definately the maxium. In a force 9 it would be a handful.
That is a big, roomy, airy, professionally designed interior with a focus on being pampered. The galley is like omg, beautiful. Swim platform, Very nice.
Only take one exception to the review. I've watched them rebuilt Spear It Animal from the ground up on their channel. You talk about Raf doing the work - Sasha was right there with him every step of the way. That girl knows how to use a wrench!
Confirming that I was able to feel the air being sucked in while sitting at home on my couch, it was amazing
Hahaha, thanks.
@@Adventureman_Dan Could this be the "Winds of Change" ? 🌬🎐
Thank you Adventureman Dan, excellent work, design and focus. Inspiring!
My pleasure! Thanks buddy.
Nice 38 ft Sailboot, praktibel Design, I like that.
Glad you like it!
Great video and how you explain things
I visited that boat in Cap Cod, august 2018. You did an outstanding refit job...I did not feel I had the courage to do something like that. She looks really good, I remember the owners being sad to let it go. Hope to meet you in person next winter if you are still in Bahamas. Salut !
No way, what a small world! I had the help of a mentor to give me some solid advice. The boat was in great shape, just needed a tuning up. Check my Facebook page to see more up to date posts about where I'm at.
@@Adventureman_Dan I did check your Facebook and I know where you are 'hiding' !!! There is a nice blue hole on the island north of you.
Maybeeeee. :)
Must be a dream come true living aboard Adventureborne! Growing up in Florida the water has always been a big part of my life and living aboard my own boat has always been a dream..
It really is! And because of my sailboat I've now lived in Florida for a year at one point and will likely return.
We too lived in Florida. We docked our boat in Coconut Grove and started our circumnavigation 1 year ago aboard our boat. Your dreams can come true. This video is proof! And so is the life we are currently living!
Thanks for the insights into your home! Especially like how your head doubles as a workshop, would love to see it in action in a future video. Now comes the hard part of keeping it clean and organized on a daily basis ;)
Thanks for the idea! Yes keeping it clean can be a struggle. But making this video was a good excuse! :)
Cant wait to live on a boat like this with my best mate. The endless adventures we are gonna have keep me going every day.
Hell yeah buddy! It's an amazing dream to work towards. :)
just about perfect set up. really like the layout with the head tucked on that end and the extra bed. Seeing this helps to wait for the right boat
Glad to hear!
Thank you so much for the tour. I have been researching platforms so I can start the buying search and all though I have looked in to Beneteaus (very used), I have not come across this model, which is now in my top two. As an older military retiree, I need to make this leap soon before the A.G.E. disease gets me ;) Thanks again and keep your sheets full!
If you look online there are a few others out there. And they might still be listed near the price as I bought mine.
@@Adventureman_Dan Surprisingly, there are and pretty good shape too, thank you!
Great tour and wonderful job on fixing up a $23K find!! What was your sailing background that prepared you to sail on your own? What were your initial projects on your boat before launching it?
Good questions! I learned to sail at a yacht club less than a year prior. Check out my podcast videos back a ways on this channel, where I go into more of my adventure history. Not many projects. I changed the anchor out, that was it!
Seriously awesome. Well done, keep it real!
Great boat! Thanks for the tour, some really good ideas here. Stay safe!
Thanks, you too!
Great video, love how clean and organize all is.
Thank you, an organized boat is a safe boat. :)
@@Adventureman_Dan You're so fun, Daniel! "An Organized Boat is a Safe Boat." TRUE True
That's a beautiful boat buddy you should be rightfully proud. Perfectly organised too.
Thanks so much!
The organization is impressive! Though our boat is slightly bigger at 44 ft.... we have had to really think through the organization aspects to keep it neat and tidy and appealing.
Brilliant boat, I love it, although at 63yrs old it will have to be in my next life for this dream.
Don't let anything, especially yourself get in the way of your dreams and goals.
Why not go crew on other boats?
@@Adventureman_Dan Thanks for your encouraging reply. Yes just added to my bucket list.
Thanks Dan. Very enjoyable and educational.
Glad you liked it!
You have spent as much in upgrades as you did the boat. Beautiful job sailor.
Yes, thanks
Very nice setup. Well done!
Thank you!
Very impressive. Lots of people think you need to be rich to live a fantastic and free life. You've exemplified that that is not the case. Kudos.
For sure, well said!
Well done!Great show!Great design and work youve done!
Thanks soo much!
Excellent boat tour, beautifully restored and organized, inspiring indeed, thank you!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you soo much!
You got what I (someday) want! Amazing clear video, insanely cool intro with the drone shots.

Nice boat! Very clean. Impressive how well you keep everything organized.
Thank you!
Beautiful boat! Great job man
Thanks 👍
What a great vessel for all of your adventures, Dan! Really, she's a looker- inside & out. You've done a nice job of keeping her both current & classic at the same time. Not easy, but- tastefully done. Impressed with your 'work shop', engine access (gotta love a 'broken in' Volvo Penta, right?) & 1,000W of solar is a great start cuz I'm guessing that you could use that in 4 hours of laptop, drone & GoPro charging! Hahaha- there's never enough! I hope you are comfortable in heavier weather while out at sea as she is a bit old in the tooth. But, well serviced as we can see! Seriously- Good on Ya!
Hey David thank you so much buddy. I have tried very hard to keep her current and classic glad to hear that has shown through.

Thanks for watching!
Beautiful boat and in beautiful condition. I love the way the electrics are set up. Great stuff
Thank you very much!
yes, I was struck by that interior reveal. nice job bud.
Thanks 👍
The interior reveal struck us too! Stunning and so well done. Though we spend the bulk of our time in the cockpit while on a passage.... many hours are also spent down below in the interior of the boat.... and it truly matters what the look and feel is of a space that you spend so much time in!
This is indeed a beautiful boat. You’ve taken great care and I love your notes to self here n there. Well done!
Thanks soo much! It's certainly home.
@@Adventureman_Dan Uhhhh... Note to self... Start making notes to myself! 😉
There’s a huge difference between innovations and improvements dude
Thanks
You are very inspiring! Thank you!!🫡🇺🇸✌️
Wow, thank you!
Very inspiring. I would love to do this, having crewed on many boats and going offshore. Where I get overwhelmed is thinking about maintenance, upkeep, and running out of money. Any insider tips (or is there already a video)? Things like prescriptions, health insurance type stuff that I’d be leaving behind
My advice is simple, though not for everyone...... just go for it! Don't worry about what could go wrong, and start looking forward to what could go right!
Hope to see you out there buddy.
Man I’d love to own a sailboat with one day. I’ve been living on a M/Y for two years and haven’t regretted it. Although it is more spacious and feels like an RV on the water, I dislike the fact that I’ll be always limited to the amount of gas it consumes which isn’t cheap :(
Thanks buddy. For sure there are pros and cons to every boat.

That filling in of the cockpit to make a bed is a good idea. Especially being under that enormous hardtop solar setup.
Thanks, I love it!
@@Adventureman_Dan i just built similar hardtop from aluminum pipe. But unfortunately could not make nearing as deep. Mine is only 4 feet front front to back. Just curious. What is the size of yours?
Great, straightforward presentation of a very nice boat.
Hey thanks! Glad you liked it.
I'm jealous. In Europe the prices on anything 30ft plus is ridiculous. Especially in the UK. Excellent Beneteau presentation btw.
I can imagine! And thanks!
Ah! Not sure if price are so expensive, checkout boat24, plenty boat at very affordable prices, you may be able to walk to any marine and put the price you like in any boat... Different if you buy here in Australia where prices are extremely expensive!
And the parking costs are obscene in the UK.
Epic video, awesome editing. I live fulltime in a 31ft Moody. My dream is to cross the Atlantic over to the Caribbean. But I'm not sure if the boat is to small for the journey.
Thanks soo much.
Maybe join a flotilla crossing over?
Check out Wind Hippie Sailing! She took her 27’! Sloop down the east coast through Caribbean islands, through the Panama Canal and across the Pacific where she is currently hanging out! Took her around 41 days or so to cross. She’s such an inspiration!
Why would it be too small?
Thanks! I will check out Wind Hippie Sailing. My biggest concern is the bolted fin keel and shallow draft, only 1,5 meters. The majority of smaller boats that cross oceans, 32feet and below seems to have full keels. I guess the right equipment, planning and preparations is the most important part. It looks to me that catching the trade wind when going west over the Atlantic is a fairly safe voyage. The return route back to Europe in the Northern Atlantic seems more unstable due to more unpredictable and heavy weather.
@@manuelkirstetter2482 Tankage, galley space, food storage, deck space for solar/wind turbine, battery bank, 1-2 people's stuff. 31' is pretty small. 34-36' is practical minimum, 38-42' is the sweet spot.
Brilliant setup dude.
Dan, you have a great boat! Very nice!
Thank you!
Cannot believe you've purchased this beauty for $23K. I could only dream about in Croatia. Such a great catch. Enjoy!
Thank you so much the boat has really turned out nice. Though I will admit I bought it for 23KI have done quite a bit to it. But I am very happy with it.
Absolutely beautiful boat hopefully, one day I will buy my own cell phone and set it up to see and see the beautiful oceans. I’m just scared of running into a thunderstorm, but God bless.
You have done an incredibly fantastic job with all your upgrades! I have watched this one many times! And I enjoy all your insights you continually share, as well as your voyages. You're inspirational and I look forward to meeting you. I'm currently in Port St Lucie, FL on land, In the visionary process currently, I look forward to being back in a more peaceful environment, away from too many people, and sailing on adventures starting from the Treasure Coast and going (back to) the Bahamas and Caribbean. Keith from Sailing Zatara is a wealth of incredible info as well, and I'm in touch with him as I'm in the stages of getting out of the "Rat Race" as soon as possible, yet knowing that refits and upgrades take time, and so many other important things to always KNOW about sailing. Daniel, I'd love to have you as one of my advisors as well. From vision to reality, it will take some time, but it will be so worth it when I 'm finally at the point of SAILING! Thank you, @Adventureman_Dan !!!
Cheers buddy! Get after it! :)
that is a nice boat and at a good price. where did you get the frame setup done for the solar? that's what i'd like to get done.
Thanks. It was custom made.
Wow! Awesome boat. Great customizations. I'm wondering how you made the solar panel array waterproof enough to act as a bimini.
Just bolted them together with weather sealing between.
nice neat looking boat , nicely equipped too , looks like freedom to me , cheers thanks for sharing this
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful boat Dan!
Thanks!
Awesome tour and editing. You are living the dream Dan. Do you ever have problems with it getting too hot or stuffy when you’re living at anchor? How do you deal with this?
Thanks soo much buddy! No I just keep the hatches open and it lets in more than enough wind. I think also never being in AC has made me much more used to the hotter temperatures. But it's perfect right now!
can always add an air conditioner
Thanks for the great tour. I’m curious, if you ended up needing a major repair on that engine, would you consider electric given that large solar array you have?
Absolutely! But only if and when this engine needs to go.
Hey that's an efficient setup! What a great model for packing in all ya need and still a very enjoyable, seaworthy boat. Enjoy!
It sure is!
Beautiful, it's the same stuff that dreams are made of.... I wish... Beautiful boat!!! Fair Winds Captain...
Indeed it is. Thank you 😊
We cruised on our 43 ft sailboat for 9 years. I often wonder why no one talks about the costly upkeep of owning and operating full size live aboard vessel whether it’s power or sail. The boats don’t fix themselves and unless your accustom to repair and replace Diesel engines, macerator pumps, water systems, you’ll be paying big bucks to a marine mechanic or technician. Slip rates, electricity, water are costly. Size of vessel is restricted for living on board. Not to mention ratio % in marina plus extra live on board fees, 200.00 to 300.00 on top of slip rate. It not cheap. You could live on the hook and that’s a whole story in itself.
For sure life at anchor is where it's at!
Marinas are to be avoided, think of them as reefs.
Extremaly well organized space...really amazing!
Glad you like it!
Yes, every inch of your boat is used for something...i am refitting an old sailboat from the 70s, and there is a ton of waisted space.. I hope to reach your degree of perfecton! i am planning to start a big adventure with the family , leave my job and sail down to carhibean ...
Thanks for this... the cockpit bed is a great idea! As is the toilet work bench...
Glad it was helpful!
Good job dude! It's a dream of mine to do it! Good for you. The boat looks great
