James I like you not being afraid of giving DA his credit. Everyone has to stop being afraid to go against all the negative people that just point out what’s wrong. I heard a statistic from PFF that DA was the best defensive play caller in the NFL last year and PC was the worst offensive play caller so if DA can let KK deal with the offense and if KK is just average this team will be better almost by default.

This is true. At the end of the year DA was the number 1 defensive play caller and sneaky Pete was number 32 for offensive play callers

Yes we all know he’s a great defensive coordinator, he’s just not built to be a head coach, and that’s okay everyone can’t be a coach his ceiling his a coordinator he should stay there. He can’t handle the pressure that comes with being a head coach .

@@user-mw4mp1vx2w I can’t disagree with what you said but some of the best coaches failed at first. If he is head coach material at all he will recognize where his weaknesses are and let KK completely run the offense and not get in the way.

As long as we handle business in the division, then we will be fine. The goal is playoffs, and don't worry about the win/loss total. Klint Kubiak did okay as a play caller in Minnesota with a similar built offense. If he takes what he learned from 49ers then we will be able to compete against contenders like the Lions, 49ers and Rams. Brock Purdy played his best season under Klint!

Multiple 7-9 years but DA goes 9-8 and everyone wants him gone. Yes during the season I was on that bandwagon, but once you take a step back you see he deserves another year or two with an actual OC

TLDR: Chess is actually an excellent metaphor for Football in general, and the Saints in specific, somehow the skrmetta has done it again.
Honestly love the skrmettaphor w/ chess at the end there. assuming most here don’t play high level chess (Based on horsey go L shape) it really is a lot more accurate than you might think.
To be clear this is a massive simplification, I am not a chess GM or anything close to it (and I probably know less about football than chess), but I’m going to give a shot at explaining some of it.
The first thing is the (superficial) similarities between the pieces and players. The King is the piece you have to protect at all costs, and have a whole class of pieces dedicated to screening opposing pieces from getting to him (QB = king, Oline=pawns). You have a piece that is at its best when working through a crowded area and threatening multiple different plays at the same, forcing its way into any defensive gaps (TE=knight). Then you have long range pieces that can cross the field faster than anything else and are always a threat to achieve the win condition (WRs = bishops/rooks). Finally you have a piece that has the most freedom of movement, and is the most powerful attacking piece because it can do anything (RB = queen, this kinda falls apart a bit for more run only RBs but we are talking west coast utility back football anyway so lets just ignore that for now).
The first thing to know is that the highest levels of chess the black pieces have essentially no winning chances, and are playing to draw. At even higher 'perfect' levels, chess is a drawn game. I would argue that football is generally the same. A 0 point drive is (normally) the goal of the defense, and the defense scoring requires someone making a mistake on the offense. Beyond that if everyone on the defense performs the optimal way against every move the offense makes, they will not score.
Next I want to talk about gameplay structure. Chess games are divided into three sections: the Opening, the Middlegame, and the Endgame. These correspond (metaphorically) to the three 'stages' of a down in football: Personnel, pre-snap, and post snap.
Starting from the end and working backwards. In chess your goal is to put the opposing king under attack, in a situation where he cannot escape said attack. In football it is to get into the endzone. The thing that matters here, is that a 10 second long play that goes for a 40 yard touchdown counts the same as a 12 play drive that ends in a 2 yard touch down run by a DT (shout out Khalen Saunders). A 4 move checkmate and a game that lasts over 100 moves each, and ends with three pieces on the board both count the same.
The question is how do you reach that point. Stage one generally determines what kind of play you will see. (Big simplification alert) Generally chess games can be divided into positional games (which will be analogous to the run game) and dynamic (pass). To make it even simpler, that can generally be predicted by white's first move: E4 (king's pawn) or D4 (queen's pawn). Think of E4 as coming onto the field with two RBs and two TEs, where as D4 is a 3 WR set. Can you pass (end up in a dynamic position) from the former and run (end up in a positional slog) from the latter, yes, but its neither the norm or the expectation.
Saints Interlude 1: As skrmetta highlights the key difference between this year and last year is that last year the Saints were a 'D4' offense, whereas now they are transitioning to an 'E4' offense (or at least one that can play 'E4' more than 0 times). Changing personnel groupings completely changes the ideas you have available to you, just as the opening move in chess determines which openings you can play.
As the players/pieces find their positions, things start to become more clear/established. Is all of white's pieces concentrated on attacking on side of the board (bunch set), or are they more spread out (4 wide). This is where prep work comes in. Chess and football both heavily rely on scouting 'game film' (previous chess matches) when it comes to preparing for an opponent. There are right and wrong answers to every offensive maneuver, the question is whether or not you know what that line is. This is where having a diverse set of openings, or doing something completely new can catch your opponent off guard, and perhaps give you an advantage.
Saints interlude 2: Last year the saints offense did not have that 'diverse' set of openings. If Taysom lined up at QB, it was most likely a Taysom run (side note, this is why the few times it actually was a deep ball to Olave or Shaheed, those worked). The entire philosophy of the west coast offense is antithetical to that. The whole point is to be able to do every type of play from the starting formation, which just means instead of having to prep for 1/2 'openings' defenses have to prepare for 5+, which just increases the odds someone forgets what they are supposed to do and blunders into giving the saints a free wining play.
That brings us to the middlegame/pre-snap motion. The middle game is characterized by the set of shuffling moves after the genre of game has been established by the opening, but before the game has been simplified down to a handful of pieces. The gist of the middle game is a lot of shuffling pieces around, and slight positional adjustments to try to create and exploit a weakness in the opposing position. Think of this as trying getting a mismatch in coverage, where a OLB is trying to cover a WR on a go ball or something. If your middlegame is successful enough you will end up in a winning endgame, but that doesn't guarantee victory, nor does entering a drawing/losing endgame guarantee failure.
Saints interlude 3: There is one type of chess game that sort of lacks a middle game entirely: the gambit. These are traps that give the opponent a chance to essentially lose on the spot, but if the opponent knows the correct response will put the player that chose to enter the gambit at a significant disadvantage. Its essentially a knowledge check that is great at beating up bad players, but is almost completely nonexistent at the highest levels. Last year 2/3 of the saint's plays were 'gambits' which is why when they faced a competent defense (see the texans game) they struggled to score. If I know anything about top level chess, it is that you cannot build a consistently successful strategy around playing gambits against top level opposition (unless you are literally just better than everyone else, which the Saints are conclusively not). It works great against Carolina or the Giants, but it will never win you a game against the best teams. On the other hand SF was 3rd in the league w/ 75% of their plays including motion. That is how you create wins through scheme.
That brings us to the endgame. The play has been called, the ball has been snapped, all that is left is to execute. In chess there is a thing called a table base which includes the 'solutions' to any chess position w/ 7 or less pieces remaining. We have solved 7 piece chess, the only question is if the players in that position know that solution and can properly carry it out.
Saints interlude 4: This is why innovation is so important. I daresay the 2017, 3% motion offense has been solved, and that that scheme is no longer putting teams in winning positions. This is why chess openings come and go, and certain moves become trendy or not. Can you still have success with out of vouge styles? Yes. But if you aren't doing anything new, people will know what to expect, and you go from trying to create winning situations to just hoping for a mistake, which isn't a sustainable way to build success.
As great as it is to know Shaheed is running a go route, if you don't have safety help over the top because of the middlegame you better pray Carr messes up or Shaheed trips, because the scheme has put the players in a wining situation.
Saints interlude 5: This is why I love Denis Allen's interview. They are teaching everything from step one. This has two clear reasons in my eyes. Going back to interlude 2, offensively the point of having a deep scheme is to confuse the defense, and try to get them into a losing position. However if you know your fundamentals, even in a novel position those fundamentals will still apply and can lead you to successfully execute a play, even from a schematically disadvantaged position. The second reason is there is still a reason why the games are played. For all of Andy Reed's great scheme and play calling, if the receivers aren't catching the ball it doesn't matter, they still lost to the Lions. I am confident that the new scheme will put the players in more winning positions, but it doesn't matter if they don't execute. That is why I am so glad to hear the word on everyone from Allen, to Hill, to Klint himself talking about details, and precision. We have seen this scheme work in SF, the only question is if the Saints could execute it here.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk. NGL this is one of the most ADHD things I have done, I hope it is coherent, and I would love to know your thoughts on any of it, because damn I am not gonna spend the time to read all of this to edit it, so I doubt anyone actually read all of it.

Playing pro ball don't make you a professional. There was a few Pro Ballers who stunted the growth for the offense this past season. AK suspension, MT cryptic tweets, Winston instagram post, Olave giving up on plays, McCoy and Carr arguing on the field. And that's all on the players and not the coaches, in my opinion. DA isn’t getting a pass, but he's yet to fully gain the respect of a few of the veterans who are supposed to be on the same page with the coaches. I think this season, that aspect will be much improved. WhoDat!!!

They just knew they was set before they saw all that action. That was just 1 of the plays with 2 RBs on the field just like James said. And if you check out Miami and how they used tyreek hill and send him in motion, he never stops running after snap every other WR CLEARS IT OUT HE CUTS INSIDE 30 YARDS FROM THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE KILLING THAT DEFENSE. 😂😂 If they do that with Olave or Speed Shaheed Lord Hammercy. They will murder☠☠ defenses. Just 1 Player can move 5 defenders😂😂 Ion know how Pete got the name Pistol Pete, it should have been "Pop-Gun-Pete"
