Coach Julia, I could not be more grateful for your tutorials. Skating was my childhood dream, but we were "too poor" until I was told I was "too old" to start at 9 and 10. I am now 40 and accidentally discovered there is a whole world of adult beginners and adult competitions, not to mention shows and theater on ice! I have now been skating for 3 months. Im so thrilled to have found this new world, and to have your videos to help me bring that love and passion to life when I cant afford a private lesson. These tutorials are perfect for beginners trying to teach themselves the basics, and trying out the sport before investing much expense. Thank you for making learning this beautiful art form so much more accessible to the average Jane Doe. Much respect, and many many blessings.
Started adult senior classes at LA Kings Ice in Los Angeles. Fun! The padded shorts help build confidence. We r all in 40s-50s. Love this practice video. Thanks! . Please add. T stops. Back & front blade /edge tips
I absolutely love your videos! I am 25 and been figure skating for 5 weeks now. My class is really crowded and the coach can't explain things in a good way. She always talks so fast and nobody understands what to do. So I watch your videos and practice it on my own and my coach just says if I am doing it right or wrong. It really helps me to understand her tasks better. 😂
OMG, congratulations, the way you explain every part of each movement in all your videos is priceless, specially for adults trying to learn how to skate ;) Your tutorials are incredibly helpful, keep it up!
My instructor started me on these a couple months ago even though they're probably a bit advanced for where I am in my skating (Adult/Basic 5 mostly, in the Learn to Skate USA progression--with forward continuous edges being at Free Skate 1). My main issue has been the outside edges, specifically, holding sufficient momentum to complete the half circle without having to put the other foot down for balance. Oddly enough, I do better on the inside edges. Instructors tend to shuffle as we go from one eight week block of classes to another and we've got a new instructor now who is working us on different stuff--review of basics for me, which is fine and probably needed since I've been neglecting a lot of that while working on new stuff--so I'm kind of on my own as I continue with the new techniques. I generally get four sessions to practice over the weekends--two of them in the evenings where the rink has the main lights turned down and "disco lights" going. I'm not about to try spins and turns (other things I'm working on at this level) in that confusing lighting so that's when I do practice with consecutive edges. The afternoon sessions have regular lighting (and are generally less crowded) so I work the spins and turns then.
I’m so excited to try these exercises, I’m actually just learning edges and struggling to hold my LFO. Thank you so much for uploading these tutorials, incredibly well explained, and now I’ve learned what to do with my arms 😅 looking forward to the next video ⛸💙
Thank you for being very in depth, a lot of skating tutorials just “show you it” without any real explanation. I love the way you explain things! Keep up the good work 💗💗
I love your channel, and all of your video's. I just like Bill Montgomery who comments below, have started skating with a coach, and I am 71. This sport is great, and with practice and good coaches, and advice we can all achieve great results. Your content is so helpful because you break it all down into parts. This is such a great way of showing us skaters how it's done correctly. So a big Thanks to you Julia!
Thank you so much for such a clear tutorial 💕. I always struggling on dont know what to do with my arms 😢 can't wait to try these in my next ice skating session.
Hi ! From Korea! 🙌🏻 I can't have lessons for 1years because of Covic-19, so I really missed figure skating 😭 Your tutorial is so clear so I can recover basic skills easily :) It's so helpful!! Thanks a lot teacher !! 💕💕💕
I started learning it in July last year. Edge trainings are challenging to me - especially outside edge. I can't tell whether it is rented skates that caused it because they're worn, or my skills are still too beginner. Your videos help a lot for an adult learner like me. Many thanks 👍
I saw you film this and I loved this Tutorial so much! When I was skating with Jane I was impressed of how you make these videos for people who need help.
Hi coach, today is all about outside and inside edges, again. Thank you for this video to get me in the right frame of mind for going to practice this afternoon. Have you done a video yet on Ice Dance 1 skills? I'm searching for videos on skill A) forward consecutive outside swing rolls to a count of six. I appreciate you and all the work you put into putting these videos up for us.
love your tutorials! there are not much figure skating videos, I guess it is not that popular (which I don't understand 'cause its amazing) but you tell sometimes things that my coach didn't tell, so thanks to you my progress is faster than when I wasn't watching your videos. also you are very nice to look and to listen at and that is also an important thing :) please keep going, (I don't understand why you have only 500 likes btw) xx from the Netherlands
Coach Julia, your tutorials are so good and easy to follow. I love it, even though I am too old for skating, I believe that I will manage some spins thanks to you. :) Your students are so lucky! ❤
Once again, great tutorial! My local ice rink re-opens to the public next week so I can't wait to try those exercises. I've started skating pretty late in my life (as a 29 year-old), but it's been my favorite activity ever since! One question: do you have any good off-ice exercises routines you would recommend for adults? I especially need to start working on my flexibility, but all the tutorials I've found were pretty advanced :(
I started figure skating 9 months ago and I am 28. I was having trouble with my flexibility too. I go for adult gymnastics one to two times a week during the open gym for adults and work on my flexibility there (i have no gymnastics background and i am poor with flexibility). The facilities available there help me be consistent and the instructors help watch over for form and safety. Hope this helps. I would also love to see an off ice workout video from her.
It is never to late to begin Figure Skating! Congrats on getting started. I love the idea of uploading some strength and flexibility exercises! I will definitely try and get somethings together for you on that soon. 🙂
I'm in my 60's and haven't skated since my late 20's. Anyway of all the videos out there I am using yours for getting back in there. Not trying to be a figure skater of course and have hockey skates with a goal to just recreational skate (with some form) and my question is this, obviously hockey players don't put there arms out there when they skate, at some point are the arms out there necessary or are they using their stick for balance? appreciate the work you put into this. thanks.

Could you share tips on skating on a forward and backward outside edge?. I have foot pronation and my blades were mounted to help correct it but I still struggle to get onto and hold the edge.i feel like I am going to fall over sideways if I tilt my blade over more.
Well, working hard on mastering your outside edges should help you improve! You may also have some foot pronation issues that cause your feet to lean in. Arch supports can help fix that.
Do you mind explaining maybe in physics term that why the hands and free leg move like these. I have trouble remembering it but if I could understand it better it might be really helpful. (Apologies from an un-athletic scientist.)
This video is very helpful! I really enjoy practicing basic consecutive edges but the arms always confuse me. So forward outside and inside is same arm same foot. What about backwards edges? Ps I would love to see a video on that as well! ❤
Thank you Julia, your videos are always so helpful. My right foot is pronating and i can't get the outside edges. I'm trying 3 turns, but I still can't do it. Do you have any tips for that? Can you strengthen pronation, or is it a medical problem?
Coach Julia, I love your videos, they're supremely helpful! What is the difference between these forward edges in this video which seem to be the same as the Freeskate 1 LTS level, and Forward Swing Rolls which appear in the Adult 5 LTS level? Thanks in advance!
very needed! Thank you for the excellent job of instruction and breaking down each move! really clear and enjoyable tutorial! I do have a question on this exercise - when doing crossover or the half swizzle pumps around the circle, the arms are always hugging the circle right? Like you are slightly facing towards the center of the circle. But in this exercise, on the first 1/4 circle, the arms are actually hugging the opposite - outside of the circle, while on the second 1/4 circle the arms change to hug the circle. Can I ask why there is a difference, and how the arm position helps with the edge. Thanks a million again!!
Great question! The change in arm position, if done properly can help your upper body maintain the curve and get you around the 1/2 circle. It can be done with stationary arms, but requires an advanced level of control to accomplish. And, since we are doing edges on a line, we have to switch our arms at some point, and it is easier to switch them at the top of the circle rather than waiting for the axis and switching feet, circle, and arms all at the same time.
@@CoachJulia Thank you so much for the detailed explaination! I also tried it at the rink tonight, it makes perfect sense and works magic! :)) In addition, I feel the change of arm positions kind of makes the body twist a bit half way and creates a momentum to help with the curve for me. Thank you so much for such a nice tutorial!
when i was practicing outside edges in my last lesson, my coach noticed my feet sort of collapsing back on to an inside edge, he said the laces might have been too loose. i redid them as tight as i could but i still found i was dropping onto an inside edge when trying to go round a circle for outside edges, do you have any tips for this please?
This is so helpful! Thank you for making the video! I have a question about lifting the hip - I want to keep the knee of my gliding leg bent (so that I feel more stable and in control), but that feels opposite to lifting my hip. So am I suppose to bend my knee less? Thanks!!
You should only have your knee very slightly bent. I am sure it feels safer, but it doesn’t allow for your body to be lined up ideally. So I would definitely recommend you work on straightening it. Good Luck! 😁
Firstly thank you -I love your tutorials -as someone else said, they really help between coaching sessions (in Australia!) when I’m on my own. I’m not sure if you can help with this, but I seem to make more of a half heart just at the end of my inside edge before I’m back at the line ready to switch feet. I can’t work out why I’m curling it and unless I cut that edge short of the line I end up pointing a little away from where I’m going by the time I’m switching feet. Any sense of what I might be doing to cause this?
It sounds, from your description like you may be leaning deeper onto your edge as you approach your center axis line, which would make your circle tighten up. It is hard to say what the source is, it could be in your hip extending out to far beyond your edge, it could be your upper body rotating to hard. Try to stay really lifted through your hips and upper body as you progress through the edge.
Whenever I try to do the swizzles or push off of one foot, my skates slip all over the place and I can't get any friction at all. What am I doing wrong or is it just because my skates are shitty? They're newly sharpened and it's still happening. Any advice from anyone is welcome, thanks in advance
Hmm, do you know how deep of a hollow your blades were sharpened at? That usually sounds like a dull skates problem, but could also happen if you need a deeper cut. Have you seen my video about skate sharpening? It is in the boot and blade care playlist.
@@CoachJulia thanks for the response. I've seen the video you mentioned, but I live in Germany where ice skating is not as popular, so I bought my skates from a general sports store and they sharpened it there without asking me how I wanted them to be sharpened. When I have my skates right under my body I don't slip, but as soon as I try to put them off center, they slip...
Hi. Guessing you figured out the slipping issue, but if you're stuck...I started skating 3 months ago. At first my blades were fine at a 1/2 in hollow, but now that I'm getting more comfortable with my edges, I am noticing some slip as I increase my lean into the ice with the increased momentum and think I'm ready for a little bit deeper cut, which will increase the grip the edge has on the ice. Best wishes!
@@SassySkater Hi thanks for your response, I really appreciate it. I fixed the slipping problem by simply showing the people at the ice rink my sharpened skates, we all had a good laugh and they actually sharpened them. I didn't know first, that they offered a sharpening service at the ice rink. And I also didn't know, the sharpening at the store was sooo shitty :)
@@Namoraslife i hear ya. My store also did not even tell me they offered a complimentary free first sharpening. Thankfully I had them sharpened at my rink before setting foot on the ice in them! My goal is to compete as an adult at worlds and possibly make it a profession and skate in various shows. Coaching eventually would be amazing as well!

Just saw another tutorial on edges and there i saw just the opposite arms 🤔
Well, there are different methods of teaching this, but with 14 years of coaching under my belt, and a master rated mentor, this is the method I use and find the most helpful for my students
I don't know why, but I'm scared of outside edges
A lot of people are, I think it is because you have to lean away from your free foot, which means you could fall to the side.
You look like the girl from Sabrina Teenage Witch
Coach Julia. I'm not happy for about your figure skating practice for your lessons? I'm can't? I'm sorry? Thank you for your understanding?
Flat edges 😏
