From what i've noticed going deeper and deeper in to starsector, is that at higher fleet sizes range starts getting more and more a stat that's critical. you just get to bring so much more guns to bear on a target and have so much covered ground to retreat and vent
This applies to fundamentally all battle, irl, historically, and in games. Range is king. Having the ability to shoot at your enemy while all *they* can do is sit and watch the bullets come is a massive advantage. Even if you don't have the speed to keep them at range, the early alpha strike forces your enemy to raise shields, lowering their speed, building hard flux, etc. etc. while you still have nothing to worry about.
it depends on how dense the fight is, if you micromanage to break apart fleets into multiple 3v3s range doesnt really matter, the problem is when a guy with low range goes to confirm a kill and gets focused by their entire fleet
@@joelfilho2625 Its why i love Diable Avionics to much in starsector. It's got that great mix of stand-off tactics and just saturation tactics when going in for the kill after the initial skirmish
I wondered a Perun reference was on the way when you said 'I should do a power point presentation'... Monitor nerf is already in place - dev made it so Flux Shunt hullmod prevents installation of Safety Overrides in the first place, since it was the flux dissipation from SO what made Monitor unkillable.
Yooo, a midline fleet without Gryphon spam, mad respect sir. Also damn was this recorded half a year ago, maybe more? I remember those Spiderman zoomer edits and that shit is ancient I feel like. But seeing how you woke up from a metaphorical hibernation perhaps you're just catching up with the rest of the world.
You know, that Midline hits hard. Those midline ships hit deep. I don't know what's going on, but I feel compelled to use the word "hits" to describe how I feel about something; atleast for the past 5 years. Like a stockshow judge describing a goat or steer...
I feel like any spradsheet you made and talked about with loadouts etc would change how the community play the game. I swear everytime you do a fleet like this it looks average and then you go to combat and it just dominates everything. I love it
This video did feel like a PP presentation anyway. Might as well add that. To be fair I'm having trouble following Perun lately. those presentations do take time to absorb.
Intros like these are exactly why I was totally flabbergasted you're so much younger than me. 😅 You're giving major sarcastic Xennial. Did I do that right? Anyway, this is exactly the content that make this channel a must-sub for any Starsector player. I usually give Champions the more obvious full laser treatment and am often underwhelmed even with with High Energy Focus. I never would've thought to pair the Tach Lance with HVDs. In fact I'd have guessed you'd just use Eagles or even another capital instead, like a support Pegasus with Squalls and Locusts or something. I usually stick either PD or Salamanders (or both) on my Monitors and set them on escort duty, but it only just occurred to me as I watched that I may be holding them back doing that. I'm guessing the Light Mortars (or any non-PD/non-missile weapon) changes their AI? And of course now I'm wondering if two small ballistics are even worth it; I'd be tempted to stick a Salamander on there just for that extra annoyance factor. Lastly it always seemed like the general consensus was that nerfing the Hurricane MIRV back in 0.96 killed them, but wow, that Pegasus with four of them plus Fast Missile Racks and ECCM is a menace! Great show!
@@bigbrainenergyguy i figured that out with a bit of googling and reading through the comments. it's crazy how he's known primarily for something completely different than what I knew him from, but such is life I suppose. it would be like Drachinifel playing a game, going viral and suddenly the naval history is on the second, backburner channel.
Hmm, double Burst PD on the Pegasus probably has better firing arcs but I prefer using Dual FLAK when I can because of the higher sustained damage. On the Champion I'd be tempted to drop 4 capacitors for 4 Mining Lasers. Grouped together they're actually not that bad.
Played something extremely similar around a year ago, except a bit more missile-centric with a Gryphon. It was good, but I constantly ran into issues with AI doing dumb stuff like one long range ship chasing an enemy into close quarters and another one (same exact behavior parameters and long-range setup) just hiding behind the first one at zero flux and doing nothing. Thankfully the personally piloted assymetric Conquest held it all together in "mostly functional" condition against ordos, since remnants tend to overvalue their shields even in numerical advantage.

I do remember Perun! He used to play MP Dominions(great game by the way), then, just like you, I stopped watching and now he does all this military analysis stuff, with some Terra Invicta on the side. Very funny, lol Midline is great. It's not actually a jack of all trades. Sure, the hulls are flexible in the sense that you can make a lot of different fits, but it works best when specialized within an overarching fleet structure. I personaly like the range doctrine. The battle in this video is a good showing why. Unless you are fighting Pathers or reckless AIs, the enemy will be afraid of your long range weapons and will be mostly unable to shoot you. If they charge in, you shoot them a bunch before they get in range, often killing them. Midline burns bright with a range build! Still trying to make the Vigilance work as more than a simple Pilum platform. Very finnicky ship. I have had some success with a torpedo boat strike build of Heavy Needlers and Jackhammers with as much speed as possible. Always great to see one charging an overfluxed capital, loosing them torps for the sweet kill.
Me @ Midline when my game is vanilla: Ew, disgusting, gross. Why would I ever use you instead of big brick or high tech?? Me when Diable Avionics is in my game: I am and will always love midline. I've said this my entire life.
I usually fly my ships without building-in any hullmods, to pretend that it's an equal fight against ai fleet. I think it could be interesting to see some opinions about unmodded ships in the future.
31:00 Would unironically love this. I've pretty much only been playing frigate spam, and I'd really like any sort of edu content that would help me play it better in the endgame. Orders specifically I feel like are really important. But I think that aspect of my gameplay is a bit coinflippy. I'm genuinely not sure if I'm giving the wrong orders sometimes, or if the AI goes from 'pretty competent' to 'extremely braindead' randomly. It's hard to pinpoint when I'm also flying a ship of my own.
This game is great. You have playstyles, gambits in chess, "line infantry" tactics in 2D space, which is reminiscent of the armies of the past. The tactics of the middle fleet are linear tactics in the classic form, your total energy pool is simply higher than the enemy's and you overcome it in a direct clash with alternating first and second lines. Low-tech ships are Roman cohorts with heavy self-sufficient units that go on a long campaign against barbarians without support and they will be strong enough to stand against the enemy, setting up a marching camp right in the middle of the pirate system. High-tech fleet is cavalry in its classic sense. You can compare it to the Alans, Winged Hussars or again the classic knights of the Middle Ages. And then there are the Huns and Mongols who walk right through you and, screaming "nothing personal, kid," evaporate you and your ***g gaming chair.
I like midline design alot but the ai cannot use midline ships mix of shields and armor well. I feel like the ai uses high tech shields well and I mean, you kind of have to go through low tech armor to kill a ship so ai makes use of it by default, but some midline ships who are hybrid 1.0 shield mitigation ships with some armor the ai cannot make use of. They will overload on the suboptimal shield Flux mitigation and then the armor is not spectacular either so they die fast in alot of cases. The monitor is kind of an anomaly but I end up having to upgrade that poor midline shield mitigation with hardened shields or something since the ai uses low mitigation shields poorly.
The s-mod bonus also fully negates the range penalty from enemy ECM so it's a little better than just that, but you could easily swap it out for something else.
