Return to the Arctic - HALIBUT Spearfishing in freezing waters

  • After the spearfishing trip to Norway I did in 2017 without seeing a halibut I returned over a year later, further north, deep into the Arctic Circle of Norway. Spearfishing in these Arctic waters presents it’s own unique set of challenges. Daylight doesn’t last long and during our week long trip the daylight shortened by over 45 minutes. Exposure to the cold weather means using thick wetsuits up to 9.5mm with water temperatures ranging from 6-8ºC and air temperatures between 1-8ºC - challenging conditions to say the least. The target species follow no rules, they can be anywhere and the vast areas need to be covered by swimming and constantly scanning for halibut. The crew consisted of myself & Andrew Gomm from the UK, Giuliano Tagliacozzo from Italy & Josh Ball from Australia. ALL of the fish captured on this trip was filleted, frozen down and taken back home to enjoy over the winter months. At the time of the trip (2018) Norwegian law allowed each of us to export 20kg of meat from the country because we were at a registered fishing lodge. Nothing was wasted.

    Talk about the adventure of a lifetime - living your dreams with your eyes wide open Daniel. Better still you are making video masterpieces along the way. You had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through, cheering you and your mates on. Brilliant trip, mind-blowing location, incredible fish handled respectfully, and a fantastic group of mates. I don't know how you do this - but every video gets better. Better technically & superbly-crafted stories. Can't believe this is not an adventure channel on Netflix.

    nice going. was a naval diver in Norway for 11 yrs. in the 80's. never approach a flatfish directly from behind or front -- then you'll spook them. Approach from side and fake passing. I used only a 6 ft sling back in the days...everything went down. happy hunting

I've been a diver since 1972 ( U.S. Navy )... did recreational diving 'til I was 47 all over Hawaii & California and I chased big Halibut in the sand flats along the Santa Barbara Chanel Islands, White Seabass in the kelp off Palos Verde cliffs and your video is the best Diving/Spearfishing video yet......AWESOME .... @DanielMann  5 років тому

      I had 7.5mm Forza tre pants and the 9.5mm jacket is straight smooth skin so super comfortable and oh so warm. I checked the 5kg weight vest in with one of my bags and just took 5kg of weights in my belt carry in. Norwegian Air and SAS have no problems with dive weights I’ve found. More interested in the plethora of camera equipment I’m usually taking.

    • @stefpix
      @stefpix 5 років тому

      @@DanielMann Thank you. Did you dive last year with a 5.5mm? A friend went to Guadeloupe and he had to leave his weights behind as they would not allow them on the plane. I heard some times elsewhere there are problems with individual weights more than 2 lbs / 1 kg. Anyway I'd love to go back to Norway and this time spearfish. Is it very pricey? it is one of the most beautiful places I have been to.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  5 років тому +1

      No way I’d use a 5.5mm in Norway. I rarely use my 5.5mm in the U.K. either. I had a 7.5mm jacket. 1.5mm undervest and 6.5mm pants last year. Was 10-12 degrees but the air temp was mid teens so not so bad. Was borderline. I’d go thicker, it’s always going to be cold there. This trip was circa £1K from the U.K. with flights, accommodation, car hire, boat hire, car fuel, boat fuel and food which we brought from the U.K. and Italy.

    I watched the entire video with great interest, and I'd love doing such an experience once in a lifetime.
    I would only hunt for one big halibut though, provided that you feed an entire family for one month with it!

    Your best video yet! Beautiful water, big fish, good friends and great food.
    I have to say you’re too kind to your mate that couldn’t harvest a big halibut. On our boat, we would have been trash talking and questioning his manhood 😂😂😂 its all good on an epic adventure like this.
    Congratulations again on an excellent video and a lifetime memory ✅💪

    Before I clicked on the description and saw this took place in Norway I though it could have been Alaska. It’s incredible how similar Norway looks to my home state. I grew up in a small halibut fishing town, thought I never saw anyone go spear fishing for them. Interesting video!

    great videos, I just got back from Alaska and caught a 90 pound halibut and 25 pound king, some black rock fish, vermillion, chyna bunch of cool fish. so much fun to catch these big ones.

    That is insane! No scuba gear needed. We have excellent halibut fishing here in the Pacific Northwest, especially at a 25 mile long flat spot that starts 15 miles offshore from where I keep my boat. The sucky part is they lie at the bottom of 900 feet of water, which means a lot of work reeling even a twenty-five pound flattie to the boat. Great video! I'm totally jealous!

      Green MarineFive-O
      Cucumber diver/fisherman I was talking to in Ketchikan saw the biggest halibut he’d ever seen in less than 25 feet of water...
