Yall really need to see some old vids from the 50's. Back then he was a WILD MAN, that long blond hair and sweat flying, that piano taking a beating and that mad mad energy connecting to the kids going crazy on the dance floor!! He was a wild thing back in the day!!
One of Jerry Lee's more restrained performances. 🙂
No kidding. His piano wasn't even on fire!
The guitarist playing with Jerry Lee here is the legendary Dave Edmunds. An artist well worth checking out in his own right.
Jerry Lee Lewis & Little Richard were beasts on the piano !!!
..."Class of 76"...This was one of Jerry's more reserved performances...he once poured gasoline into the piano and lit it on fire while finishing his set...when he finished he stepped back, bowed and walked off stage, you can see it re-enacted in the movie of Jerry's life...a must see! Always watch a live. performance of Jery Lee.
Because of chuck Berry wanting to be the last performer. Jll was the last performer. Lol
Movie is "Great Balls Of Fire".
I'd say reserved... there are B&W performances where he almost stands on his head while he plays the piano.
He’s older here, which I’m not knocking. I saw him when he was in his 70s, and he was still great. Y’all need to give a listen (and look) to some young Jerry Lee Lewis.
That story is not true. Jerry Lee did not set fire to a piano at that show, or any other show. The 'Great Balls of Fire' movie is not a very accurate portrayal of his life.
Back in the day when we danced all night to music like this - and always went to sleep tired but with a big smile on our face!
One of the true originals - and keeping it a lot more staid than he normally did! A true showman, one of the real bad boys of rock, and still shakin' it into his 80s. He only died a few months ago - RIP.
I recommend finding a video of him from the 1950s, when he was new on the scene and even more frenetic than he is here.
There's video of an early 60s British TV performance, they let the kids crowd around his piano - the video / sound quality isn't great but gives an idea of his frenetic energy. Of course his 1964 "Live at the Star Club, Hamburg" album is off the charts.
Actually the Austin City Limits was one of the best to watch
@@RJ1999x,Yes ,Also Paris 1981 , Barcelona '85 , '89 Melbourne , Australia ,'90 Wembley ' 83 '87 , Frankfurt '82 --- Just a few !!
Jerry Lee was something else for sure, wild, but always amazing. RIP Jerry Lee.
Jerry was definitely an entertainer!
We were entertained!
Jerry was so wild and cool. The man could play the hell of the piano. He rocked the stage.
I was going through my old records and I found I have Peggy Sue and Sweet Little Sixteen on 45. They were my mom's when she was a kid. I have The Platters, Elvis, The Beatles and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. I have Jerry Lee on LP.
My mom named me for the song Peggy Sue.
"The Killer". Jerry Lee was fabulous. I had the pleasure of seeing him live twice. The crowd was just as animated both times.
RIP Jerry Lewis you were a a helluva performer. Thank you for all the fun that you gave.
He was definitely entertaining. His nickname was Killer. He was pretty wild and I remember when he set his piano on fire. He always got the crowds worked up. Thanks for this. 👏👏🇨🇦
Jerry Lee never set a piano on fire. It is a myth.
@@BeatPatrol2024 'Zactly! ..it was jus' the smoke comin' off the keys as he played.
He KILLED it !!
Never seen a better pianist than Jerry. Great voice, presence all good for me. A true pioneer in Rock n Roll history
Yep, they gettin it in the crowd. Lol. This is a legendary performance, with Dave Edmunds on guitar. Jerry was a truly gifted pianist. RIP. ❤
I saw these greats of Rock and Roll when they came to Melbourne, Australia, in the late 1980s. It was one of the most amazing nights of music and nostalgia. Each artist played for about 20 to 30 minutes.
There are video clips of that show in Melbourne 1989, on youtube. Jerry Lee's performance was stunning, that night.
A true legend...always exciting to see this man perform....Ty for this guys
I've never heard this before. I agree with your opinions. It's very obvious that the music back in the day was all about having fun. It seems that that era simply had so much joy. People just having a great time. It's something that somehow we have seemed to have lost. We need to get it back.
Maybe now you guys can understand why us “old fogies” CAN’T STAND what passes for music today.
How CAN we- when we grew up and cut our teeth on THIS?
Glad to hear you mention the fact that rock 'n" roll was meant to be danced to. Disco gets a bad rap but one of its positive characteristics is its danceability which to me in some ways is far more redeeming than more 'serious' music. You should check out Fats Domino and Little Richard as two other great performers who put the piano in the rock 'n' roll spotlight.
Great reaction guys
FYI: Jerry Lee Lewis (muscian), Mickey Gilly (muscian and owner of Gills which was in the John Travolta movie Urban Cowboy), and Jimmyu Swagertt ( evangelical preacher) all are cousins.
Jerry Lew started ( as far as I remeber) started in the 50s
Swagertt had a huge hatred for rock music and he even went so far as to made some very hurtful remarks about the Christmas rock band Stryper. sadly, he found himself is a mess of his own. his confessionary meltdown was legendary.
There's a reason he was called , The Killer. Jerry was one of a kind. A legend
He is a legend!
This a pretty good live performance but I highly recommend one of his early live b&w performances from the 50s. Nice reaction, you are clearly enjoying!
I was waiting for him to set the piano on fire.😄🔥
He would never do that.
If you want to see him in his prime ! Whatch Jerry Lee Lewis - Whole Lotta SHAKIN live in England in 1964 . You will not believe how close the crowd is and how much energy it was ! You’ll love it ❤❤
Fun fact: whole Lotta Shakin goin on was actually written by a man named Dave "Curlee" Williams. Jerry Lee Lewis used to get a lot of his inspiration from african American night clubs and dive bars back in the 1950s. He was so inspired by their Style of music and performing, it’s what helped mold him into the performer he eventually became, a lot of the credit he gave to the black community for inspiring him. He’s my pawpaws cousin ❤ I’ve heard some stories through the years
I saw him play once, in the sixties. He was even more energetic then, if you can believe that. Check out Great Balls of Fire!
He passed away just recently.
Hahaha!! That was so much fun!! Thanks for this!! 😅
Yeah, I'm 80 now and was a young teen when he first came onto the scene. This was a really tamed down version of his original shows. Brings back a certain new vitality to my old bones. I gotta tell ya! LOL Quite the showman in spite of what a lot of parents thought. LOL
GREAT BALLS OF FIRE 🔥
Thank you, thank you! for not interrupting his performance every 10 seconds. I grew up listening to Jerry Lee's music and it never gets old.
He’s The Killer, and he kills it on the piano and entertaining the crowd!❤
He is cousin to Mickey Gilley, who you did a reaction to already.
I love Mickey gillie. Was just listening to him the other day.
@@TheAdventuresofTNT Another cousin who was also a pianist was evangelist Jimmy Swaggart, who famously "fell from grace".
@@757optim he did indeed, but he is still singing and playing the piano today. I live in Baton Rouge and see him at his church and he is amazing even at his age...
@@debbiel.1655 Glad to hear it. There is redemption for everyone.
this man gets me out of my seat!!! Love this music. He is a blast from the past!!!
It's a bottle of fire brother brother it's a bottle about a fire brother
I got to see him live in the sixties. He was unbelievably good!
I love this clip. The intensity of this performance moves me to tears. Great to see you guys enjoying this so much. Greetings from Amsterdam.
You should react to him doing this song when he was younger in the 50's. He just ROCKED it out!!
I remember seeing Jerry Lee Lewis as the headliner in a Rock-and-roll show in Norfolk, VA in 1961 when I was in the Navy (big mistake). He took his jacket off and tossed it into the crowd. One lady in the audience said, "Take it all off." He said, "You stick around for the next show and you'll see more." A large segment of the audience applauded. He blew the doors off the auditorium. BTW, in this show was Ruth Brown, The Coasters and others I don't remember. Needless to say "The Killer" was the most memorable.
thankyou for featuring these classics... let us continue to enjoy them
I love seeing y'all smiling and moving to the music, that's what it's all about!
Love my Jerry Lee. ❤️ He was the BEST! This is a restrained "elder statesman" type of performance and he still has amazing energy. He hit the scene in 1957 but, to me, he was at his peak in the late '60s. Miss him!!
THE KILLER! Jerry Lee Lewis is an absolute ROCK&ROLL icon!
I saw Jerry Lee Lewis in 1988 and 1998 -- The Killer made the piano scream -- puts on a good show
I saw Jerry Lee Lewis in 1976 with my Mom and sister at a dinner club in Southwest Ohio. It was fantastic. My sister and I got the chance to see him again at a casino in Indiana in the early 2000's and he still put on quite a show. He is a first cousin to Mickey Gilley and evangelist Jimmy Swaggert.
You have got to listen to Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley Melody! They are second cousins, and are both exceptional, piano, players, and performers in general
I can't remember who he opened up for back when they all toured together in the 50's...Elvis or Chuck. But he lit his piano on fire and said "follow that!!"
That never happened. It's a myth.
Jerry Lee is a Rock OG! 😎
I switched to independent groups in the 90's. Lot of dancing, jumping, friendly mosh pits. It was all about having a good time. Reel Big Fish, Catch 22, Bad Fish, Social Distortion, Less Than Jake. Punchline etc.
Check out his performance of this song done live on the Gary Moore TV show - when he was much younger.... You can see why parents in the Fifties were saying, "What's wrong with these kids, listening to music like this?"
This is the man that set his piano on fire and kept playing to upstage Chuck Berry....
Have you done some Little Richard?? Talk about rocking out!!
Yup
Ah, a hometown musician for me..I was born/raised/live in Shreveport, Louisiana..Jerry Lee Lewis, along with his fellow famous musicians, his cousins Mickey Gilley (famous country star) and Jimmy Swaggert (famous preacher/televangelist), grew up in Ferriday Louisiana..all three were born with genius musical talent and all three could play piano beautifully. I believe only Jimmy Swaggert is still alive and he still plays piano beautifully. Their life/back stories from abject poverty to fame is quite the read and a few books and movies with details are interesting if you wanted to dig deeper.
“The Killer” Gone but not forgotten.
When I was kid I go to see him at Lanier Music Land in Gainesville GA, my father's cousin owned the place and we got to see concerts for free. That night Jerry Lee threw the piano seat into the crowd!
back in the days when they had fun doing this. thanks. love your videos.
"The Killer" Jerry Lee Lewis.
Don't ever stand behind that piano bench, he's been known to stand up and kick that bench out of the way and jam that thing.
So hot in its time (late 50s), that now, 60+ yrs later, "Whole lotta shakin' goin' on" is still widely used as a general pop culture catch phrase (in digital media, TV, news reports, movies, etc.). The power of music.
He wasn't nicknamed the Killer because he played by the rules. Someone said that he played the piano with every pointed appendage on his body except one, and using that one would have gotten him arrested. Believe it or not, he was evangelist Jimmy Swaggart's cousin, and Jerry Lee's sacred music was as powerful as the secular stuff.
Yeah, old JLL was my mommas crush. Her song from him was "Chantilty Lace"
An original. He and Little Richard were the epitome of Rock/Roll. Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart are his first cousins. See if you can find a performance of he and Little Richard. Don’t know if they ever had a major concert together. Put on your Colombo Trench Coats.
True classic in every sense of the word…👏👏👏
i spent a lot of my childhood in his neck of the woods, even knew people who had played or sang with him in the early days
Guess I was 13 first time I heard this song - still cant sit still when I hear it.
My stepfather got to see Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley two of the best rock and roll and country western piano players ever they both did their sets and at the end for the encore they push the pianos so they face each other it was three song set for each six songs all together last song was Great Balls Of Fire where both litter pianos on fire as they pounded out the song, that would've been some show.
I'm sorry, but I don't think that ever happened.
Legendary family… all cousins… Preacher, 2 hi key tonk singers MIKEY GILLEY
Reminds me of my uncle. Literally rock and roll, 4 4 beat, rocks and rolls. Have fun and dance 😁 rip unc
Check out his performance of this song on the Ed Sullivan Show, looks like maybe in the late 60s. Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry turned popular music upside down!
He used to set the pianos on fire and play while the inside was burning. He was WILD!!!! He is from the same area of Louisiana I’m from.we have always called him Killer!!!!!!!Jerry Lee’s cousins were Rev. Jimmy Swaggart and Mickey Gilley. All three were phenomenal piano players❤❤❤
Love the reaction. I hope you find a video of him in his younger, wilder years. I also hope you check out the movie about his life. Dennis Quaid does a great job playing him.
One of the architects of rock and roll. The Killer. RIP
YO!! So good to see you two boppin' to this by Jerry!! I think the venue was in Rome in 1989...I saw the identical show, with one or two changes of performers, in Melbourne, that same year...before the Rome concert which was entitled LEGENDS OF ROCK AND ROLL...Jerry performed a whole lot more in Rome, than he did in Melbourne...This version was FORTY TWO years after the release of the original [1957]...AMAZING!! I am 85.5 years 'young'...born 1938. I was READY for what was gonna hit me around 1955, and I'm STILL READY!! I can burn-up the floor...BELIEVE ME!! Thanks for this great track, I'll be checkin' in more!! My BEST to you both...KEEP ON!!
SORRY...I should have said THIRTY TWO years...
the great tomato Blues album... you should love this album it might even change your listening habits forever. .
Lady, gotta love your reaction and energy, how can anyone just sit and not move. This is Rock N Roll
I so love your reaction the wild man of Rock And Roll!!! You do a great sit down dance!!!
At 54 uears old Jerry Lee was still a complete badass.
there was one even better when he set the piano on fire, he was really a performer.💚🎹
That never happened.
There was a town which scheduled Elvis Presley (who was thought a bad influence of the young) to play. The promoter said he would get Jerry Lee Lewis instead and the town fathers said Elvis would be okay. Jerry was a bad boy. Among other things, he married his 13 year old cousin.
He was scheduled to performed before Chuck Berry once. He played "Great Balls of Fire" after pouring gasoline on the piano and igniting it. Upon leaving the stage, he told Berry, "Follow that"
You all are hard workers. Every time I look at a reaction video you guys are there. Keep it going!
He had to open for Chuck berry and did that but lit his piano on fire...as he walked off he said follow that
Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues, is an incredible song by Jerry Lee
Part of the 1990's grunge and depressing music was the disenfranchisement after 12 years of Reagan/Bush. A lot of the (American) younger population was tired of the old trickle-down nonsense. That's what I found from talking to a lot of people. Thank you for doing this song by "the Killer!"
Jerry & Little Richard SOUL TO THE PIANO & VOCALS🎹🎙
Ya'll should have seen his performances when he was younger. He IS the KILLER!!!!
I gotta admit I like these 2 how they get on. They're calm and funny and just being themselves.
They called Jerry "The Killer" for a good reason. The guy is an old man here and shredding that piano!
The pride of Louisiana. Not many could light up a piano like him.
He set his piano on fire playing Great balls of fire.. lol that pissed off Chuck Berry. LMBOff
Lot of energy for an old dude. One of the greatest
Loved the Killer all of my life and love you two enjoying this. Subscribed
Check out GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!! he is a master pianist...
Yeah man!!!! This is premium rock and roll!
Thank you very much for this song. Very nice!
Jerry Lee, Great Balls Of Fire! Fun reaction !
My guitar hero Dave Edmunds on guitar! He sings rockabilly and was the lead singer in the legendary group Rockpile.
I got to see him a few years ago. I really wasn’t excited about at the time. He was old and frail looking. But once he sat down and started to play, I was. I’m really glad I got to see the Killer live. He gave it his all.
there was no one like jerry lee, no one, he was the best,
Jerry Lee had the bull by the horns and was riding it.!!!!!!!! I remember when this came out it was jaw dropping.
Thanks for the video you guys. Love Linda 78 and still lovin it.
