      Sad, but still, also a memorial for someone loved, but no longer beside us. My Husband loved this song as much as I loved and still love him ...

    "One day when I was not at home, and she was there all alone, the angels came" That gets me every time. Even as a young teenager, those lyrics struck me when I heard them on the radio. Now, as a widower of 15 years, I know firsthand the sorrow that the song conveys.

    As others have said, no matter how often I hear this song, it still makes me cry. Not for her, but for him (the him in the song, not BG). It’s so hard to get left behind. This is actually the 1st time I’ve seen him in any performance, I just listened to him on the radio. It never occurred to me to wonder what he looked like, lol.

    The chorus "and honey I miss you and I'm being good" gives a pretty good hint there that she's gone and he's being good so that he can see her again in heaven

    Bobby Goldsboro was an American pop & country singer-songwriter from the 60's-70's. "Honey" was his biggest hit but he had a lot of great songs including "See The Funny Little Clown", "Summer (The First Time)", "It's Too Late", "Little Things", "Too Many People", "With Pen In Hand", "Hello Summertime", "Watching Scotty Grow" etc. Some of his songs were performed by other artists such as Brenda Lee, Dolly Parton, John Denver.

    This was my parents song. My Dad loved to sing it to my mom. They were married almost 39 years. Today would have made it 39 years but sadly he missed it by 2 months. He left us around easter.

    In 1968 when this song was on the radio a lot, my parents were going through a divorce. And although this song is about death, not divorce, it always reduced my mom to sobs. (The other song that did that to her was "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" by Glen Campbell.)

    1968 Honey by Bobby Goldsboro, Written by the late great Bobby Russell married to Vickie Lawrence from 1972-1974 he also wrote That's The Night That The Lights Went Out In Georgia for her in 1972.

    Bobby Goldsboro was a major heart-throb for the women back in the 70s. There was a record (45 rpm) that was pressed into the back of a cereal box that you could cut out and play on your record player. It was high-tech back then.

    For a more upbeat song from him in mid 1960’s try “Little Things”. As a side note Bobby Goldsboro called himself as being accident prone. I remember him talking to Johnny Carson listing all the injuries and accidents he had over the years.

    I saw Bobby live in 1973, I think it was, in Arizona. Small, intimate audience. Sat right up and personal with him. He looked exactly like he does in this video. It was great! This has been my favorite song since it first came out way back when! My second favorite song by him is “With Pen in Hand”. Maybe you could react to it. I think you’d like it. It’s like “Honey” only going in the opposite direction to divorce.

  • @donaldthomas7070
    @donaldthomas7070 Місяць тому +1

    If you listen carefully to this song (not difficult, especially since Goldsboro's rendition makes the lyrics very clear), you're left with a number of questions. For example, "where love grew up" & "young at heart" may indicate that Honey was not a young 20-something when "the angels came." OTOH, both Bobby Goldsboro & the composer, Bobby Russell, were in their mid- to late 20s when the song was written & released, &, being sung in the 1st person, the song certainly leaves the impression that Honey "went away" at a young age. Were they young star-crossed lovers, or were they at least pushing middle age?
    With those questions, what can a person do but listen to it again-& again?

    He's thinking back on all the little things that happened with the love of his life, it's funny/sad/heartbreaking how they become the big things when "the angels came" and then his forever partner is gone.

    Mt dad used to whistle and sing this around the house in 1968....i finally figured out why....he lost his mother when he was 18. Makes me cry reminscing about the year 1968, the year of this #1 record "Honey", which was a hit for Bobby Goldsboro in the Spring of 1968, spending five weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop Singles Chart. . Mom, dad and younger brother are all gone, I am the only one left. This is about the saddest damned song there is. It could be about losing a daughter, not just a wife...

    The song is about a young widower who's remembering all the mundane and humorous things his deceased wife did. Those memories of things he might not have reacted to in the best way are now all he has. Such a sad, beautiful song. It sounds corny now, but at the time it was a huge hit.
