Why Pakistan's Bodybuilders Are Dying

  • Last year, national bodybuilding champion and winner of Mr Pakistan 2011, Shehzad Khan Afridi, suddenly died of a heart attack just a few days after winning a gold medal at the National Championship in Karachi. It is widely understood within the community that the real cause of death was the use of deadly and illegal steroids - and this wasn’t an isolated incident.
For many lower class kids in Pakistan today, bodybuilding has become an obsession and a route out of the abject poverty in which they were born. But time spent at the gym brings them into contact with unscrupulous actors feeding off their dreams, and supplying them with steroids.
VICE World News is in Pakistan to explore firsthand the obsessive culture of bodybuilding among frustrated lower working-class men and how, after investing more than they can afford in this competitive and unforgiving sport, they end up gambling with their lives for a shot at wealth and fame.

Trust me as a competitive bodybuilder, this is the most unhealthy sport on the planet. Unless your working closely with a medical practitioner, getting regular bloodwork, EKGs, Echocardiograms and more, you have a chance of destroying your health permanently.
This game is not a joke, steroids have massive implications on your life. The best thing you can do is have a time when you can bow out before your health is destroyed.
The two major dangers from steroid abuse are damage to your health and kidneys from high blood pressure. Blocked arteries and heart attacks occur from uncontrolled cholesterol that leads to arteoscoloris. Systemic inflammation paired with this is a recipe for disaster.
Trust me please if you are competing and you do use steroids, work with a doctor and consider bowing out with your health. No plastic trophy is worth your life
Edit: As of 6 months ago I'm no longer competing and off cycling steroids. The positive impact on every part of my life is insane since coming off. I only wish more people could see the reality of the sport.
If you aren't pro material after a year it two you never will be and the emotional and physicl turmoil is not worth it.

My aunt had to stop body building because it ended up massively exasperating a family medical condition (a part of the brain malfunctions, causes intense body tremors and constant hand shaking to the point where you're unable to feed yourself and your jaw shakes so much you have difficulty properly chewing) It usually happens when you get into your 60s or 70s but she ended up getting it in her late 30s. The doctor was completely baffled at how young she was when she saw him but nearly floored when he realized it had progressed so much within only 3 years.
She tried a few different treatments so she could still body build but even then the doctors were telling her she needed to quit it. She eventually got surgery to kill the part of the brain that was causing the problem and completely stopped bodybuilding. Now she's a power lifter and that took quite a while for the doctor to sign off on. It was funny seeing her starting to powerlift though because it was a completely different workout routine, completely different diet...etc.

@@ryan-el9er yeah I'd go with the latter. You see, it isn't really quite easy for individuals to go ahead and live their lives according to their will becuase of the overall economic crisis going on. Majority of the population lives under the poverty line, and since bodybuilding itself is pretty prevalent in areas where people barely make both ends meet, taking the required diet and subjecting oneself to all those supplements etc becomes nearly impossible for them to afford. However, if you take a look at more developed areas of the country, people living there who have got a passion for bodybuilding are built fairly big, just because they have the means to get what they need in order to sustain that muscle. Unless there is industry wide compulsory steroid testing for body builders it will never stop. You can’t compete at the top level unless you take steroids. Body builders in the western world know the risks but have far “safer” substances available to them along with coaches and athletes with decades of experience. It wouldn’t be me but it’s a more calculated risk and how hard you push is also a factor so it can be self regulated. And they still die. This is just another heartbreaking story of people exploiting desperate people for money. And for amounts of money that again in the west, couldn’t get you a cup of coffee and a sandwich.

I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. Bodybuilders in the western world have access to safer drugs? Like what lmao? You think the Pakistan doesn’t have pharmacies? You realize a lot of US steroids are IMPORTED from there. They have the exact same drugs available at pharma grade

Worked with a dude using steroids. I couldn't hear him being bossy over a loud engine so he grabbed me because I made a face and threw me clean out of a box truck. Somehow landed on my feet and got the real boss. Words were said, trucks went back to the shop. More words between them and they drew guns on eachother. I got fired. Fun times. I have been training for decades now, using something always seemed tempting. Especially when you hit that point where you simply can not progress anymore, no matter how hard you try. "Just take a bit of testosterone" was something people always kept telling me and more than once I was on the edge of trying it. But I didn't. Now I am in my mid 40s, still training, still healthy. While one of my old training buddies can't train anymore because he fked up his joints and sinews. And one buddy who just "tried a bit of testosterone" now has severe health issues with age 45. One had a heart attack two years ago and luckily survived.
It simply isn't worth it. You never know how your body reacts, you can have an absurd tolerance to the drug...but the consquences will come at some point. It makes me sad that in a poor country like Pakistan people do that to their bodies, mainly trying to better their lifes and having some kind of perspective. The only people "winning" here are the big underground drug labs and the black market sellers. :(

tbh it all depends on the dosage and what you use. Low dose test like TRT level can actually benefit men 35+. Low dose deca can do miracles for joint inflammation (I would know, as it did for me). There are levels to steroid usage vs abuse
