I loved that you picked up on the "if you can" before it even got to the part about Becky. Shows you were really actually thinking about what the song was saying.
I grew up listening to Kenny Rogers. My folks were fond of him so any time I hear him sing I get a warm fuzzy feeling. This song is gut wrenching but a great story!
During generations past, the man of the house would keep a gun above the fireplace mantle. I think there is some intended symbology in the fact Tommy had placed his father's picture in that place instead of a symbol of violence. There just came a time when the correct response was physical.
I really appreciate your reactions. Because of your trade and the natural and structural ingredients of your person, you look at things with as much of a 360* perspective, as Ive seen on YT. This has been a real treat for me watching these videos. Thanks man.
There's a country group called "The Gatlin Brothers". I heard a story that the actual songwriter of this song had some kind of beef with the The Gatlin Brothers and used their names as the villains in the story. When this song came out and was such a huge hit, The Gatlin Brothers' Mother was devastated by it. Not that it was true, but that their name was used in such a way.
Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. Their biggest hit was All The Gold in California and had their own variety television show in either the late 1970s or early 1980s.

The Gatlin Brothers got up to do their hit from that year, live, "All the Gold in California." (Great song for anyone wanting to check it out.) One of the lines from the song is, "All the gold in California, is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in somebody else's name." But when the Gatlin's got to that line, they sang, "...in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in Kenny Roger's name." Bwahaha! Not only was my household cracking up and laughing, but so was the audience, the stars, and Kenny Rogers, there at the awards ceremony. They actually got along really well and would take friendly jabs at each other. As to whether or not the three Gatlin boys was a reference to the three Gatlin brothers, we have never really known. Please listen to Kenny’s “The Greatest”, another great story told with some very pictorial lyrics. Also I recommend “In the Ghetto” performed by Elvis. Not a wasted word and tells a universal, timeless story. It was written by the late Mac Davis.
I liked the point you made that it usually takes many words, a whole book, to tell a story; but songwriters can pack the whole thing into a few choice images. Gail L.
This is quite the song. Important distinction in the words: You don't have to fight to be a man vs Sometimes you have to fight when you're a man. The difference become what makes you a man and what a man needs to do. Violence didn't make him a man, but in this case, it was what a man needed to do. That said, my own view is that if he had come home and found them attacking Becky, then he needed to fight, but it was too late to save Becky from harm, that was more the moment to call in the police. On the other hand, the odds the police would do anything is sadly far less than it should be. Most cases like this end either without a conviction or with a mild slap on the wrist. Definitely in the US, that's the case, but in a lot of other countries too. It's better today than when this song was written, but still not what it should be - so you can understand what would drive someone to dealing with it on their own. Either way, the distinction is important: fighting is not what _makes_ you a man, but a man might need to stand up and fight in some cases.
