I think Maury Muehleisen, the young guitarist that with his beautiful tones coloured Croces songs, also deserves credit. He died with Jim Croce at that fateful airplanecrash in 1973.
He was inspired to write this because of the Dear John letters his buddies were getting when he was in the army. Such a kind and talented man lost too soon.
Jim Croce was such an amazing lyricist. I love his music just as much 50 years later. I'm so glad to see new generations discovering and exploring his great works.
Still so sad whenever I hear his name - just imagining the life he could have lived and all the timeless music he would have created. We have these songs but we could have had so much more
So glad you are doing more of Jim Croce's music. Such a wonderful storyteller & ballad singer. He had a lot of great hits in his short career. "Photographs & Memories", "Time In A Bottle", "You Don't Mess Around With Jim", "I Got A Name", "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues," "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" etc.
One thing that sets you apart in the field of music reactors is your sophisticated appreciation for excellent lyrics. You're right about these lyrics, and on relisten you will see how every phrase in the chorus reveals the push-pull in his mind between the story he wants to tell himself (he's getting over her) and the reality (he's not.) I love your Joni Mitchell reactions for the same reason. Thank you.
I absolutely LOVE Jim Croce's music, and I love your reactions. I like people who can appreciate all genres of music. Jim Croce left this world way too young. I would have loved to hear what he would have given us through the years.
They say a picture paints a thousand words. Well, words set to music can more than paint a picture, they can rip your heart out, draw your tears, bring you joy, hope or laughter and tell the stories of your life. Jim was an artist of the highest order. More please.
I was almost 7 when he died & I remember where I was when my sister told me he died. She was a teenager & I used to listen to his songs with her. Time in a Bottle is a song he wrote when he found out his wife was pregnant with his son AJ. AJ sings it now... If that doesn't make you cry, you're not human. "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" is incredible.
Jim Croce was an incredible song writer & his music is a true gift. With Maury Meuhleisen by his side in most of his pieces, was also a gift. Wonderful artist with truly amazing talent. He has many other song to take a moment with.
You don't have to explain it to those of us who know this from when he first sang it. I have always felt that little, quiet, "You can keep the dime" stabbed my in the heart. Now listen to "Time in a Bottle" and realize it came out just before he died and when he had a new baby.
You are one of the best reactors that I’ve recently found. You got this song perfectly from the beginning. You pay attention and you FEEL the song. Jim was an unbelievable artist, taken way too soon. Good job
Jim Croce was one of a kind. His lyrics are so well written, as if you can see yourself saying it just that way. Or wish you could. He touched on things that the everyman could identify with, from experience, and so his songs always hit home. And such wonderful melodies, the vocal arrangements with Maury on those amazing harmonies, just the perfect embellishment to Jim's lead. They seemed so effortless, yet so perfectly performed. I remember the day we lost Jim and Maury, on my way to Jr. high school in the morning and listening to the radio. He had become such an icon in that short time upon achieving chart success, we were all in shock. He worked so many years to get to that breakthrough, then was gone so quickly. Imagine what his legacy could have been had he been writing and performing for a few more decades!
Jim was a master storyteller. He brings out the emotions of the songs; love, longing, nostalgia. He also had a great sense of humor and wrote songs about funny characters: Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown (based on someone he knew), Rapid Roy (That Stock Car Boy), You Don't Mess Around With Jim, Roller Derby Queen (my favorite), etc. He left us way too soon, but he left us so many great songs. RIP, Jim. September 30, 2024 will be 51 years since he passed away and he is still very much missed and thought about.
Saeed, im 70 so i remember using the operator often. You put in a dime and most were so helpful, looking for names, suggesting a nearby city even if she couldn't find the person you asked for. And shed connect you, and if no answer, she returned your dime . I know all the Croce song by heart. Thank you
He wrote this while he was in the service and at his training camp all the recruits would stand in line to use a pay phone and he often overheard stories similar to this.
@SaeedReacts. Yep...been a fan since the 70s...born in '63. AJ and his mother (Jim's wife) used to have a bar/restaurant in the gaslight district of San Diego...AJ performed there quite often.
Insightful reaction! The tone with which he says “You can keep the dime” is so pitiful, defeated and sad and just says so much about him realizing he most definitely has NOT “overcome the blow”! Masterful storytelling with such sparse lyrics and expressive vocals, conveying much more than is spoken! Miss you, Jim! ❤️✌🏻✌🏻❤️
During the time that this was written, most operators didn't actually sit at a circuit board physically moving plugs/cords. They ran the switching systems with electronic control systems while wearing headsets. They were assigned to regions, rather than localities as the early operators were assigned. They served the same function, but on a larger and faster scale, with much of it semi-automated.
Love this one. AJ Croce has recorded Croce on Croce. He discovered his Dad's music later because it was painful at the time of his loss. It turns out AJ had a lot of the same influences, obscure blues artist.
Thank you for this reaction and the appreciation for this song. Saeed we get exactly what you’re saying too. His words and sincere and heartfelt delivery just pull at your heartstrings. Not easy to hold back the tears. Jim's writing and the nuances he used in these lyrics are a masterclass in song writing! No anger here in his call just kind, true and humble human emotions on display as a result of his loss. His music was a lasting gift to us all and still feels just as real as when it first came out. I’m sad that the world missed out on so many great songs by his untimely death.
When it first came out, they played it 10 times a day on the radio and I didn't have time to dwell on the deeper feelings you get listening all these years later.....great song. Great reaction!
Its very interesting what a few years of living will do to a song. Our perspective changes and the meaning of a song increases. Beautiful. Thanks for watching.
I saw in the comments of your last Jim Croce video that this one was heavily suggested. I'm really glad rhat you enjoyed it. It was always one of my personal favorites. I look forward to "Time in a Bottle" as well.
My favorites from Jim are One Less Set of Footsteps, an upbeat breakup song, the Chuck Barry-esk Rapid Roy, and Lover's Cross, about retaining dignity and sense as the reason for breaking up. So many of his songs charted after he died, the list goes on.🧓🎭🎸🪕🎻🏆💖
Jim was an amazing storyteller. Some of his songs were upbeat and funny, but some are so heartbreaking. I cried the day he died. There will never be another like him.😢
Hi, Saeed😊. Yes Jim Croce is a wonderful storyteller for sure. The 60's and 70's produced many great storytellers. You can't go wrong with any of his songs. You'll love time in a bottle. Another great storytelling song is The Pretender, by Jackson Browne, from the same Era. Harry Chapin is another..Taxi, and Cat's In The Cradle are very thought provoking. I'll buy you a couple cups of coffee for some of those requests 😊. Enjoy this genre of music, young man, lol, it's some of the best ever written and recorded. Say hello to your beautiful family ❤
This is far and away my favorite Jim Croche track. It's something that I feel many people can relate to, and I'm no exception. Fun fact: Tori Amos has covered this several times, and her rendition is beautiful. Thanks for another great reaction! ❤
@@SaeedReacts. Of course! I usually recommend live videos, but if you want to hear it, the best version is from Chicago in 2005. It's on an "official bootleg" recording. I have only seen her 7 times, but I happened to be at that show. Have an awesome day! 😀
Everyone is asking you to react to Time in a bottle. All I’m going to say is that you have tissues close at hand. I was around 12 years old when he came on the scene, and I fell in love with his singing, writing and musical presentation. Approximately a year and a half later he was gone. They played this song and TIAB on the FM radio for hours; I laid in my bed listening to the tribute, in tears, until I finally fell asleep. I was an instant admirer of his talent. I’ll be 65 this year and still remember my complete adoration for that man and his music. Thanks for the memories.
What a great songwriter and singer Jim Croce. I'm glad you got to know a little about his life! Now I realize that I listened to his songs at a young age... His songs definitely deserve to be heard ! Thank you Saeed for this one and for sharing your thoughts!
The greatest human being Philadelphia Pennsylvania ever produced. I'm from 30 miles north of there and Jim is a treasure. Imagine the music if he wouldn't have been taken from us to soon.
Jim Croce was the ultimate storyteller! In addition to the beautiful songs already mentioned there's a whole list of "character" stories: Rapid Roy, Roller Derby Queen, Speed Ball Tucker, Hardtime Losin' man, A Good Time Man, Top Hat Bar& Grill, Workin' at the Car Wash Blues & a couple others that slip my mind after 50 years! Check some of them out!
Jim Croce is a gem. His lyrics are timeless. I had his songbook when a was young. Tried to play guitar and sing his songs. (wasn't very good) but I still know every song by heart. My favorite is I Got a Name.
Look how much meaning you've extracted just from the first verse and one chorus. That's Croce's songwriting genius! Very natural-sounding lines, something you can imagine someone saying, yet they convey so much in such little space!
Man, just luv your reactions! So substantive. No doubt your being a writer and word man has everything to do with it. Not to get more melancholy but, I remember the extra sadness realizing that in that plane crash, we.also lost that masterful guitarist who accompanied him on stage when he performed. 👊💙
Taken way too soon be interesting to see where he would be today in the music field and even with his early death already a legend take the time go down his Rabbit Hole there are a number of great songs Superman's cape lovers cross Leroy Brown photographs and memories amazing singer-songwriter I remember the day that he died we were shocked he has a son Andy who now is just starting to use his father's music sing in clubs and different places Andrew Croce that was a good reaction always love Jim keep spreading the music around brother❤
Loved these songs in the 70s. Some songs you like when you’re young you lose interest in but not Jim Croce. I remember hearing his death on my drive to college in Michigan.
I was told as a little kid of the early 70s that Operators were ringing Jim's phone off the hook, when this song was released, because they were so touched. He had to get an unlisted number. Operators were typically female, and it's said this song won a lot of their hearts. I've been wondering for about 50 years now if that story was true.
AJ Croce has been on tour the last few years (off and on) doing a show where he does a mix of his own music and his father's. I had the good fortune to see it a while back and it was absolutely incredible. He's primarily a jazz musician so his songs are a different style than his father's, but the same talent is there.
🎼 .. I have loved this song for many years Saeed. Occasionally I will sing this at a karaoke , but it still gets me choked up. Jim had a beautiful songwriting style that stays with me forever. You will enjoy his other great songs. TY 🎼🇺🇲🇺🇲
@@tileslasher yeah, and I remember like three minutes into your long distance call on a payphone, the operator would cut into your conversation and tell you to please deposit another 50 cents or whatever for another three minutes, and you would wonder just how long the operator had been listening in on your phone call lol.
Most of Jim's songs will hit you like this...like this or with a full belly, gut laugh. He was an artist with lyrics. And music. The way he could combine the two was a gift few are blessed to receive. Watch out for *'Time In A Bottle'* and *'Photographs and Memories'*. You may need tissues. AJ is definitely his fathers son, after you get through Jim's catalog - try some of AJ's, too! Great reaction! Thank you! More please!
I think Maury Muehleisen, the young guitarist that with his beautiful tones coloured Croces songs, also deserves credit. He died with Jim Croce at that fateful airplanecrash in 1973.
I always bring up Maury when people talk about Jim Croce. Maury was the lead guitarist and Jim played rhythm.
Maury was only 23/24 when he died with Jim. He was such an accomplished musician. Their music has had an impact in my life.
@erickvermeulen9734 Beautifully said !
Also nice to see they included an animated version of Maury in this video.
If you zero in on Maury's playing you can see this guy was an extraordinary guitarist. What a loss of two great talents..R.I.P Maury and Jim.
"You can keep the dime."
Perfect little addition fits beautifully.
I thought that was the best line in the song, because it showed his appreciation to the operator, and that he was going to move on.
Anyone else feel that crushed soul feeling? That pain of betrayal?
Croce was one of those rare, timeless talents. His music still holds up some 50 years later and still feels current.
“There’s something in my eyes…” Genius lyrics.
I Got A Name is another incredible Jim Croce song that is a must hear ✨
Excellent song
The ultimate road trip song.
Will add that one to my list.
@@SaeedReacts. 😎
Awesome. I Got A Name is a great suggestion. I love it.
He was inspired to write this because of the Dear John letters his buddies were getting when he was in the army. Such a kind and talented man lost too soon.
The comparison of the operator and a bartender is brilliant.
🙏🏽❤️
Such a beautiful song from 1972! A very different time that I was blessed to have gone to high school during! We all loved Jim Croce.
Time in a bottle 😊
and "Photographs and Memories"

And don't forget "Rapid Roy the Stock Car Boy"!!!
"Time In A Bottle" is the love song Jim Croce wrote for his baby boy ...his son A.J.

This is perhaps one of, if not the best song ever written.
It is incredible!

"I Got A Name" is a must do by Jim.
Will check it out!
This is the music of my youth and I’m happy to hear these songs of Jim Croce again.❤
Right there with you. Takes you back instantly.
Beautiful music!
I showed my daughter these songs from him when she was 14 she’s 17 now and can play his songs on guitar. She’s a huge fan

Operators were typically female, and it's said this song won a lot of their hearts. I've been wondering for about 50 years now if that story was true.
I declare it truth 😄
I Got A Name, New York's Not My Home, and Lover's Cross are my other faves of Jim's.
Thanks for the recommendations!
After watching this reaction, I can’t wait for you to listen Time In A Bottle. He was so incredibly talented; painting feelings with words and sound.
Looking forward to it.
Dr Hook the song is called Sylvia’s Mother also has a phone Operator in the lyrics. Is really good and is similar but different.
AJ Croce has been on tour the last few years (off and on) doing a show where he does a mix of his own music and his father's. I had the good fortune to see it a while back and it was absolutely incredible. He's primarily a jazz musician so his songs are a different style than his father's, but the same talent is there.
Thanks for sharing that. Hope to check out his music at some point too.
🎼 .. I have loved this song for many years Saeed. Occasionally I will sing this at a karaoke , but it still gets me choked up. Jim had a beautiful songwriting style that stays with me forever. You will enjoy his other great songs. TY 🎼🇺🇲🇺🇲
I really enjoy his style of writing and delivering. Looking forward to more. Thanks for watching.
I talked to the operator quite a few times in the 1970s as a kid, it was just something that little kids did sometimes back then.
@@tileslasher yeah, and I remember like three minutes into your long distance call on a payphone, the operator would cut into your conversation and tell you to please deposit another 50 cents or whatever for another three minutes, and you would wonder just how long the operator had been listening in on your phone call lol.
Jim did not have a bad song... he was brilliant singer/songwriter
Time in a Bottle will hit your heart big time.
That reaction is recorded, but not yet uploaded. Amazing song!
Thanks for those recommendations and for the heads up. This song is amazing so i look forward to more of his music.
An outstanding reaction--thanks so much!
Thanks so much!
Excellent reaction! Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Cold cold! He used to defend his best friend when she talked stuff about him!
