    A simple morning drive featuring a 1982 Camaro Z28 with a few mechanical updates. This car was built to be driven and I do... a lot.
    Here's a list of some of the additions:
    Baer T4 Cross drilled and slotted brakes
    baer.com/1982-1992-F-Body-Cama...
    GM Performance 290 HP 350 c.i. crate engine
    Hotchkis Suspension
    Flowmaster 3" exhaust
    Koni adjustable shocks
    2002 Standard Corvette Rims
    Flaming River quick ratio steering box and leather wheel
    OMP racing seats
    6 point mild steel cage
    6 Speed manual transmission built by Hanlon Motorsports
    ...and the seriously sweet Alpine cassette stereo from the 80's!

      Turnerco Stickers The stupid 305 is the real issue that gave them a bad name.
      If only it spun and acted a bit like fords 302 the Camaro would a lot more respect
      The other issue the 350s are rare in a manual 5 speed but all the 305s were stick which suck

      Technically the second generation F bodies were in production until the early 80's. So from that standpoint only the 67-69 F bodies are "early" models. In reality, any generation designed within 20 years of the first F bodies inception
      is indeed an early model. Being that third gen F bodies started being produced 13 years after the first generations debuted...

    • @bautista2013
      @bautista2013 10 років тому +1

      well actually i was referring to, correct me if im wrong, the "late/early model" term used by the DMV/SAE that a car that is, i belive, 16 years or older is an early model car. So by that i meant that i like this Camaro as it is better than the current gen Camaro.

    People always focus on hp numbers, but never stop to consider how much torque these old motors cranked out. Almost always 80-100lbs of tq more than hp. So i would be willing to bet that this particular iroc is making close to 400lbs tq, probably 370-390lbs tq. Lots of fun.

    • @deathbringer0520
      @deathbringer0520 9 років тому +10

      Todd Rich That and lots of hp doesn't always mean lots of fun. My third gen wasnt putting out a lot of power, but it never failed to put a huge smile on my face. Cruising the hwy or in the hills, it always made me smile. Thats all I want. Cheers! ^^

    • @James7796ify

    I've owned 6 Camaros over the last 40 years or so. As an eight year old I remember seeing my first Camaro in '68, at that point I knew that was the car I was going to drive someday. The first one I wanted, a butternut yellow with black vinyl top '67 in '75, didn't get it by the way. My first was actually a '74 LT I bought in '77. From then on I was hooked. I got my first brand new Camaro in '83, I ordered an '84 Z28 from a local dealer. They didn't have one I liked on the lot. It was a charcoal gray metallic, gray interior, 5.0 liter, 190 HP, 5 speed, JL8 4 wheel disc, posi rear beast. After 5 long agonizing weeks I got the call it was in. I went and picked it up, drove to the nearest gas station, it only had about enough gas to get there not the 30 miles to get it home, no full tanks back then. I hit the open highway rowing through the gears, shifting from 2nd to 3rd I already had the speedo buried, 85 mph back then, I knew this car was going to be fun to drive. :)

    the 290/350 crate is a great motor for a budget build. low, pump gas friendly compression,(8.5) and you can use just about any intake system used on almost any small block chevy with very little work, and only about $2000. with the right intake and fuel delivery, you can expect more than the 290hp rating.

    The roll cage was about $80 of mild steel tubing and three nights after work. I borrowed a friends mandrel bender for the hoop but the rest was bent with a manual press bender in my garage. It's nothing fancy but better than nothing and did make the car noticeably more rigid.

    The 3rd gen Camaro or Trans am don’t get the love they deserve. I got a new TA in November of 1986 about 6 months before I graduated. It had the base 305 Chevy 180hp engine and a automatic. That’s it, but would still run in the high 15’s in the quarter at the local drag strip and although it had 140 mph on the speedo it couldn’t quite reach it but 135 mph was possible every time. I got a state trooper to clock me about 1:00. In the morning that was about 23 years old and was a car guy himself but I didn’t tell him how fast I thought it may go bc I figured my Speedo was off above 100. Anyway after I made my pass by him he made me come look at his radar and it showed 135 mph so for what they were back then which I know is laughable by todays standard , I will always like the 3rd gen f bodies. In 87 when the mustangs with ground effects and 240hp 5.0’s came out
    We all had to take a step back. Even irocs and Ta’s with 5.7 tuned port injection couldn’t do anything against them. If you ran up on a 5.0 with a automatic you at least had a small chance in the quarter.but even if you got the automatic out of the hole they would still come screaming by you at around 65 so if hated mustangs. Anyway, just a little history on the f bodies that a lot of us in our 50’s now used to love.

    saw this car in car craft and loved it. my first build was an 88 camaro that i built a 400hp 355 for. it did everything well, including the tightest donuts. it had 3.08s and a 700r4, i swear it would do 160! i will build another!

    My first car was an 89 RS with the 305 - and this video really makes me miss it. It ran well, and gave me 38mpg ( yes, that's MILES PER GALLON) running from Barstow to Tulsa.

      C T He's got 4 grand in just the brakes. Add in a new crate engine, t56 swap, suspension, roll bar, seats, wheels and tires, etc...I'd say closer to 15 grand.

    How the hell do you get only 290 HP from 5.7 liters?

    • @AutoEdits
      @AutoEdits  10 років тому +15

      It's a smog legal replacement engine...no one said they were good...just better. The LS family of engines changed the game.

    • @SirTrinculo
      @SirTrinculo 10 років тому +17

      290 is alot in a car that stock had 170 - 190

      how much HP are you supposed to get from a 350 engine? cause i have one and want to put in my 79 camaro

    • @AllAroundAshton
      @AllAroundAshton 10 років тому +5

      woodardj93 There's not set number that a 350 makes. It all depends on the engine itself and what vehicle it came out of and what year the engine is, how it was built, etc…... for example, the stock 350 in my 89 Camaro makes 240 HP while a 350 in a different vehicle might make more or less from the factory. if you want to know what the HP rating of that 350 of yours is, find out what vehicle it came out of and what year and google the stats for it. It all depends on how you build it and what you're going to add to the engine to get more horsepower.

    Watching this video brought back memories of my favorite car I have owned. I had a 1982 Z28 Indy Pace car. I wore out the original cross fire injected 305 and built a .060 over 4 bolt 350 with flat-top pistons and a competition cams cam. And I swapped that AWESOME (LOL) cross-fire injection set up for a Carter 4 barrel. It was sweet. Drove it for a total of 15 years and felt like I lost part of my soul when I sold it.

    The tower brace was on the car when I got it in 2005, but the rest of the suspension is right at 1300.00. Most of it came from Jegs and Summitt. Had a crate 5.7 installed in 2005 at the dealer. I only paid 4k for the car and it is still mint. Took almost 2 years to find one in this shape. Lotta junk on the market, but they can be found. This would be my 7th Camaro since I started driving in 1976.

    It wasn't any ONE thing that was hard about the manual swap...it was the twenty little things that were super time consuming! Totally worth it! Just plan triple the time you think it will take. I thought it would take a weekend, it ended up taking two weeks!
