One thing that I note from the unbelted tests is that we would have had to mandate the use of 2 point lapbelts to get the maximum mitigation of injuries even with high quality airbags(SIRS).

It looks like the active headrests were extended before the crash. I know this because my wife's 2007 E class was bumped in traffic and both headrests extended and had to be reset.

I believe they can deploy before impact. I used to have a W211 and mine deployed while taking extreme evasive action, at the same time the seatbelts tightened and the windows went up...but there was no physical impact.

Wow amazing how the A pillar, windshield and the whole underbody don't move a thing. That's a real German Panzer.
Today's cars are more flexible even Mercedes. It's better when you hit a "soft" target.
Older cars are more safe with hard obstacles like trees and trucks.

So what happened to the E 350? This was the 320 only. By the way these dummies were so far forward that they were almost biting on the dashboard before the crash

5th percentile female test dummies, thus shorter legs and shorter arms and moved forward for reaching dashboard controls.

Why they made dual stage airbags depending on the seat position different charges in the air bag and ignited. There is a company called autoliv that does quite a bit of the science behind these. Interesting stuff..

What happened to the days they tested cars at 50 to 70 miles an hour. off set was two cars driven towards each other one test I saw from Cadillac was driven into a lamp post another from Dodge 70 miles an hour into a cement road block. Holden Australia even tested Roll overs in the 60's. I have an E500 and saw this, suffice to saw a bit worrying when impact of an oncoming vehicle will be at least a combined speed of 40 - 60 mph depending on which country and a highway total of 100- 130 mph and if a truck is involved you'll be needing more than a séance to get ya out of the upholstery. Then you have to account fro nose down not level as in the lab test assuming the driver has braked hence the lower speed of impact,
