I agree with the "fish plate" guy.. Or you could root weld them together. A butt weld isn't structural, however.

What the hell is a fish plate? Did you mean fish dish?

@@swedishpsychopath8795 it is also referred to as a gusset. In this case I need to put a piece of flat bar across the welds on the tongue to make the joint structurally sound.
