There was a reason why MLK was killed during his Poor People's Campaign and not during his Civil Rights Campaign. The powers that be could tolerate social progress for black Americans, but not economic progress. The Tulsa race massacre was proof that government officials were not only complacent in this economic oppression, but literally participated in it themselves. It has been 159 years since emancipation but the black-white wealth gap has not closed. In fact, it has only grown wider in the last 60 years. This is what people are referring to when they say 'systemic racism.' True racial equality cannot be achieved without economic equality. That's why MLK shifted his focus to economic rights in the late 60's. But this video is evidence that progress has not been made.
When selling our first home, my (White) agent told me to remove all family photos. I asked, why? She looked at me and said: “There’s a lot of racist buyers out there” I wasn’t angry, I actually appreciated her honesty. Also, my town wasn’t very inviting. My house sold with one showing, multiple offers. I can definitely relate. Sad, but true.
Anyone who is a good realtor will tell clients to remove photos and sentimental items. The buy has to see it as a place they would live, and not a place already occupied by someone else.
@SnowLeopardForever The point is irregardless of the cosmetic, philosophical, religious, or ethical reasons a person wouldn't buy a house, removing all personal items is a must to sell at market value.
When buying a house, a buyer does not want to see the current owner's mementos, pictures, or interest in the house. I would think they would want to visualize themselves in that home. Seeing other people's stuff would not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling if I saw that "lived-in" look. Other people's " interest" or what they think is interesting does not appeal to everyone. So I would think always make your home " basic" when selling.

My next neighbor asked if we could help her get a quote for a new roof because roofing companies were quoting high prices. Once we did we could see that the prices these companies were quoting her and her husband were out of the world in Florida. We were not only shocked but insisted if they needed our help for any other quotes to let us know so we could help get them a lower price. This is completely unfair treatment by these companies.
Michelle, I agree.👍Just like any business, we want them to be honorable in their dealings and it can be done. We must report this kind of dealings and they must be punish. Unfortunately, this has been happening for decades and finally, this information is being reported by mainstream media. Ultimately, we will get rid of companies that allow this type of behavior and replaced them with reputable companies. Stay tune.😊
It's kind of their fault if they did their research like they said they should of gotten a realtor to give an appraisal as they make a commission so they naturally want the highest price for your house, and its free. And they waited a week for the price of the appraisal, every realtor I know give's you an appraisal price the same day, they do a walkthrough and compare to comparable/recently sold houses in your area of the same stature.
@@thatguy5801, real estate agents conducts what’s called a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA), in fairness, customers can go to websites, such as Zillow or Redfin to get an idea of their property value….however, it’s quite different, when you’re doing a refinance. In order to get equity from your home, it requires an in-depth analysis, which requires a professional (Appraiser) to investigate and ultimately, give their personal opinion of what the customer’s home is worth, you do not need a real estate agent. Here’s where the problem lies, when you give this kind of power to someone(Appraiser), who allows his/her own prejudice to override their duties and responsibility to present a fair analysis, it creates problems for the homeowner. My friend, to blame the victim (homeowner) because someone refuses to conduct themselves in a professional and honorable manner is unacceptable.

My husband and I owned a Real Estate Appraisal company and we worked in the appraisal industry for 16 years in a very hot market. I also worked as a Realtor for a few years and this segment left so many questions unanswered. 1) Is it possible you had a very lazy and inept appraiser the first time? 2) You mentioned that you couldn’t wait to put the pictures back up - are you aware that Realtors have been asking sellers to pack up ALL PERSONAL PICTURES and ANY items which personalize your home too much? The idea is that the buyer needs to picture THEMSELVES in the home vs feeling like they’re viewing someone else’s house. (if it’s too personalized). I realize this produced interview may not have captured all of the facts and it is possible the original appraiser DID have prejudice in his heart. But if that IS the case, he is guilty all by himself. The ugliness in his heart doesn’t infect everyone - he isn’t a system. He is an individual appraiser. I am an immigrant with brown skin. My family moved from Cuba to a white, homogeneous city in Washington State…in the late 60s. We moved to Miami, FL in the 70s (for the weather) and lived in a white, homogeneous neighborhood with white homogeneous schools until High School. And I never ever felt racism until I entered High School…but I encountered the “go back where you came from” from black individuals. My mother and father -in-law were executed by 3 black men in 1984. In the trials, they were guilty…but we felt compassion for their entire extended, black families. My mom was physically assaulted in her car while stopped at a light. After hurricane Andrew. Insurance companies were paying out threw a couple of banks in one particular area and I guess the word got out. The large, muscular man reached in to her open car window to grab her purse. But her physical body was in his way and he pummeled my 5’3” mom. She was in the hospital for weeks, lost 50,000 cash that she had to pay as a deposit for her contractor and lost her contractor and almost lost her house. The assailant was black - he was never caught. My husband was a process server and was held at gunpoint (gun on his forehead) for over an hour while he was just posting 3day notices in the neighborhood. This was in the time when tourists were being killed in broad daylight in Miami. The assailants robbed him and threatened to kill him and somehow, God let him escape that alive. They were black. Every single criminal impacting our family, directly was black. They were individuals. Imagine if I raised my family with “minority education”? Instead, We are a multicultural family. We marry individuals and love EVERY skin color on this planet. James 3:17 teaches us that we can feel confident of owning insight about others that isn’t true. It doesn’t come from God. Individuals aren’t systems.
They should of contacted a realtor for their free appraisal, its their fault. Realtors want the highest value for your house as they are paid a commission and it wouldn't take one week to find out the price, usually its within an hour or same day, a simple walkthrough and looking at comparables (recently sold houses in your vicinity of the same stature).

The realtor told her, straight out the gate, to remove any ethnic art, etc. The realtor, who was white, said she was sorry, but the reality is if buyers know the seller is black, they either won't buy it or they will try to low brow the offer. This is real and it is going on in this day and age. SMH Kudos to this couple for exposing this. I hope it brings about real change in the housing industry.

@@Charlie-xj5jm But that's not a solution. We should be able to get an appraisal without worrying about our skin color affecting the results. I shouldn't have to go see one of my white friends or have to remove my family pictures or any indication of my blackness from my home to get a fair market value for my house. What you describe above isn't a simple solution. It's pure discrimination. It's 2022, some people should learn to just evolve!
I hope this doesn't come out wrong... but sometimes the wrong things happen to the right people. This power couple knew how to prove and expose this discrimination. Their credentials will help them get heard more. They are bringing awareness which will hopefully bring change. I pray her new treatments bring her health back.
The only problem is that they had to both be doctors, him a professor (I believe) who teaches civil rights and historical housing discrimination in America, to be aware of what happened to them. I worked in real estate for years and in the valuations of homes. Comps make or break any estimate. This clown used comps outside of their wealthy neighborhood and the one be used within was a complete "fixer upper" and had no resemblance to their property. 95% of valuations agents are white. There is overt and inherent biases cooked into the real estate market. Insurance is determined by your zip code. Same house, same builder, same bricks, etc. but a home in a black neighborhood is usually 30% lower valued than the exact same home in a gentrification neighborhood.
I've been a victim of that as well. I refinanced 3 homes over the past 2 years, and they were all appraised under market value. I had to confront the appraiser for his discriminatory treatment on my most recent home. It's upsetting to realize that regardless of how accomplished one can be in today's society, the skin color will often be the single factor to be judged by.
The root of racism is economic keep-away. Knowing this-and seeing recent examples of other families that experienced the same thing this family experienced-I recently told my wife to whitewash our home when we refinanced in North Carolina earlier this year. We basically removed all pics and reference of us away from our walls, and my wife got a colleague (a white woman) to babysit the house while we were gone that day. Our appraisal was $10,000-$20,000 more than expected…so the “white washing” of our place worked (unfortunately). Implicit bias will destroy us if we don’t have systems in place to correct it. First, Black possessions are implicitly valued lower. That’s the root issue. Second, there aren’t many Black appraisers. And third, if you ever read an appraisal report, you’ll find their values are mostly “subjective”…outside of looking at comps. This leaves room for economic discrimination to be made by an appraiser. Until things change, “white washing” a home for appraisal might be the best bet. Because you should NEVER lose thousands of dollars from your home’s value simply due to your skin color.
Nobody should have to play childish games w/a racist system that makes $1.6 trillion yearly from the community's spending power, plus billions in taxes ($200 billion) and from black owned businesses ($300 billion). This is what we should teach kids? Enrich a System that slaps you in the face and not hold our own politicians and civil rights organizations accountable for turning the other cheek? I'm understanding the issue and get it, but I'm not having white friends save me.

This had nothing to do with discrimination, let me back up my claim. First of all, when your house lease ends or you’ve paid off your house and looking to get an appraisal, you have a lower appraisal price point. But over time, the value goes up, like the couple said, the two different appraisals were 2 years apart. Meaning the house became more expensive due to maybe increasing population in the area etc.

Some people who are part of the majority have a strong sense of entitlement and are angered when those in the minority have achieved alot more success then they have.

Discrimination is very hard to prove. That's why it's so insidious. She's a dumb realtor and I know better. THAT'S the step you take. The white guy across the street from me years ago listed his house with an agent for under a hundred thousand less than I told him to list it for. He thought the agent knew better. And he sold it right away. And I sold mine for two hundred thousand more than his, right after he left. We are all white. His house was bigger and had more bathrooms and a brand new roof.

As a loan officer you should know that appraisals varying a lot by different appraisers isn’t uncommon at all. Unless you get a large number of appraisals on the same home and compare; you don’t know if ràce has anything to do with it. It could easily be the first appriser tends to low ball all his appraisals and the second person doesn’t. I’ve had this happen to me too and my skín color didn’t change. The first guy pulled all the lowest price fixer upper homes in my area and only used those as comps to value my home (my home isn’t a fixer upper, so this wasn’t a fair valuation and low balled my numbers by a lot). The next person didn’t do that and I got a much stronger and fair valuation. Also, the comps are all there in the report, as a home owner you should look to see the homes they used to come up with a value and dispute any you do not agree with.
@@GhostSal I'm aware of that but as someone who's LGBTQ and a person of color I would believe it's more important still for people in minority categories to get a 2nd opinion as there is a lot of bias in the industry.

I’ve also seen this happen all the time, where ràce wasn’t a factor at all, just a lowball first appraiser.
@@GhostSal both situations can happen and in most cases appraisals are fine but in the last 20 years and recently their have been high profile cases taken to court and it has judged to have been racism. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen more than people think.
@@chrisaycock5965 I want to add, yes there can be rácist individuals, my point is wildly different appraisals isn’t uncommon and rácism shouldn’t be automatically assumed. I’ve also experienced rácísm from all other tàces too but that doesn’t mean I assume ràcism because I’ve experienced it from this or that ràce (after all people are individuals and not all the same). As far as going to court, in general I don’t trust the outcome in those types of court cases at all, way too much bias and personal predetermined beliefs in that system. How could they possibly know if something was ràcíst in those cases? They have to get a large number of appraisals to build any type of statistical analysis (hundreds of comps to compare, on the same home). Other than someone admitting they’re a ràcíst, the only thing they could prove is incompetence.

Blacks are the originals. The hatred from some white people is insane! Most white people only fight the black race. I have never understand that.. why are the focus on blacks? What are they afraid of?

It happened to me too. I live in Finland, am Nigerian and married to a Finnish man. When we bought our first home, it was sold fast within 3 days by an indian with my pictures on the wall. After living in our New home for 6 years, we decided to sell because My family is expanding. We tried selling for 2 years wondering why not sold fast, good location and all, potential buyers coming alot. If we final find anyone who is willing to buy, they bring down the value of the house so bad. So I thought to myself, what is really going on until I figured out that I have to remove pictures of me in the house. My husband thought it was silly of me to do that then I told him ”watch now it will sell fast”. That same day I removed the pictures we had good offer and we sold it fast. Its sad for blacks to feel that the value of our property is not valueable enough.
Amazing couple and parents. She is a strong Woman. I hope she comes through on her health and that they win the lawsuit. Disgraceful what they are going through 😤
I really hate this. These are obviously very decent upstanding people. I hope that these appraisal companies are prosecuted to the fullest! Prayers for you and you and your family dear ❤️ Lady.
Sounds like they had a accurate appraisal, then wanted someone to give a inflated appraisal which in turn caused them to pay higher interest rate🙃. No evidence the company was racist or anything along those lines, but there is lots of evidence the couple are racists.
What does that have to do with the topic? Because they are black and you are white and you hate the attention they got so you decide to make up a story about the “passing” of your wife. #FOH
This happens to me pretty regularly in Montréal, Canada. The most recent incident for me was when I got approved for an apartment I wanted. The owner checked my credit score, then my employment etc, approved me in less than 48hours. Then we set a date for me to go sign the contract, checkout the space in person and set a moving date, (I did online tour and application). So anyway, the guy’s friendliness dried up as soon as he opened the door. He had been so gracious the entire process online and on the phone. He barely wanted to show me the space, and he tried to offer me the freaking attic room to rent! I told him I’m here to sign the lease for the original space online. He told me some BS and set a different date to sign the papers. When I called later to follow up, my number was blocked. I couldn’t reach him. I sent a message on the posting (it was still up) and no response. Discrimination is rampant in Canada too. This came from a fellow POC, he was Asian, I’m black.
Fellow POC? You mean non-white. Ive never met a person of Asian background in Canada who considers themselves a POC. Im sure the vast majority of them would want nothing of the sort. What happened to you is not fair but it should serve as a wakeup call that ALL races discriminate and that all people can be racist, not only white people.
The look on the husband's face at the 7:50 mark shows how impacted he is by his wife's statement about wanting to stick around for a lot longer (made me a bit teary hearing her describe her illness). And to boot, they have to be dealing with all this BS with the structural racism in real estate. Ugh! I hope she recovers, and that they are able to sue the hell out of them.
These two nice people each have PhD’s! I’m so disappointed that we are still not dealing with everyone equally. We all need to do better. This isn’t acceptable. I’m sorry that they had to have a colleague show their home to get the true value of their BEAUTIFUL HOUSE. I mean, it is stunning! To get the first appraisal back at such a lowball figure is disgusting. She’s dealing with health issues and does not need this type of discrimination. She needs love, positivity and obviously MONEY as insurance companies tend to deny trials. I’m glad that they brought this out and named names! Call out the racists so we know who not to give our business to. Be well, doctors.

I know I’ll never know exactly how they and others felt being treated like that but it still breaks my heart and pisses me off to no end that they had to go through that. I just don’t understand how someone can hate someone so much that they don’t know. I hope the person and company are held responsible for what they did. I also commend this couple for speaking out as that takes a lot of courage to do so.
Appraisers are independent from the mortgage company. The appraisers are responsible for their actions. The mortgage companies are responsible for their actions. Yes, it it is a shame however; some people have no shame!
This is also done in reverse as a way of getting people out of their homes. For years, my mom’s home had been valued at a certain amount. Then, out of nowhere, her home’s value was decreased by half. Coincidentally, she began receiving near daily calls and offers about purchasing her home from various real estate companies. My mom lives in a nice, quiet, established, working middle class, culturally diverse, predominantly minority neighborhood. Speaking with her neighbors we realized the same thing had happened to them as well with the sudden devaluation and subsequent calls to purchase. We contested the appraisal and requested that the tax assessor reappraise. The telling part was a statement made by the tax assessor as he was conducting the reappraisal, “Well, you know the higher the value, the larger your tax bill will be. So, if you ever decide to sell let me know.” My sister thought this was odd and did some research to find out this “county” tax assessor also has a real estate business. Tell me how that’s not a conflict of interest, but as we found out, there are a lot of county tax accessors who are either also real estate brokers on the side or connected to real estate brokers. At the same time, the tax assessor used this as an opportunity to reappraise other homes in the neighborhood. Two weeks later the new appraised value on my mom’s home was 2 times the original evaluation, doubling her tax bill. Paying the new tax bill is not a concern for us, but several of our neighbors who are on fixed incomes have said this has made them consider selling. My sister did some more digging and found out that my mom’s hometown is viewed as an “up and coming real estate market” as both Apple and Amazon are slated to build corporate offices in the next few years within a 45 minute drive. Devalue to try and get people to sale cheap. If not, overvalue so people cannot afford the taxes and fall into foreclosure or having a lien placed on the property. Either way it’s a systematic process to defraud people of their homes.
Wow!! This should be shared everywhere. Thank you, and yes those people are a sneaky and absolutely trying to defraud people out of their homes. God protect us.

Idk about not experiencing pain the same way being as though Black people are humans lol. But Black children are most definitely looked at and treated older than their counterparts. Especially during or after puberty.
@@LaSombraa A study found that (mostly Caucasian) people view young black girls as older than they are. Both in physical appearance and sexual aptitude. It causes an unconscious bias that (the study argued) makes caucasian people less sympathetic toward young black girls. So, for example, they are more likely to be victim blamed in the case of rape or given harsher punishments at a school because they're expected to be more mature than they actually are. It's called the "adultification" of black girls. The "don't experience pain" thing is another study of (IIRC) medical students that found that there were medical biases among medical students/doctors where some believed that black people had thicker skin and thus felt less pain. ua-cam.com/video/Ie9NOhSG6rI/v-deo.html (the day Rue "became" black...in Hunger Games) discussed a lot of these types of issues. It was an interesting watch. No affiliation here, I just enjoyed the video. It mostly covers the backlash when white readers were shown a black character from Hunger Games who was always described as dark skinned but it was easily overlooked and readers were suddenly unkind about the character once she was known to be black instead of white.

I’m not sure, but it might be that the negative comments here look like they’re all from people who are white (of course). Those of us who don’t agree with them want to make it very clear to them that we won’t agree just because we are white and to everyone else that we can be aware when discrimination exists, too, and want to make things change. We just don’t always know how to say it in the best way and still need to learn.

Show us the decor because they are very picky about real estate value. Mine was done 25 years ago and I don’t have granite countertops or stainless appliances so I would get counted way down. My floors need all redone and walls need painted, woodwork too. We don’t have any murals painted on walls or posters up. But the tv shows showing perfectly decorated homes hurts resale markets. People don’t want different or creative. For example I don’t like your orange picture behind you on light blue walls, in fact I would never paint anything light blue. I’m just telling you the truth. I know I would get dinged badly, people expect perfect neutral decor. My whole front needs new landscaping and my husband is dead and my daughter and I are both handicapped so we can’t fix it up. We will take a huge hit on value if we sell and we are white. Is that racism or are you really looking honestly at your house? I love the style and brick if those are the pictures of your house. Bring in an expert and have them tell you how to stage it for resale.

@@nicolcacolaDid you miss the part where her (white) realtor told her to remove her pictures BECAUSE there were a lot of racist buyers out there?

@SnowLeopardForever The point is irregardless of the cosmetic, philosophical, religious, or ethical reasons a person wouldn't buy a house, removing all personal items is a must to sell at market value.
I understand what you are saying, but companies need to leave their biases at the door.

It's kind of their fault if they did their research like they said they should of gotten a realtor to give an appraisal as they make a commission so they naturally want the highest price for your house, and its free.

This couple didn't "jump to the conclusion." The evidence was there in black and white (pardon the expression .)
I agree, the mix race reporter, who probably hasn't claimed being black ever, showed her discrimination.
It's always "an assumption" to people who never understand it but exercise the behavior. In my opinion. Everyone knows it's discrimination.
That was a low blow. These people are educated.
Wow. How disgusting that you and your household were treated like this. Prayers for good health to you all.

@@Charlie-xj5jm But that's not a solution. We should be able to get an appraisal without worrying about our skin color affecting the results. Amazing couple. I hope they are able to get their home paid off early so that they are able to live comfortably. That's dispicable....
I know what you mean. I’m happy for them
The only problem is that they had to both be doctors, him a professor (I believe) who teaches civil rights and historical housing discrimination in America, to be aware of what happened to them. Same house, same builder, same bricks, etc. but a home in a black neighborhood is usually 30% lower valued than the exact same home in a gentrification neighborhood.
right people never seem to be white 🤔
Actually, it was perfectly phrased.

Former loan officer here. Unfortunately this story is all too common the appraiser industry is overwhelmingly older white male dominated. If you feel your appraisal is unfair always get a 2nd one.

Well typically it's what the appraisal companies/ banks / insurance companies do , due to statistics. Statistically black neighborhoods have higher crime, and do not take care of their neighborhoods ect. Obviously these people that experienced this would be amazing neighbors & an asset to their communities.
@@WarmongerYT , this is an unbelievably asinine statement. Appraisals are done typically this way due to statistics? Then you doubled down on your bigoted ignorance by saying typically black people don't take care of their neighborhoods? You sound like the typical irrevocable racist.
An honest, non-criminal appraisal should never be based on the race of the owner. It should be based on the size and physical condition of the subject property and the recent sale prices of similar properties in same area.
If the racist, criminal appraiser had done an honest or competent job he would not have come up with such a false number. It tells you that he arbitrarily picked a number based on his level of hate for black people. He was using one of the usual tools that are employed to screw black people over.

What?

Thank you for sharing your story. It helps to enlighten that that sadlt racism still exist today. Praying God will heal you physically and emotionally. Stand tall. God is great.
We’re getting tired of these stories of discrimination to black home owners been blasted on the media and nothing happens to this appraisal companies. What’s the federal government office of equal opportunity doing about it?
As a former real estate agent I can say that we recommended everyone regardless of race to remove all personal items that would identify the owners, regardless of race. Standard practice.
I’m not saying this couple wasn’t being whitewashed. They obviously were.
Very sad this has happened by anyone.
But this wasn't for a sale, it was for an appraisal.
@@lolacole5653 An appraisal is still impacted by a person's subjective opinion. Appraiser's are just people, and people are flawed... Unfortunately flawed people get into positions where they can have a real impact on somebody, this goes for many different careers, police officer for example... Cop might give a warning to somebody they like for going 10 over, but ticket a different individual for the exact same infraction. It's the discretion people are given that gets misused.

Remove all personal items including yourself?

Home owners don't usually stay when their homes are being showcased.... so yes the first personal thing that would be removed from the home is ones self.
WHY DO YOU THINK 🤔 That on most documents they asked the question of race?
