Roger became a little bit of a tyrant. Just about anyone who's worked with him says the same thing. But his writing prowess cannot be denied. One of the best ever in Rock. Together they all inspired each other to be something greater than the sum of their individual parts. And that we can all be grateful for.. for the time it lasted, which was significant as bands go.
Roger developed a god complex and as David has famously said, he wanted to make a solo record with the rest of the band as his backing support. One look at Roger today really tells you all you need to know.
Roger Waters was an egomaniac and control freak. He had the band fire Rick Wright, the key board player who as you two well know is such a talent and integral part of the band. He wrote many of their classics.
Lots of songs are about the feud between Roger and David. Roger left the band after The Wall but wanted to stop the band but David wanted to continue without him.
Do you know what all guitars wish for Christmas? David Gilmour! ------------------------------- After Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd, the band had no real leader. At the time they were going through an incredibly prolific and also very friendly period, producing arguably their best music (Meddle, DSOTM, WYWH). Around 76, before Animals was recorded, Roger gradually started to take the initiative and become the self-appointed leader, which wouldn't have been a bad thing if he hadn't also started to come across as bossy. He stopped accepting the opinions of others, extorted the biggest fees, and working with him became difficult and sometimes unbearable. Others also began to resent the fact that he was increasingly pushing politics into his repertoire. The collaboration on The Wall was practically in ruins. They hardly met in the studio, Roger almost programmatically rejected the others' ideas, and if it hadn't been for Bob Ezrin (producer and musician) acting as a mediator and catalyst, they might not have finished. In a way it's a shame, but as you say, two such musical geniuses with such different personalities really couldn't have lasted long together. I've read several interviews with musicians who later had the opportunity to play with Roger or David. What a huge difference there must have been between them. Roger is said to be choleric and bossy, while David is always smiling and friendly. I think that in itself says something...
David has a few other songs about Roger as well, if you're ever feeling curious. from his second solo album 'About Face' his song You Know I'm Right was his first effort at addressing Roger's behavior. Another song on Division Bell has a verse about Roger. Poles Apart. It also has a verse about Syd.
Roger became too authoritarian by wanting things done 'his" way. Instead of looking at what Pink Floyd created, Roger thought he created it all and no one contributed. David felt that the music AND the words combined move people and wanted to a collective feel to the group, where Roger wanted a "my way of the highway" group.
Pink Floyd was the first concert I ever saw (in the late 80’s) and just blew my mind. Hard for anything else to compete even having seen many tier-1 bands and amazing performers since.
After Roger left, the sound changed. It wasn't as stressed, but did not lose its edge. It took me a little while to conform. When the team was together it was magical. Louder than Words even.
Few things I just noticed: this was recorded without an audience plus on the screens you see images of loose screws and bolts I believe ... a not so subtle hint towards someone 'having a screw loose" i.e. being a bit mad.
basic Roger thought he was Pink Floyd made all decisions he fired Rick Wright on the Wall album because Rick had something else to do that day. Roger had a ego problem.
Very one-sided view. Why didn't David and Nick stand up for Rick, who didn't return from Greece? Roger and David are such different alpha animals, neither one better than the other. Neither understood the overarching message of their The Wall at all and each of them built their own wall. A few years passed before David finally “hired” Rick again, at DB again.
Great reaction as always guys. The interesting thing for me is if you watch the ‘Pompeii’ documentary from 1974 or even earlier interviews with the band. They always spoke openly about the tension and creative differences that were going on behind the scenes. So when you think about it on those terms. It’s actually a miracle that they managed to stay together for as long as they did before it all inevitably came crashing down.
You guys have to hit John Denver! His music is definitely right up your alley. Will definitely bring out the tears, not in a sad way either. Annie's Song, Rocky mountain high, Country roads, Back home again. I'll be waiting! Love yall❤
Such a beautiful number, played by a awesome band, the biggest regret I’ve will have when I’m not on the world anymore, would be have never experienced Pink Floyd life, have been to 3 concerts whit a (copy band named Brit Floyd) they are fantastic but not Pink Floyd a band I’ve love so much to chill out to ❤️
What gets lost in the RW v DG feud is the fact that Roger bullied Richard Wright out of the band, essentially making life so miserable for him he left the band. The band broke up after Waters wrote the Final Cut album (A cathartic purge that should have remained on a psychologist's couch.) Gilmour wanted more time to write some songs for the album and Waters refused. Roger is a genius but a bully and like all great artists, temperamental and hard-headed. Gilmour ,Wright, and Mason just wanted to make PF music. Waters wanted to exorcise his demons at the expense of the band. At least IMO and I lived through it.
Sadly ‘Mr Miseryguts” hasn’t made in my opinion any decent music since leaving Floyd - he was at his best when collaborating with the band and not being a megalomaniac - Roger wanted to fold the band but David carried on and PULSE minus Roger is their finest concert which I think eats Roger up. Gilmour at Gdańsk with Rick and Guy and Manzanera and an orchestra is some of the best playing of the Floyd catalogue. Especially the last ever ECHOES because of Rick’s death - it is special and I prefer it over Pompeii
It's too bad in a sense that Rodger left the band to go out on his own and he's the one who announced Pink Floyd was done. However he said Pink Floyd was done without consulting the other three members which still included Richard wright who had been fired from the band by Rodger! The thing that's the most sad is David his music and Rogers lyrics would come together and make such a brilliant music and songs and with them parting ways they robbed us listeners of another Dark Side of The Moon or another "Animals"!!! Such a shame!!!
Also, they went hard thru out the 70s on tour. Roger was irritated at Rick for not contributing more and basically told him to take a hike during the Wall tour. They spent way too much money on the Wall production of Roger’s idea. Nick quit after that and they basically just quit each other. Roger cut his own album and had David on it for a couple songs. David then got Nick and Rick and started over- to Roger’s dismay. He sued to try and stop it. Then PF came out with more great music and created further riff. Roger became more and more political and outspoken while PF just made more music. Roger had a couple good tours also, but always shined the light on himself rather than all of his group. Anyway with this and the other comments you get a pic
Roger was (is) a genius, but sadly, unlike David, he had a massive ego and feelings of grandeur, he thought he was better than the rest of the band. In a radio interview in the early 80s, when asked what a Roger Waters solo album will sound like, he told the host "You've been listening to them for years, they're called Pink Floyd records" < Not nice and also inaccurate, they ALL added to the sound and feel.
If you want a good example as to the whole Roger Waters thing just watch the live version of 'Mother' with the original line up and it's plain to see. Roger is there complete with headphones and t-shirt with No.1 written on it.
Love this channel. You guys are definitely missing some essential pink floyd still. Both parts of echoes is an essential listen for a floyd fan. Theres some great songs on the albums Meddle and Obscured by clouds as well. The late floyd without roger is more civil but the music does lack that genius he supplied to the band. Love to hear a Welcome to the machine react or a have a cigar react. Fearless, in the flesh, mother, one of my turns, are quality picks aswell. Dont want u guys to get burned out on the gilmour solo stuff too much as it does lack some depth the full band has to offer in my personal opinion.
Have you ever reacted to the song "Sorrow" live pulse concert! If not you will be blown away! Roger was so selfish and the rest of the band had enough of his BS! So Rodger left the band! They didn't miss a beat when he left!
The band didn't like the direction of their music being push by Roger. "Sheep" 'The Wall" (90 % Rogers vision) " Final Cut' ( 100 % Roger P.K. got credit for just doing the music). Roger's lyric were getting so political and angry . Which later Roger confess to his anger. Roger said that their songs were about lyrics where Dave said the music matter. Roger is one of the best lyricist as his concept album " Amused to Death". Which he wrote after the "Gulf War" " as he saw TV live. Context is what TV has become in the world. Roger dad was kill in WW 2 at 6 months old , his dads dad was killed in WW 1 as a baby and now we are showing on TV what's happening in front of TV. Reaction will becoming on this.
Roger Waters is a brilliant lyricist and a very good bassist (despite some shade thrown his way), but he suffered from a lot of personal trauma that didn't just give birth to great lyrics but also abused his band-mates. I feel sad for him, but he is on his own path now. I don't mean this as a criticism, but David's lyrics were never as consistently good as Roger's; but some were as good, and few may be better, imho, but on the whole, Roger was the better lyricist. When it comes to musicianship, however, even though Roger was a good bassist, his three band-mates were better, imho, and David Gilmour is that rare musician who just has an ear for what human beings need to hear--few come even close. Thank you for listening to more PF!
You are right it is sad and what they produced together as a band is better than anything either did after the split. I honestly don't count post Waters stuff as Pink Floyd whatever it says on the credits. sometimes you need that creative tension to produce magic
The main difference when Waters is not there? The band are all smiling at each other!
😏
😆 It’s sad, but absolutely true.
Well said! When they were working together towards the same goal, they were unstoppable and immaculate
Louder Than Words!
Roger developed a god complex and as David has famously said, he wanted to make a solo record with the rest of the band as his backing support. One look at Roger today really tells you all you need to know.
Absolutely!
Huge Waters fan, saw him three times over the years, agree with every word you said.
Roger Waters was an egomaniac and control freak. He had the band fire Rick Wright, the key board player who as you two well know is such a talent and integral part of the band. He wrote many of their classics.
The beauty of watching your reactions is that I beam when your faces beam with smiles and happiness
Lots of songs are about the feud between Roger and David. Roger left the band after The Wall but wanted to stop the band but David wanted to continue without him.
Actually, Roger left after The Final Cut.
Do you know what all guitars wish for Christmas? David Gilmour!

One of my personal faves from Pink Floyd
Pink Floyd was the first concert I ever saw (in the late 80’s) and just blew my mind. Hard for anything else to compete even having seen many tier-1 bands and amazing performers since.

This is a rehearsal and it sounds just as good as when they did it at the pulse concert lol
Now they are playing forever...their best legacy for all
This was the rehearsal version
YES!!!!!
One of the hardest things to reconcile in my head, as a Floyd fan. I absolutely adore the music with all my heart......but Waters is a prick!
Brilliantly spoken

Roger did good lyrics but was a nasty piece of work and once the Narcissistic fool left the band we found where the talent had originated from.
