Thanks Ernie. I am a new woodturner (I started in may) and I saw your videos about making twist candlesticks. I bought a few hss twist drills and the thing that holds them with the morse taper (also without the key). This video was very helpful for learning other than the regular way, which is the only one I know from metal turning.
Thanks Mr. Conover, your practical ways of doing things is awesome. I have your books and find them to be very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your skills and talent. Merry Christmas!
Thanks Ernie for these great tips. Learn something every time you post a new video.
Thank you for this! I've been struggling with a piece that needed center holes on both ends, and my pen jaws just weren't cutting it. Your technique for drilling spindles should solve my problem!
Great video, really helped me with some questions I had!
Brilliant, very informative, thank you.
Great ideas. I’ll have to remember them for future projects.
Thanks Ernie!
Awesome techniques! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for showing & sharing that
Clever stuff!
The larger the forstner bit the SLOWER THE LATHE/Bit SPEED !
How deep of a hole can you drill with a lathe? I’m interested in whistle/ flute making.
If you hold the drill in the headstock and push the work with the tailstock you can drill from each end and get twice the flute length of the drill. Holding the work with a clamp may be advisable to prevent injury if you drill out the side. A standard length twist drill is called a jobber, but you can buy long versions called an aircraft drill. For flute making you will have to then use a reamer to get the conical bore.
