    I feel like instead of taxing us more to pay teachers they need to remove the incessant amount of administration staff at schools. Why the heck does my school need 4 assistant principles, 4 deans, 5 front desk people, 2 people who sit in the attendance office all day, 3 librarians (nobody ever uses the books), 1 dedicated book keeper, 3 accountants, 10 general administrative staff, a psychologist ( who doesn't even teach psychology in spite of it being a course), and 6 counselors? I swear the admin to teacher ratio is nearing 1:2 which is absurd.

      boyrecon most of the teachers were somewhat well payed and then there was a market crash in 2008. Because of this, their paychecks and school funding got cut. Ever scince the economy got up and running again the teachers haven’t gotten their original pay back, hence the teacher strike.

Teachers were one of the few jobs in the country that were not affected by the 2008 recession. As a matter of fact, here in Illinois, it is in the state constitution that teacher salaries and pension payouts are permanently protected and can never be adjusted, unless a 2/3 majority of the state legislature agrees to readdress it.

    They need to get rid of the part of the system where it is virtually impossible to hold teachers accountable and fire them when they neglect their jobs. In Florida teachers receive almost 15 weeks vacation. All of this time off includes: 14 personal days during the school year, summer vacation and all major holidays. 15 weeks is almost 3.50 months downtime. Teachers have a negative habit of complaining about their salaries, however they rarely face consequences when their students struggle academically. Granting teachers tenure was a critical mistake in the U.S. In Florida, the average teacher takes home about $49,000 after taxes, medical insurance and retirement contributions have been deducted from their checks. In Florida, most teachers are not required to hold a graduate degree. In Florida,
    the average salary for a principal is about $64,000 after deductions. Most administrators hold a graduate degree. If a teacher tells you he or she is underpaid, they are lying to your face. In Florida, teachers can elect to receive a portion of their salary during summer vacation or they can receive their entire salary during the school year.

And, if you make on the lower end of that and want to earn more, you have a lot of resources and time to earn even more! UNDERPAID?!

    "40 hour week contract" you're conveniently leaving out the fact that teachers regularly report to work beyond those contract hours on a regular basis. Summers off, are not exactly summers off. Not sure why you are so jaded, but go work in a public school and then see if you still feel the same way.

    • @JackLloyd

      I literally have worked in a public school I know what I am talking about. Teachers who work all that extra are typically not the brightest bulbs and are markedly inefficient in their work. • @Tony29103
      @Tony29103 3 роки тому +8

      No you don't. I'm glad someone like you left the profession if you don't see the value and importance of teachers. I have soo many issues with your video especially when you spout "fact" without providing any annotation or citation, but we'll get to that in a second. First I want to draw your attention to a quote you said " the responsibilities teachers have cannot be fulfilled in the contract hours." You said that but yet in this post you say "Teachers who work all that extra are typically not the brightest bulbs and are markedly inefficient in their work." Sounds like somebody doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about if he can't keep his own bullshit straight.
      Let's go on to your "facts" which aren't.
      "the average teacher makes about the same gross annual income as the average worker." Let's first look at why this is bullshit even if it were true. Considering majority of teachers have graduate degrees, why the fuck should they be making the same as "the average worker" when roughly 32% of the population even holds a college education. So that means more than 2/3 of workers don't have a degree yet you're saying that teachers making the same is okay when about 60% of teachers have graduate degrees? I'm not gonna dispute the fact of this more so just how stupid you sound saying this statement. Let's move on though
      "The average teacher only makes "slightly less" (btw nice scientific terms" than the average college graduate." Um no. Average teacher makes about 59k whereas the average BA holder makes about 61k HOWEVER, we need to factor in the fact that 58% of teachers have advanced degrees and they average about 72k a year.
      (72,000)(.58)+(61,000)(.42)=67380. So that's about 9k higher than the average teacher's salary. Now, you're using wormy sleezy words like "slightly" but I'm pretty sure almost 10k in difference is no where near slightly lower.
      "teachers have a 40 week contract and "several" months off." Considering you even said "the responsibilities teachers have cannot be fulfilled in the contract hours," then the whole notion of comparing using contract hours is bullshit because in ANY OTHER profession any work outside contract hours or "overtime" is given overtime pay. Since teacher's don't get said overtime pay...... Yea your facts are kinda sounding more like opinions.
      "Teachers generally have annual contract security after the first 1-3 years." Sorta, but you can still be laid off and since people like you hate funding education, layoffs happen OFTEN. Let's just consider this year. Hundred's of thousands of teachers were laid off.
      So overall your whatever this was was a waste of time to watch and for you to make. You say teachers make enough yet you aren't a teacher anymore..... You spout facts without providing citation or any form of proof other than the condescending "fact" proclamation before each bullet point. This may persuade the typical UA-cam viewer to take you at your word, but not the educated one like my self. If you were a teacher than you should be educated so there's no excuse for this bull. Either you really aren't that smart, or you're a bold faced liar.
      Oh, and let's not forget the biggest fact. TEACHERS ARE INTEGRAL TO SOCIETY. So the fact that people like you want to come on here and say they don't deserve to make a decent living is a joke. Without teachers society would crumble. We saw this back in 2020 with people praising teachers, yet in July trolls like you were out saying "they don't want to work." Imagine if educators stopped working..... That maybe a good thing for you then, because then more people would buy your snake oiled bullshit.

Only because you say "teachers aren't underpaid they just aren't paid for all of the hours that they are held responsible for." This almost sounds like a contradiction I don't know if you mean it to. The only other thing I will say is everyone who tries to take this into argument looks at only the average they do not take out the top 5% that are working either at a super big school that pays well or the teacher has been there 50 years and gets paid more. They're quite a few states were if you take out these people you can usually drop the average pay about $5,000 a year if not more...

      They aren't underpaid because their contract is what is called "Salary."
      Teachers are typically paid to work a certain number of office hours and, if they choose, could work above those hours.
      Teachers often feel the stress of the workload, but being "underpaid" is a misnomer because they cannot be "underpaid" for a salary paid by force forcible takings.
      There are only market demands and force. As they are not "market actors," they are being paid whatever is given to them.
      It would be no different than a robber complaining that their robbery was "underpaid" because they only found $20 in the wallet they stole.

  • @fusionchef1
    @fusionchef1 3 роки тому +3

    I don't know if your title is serious considering your argument mostly states reason why teachers should be paid more. In any case your facts regarding payrates are false or most likely way out of date for why teachers are underpaid. I do not know where you get you statistics from but the U.S. bureau of labor statistics indicate teachers are paid far under the average yearly pay rate for their education level in almost all areas in the US. Despite what contracts say it is understood that the workload an average teacher has can not be done in a 40 work week in the given school year. In fact if averaged out across a 52 week time span with no vacations an average teacher will work approximately 40hrs a week. some of your arguments actually support this. Having worked in areas where teacher do and do not have union protections, teachers benefits and pay are more than often better in areas where there are unions. This is because other than private schools where teacher pay is funded by government taxes and budget a teacher can not under mostly any circumstance get a raise beyond what what is currently given based on budget. teacher often are afraid and can not leave their teaching positions because teaching skill and credentials more than often does not translate to the public sector job market. Despite the title of the video when listening to your argument you it seems you more or less agreeing. Wish I had more time to argue my points but despite it is saturday I had to go to my classroom and setup for monday because I don't have enough time to do so during school hours and I have to be ready in case I get a walk-in evaluation as it is that time of the year.

    The only other answer if contract says 40 hours then they should invest 40 hours. That doesn't make any sense. Oh I forget about this: Teachers work at home also making sure grades are entered, grading papers, zoom meetings (on their own time). Maybe that contract should be challenged? If starting teachers make almost the same as tenured (30 plus years) then something is wrong. And you wonder why teachers are quitting? They know staying is never going to pay off. And, they cannot draw social security even if they already worked e enough quarters before their teaching career which my daughter had. This happened to another teacher also. This is so wrong. They should be able to get both.

    I'll tell you why they are underpaid Bud. My daughter graduated from a Texas well known university, paid ALL her student loans. Was Teacher of the Year, spent her own money over the years providing supplies, lunch when kids didn't have the money or forgot it, made sure every child valued. She has over 30 years now on Texas and makes around 65,000. 30 years? $65,000??? And those summers they are off are now shortened due to continuous training. My daughter as well as all don't go home at 4pm. They stay and have meetings, prepare their rooms, attend mandatory meetings, parent meetings etc. My daughter six years ago was diagnosed with Lupus. She is in her 50's. She could retire BUT because of retirement pkgs offered she cannot retire for 9 grueling long years because of health insurance costs, salary ( she cannot make it on her salary sge currently has due to the enormous cost of living). SHE paid her student loans off years ago. She worked since 15 years old, helped with helping her mom who was left with four children to raise alone and who never took welfare but worked all the years the kids growing up. Starting teachers in her area start without any experience at $60,000. Go figure. What is in it for loyal hard working great teachers if they spent their entire lives in educating children and cannot keep their living conditions sane as when they are active at work? Texas should pay a professional wage, pay their insurance and reward them for their dedication and their lives spent on your children. That is what is needed. Knowing she has to spend 9 more years not being able to retire is grieving me. She and all like her need a huge raise and a retirement as good as any other state employee!!

Yes, I knew the pay, but most people don’t realize you have to deduct even more because a lot of your own $$ goes to the classroom, activities, supplies, and the kids themselves every month. Not if the parent sees it otherwise. Their kid's ADHD is screwing up the rest of class? Nah, the parent doesn't think their kid needs to be in a special class or on medication so they must be right. teachers cant get what they want from parents, supplies, breakfast when their kid goes hungry to school, their kid to be sent with their uniform, punctuality. If you are salaried, then you salary is based on the time made for the job.
      So:
      "we are not paid for all our time creating assignments, grading, answering students questions, helping students over the phone, speaking with parents while at home,"
      Is immaterial because that is how salary contracts work.
      If you're hourly, and you're being required to do those other items, then you have a solid lawsuit.
      But you're not - because that's not typically how the contracts operate.
      Buying school supplies is not a requirement - which means you're buying them out of your own pocket - not by mandate - and then blaming your contract.
      It would be people like you who are to blame for why teachers don't get paid.
      Why?
      Because you didn't sue if you were commanded to work unpaid or you didn't get reimbursement like you're supposed to if it's for a class demand.

      @@arielwowie2309 First of all obviously this is a situation that should be looked at case by case, some teachers probably are underpaid, some teachers are probably overpaid, clearly funding goes to different places in our schools so this is an issue that should be accessed based on individual school boards. But heres the main point, no one is being forced to become a teacher, they are in those positions because they willingly put themselves there. For the career I want, I'm expecting literally 0 in profit for the first few years after you take out rent and other living costs, and that's completely fair. I wont have the experience yet to demand higher pay, so what do I do? I work my ass off to get to the experience and job that I want, thats how life works. I dont just demand higher pay because I feel entitled to better living standards.

    These comments are sad, the idea that people think that teachers are overpaid and use facts such as pointing out rich men who are teachers to prove that teacher salary’s aren’t low... smh. A teacher does have benefits, long breaks, and the ability to unionize, but they deal with so much, like buying school supplies for their own class, teaching and taking care of kids, working longer days, sometimes until 11:00pm at the school. It’s much more than just a 7:00-2:00 job and the stress doesn’t stop at the school doors. Many teachers tutor outside class. The idea that teachers aren’t underpaid is just straight up denial and an argument easily said from people who have higher salary’s.

      They only deserve what they agree to.
      And, more importantly, what is given via consent.
      Teachers are paid by force - taxes.
      Therefore, they don't deserve anything because taxes are taken by force.
      The buying extra supplies? A choice. On them.
      They don't take responsibility for their actions, just like they don't take responsibility for their finances.

    Just pointing out the fact that teachers kind of shape the future of society. And actually, the majority of teachers do work in the summer making lesson plans for when school begins(the same can be said for any breaks within the school year). And no duh some teachers don't work in the summer, there's nothing to work for, a teacher can't do their job without students to teach.

Also there numerous fields where people work more than the regular 9-5 yet get paid for 8 hours a days. I constantly am getting stuff done at night at home and not getting “paid” for it. One of the great things about teachers is they shape the future of society, BUT that doesn’t mean they should be PAID more when they already have a higher starting and average salary than most people in other fields.

      No, you should only be paid for what the market allows. However, you're not a market employee. Your job is funded by taxation, which is money forcibly taken from people.
      If your job funding increase was honest, you'd go and just point a gun to your neighbor's head like the IRS does if you wanted to be paid more.
      In reality, you choose the job you have because the government has monopolized the product, and you find the subjective value of taking that government-funded job greater than the risk of doing anything else.

    Let me quote this “teachers should earn just as much as doctors because a doctor can do heart surgery and save the life of a kid but a great teacher can reach the heart of that kid and allow them to truly live see teachers are hero’s they don’t have to get blame but there not the problem they work in a system without many options or rights” do you think differently about teachers pay now

    • @JackLloyd
      @JackLloyd  6 років тому +9

      Lexi Magrone No. That person is completely ignorant on the concept of economics and investment. A doctor requires 8 years of schooling and 2 years of residency. A teacher in most states just needs a bachelor's degree. The idea that a teacher should automatically be paid more with less time spent and less money spent on reaching their professional status is absurd.
      But, more importantly, it should be up to market demands. It should be up to voluntary support what teachers earn, not the theft of taxes.

    • @krystlegarsha1296
      @krystlegarsha1296 5 років тому +3

      It’s simple economics, doctors work in a hospital where they generate money and lots of it. So, they get paid well. Teachers work in schools, where money is not generated. Therefore, it reflects in their pay. It’s unfortunate, because teachers are very important and we need good ones.

    teachers are underpaid. Also, it depends on the school. If teachers have a stricter school can have it to where they have to grade assignments, do virtual calls while having to monitor the kids and wherever they go and maybe have to go into school depending on what state they teach in. These things are coming out of a person who has never been a teacher. My mom is a teacher and I can tell you that It is hard for teachers to make homework, grade tests and homework, and teach in the same day. These tasks can create unhealthy mental state for teachers as they are always working and only have time to sleep and make dinner. Depending on which state you are in, It also can be all on teachers if a student is not passing. They are also graded on how effective they are with their students. These tasks that teachers need to do to get a higher score on it is all on the teacher. Yet, there is home conditions, lack of sleep, overall not wanting to learn that can lead to these students not doing what they need to. My mom teaches in a district where there is poverty. Some kids do not have internet, or food, or a stable income for their families. These can lead to mental factors on the child on how they focus in school. Of course, teachers have good benefits but this depends on the district. Teachers do have a nice and stable job. Yet, the cost of these benefits cause extensive work hours put on teachers and students and it is for everyday. Depending on the district, Teachers start out with a usual 45,000 - 50,000 dollars a year. They keep going up with experience. Teachers with experience or 25-30 years of teaching can earn up to 75,000-85,000 dollars a year. These wages are decent, but, it depends on the district and the fact that without teachers there would be no jobs or a future of world intellegence shows that this is not good enough pay. In the beginning of teaching, they are only making as much as a worker. This is not fair because teachers work all day everyday. Not to say that workers do not work all day. Workers can be hard skilled workers with good work ethic. Teachers still have to do work on weekends which is usually grading assignments and posting and making assignments.

    • @JackLloyd
      @JackLloyd  3 роки тому +5

      There is no way to suggest that a teacher is "underpaid" without a comparative of what they should be paid and why.
      If you want to understand, go ahead and try to explain WHAT teachers should be paid, why, and by who.
      Then think about the issues with what you write in a comparative.
      The only ethical payment teachers can receive is one that is based on individual choice.

This is what today's teachers deal with on a daily basis. If you don't believe me, spend a day in a local middle school.
