Once I started tucking in all my tops about 10 years ago, or wearing very short ones (waist-length), I loved my figure again! It makes a huge difference in proportion. I’m 63, so my tummy is rounded, but I don’t care if it shows, it’s not important compared to the lengthening effect of showing the waistline.

I have small hips and a large bust, too. Isn’t this an impossible shape to fit? I have to de-hip and de-thigh every dress, skirt or pair of trousers, by replacing those curvy, bulging hip/thigh seams with straight ones. Thank goodness I can do most of my own alterations, but not especially well! Most trousers/jeans can’t be narrowed, they have to have no: flat-felled seams, side zips or side pockets, it really limits our choices. My sewing skills are definitely on the beginner side of intermediate!🙂

Button-down shirts are shirts with smaller buttons at the collar points, to fasten the collar to the shirt. Button-up shirts are any shirt with buttons lining the front to open/close the shirt.
These pointers work best with button up shirts. I'll leave the button-downs to the menfolk.

I wore vests 30 years ago and have begun to wear them again. I have silk vests and leather ones that are quite lovely. Unbuttoned, they cut a vertical line in the center of your torso, and tapered, give shape to the blouse from waist to hips. How they fall on the hips will make a big difference. I have a larger bust and prefer not to accentuate my waist. Vests are a good compromise, and work well with button-down shirts.

I am very petite and slim with a long neck which is thin. Have my hair in a bob below my ears, above my shoulders. I try to hide my neck with scarves, high necked tops. With some of my tops, instead of tucking, I use an interesting belt which creates the illusion of having a more curvy figure. I will be 74 tomorrow and aging gracefully. I do like this channel and have enjoyed seeing some lovely fashion. I like the look of the shirt under a simple sweater, I can wear that. I like my shirt sleeves rolled although my limbs are not short. Adds interest with a bracelet. I love how the scarf is worn around the open shirt, with the wide leg pants. Thank you for this video.

Most women I know complain about their neck that it's too short or broad, I never heard about a neck being too long, a long slim neck is most desirable like as a 'beauty standard' or 'concept', I think about Nefertiti for example, but when I learned one thing over the years: People see themselves very differently in the mirror as other people see them, body parts can be perceived very weirdly by oneself, while other people have no clue, what you're talking about. Everybody has at least one body part that looks very differently depending on who looks at it: self via the mirror or an observer. There is a word for it (or a condition) that darn slipped my mind at the moment.
I bet you are beautiful and fit and bright and alert. I hope when I am 74 (or rather, if) I draw somewhere near that, too.
It's a pity that many women don't look after themselves at all over a certain age, like, they let themselves go and just don't care anymore.
My mum unfortunately is drifting rather rapidly towards that don't-care-attitude. She doesn't understand that a woman can be comfortable and chic at the same time.
Thank you for sharing and I send you all the best wishes ❤️

I just love shirts and other tops with V-necks and collars, I find them very flattering as a slim, but busty, petite. I think my face does tend toward fleshiness and I like having the angles of a classic, pointed collar near it. I adore the Polo knit collared tops, especially, and am so happy they’re trending again. I searched for them for years, along with another trend, the contrast-trim detail. I love that these and other classics are trending again, I couldn’t ever give them up, anyway.

Button down…or is it button up?? 😬
These are excellent tips! As a breast-feeding mom right now, but down shirts are a must and staple in my wardrobe. It absolutely makes sense about round face and large bust making this top in its traditional wear rather unflattering. I think this is why I just don’t like turtlenecks! I have found them to be the most unflattering for me. Another really interesting way to wear a button-down is to actually tuck the collar under and button “inside out” which makes the buttons invisible and takes the collar away. Leave the top one or two buttons undone and tuck it under with the color and it makes a beautiful neckline and a completely different shirt style from the same shirt. I love the French rolled sleeve style too.

Great advice! I'm average height (5 foot 6) but also struggle with button down shirts looking weirdly odd and overly formal, but i find them super comfy as I hate having my neck exposed. The rolling up the sleeves is a good tip! More for the reason that sleeves are often too short on me, but it helps to soften the overall silhouette. Basically, less shirt on show (tucked in, rolled up and neck open) and more skin!!

Great tips, I’m a petite, narrow rectangle shape with a (naturally) large bust, a difficult shape to fit and style. I also avoid those trending dropped-shoulder seam styles; my shoulders, like all my frame, are narrow and these are very unflattering on everyone. I can only size down so much because of my bust size, so the dropped shoulder seams go almost down to my elbows! I can’t wait for this ugly trend to pass, it’s in practically every top I see. There’s a reason why certain cuts, like a standard shoulder seam, became classics - because they always look great! Bring back bust darts, too, you designers and brands! Even the smallest-busted women among us don’t have flat chests like men! I know it costs more to make a shirt with them, so just put that in the price. Apparel shouldn’t be just about huge brand profits! We want natural, breathable fibers, well-designed, classic but modern, styling and quality construction! I, for one, am happy to pay more for top-quality apparel. We American women shouldn’t be so fixated on getting the cheapest possible price, either! It only encourages brands to cut every corner they possibly can. For Chi: ❤

    • @llamasugar5478
      @llamasugar5478 2 місяці тому +1

Yes! I hate those dropped seams-and the opposite, diagonal set-in sleeves. Both of them make me look top-heavy even though I have a _fairly_ balanced figure. Cannot wait for these trends to pass; until then, I’ll be looking for classics at the thrift shop.

Bravo, I agree with everything you said! Bring back actual fitted clothes. Im boggled at how even expensive brands are made so cheaply.

Yup, definitely with you about dropped or relax shoulder seams. It makes me look more round shouldered and swamped. I started sewing my own clothes a few years ago and finally have shirts that fit. Look at Silhoutte patterns, she has great vids that go into altering a pattern so it really fits each person. Personally I like princess seams over bust darts but that’s less commonly seen.

Thank you, dear. I am so close to getting rid of my button down shirts. There's always something wrong...

😊Experiment & 📷 snap a photo to examine later. Button ups have always been a trial for my extreme hourglass shape ⏳️. In order to button properly w/o any stress at the bust, I often have to size up ⬆️. That leaves me w/all sorts of bulky fabric ↔️ around my waist that is tricky to tuck. They only stay in, secure, & look right when wearing panty hose or spanx that will corral that bulk.
I inherited XL button ups from a beau that I love to wrap in front over a cropped tank. No fussing w/the buttons, worrying about bulk, or being concerned about modesty. The wrap style & full tuck is very flattering to my figure👍. Again, need bike shorts or spanx to secure
I like to wear my softer, silkier shirts open at the collar & knotted at my waist for a cropped look. The only time I leave the shirt hem untucked is under a tighter sweater vest or a slightly cropped jumper.
I also use large, more tailored type button ups as a light "shacket" layer. Leave it open over a body-con tucked tank. If I leave a tank hem out, I might put on a belt to raise the focus👁👁 up to my waist ⬆️ (vs the lower hem⬇️). The shacket takes the place of a blazer that's usually too heavy & hot🥵 in my location.
My long sleeves are always cuffed or rolled to the elbow. 😮Women's shirts tend to be too short for my arms. While Men's shirts are usually too long😔.
Looking for the perfect fabric, cut, & fit can be tricky, but it's worth the search if you like this classic piece.

When I tuck my shirt in it balloons out and looks frumpy, even the slim fit ones. My bust isnt even that big, but i know if it were smaller it would look more put together. Combine that with the wider or straight leg pants I wear for wider hips, and i feel voluminous. I've tried so many different ways to tuck a shirt and safety pins to close the gaping at the front, but I'm inclined after year to feel like i can only comfortably wear them as an under or over layer

Beautiful looks you showed. I think that many of the 'no' looks showed are in the fashion magazines and I follow their suggestions but they are dressed by slim and tall models not petit like me. 🙂

I just spent two days shortening my button downs. For some reason the bottom edge falls too long, at mid thigh. I took 2.5 inches off and made all the difference. I show more leg and it's more proportionate.

Excellent video. Someone said, "No one would button up their shirt all they way, but still I tried to wear button-down, and they just horrible on me. I am going to give this a try.

I also have a tendency to fully button up: for delicate, sligthly transparent shirts for sure. I am busty with wide shoulder and narrow back. Open shirts and V-neckd are too scandalous on me me

I have a long neck and a short torso, so buttoning all the way creates good proportion for me.

This is great casual look for Spring
With white dress pants and blouse
The blouse has buttons that be open
To your belly as you wear no bra at all
And you enjoy the soft touch of trousers
Touching your skin fully hips to your feet
You put on stylish shoes with no socks too

You not only tucked your shirt in but you rolled the sleeves up and added sunglasses. So it wasn’t a true comparison to say that just tucking in was what made the difference.

The word _hack_ has negative connotations. There is no word in English that quite captures what you mean, which is something like _clever and desirable styling option,_ or _stylish thing to do._ The word _trick_ has negative connotations, too, but is somewhat closer in sentiment than the clumsy and vague terms _option_ or _thing to do._

These days, on the internet, lots of people use “hack” to mean a simple change or trick, usually a clever and quick method to achieve something. I think she is using it appropriately here. There are so many egregious English mistakes all over UA-cam but I don’t think this is one of them.
