Beautiful car i was a kid in highschool when these and the gta and the grand national and the monte carlo ss came out what a great time for the cars of that era from 1985 to 1988
This car in Red was my very first car when I turned 16 back in 1996. Fun car & seemed very fast back then. Crazy how now compared to my Z06 vette & ZL1 Camaro it would probably feel slower than my regular daily drivers. But still a Iconic car, Wish I would of kept it & put it away in storage way back then
Though not considered powerful by todays standards I still think that TPI intake is the best looking one GM ever made. So much more stylish than any that came after.
Had this same car except mine was brand new and red back in the day. It was one of the faster production cars on the road in its day. Today there are minivans that can beat the "Magnum" Ferrari in a straight line no problem, lol. Crazy but true!
All the comments about how fast cars are now compared to this IROC with the TPI intake. Does it really matter how fast cars are now? Are they as fun to drive when you can't race them in daily driving conditions compared to how fun it would be to drive an '89 IROC that you don't have to get up to high RPM?! I own a 1997 Trans Am and I want a TPI intake on my engine, speed not being a care of mine when I want those lower RPM thrills that third gen guys talk about with their cars. I will stress this all to you, just because something is new doesn't necessarily make it better and we all focus too much on high horsepower numbers to ever be able to enjoy them when daily driving such cars. When all you can do is enjoy brief launches from green lights up to 50 mph before hitting traffic or going too fast in a speed zone, that slower IROC seems to take the cake when you need to go fast in a newer car to really enjoy it the same way at the same torque level! Think about that!
My sentiments- Perfectly. I had a 3:73 gear and a 2500 Stall on my 5.7 and it was a trilling stop light racer. In a way it was more fun then my friend's LT1 and LS1 in normal driving conditions on the street. Unless you feel the torque at low RPM and own a TPI most get lost on paper high HP numbers.
@@scottsmith6571 Eh, I have had my 97 Trans Am for too long. I love the interior styling as much as the exterior, although she now has an LS style Trans AM hood to finish off the "look" I was going for. My biggest complaint is the engine, I resent having to rev up to beyond 5000 RPM before I can start enjoying the car, I just don't drive that way, I keep her below 5000 and my shift limit is actually at 5000. This is where I did research and since I am happy with my current axle gear ratio and don't want to stroke the engine since I drive her in winter, and since I can't throw a truck LS intake on my LT1, I had to look back at the predecessor intake to the LS1 intake, and that was the TPI! I already have a complete TPI intake system off of a '91 Camaro and the TPI base off of a '91 Vette so that I can use the EGR tube. I just need a machine shop to add material to the Vette TPI base and rework the bolt holes so that it can directly bolt on to my LT1 heads and so the ports will be properly aligned. Since the car is reverse-flow for coolant the original coolant passages in the TPI base don't need any modification, they simply won't be used! Short of wanting a 117 or 120 LSA cam with slightly less duration to mimic my stock cam and paired with 1.7 rockers, I should then have the thrill ride I am seeking for a daily driver.
I don't know anything about cars, but couldn't you make this car go a lot faster by adding to the engine like they do in the fast and furious movies? Or would you have to replace the motor with something more powerful?
666mrjimbo just because it has a aftermarket radio doesn’t mean the car ain’t all original. When us car guys say all original we mean motor transmission exhaust etc. radios don’t mean shit.
My car in high school 89 305 tpi 5 speed. I thought i was the shit! Loved my Z28 Btw we all wished the iroc-z came with 350 tpi 5 speed would've been sooo nice.
@@edmelungeon2239 a World Class T5 can handle a lot of torque, I even prefer T5 over T56 because they are lighter. They sell automatics because American buyers prefer them. I’m not as old as what this sounds like but I loved every one of my Camaros. I had a 67z, 72, 76, 81z28, 86 iron z and finally a 1991z350tpi. I miss those cars. They held the road, turned knuckles white & turned heads
