  • Just telling my side of the story but it really sucks when a so called friend cuts you out on a job you were talking about doing for months. I definitely do not care about the money end of this one It's just the principle of it.

I used to hire a neighbor as a second cameraman for my side wedding business mostly as a favor to him as he needed the cash. Had him signed up for a wedding one weekend and at the last minute he tells me he took another job that weekend and left me scrambling to find a replacement two days before the wedding. Funny thing is he didn't understand why I was so pissed off. I let him have it and never spoke to him again. People are funny. No good deed goes unpunished. You're a class act Ron, don't let it get to you.

You said he is slow to pay too? That is always my biggest red flag when dealing with people. If you have to badger them to pay they aren't worth dealing with. Then when they come begging you to do work you make them pay up front or walk away.

Hello Bondo! What's the old saying? "Burn me once, shame on you". "Burn me twice, shame on me". Just like a tear in a river, I would let him go so fast... When you own a business you have no "friends".Only business associates. I just retired from corporate ownership (sold my factory and retired well). My wife was the first to notice that people who acted like my friends stopped calling when the money dried up as I was no longer signing the front side of checks to them. I knew it would happen and tried to explain it to her.
Conversely there are annual trade shows for my former industry and the new owners are setting up booths at those. Through a contact I heard the people I worked with over several decades were:
shocked that I sold out and retired, missed me, and had very nice things to say about my business ethics, ability, and desire to help any and all that asked. That made me feel pretty good.

Mr. Bond, you are amazing. Of all the videos of yours I have watched over the last few years, this is the most impressive. With no one watching, and no one helping, you made sure the finish on the concrete you had placed was perfection. That's the attention to detail that when things get wild and tough comes into play to make a difficult job still be a success. Well done, Sir!
PS: I noticed you pulled all that wire mesh up into the larger job.... 🤪

We just had an uncle whos been painting for our company for almost 20 years. He was the highest paid employee, and whenever he needed anything, he came straight to us. I mean countless favors were done for him and not a single one in return. Just a month ago he threw a hissy fit all over a project we did for a church and told him hes going to be paid hourly on just this job because its practically charity but we still made sure our guys got paid out of pocket. Fast foward a week he quit and went to one of our main clients who gives us massive projects every year and tried to under cut us from our own jobs. He quit and went to start his own "company" and tried to take our customers right out from under our noses. Good thing the guy who gives us a good portion of our jobs every year told us the situation and said that he would never use him and that we would be the first crew he would ever call for any job. All we can do now is laugh at how badly that backfired for him.

    G'day Bondo,
It's not a nice feeling to find out that you've been "lead to believe", that the job is yours, then they get in someone else.
I'm getting a thicker skin, as I get older.
Your story about being left sitting on the bleachers, is all part of "the joys of being self employed"
I was left feeling let down, after a similar incident, and a wise old man said to me, as he held up his five fingers,
"If you have this many good friends in a lifetime, you'll be doing ok"
I'm lucky, I have a few good friends that have stuck by me through thick and thin,
mind you, i think that one of the tests of "friendship"is if you can still work together after some fairly big disagreements.

When you depend on someone for work and they change on you it feels like a betrayal, but he said he had more guys that he thought and did not expect to show up! Still he should of called you about his dilemma! He was probably overwhelmed at the moment and as an afterthought realized he cut you out! Things happen sometimes, just do not depend on him next time, but it was most likely an error in judgement. Roll with the punches, speak your mind, and let it drop! You still have jobs with him!

You pretty much did the right thing. I wouldn't write the friendship off entirely... just set another boundary or two... no more joint projects without adhering to some pretty firm rules. I would no longer recommend him for jobs I can't fit into my schedule or jobs I don't want to do... at least not until he lives up to promises he makes a few times. I'd still be cordial and all... but, yeah, I wouldn't even consider working with him and I'd make sure he knows why... but then outline what has to happen if we are every going to take on a project together - like half the revenue upfront before you even BEGIN to consider making room in your schedule... NON-REFUNDABLE if he cancels/uses somebody else. Otherwise, it's nice to see him and all that... have a beer or whatever... but yeah - a boundary or two.

Forgive and move on. Takes a little while to get over the sting but know you’ll be better off in the future not having to deal with that nonsense anymore. You’re a smart guy and probably knew a while before this straw that broke the camels back that you’d stop dealing with him eventually…..Keep pluggin Bondo

The bottom line is this. Business friends look out for each other and help each other. Just because he has extra help does not entitle him to give you the snub.
A "business friend" typically refers to a professional relationship that extends beyond mere acquaintanceship in the context of business interactions. I would not hold a grudge, but I would not work with him again.

It’s weird when people just suddenly leave you out of the loop. You don’t know what to think. Haven’t had that with old friends or colleagues, but recently a prospective client was sort of trying to negotiate before we even talked money and went to the building department (they told me when I called ) didn’t tell me anything that he discussed while he knew I was doing the same thing… I knew that wasn’t going to work out-strange way of communicating.

In the corporate world, I've learned that true friendships are rare. Instead, there are reliable colleagues and other categories. Smaller companies can foster friendlier relationships, useful across jobs. Yet, mixing family or close friendships with work is risky. I strongly advise against it; from experience, it's not conducive. This might sound tough, but it's my honest observation. And no, I'm not a narcissist!

Well a friend of mine wanted some shots, I hooked up a chopper, hot rod and pool in return for me detailing the bike, car and cleaning the pool. Day of the shoot that was agreed upon well in advance, I got ghosted. 5 years later, she reached out for a shoot. I still have her on "read"

I've been in business for over 40 years, you will find you have friends/Business associates that will be there when you call, and some when its convenient to them, figure out which is which and treat them accordingly. Be careful that you don't find yourself as one or the other dependent upon your needs, we would like to think we hold ourselves to a higher morality but with deeper reflection and honesty to ones self we all fall short at times. Good luck in your Business and life.
