Black CEO says he was shocked by credit union's controversial decision

- The largest credit union in the US has the widest disparity in mortgage approval rates between White and Black borrowers of any major lender, a trend that reached new heights last year. CNN's Rene Marsh reports. #CNN #News
When I lived in Cincinnati, one of my black colleagues who was a Plant Manager at the time was denied a mortgage. He ended up writing a check for the house. Can you imagine turning down a buyer who had enough cash to buy the house outright? This is a widespread problem and is an example of structural racism.
But...but Tim Scott says that's not so. It's all good in the neighborhood! 🙄
You mean Mr Ed, when referring to Tim Scott! He must of forgotten they hate the people that look like him! 😂😂😂
Being able to write a check doesn't mean that much. Debt obligations matter. I can have $500,000 in my checking account, but owe $1,000,000 on my mortgage and another $1m in divorce settlement, another $1m in backpay to my employees, another $1m in back taxes, etc.
People don't seem to grasp that the thing that gets you a loan is proven ability to repay it, not what you have sitting around, unless you're signing it over as collateral.
Lol, so credit means nothing to you?
@@leok7193while what you said is true I was turned down for a small loan for my business recently. My credit is close to 800 and i made over $400,000 this year. The loan was for 20,000 and my debt is under $20,000. One credit union said no and all the other banks said yes. I decided to pay cash.

@mike60521x how much do you know about ppl's personal experiences? Especially someone like me, a highly paid nurse with excellent credit and barely owing anyone anything?
I had the same issue this fall. I was approved by navy federal (I have a letter) then once I found the home they denied me. Good thing I didn’t pay Ernest. I make over $90k from salary not to mention passive income from two rental properties. At the time I applied my credit score was around 790 (it’s 826 now). I had $80k in liquid cash. They pulled their approval because of my “debt to income”. I have two mortgages on my rental properties and make $4600 in revenue from them monthly. I still bank with them, but I’m leaving. I already closed my business accounts, my second checking account and my money market. I’ll be gone within the next few weeks once I decide on a good bank.
Stay away from Wells Fargo, BOA, Truist and Chase. PenFed is a great option, been really good to me. 👍🏾
Hard to find a good bank as a black person. .
Take your business somewhere else where you will be treated like a valued customer! Don't stay with them!
@@YasukeNakamoto Support Black Banks. Google the list
You have two rental properties? Are they paid off? If not then that's why they denied you
Just remember folks: companies like this will quickly lend to black applicants for cars, vacations and the like. Try getting a small loan to expand your small business and it’s a different story.
You hit the nail on the head,💯💯💯 on that!
Because a house costs 400k and all those other things are less than 50k. Maybe it’s because the white applicants have a stronger credit history and less debt. These are products of being black in society that was racist. Whites are trying to even the playing field and open up more opportunities but only to the blacks who want it (even then they are still met with racism sometimes). Once blacks establish themselves better financially in society then the disparity of credit applications should even out. Until then common sense says “hey, if blacks were held back for 150 years then I’m sure they aren’t going to be approved for loans as much as whites” it’s not on the banks though to take that risk, it’s on blacks to prove they are worth that risk. Just like it’s on whites (and everyone else) to prove we are worth that risk
It's all by design.
Remember the time where they stated blacks don't make the same money as whites due to higher education attainment?
Fast forward to today and even with higher educational attainment, a white with only a high school diploma will do equally or better than a blk with college degree.
They will cite all kinds of reasons: well it's because of this; no because of that, etc.
Truth is as long as they remain the gatekeepers to success 🙌, blacks in general will continue to be at the bottom by design no matter what we do.
😳
I've never seen so many victim complexes in my life. Improve your credit score and debt to income ratio and you'll be approved! Nowhere on these applications are a box where you have to check your race! If a white person with the same info came in and wanted a loan he'd be denied too
Why vacations? I could even see a car because that's an asset that can be repossessed. But why vacations?
52% Disapproval is NOT an accident.
It's a design.
Naw it's accident
Its the american way, please remember they never apologize for slavery
You are correct. It's not an accident. It's because Black people have lower credit scores. It's that simple.
@@garagedoorrus who the fuck are we supposed to apologize to? And don't you think the black African tribal chiefs who sold Black people into slavery should apologize first?
This story is true. Navy Federal Rejected my mortgage application. My credit score was 804. It was so sad. Thank God I got my mortgage application approved from a different lender. Navy Federal should be investigated for other potential applicants
Nonsense. You were asking for a mortgage on a house you could not afford.
Are you guessing? You know this how?@FreshLounger
They actually finished this investigations and found race was not a factor in any of the application. There are numerous considerations when taking out a loan such as income per year, Debt, Credit history ect. I have Navy federal and was rejected numerous times. My credit score was 800 like yours but I did not have enough credit history so I started using a credit card and paid it off in full each month. Two years later I was finally approved for a loan. When I was in the military I would see people all the time waste money on fancy jewelry, cars, ect than they would complain why they got rejected because they had a lot of debt or had no credit history...Some people in the military also live way above their means and if you look at the officers they are mostly white and officers make the most money so it kind of makes sense why there is a huge gap in the approval rating between whites and blacks. People need to stop playing the victim card and take control of their financial situation.

Here's the thing. Most credit unions and banks have actual human beings that work for them. These people at some level have the ability to manipulate things at their leisure, as well as see a particular name or kind of name and deny, approve, sign off on, Google and look for a face or picture on a Facebook or Instagram account and do so as they please. People are working together. We shouldn't be surprised. And I don't wanna hear nothing about a credit score or debt. Let's stop playing games and gaslighting. We all know what time it is.

*They have reliably the **_WORST_** credit of any group there is - not surprised.*
I think the 48% approval rate is still way too high! Don't let them outrage you! The truth is at least 85% of blacks should be denied, they have no staying power for their income, they are lazy, have no motivation and they are all involve in criminal activity!
@@j.r.8592 this happens to self employed borrowers all the time because they think they make 200k a year but on paper they write everything off and claim no income to avoid taxes LOL
The mere mention of discrimination with this particular bank has turned my head from them completely. My daughter is in the national guard which would give me opportunity to open an account. I now no longer want that access. Thank You Navy Federal for showing me your true colors.🤨
Hint, hint. They don't want you there either. You are doing exactly what they want you to do. Go away.
@@ButcherBird-FW190DYour statement proves you’re not intelligent. Because everybody welcomes money
Not just mortgage approval rates, credit card approvals too and credit line increases after never missing a payment over a year
Class action lawsuit has been filed.... the details so far are rather disturbing if true. Navy Federal should probably hire a very good attorney.
Thats crazy. I got navy federal when i joined the navy. After i got out i continued to use them and started a career in govtech/IT. I was making over 130k with only 8k of debt, and a 740ish credit score and they denied my loan request. I was surprised really, so the second company i got in touch with to get a loan was more than happy to get me my approval and everything. They took my bank statements and info and was telling me I am golden, so i was confused by why navy federal rejected me especially being a long term member and having a car loan under them, thats never been late.
You Black?
Why do you think 740 makeyou qualified? It also depends on downpayment.
@ussreeves24 yall will say anything to justify your bullshit. 740 is more than qualified. You can get a mortgage with 100 points less. Also, a VA lonan has no down-payment.
Despite the stats documented on paper an before the eyes, there will still be those who will conclude race was not the primary factor. It is so ridiculous until it is laughable. U just have to grin and smile at how we can land on different ground with the exact set of truths.
Pulling out all of my money & taking my business elsewhere. I’ve been having issues with this bank but this is the cherry on top for me. And to say that Black Americans aren’t owed reparations for slavery and continued transgressions post slavery is insanity.
I just opened an account
Who are kidding? I bet you don't have a dime to your name and don't even know what a bank account is. AND yes your not owed reparations or a dam thing! Leave if you don't like it here. I will pay your ticket and Sudan looks great!

@@punchthem4582 Bet you don't have enough dimes to buy a ticket to SUDAN.
Great job Navy Federal, I will be closing my account with your institution tomorrow. Mostly because of them not accepting accountability for their actions.
They will be investigated by the federal government. This is just beginning. He should also file a suit against them.
You'll never prove it was racism because it wasn't racism. There's no evidence that it was racism.

Welp, looks like I want be doing business with Navy Federal! Thanks for this story.
When we say it's INSTITUTIONAL this is what we mean.
I worked for a financial services company many years ago, and saw the disparities in Black and white. It was very blatant
"It's something that's going to affect the generation all the way down to their kids." So true! I hope Geico is looked into as well.
Whites AmeriKKKa,
Oh yeah...GEICO. I remembered GEICO having a practice during the 1970s of steering Black prospects to its Crittenden Insurance subsidiary (I don't think this company exists now), which focused on insuring higher-risk drivers.
Oh wow, I never knew about Geico!
Glad you exposed this, it's just wrong in so many ways!

This is nothing new. I hear about these types of stores almost every other year. People also report on the discrimination when getting their home appraised. Nothing ever changes.
I'm closing both my personal and business account, I've experience this myself and could never understand why. Few of my associates are taking their banking somewhere else also.
if you can prove it was racism you could make a lot of money
I'm still trying to figure out why any veteran or any person of color is shocked or surprised this has been going on for years when we were looking for a home we were only shown houses that we were told were good for us . We had some friends apply with a lower credit score and where approved
My circumstances were the same; 6 figure income, preapproval letter, $83k downpayment, 730+ credit and two days before closing, they pulled the plug! Absolutely insane and didn’t think much of it because Agent didn’t think it unusual, but he was a minority too (so what did he not know)! Yeah……😡🤬 still got the house, but……
Sounds like class action lawsuits plus navy will cut ppl limits once lawsuits start going dwn

You had to be given a reason why they turned you down. What was it?
& it's always strange when there are sudden "concerns" at the middle and end of closings
I had the same thing happen to me earlier this year with Navy Federal. I have banked with them for close to 15 years. They were willing to give me all kinds of credit facilities, with a credit score of over 720. But when it came to getting a mortgage, they said, NOPE.
They told me the reason for my denial was ‘ That after my monthly obligations, I’ll only have $5,000 left.
It's about time, someone investigated it! As a vet myself it angers me so much!. Navy credit unit denied me as well.
I would've never thought discrimination would happen at a place that helps veterans and active duty members
Navy Federal is not affiliated with the US Navy or any military institution. But it does have agreements that allows them to operate on military installations. Given the DoD's longstanding policies on discrimination with respect to contractors and vendors, I am surprised that complaints haven't been filed with the Inspector General.
I bet you dont think the usa is a racist country.

The question of weather this happens is never in question the question is what is the recourse for these banks and credit unions when they get caught? There needs to be a severe punishment or it will continue to happen in perpetuity
Navy Federal is the most honest and transparent financial institution that I dealt with. Tbh, their customer service is superb. CNN left many facts out (such as the fact that many of Navy Federal members are young armed forces personnel - or veterans - with limited income, high debt, and low credit scores).

was denied by NFCU too after getting a pre-approval letter
At the time in 2020 when I was purchasing my first home, I applied for a conventional loan for a $400k home in Decatur. I’ve been with the credit union since 2001 when I joined the Navy. At the time I was working my second year as an emergency physician with a credit score north of 750 and they declined me lol. I thought it was going to be a given. Had to get my loan from Ameris. I tired again to refinance said house during those exceedingly low rates and they pulled some BS at the tail end and I lost the rate. I’ve since mostly divested from them except for some instruments because of the credit history.
This redlining has been a problem forever. This is by design. If people have a fair chance at building wealth, what kind of society will we have?
Some people would be frightened to see improved credit scores and wealth within communities that should be frequenting their check caching establishments.
I just wanna say that being a former mortgage processor and underwriter and originator that I would never suggest that anyone apply for a mortgage on a home using a bank and using a conventional loan, you should always try to do an FHA loan. It is easier and less of a down payment if any and veterans or people from the military should always try to use their VA benefits, your more likely regardless of your color to get approved your DD 214 is a great way to start. It is part of that and then after that if need to and you want to release your VA Cert. refinance your home to release the benefits. what is that thing called? A lot of red lining happens undercover but if you never question it and you go by what that Underwriter claims the reason is and you don’t challenge appeal or report what you view as racial discriminatory act then that make it harder for the next generation or the person behind you. good luck to those who are trying to get a home, in this high interest rate. Please remember do not go to a bank go to a mortgage company it must say mortgage company not bank.
Thank you for bringing this to light.
I was just thinking about opening a Navy Federal Credit Union account. I would rather continue to be discriminated against and exploited by major banks.
This sent me. 😂
NF is good for waiving overdraft fees and reimbursing atm fees automatically. But far as a home or personal loan they still Jim Crow.

@nigelmcgiver2275This man is a CEO .
@nigelmcgiver2275 did you pay attention to the story? People with good credit, good sources of income and good down payments are being rejected by Navy Federal. These same individuals applied at other banks/credit unions and got a loan.
Love how they respond with a cookie cutter response. No surprise that another bank approved him. He had all the right criteria.
it all means nothing when they dont even look at the credit score
its pretty simple the other bank had riskier lending standards
This got me in my feelings seriously 😒

I went through the same thing, my wife and I each had 780 credit score, we had low dti, and more. We applied to Navy Federal and was denied... They explained they have another standard for scoring than other institutions and thats why there were differences. Well tell me how I was approved the very next month for a 800k home at 2.75%... our income was over 200k at the time, just wild....
I didnt understand how then and this might point to a reason why... Im happy with my current loan, still a customer of Navy because I still have my credit cards with them (8%, hard to beat) but still... This all just sucks.
Thr man had $100,000 to put down and still was rejected?????? Wow!!!!
When you get close to catching up, the finish line gets moved.
Exactly
The bank asked to see my check stubs not once not twice but 3 times when I was buying my first house. My mother buys property for a living and she said thats un herd of. That they were probably trying to find a reason to deny me since my credit score and history was nearly perfect.
Same here!
I often saw white individuals closing on homes much younger than my black friends even though the black friends had stable careers and were much older (like 10 years). Many stated they had been denied loans and were stuck renting at prices that were higher than paying for a mortgage!! It’s crazy!!!
DAMMIT NAVY FEDERAL!!! There has to be a class action lawsuit coming.
The hill I've been dying on is that redlining has never gone away. Its been moved around and new terms have been created to give the appearance that banks are not discriminating against customers by race. The ladt time a bank was convicted of redlining and racial discrimination in lending was in 2002. It was BOA and the regulations were changed afterwards to ensure no bank gets convicted of it again. This is also why old latino, black and asian neighborhoods are being gentrified. The people that have always lived there cant get a loan to stay there but the other people can.
You know, it’s funny if anybody should’ve been approved for a mortgage, it should’ve been this guy. He had all those ducks in the row with the income to prove it the down payment to prove it. Not to mention he’s a CEO of a company I don’t get it.
He had too much debt for NFCU everyone is acting like its a mystery.
They listed the reason why he found another lender and that was ok with his debt thats ok.

@@serenitynow7854 not even his debt. He’s self employed. Probably writes off everything and claims not as much income as he stated to get pre approved. Every self employed borrower does it. “ oh I make 500k a year” but on paper you make 100k because you avoid taxes by writing everything off lol
@@serenitynow7854 What you're missing, pretty easily, is that ANOTHER lender approved this applicant almost immediately. Why? Is the "approval algorithm" that different between the top mortgage lenders? It shouldn't be, if the prevailing criteria is having the borrower pay back the loan, on time. CNN's analysis stated that Black applicants to Navy Federal were more than twice as likely to be denied as White applicants even when MORE than a dozen different variables - including income, debt-to-income ratio, property value, downpayment percentage, and neighborhood characteristics - were the same. Yep...you can miss it pretty easily...
@@kenc2257 yet they didn't include credit score... Kinda the most important part of a mortgage application. It could be a number of things algorithm maybe it's the military the other top 50 lenders are banks so don't have to help a specific group of customers. Maybe the credit score criteria is very high so it creates that gap. I don't think it is an evil mustache twirler saying black application deny it.
