I have Deore 1 x 11 on two of my bikes these days. I confess to installing an XT shifter, probably more for looks than real performance improvement. It's all working great. I rotate my chains to even out the wear, which should be low anyway because the cassette is all-steel. The only issue I had was a bit of skipping in the middle sprocket. Turns out I put the chain and quicklink on backwards without noticing. Swapped it around and it's all good. Cheers

You hit the nail on the head here. Ive used my old 11 speed XX1 with a 28 tooth upfront on a trail/enduro bike. Super light and i never do high speed flat burns.
Thank you for this video. I have now upgraded my ~2015 rig to be 11-51T. I had just assumed that the bike was too old to be able to run a 51. Keep up the good work. Cheers from Sydney, Australia
I have M5100 on two bikes. Works great. Also, even tho the cassette is on the heavy side vs XT, I like that it is naturally colored and it looks like new even after many, many miles after proper cleaning, vs say a black anodised SX/NX. Yes, there are no-window shifter options.
Totally agree, this is what I was commenting with a friend recently, and it is also very budget friendly for people who already had 1x11 before and want to get more range. I previously had an SLX M7000 1x11 with a 30T chainring at front and 11-46 on the back. When this got released got myself a new SLX 12 speed rear derailleur and 11 speed 11-51 Deore cassette. As far as I know the chain is the same in both old SLX and new Deore 11 speed, the SLX rear mech has technically the same range and "unsurprisingly" the SLX 11 speed shifter worked really well with the 11 speed Deore cassette. For around $100 I upgraded to have more range even comparable with some 12 speed drivetrains out there, I could move to 32T on the front and I am even considering moving to a 34T just like you say, because of that 51T sprocket, it is very friendly for climbing.
@@thedownunderverse that's right :) indexing works perfectly. I am running an SLX 11 Speed drivetrain with a new Deore 11-51 11 speed cassette and an SLX 12 Speed rear mech, you can see how it works here ua-cam.com/video/dcXBDU72IPU/v-deo.html. The only "downside" you can't even see in the video with the bike mounted on a stand is some gear in the middle (I think it's the 5th or 6th) require slightly higher cadence in order to downshift properly indexed and that's probably because I am running a non boost crankset on a boost frame, because I had I full sus (non boost), had a crash and had to replace the frame, so I swapped my parts into the new frame and as a result, the chainline is slightly out of place. Even so it still works pretty much fine as you can see.
I am running 11 speed Di2 on my Levo and it is brilliant. My biggest issue was finding Boost Hubs like the Shimano FH-M8010-B 148 rear hub to run NON Micro Spline 11 speed cassettes.
I have this 11-51T combined with 30T chainring. I do not like a big step between 18T and 15T cog. I would consider CS-M7000 11-46T instead for an 11 speed drivetrain.
Can't thank you enough for this great review....really helpful information... It saved a huge pile of money for me on a new bike setup with very little real sacrifice....for me anyway. Really really appreciate the real bike information. Keep up the great work... Honest , real rider review and information...this is what the internet was made for. Cheers
While upgrading to deore 5100, keep in mind that 5100 derailleur is made for 11-51 cassette only, and will not work good with smaller cassettes. 5120 derailleur actually works with 11-51 cassette, and if you plan to use different cassettes on the same bike, 5120 is better choice. But again, it will not work great with cassettes smaller than 11-42.
I use M5120 with 11-42 in 2x setup with 46/34t chainrings on my hybrid commute bike. Cheap and works really well. I live in a very hilly area so I got the range and the speed i need with 2x. My shifters also happens to be the one without the optical display and It looks so tidy. One of these "New Deore" missing in this video is the M4120. Basically the same RD as M5120 but without the clutch and cost only around 35 bucks here. Half the price of M5100/5120
Your content is pure gold my friend. Keep the good work on!! Deore is awesome and cheap for the quality it deliver. I run a deore 10speed whithout clutch but i tned strenghtened the tension of the spring, whith a smooth sunrace 11/46 nd ceramic alloy pulleys whith 12 and 14t awesome setup and cheap.
Let me first say I really like your content. You allways have a video about whatever project occupies me at a certain time❤. I few years ago I made the 1x11 conversion with the 5100. Superglad to be rid of the frontderailler!
I have used the M5100 groupset (minus the cranks and chainring) which I got for £120 on Ebay for over a year. It has served me well but the cassette has developed a fault I noticed recently. Where the the largest 3 sprockets join to the spider, the rivets have come loose allowing the 3 large sprockets to slide around a bit, as if the rivets have lost their tension or deformed (most likely the former). I have done some steep climbs occasionally but the cassette hasn't seen a a large amount of use (still on my first chain) and I don't think I'm super hard on the bike, it's a standard bike not an E-bike. It's also on the heavy side which is to be expected from a budget steel cassette and I thought it would last a while but sadly not, maybe I got unlucky. The low gears make a noticable clicking noise and are probably robbing some power on the climbs so it is a good time to upgrade to a lighter cassette. The rest of the groupset hasn't caused any problems except when I bent the deraillieur, although that was more to do with the fact I was trying to put a chain back on in the middle of a dark raining field when I was drunk lol (my dad has gotten me into bad ways). It was easy enough to bend it back though.
One thing that caught me out when installing the RD-M5100-SGS 11sp derailleur was the little tab that is supposed to sit between the b screw and hanger.
I use an XT M8000 11 speed shifter with an XT 8100 12 speed derailleur, and a 5100 11 speed cassette. SRAM 11 speed shifters work fine also, but only in 11 speed, not 10 speed. I've run a "SRAMANO" 11 speed drivetrain on several different bikes. Another trick: You can put XT ball bearing pulleys on Deore derailleurs.
@@MnMExtreme , any available 11 speed chain. I used KMC for a long time, but lately the Shimano CN-LG500 11-Speed Chain is only $23, so I have been using that one.
@@watertankhikesInterestingly I plan to do that same conversion, currently I have 1x11 with shifter and front derailleur and xt m8000. How does the 11-51 cassette work with the XT M8100 rear derailleur?
I was one of the first guys I know to get Shimano 1x12 xt. The shops first time with it was putting it on my bike. I love it. I liked the tip about lowering clutch to speed up shifts.
Just got a shimano 11 speed with a sunrace 11 to 50 cassette and front chain ring for $145.00. I think 11 speed drivetrains are the steel of the d cade right now.
if only 5100 was available any where at MSRP..I want to upgrade my 2x10 to 1x but dont want to change my HG hub/relace etc, so my shimano options : -12 speed 6100/7100/8100 derailleur with chinese 11x50-52T cassette => seems like its working nowhere as good as full shimano drivertrain. -11 speed 5100 not available -1x11 from previous generation...I think I'm going this way with M8000 11-46T cassette/derailleur/shifter. im loosing about 10% of range but less expensive and better quality deore XT parts, double down shift and it will match nicely my deore XT rear bub and deore xt brake cakipers and levers with I-spec II. I just need to decide if I'm losing 10% range at top end, bottom end, or split, depending on chainring. still have some concern about the chainline on 1x but I'll take the single lever, cleaner cockpit, evenly spaced gears that are all usable, plus the fact 2x10 is basicly just like 11 speeds because usually you will use the front derailleur just once when going from lowest gear to the highest or the other way around
Congratulations for the channel! Very nice suggestions! I'm from Brazil, and with our bad economic situations, this is a good way to get a new range speed!
@@FernandoHaddadMinistro ia have all that 12 speed groupset doere on my cheap wheels. I can get the XT M8000 for free. My only concern is if I can use my microspline freehub on the M8000
I have this on my XC bike. The rivets on the large gears gets loose over time. Permanent threadlocker (red) fixed it... The freeplay on the freehub is also an issue, rattles on small bumps but not affecting ride and shifting quality.
How do you fix with thread Lock? Just apply on the Rivets? ALL of then? inner or outer side? or both? about the problem with the freehub.. do you hear some noise? i feel that It is kind of loose, but not sure from where, happens mainly after vibration/bumps
@@padutra clean your casette first, leave it to dry then apply the red threadlocker on the web revits that connect the wide and narrow cogs. Just get back to this comment when you're done so we can have testimonials about this issue and solution. Edit: make sure you use the red threadlocker (permanent)
Just go 10spd it's even cheaper than 11/12, and you can get them in the same gear range (now) and you're never going to notice one less cog someplace in the middle ranges.
@@talldude8155 for shimano yes (because they need to artificially preserve a 'progression' for their groupset upgrades). But 3rd party cassettes like Sunlite have them available.

I upgraded my fat bike with the Deore 5100 set. Love it. Works perfect for older Shimano hub group set upgrades. People don’t know about it though because Shimano uses a confusing number scheme.
VERY happy to have found this. I'm refreshing an old bike with 11 speed XT drivetrain and SLX brakes. The 51T will do nicely. I thought 46T was a good deal.
Great Video. Great arguments pro 11by Deore. Love Shimano Deore stuff. Resently built a custom commuter Ghost lector 5800 1by11 6100 and brakes deore groupset. Works just amazing.
This will make a LOT of new bikes in 2022 a lot cheaper ..... or a lot better than the SX and Deore stuff we are getting now. And also a lot easy to upgrade the vast majority of people’s bikes ..... Thank the heavens .... well done Shimano. 11 speed is just not as fiddly than 12, much cheaper and much easier to live with ..... nice. Just sort the delivery issues out now 😬🤔
Danny, curious if that 11-51t 11 sp. Cassette can be Modified to fit an Old Standard 8-10sp. Shimano Cassette Body ( or IF the Old Shimano Cassette Body can be Modified to Fit that 11-51t 11 sp. Cassette, or if BOTH can be Modified to Fit one another [say "Machine" down the interfacing surfaces of BOTH the Cassette AND Freehub Body])? Also can that particular Deore RD for the 11-51t 11 sp. Cassette be used with Shimano 11sp. 105 Brifters? (Maybe this 1x Mod. can be used for a Gravel, Touring or Road Bike [for a Clyde]). Cool Video and Excellent Advice btw. Danny!
I fitted the 5100 casette on my old 8-10 speed hub FH-RM33 and it works like a charm. No need for any modifications on the hub body or anything complex. Very happy with this deore groupset. Cheers :) edit: Also i get absolutely no chain drop when backpedalling(48 mm chainline in front). Doesn't get any better than that :)
I made conversion from 2x11 to 1x11 recently. I kept my M8000 RD SGS and shifter, bought new chain HG601, cassette 11-51T and installed 32T xt m8000 narrow/wide chainring. Everything works fine, I shift while I ride uphill 10-20% of gradient without any problems, even if many youtubers said that combination will never work. THey were wrong, and I am happy with that.
what 11-51T cassette did you get ? good quality non shimano cassettes are so expensive its the price of a complete groupset. chinese cassettes shifting quality seem to be no match for pure shimano groupset. seems like best value are shimano entry level Deore cassettes did you use the Deore CS-M5100 cassette ? Also, why is the SGS derailleur rated for max 46T cog it it goes up to 51T ? did it take lots of adjustments on the derailleur ?
@@soliranje oh I was right about to pull the trigger on full Deore XT M8000 groupset with race face NW chanring but now you got me thinking..It kind of makes sense that the SGS long cage version is able to fit a larger cog than the GS which already fits the 1x11 11-46T cassette. the additional 5 cogs (~10% more range) could be well worth the additional weight (200g) from it. I think the RD M5100 SGS deraillleur would still be a better match plus it has the larger pulleys and even cheaper but its only available on alibaba...never tried it, I dont want to wait for more than one month and receive the wrong part!
@@geemy9675 I believe too that m5100 sgs will be better match, but XT M8000 SGS does the job really good. When it comes to additional 200g, it does not mean a lot to me because I don't race. I just take my bike and enjoy riding in mountains eith my friends during weekends.
Yes I absolutely LOVE my 11-51.... My original conversion on my first MTB was 1x10 11-36... the range of my new MTB w 1x11 is insane. Definitely recommend. Edit; 6:05 beautiful... I love it too man haha.
@@amirislami9876 dude, do it. The range is still all there for the most part, if I didn’t have my new bike I would DEFINITELY swap my 11-36 to 11-51 on my Diamondback.. best wishes bud!
Mr. SickBiker that was a very informative video, and I thank you for showing it. It changed my mind to stay with my 11sp, but upgrade just my cassette to the 11-51 and the required Deore RD-5100 SGS derailleur. I do have one question if you have time to answer. With my XT 11-46 set up, I was using a SRAM PCX1 chain with a SunRace cassette. Which chain do you recommend so I may get the best shifting possible or which did you use? Thank you again
I got an after market 11/46 cassette for my 10 speed deor and I went with a 28 tooth chainring which I think gets me close to most 12 speed setups as far as the lowest gear capacity giving me the ability to ride much steeper climbs compared to my replaced 11/42 with a 30 tooth chainring . The total cost with cassette ,chain ring and new chain was $ 78 . The only problem is I do drop the chain back pedaling in the 2 biggest cogs but that only may come into play with a track type stand steep technical climb . Chain angle I guess plays a part with the smaller ring and the bigger cassette but other than that it has done well for 8 months on some hard terrain in the high desert and the bike is a hardtail which the name states its hard on equipment . Another thing is the chain does stay on much better than the 11/42 Shimano cassette were in very few cases I would drop a chain . I have also have seen some friends breaking chains on there 12 speeds pedaling at maybe higher tork and going OTB which I find concerning and wonder if this could be more of the problem for the 12 speeds and the cain they use .
What is wrong with the Shadow Mount system. Why did Shimano go back to a more conventional mounting to the hanger? The Shadow Mount kept the derailleur father out of the way and I had many fewer bent derailleurs and derailleur hangers during crashes.
XC'ing too. For me the most annoying thing about those 11-5X is the jump from 15 to 18... I run 38T in the front. The only way to resolve this is to go for 11-4X + 36T, or just upgrade to 12s already...
I’m also a Cross Country racer, but this time I can’t relate with your opinion. I’m running on a 12 speed cassette 10-51 and in the front I have a 34 teeth and on the flat section I find my self in the 11’th speed (12 teeth). For the ones that are going to tell me to get a bigger chainring, well I can’t, my frame can’t take a 36 teeth chainring. So for me the 12 speed Shimano system is perfect.
@@TitoJoebs I have a one piece cassette for garbaruk mounted on a sram xd freehub. I like more the sram xd freehub over the micro spline because when you are in the lower gears (10, 11, 12) the power is better distributed throw the cassette. Contrariwise when you have the last sprockets separated from the cassette and your sprinting you put lots of power on a smaller portion of the freehub and the wear is bigger. After to years I changed a freehub dew to wear. Thank you for your recommendation.
I use a Shimano SLX 12 speed rear derailleur 11 speed cassette 1151 works great with a Dior 11-speed shifter. I don't know maybe the less the speed the more durable the chain it's not as narrow?
bike components and frames are up 25% over a year ago. Specialized SWorks frame is $6 freakin' thousand dollars now! Was more like $4K last year. It's ridiculous, the inflation on cycling gear. :(
Actually in my country m6100(without the cranks and new hub) is the same price as m5100(RD, cassette, shifter and chain) . So 12s is actually worth it if you already want to change hub and find the compatible chainring.
Honerstly I might put this on the hardcore hardtail build I have coming up. I already considered going with an a older 1x11 XT but this comes just right.
I am running my m6100 in 1-by 11 speed 11-46T config without any problems. it came from another bike running 2-by 11-42T with problems hence moved it to another bike in 1-by config.
What chain are you using? I did some research on complete mountain bikes specced with the M5100 cassette. They are paired with KMC chains. My M5100 cassette broke two chains, including a brand new SLX chain. I heard popping sounds before it snapped both chains. A former Shimano rep said that there was a bad batch of cassettes. I may have one of them. Before I ditch the M5100 cassette, I may try a KMC chain.
Nice videos as always buddy. , if I heard well you run 2x11 drivetrain , happy yo know I am not the only one that keep thinking that the big range and small jumps of the 2x11 is better for my 80 + kms trails , I am even getting my mechanic deore xt m8000 to the di2 xt. And all the people say I am cracy , and why I sm not spending on 1x12 drivetrain
I used this groupset (5100 11s) all last season, and I can deal with the weight, but the tolerances are not tight. A fully torqued on cassette has play in the spider for the largest cogs. It is slightly noticeable under power. That is my only issue with it though.
Do you have to buy a new "11speed" shifter when going from 12 speed cassette to 11 speed cassette? Is it the same answer if it was SRAM instead of Shimano?
Het man thanks for explaining these derailleurs i am new to mtb and wanted to convert my drivetrain from 3 by 9 to 1x11 with these parts but i was a bit worried if the derailleur could reach such big gears but it seems it will be fine thanks
I need to change my 11-42t 10 speed Deore rd & cassette to 11 speed 11-51t on my Specialized Turbo vado sl. Front crank is 44t, but then you have the SL 1.1 Motor to assist. Will have to price it up soon
I think, with this new 11-51 11sp system Shimano hit the jackpot! Now I can conveniently upgrade my old MTB from 3x8 to 1x11 and be at the leading edge of technology experience. Danny, what about a comparison of Deore 1x11 to Microshift 1x11 (or 1x10) ? Is Shimano trying to kill Microshift before they become a threat?
cool, I have Giant Talon 2 that has 2x9 acera/alivio combo, I want to swap that onto my wife's old novaro 3x? and this would be one way or used/older XT and I think like you I still prefer 2x part of that is I do use it on the road and I do have some long descents on gravel where I spin way to easy and (like I am going 30+). I am not racing more kind of using an XC bike rather than a gravel bike to climb up "hills" and come back down.
Ive just done same,up to 11 speed uses same freehub 12 speed is bloody microspline,so you have to change your freehub,so glad i got the 11 and not the 12,and i have a 36 narrow wide on the front
If you can buy one... Can't find anything at the moment with some parts. For example my next order of Bike parts i have to order from 3different stores. I had to get the 5120 and i use it with a Sunrace 11-50 cassette Works pretty good just like the older 11spd sgs. Sadly there is no light option of the 11-51 Kassette wich has less teeth difference in the first gears.
Good advice here in this vid. Cyclists are frequently paying for more than they need. Even in cases where the price is not unfair relative to the costs of materials and technology it can be materials and technology that provide no real advantage over lower cost materials and tech. My current favorite example: spending hundreds of $ for over sized trolley wheels. The theory being the larger trolley wheel causes less chain friction when the chain links flex around. If a buyer truly believes that the larger trolley results in measurably less friction when the lightly tension chain articulates around then why would you be OK with your highly loaded chain wrapping around a 10 tooth cassette cog? In a lot of cases the chain isn’t even able to seat correctly on the 10 tooth cassette cog. Get a drive train with a cassette that starts at 11 or 12 teeth before throwing money at large trolley wheels.
My 11-46t cassette is worn, so I just ordered the M5100 cassette and derailleur. Hopefully this works! I've been doing some bikepacking and could use an easier gear with the extra weight.
Just go for 8 speed, it has the sturdier wider chain compared to 9s-12s systems. If the gear selection isn't wide enough, you can update the cassette to something like 11-52T (likely need a rear derailleur extender too) and you will have crazy selection.
i have the 11s set and the First chain reached 0.5% and was replaced with 1400km, the Second one with 1300km. im on the 3rd one and have 2 other New chains. any rotation advise? anyone going until 0.75% or more?
I’m a it lost on all these names and stuff, I’ve never really done anything like this before, but I’m about to build a rigid Cannondale lefty, and I think I’ll run 1x11 or 1x12, it’s just all down to the money. I also have a Scott mountain bike I’m going to build and I really really want to go electronic with it, but it’s a long way before I need that, so they should be cheaper by them.
I agree so much, these 11 speed systems are solid. The only extra with 12 speed is 1 more cog and a slightly smaller smallest cog/ Yet again, at the cost of complexity, durability and reliability.
Yes, I don't see any reason to have extra small 10T cog. Pushing 34/10 gear ratio is very hard on a flat terrain; maybe agonist riders can do. Having 34T chainring with 11-51 cassette is enough for any trail and climb.
ive got a old version of the sram 11 speed xx1 mech and it only supports up to 42t, the 2nd hand bike i bought came with the sun race 11-50t and he put extra chain to get up to that cog but now the chain sags on the highest 2 gears, its a 250 pound carbon mech, and i like sram more so im considering for this mech, or a 10-42 sram cassette
My understanding is the 12S cassette does not fit on the 11S hub body. the 12S is microspline, 11S is HG hub body, so how can you put a microspline cassette onto the HG hub body? Isn't that what you said?
Hi Thanks for the video, I wonder if in an non boost frame can install the Deore 12 speed ,because of the Chainline as you explained , otherwise to avoid further problems I Stick with the M5100‽
It's not really 24 gears because of overlap and you'll notice that the 2X systems max out at ~42 cassette. Otherwise you need to make the derailleur cage a whole lot longer to deal with the extra chain needed. If you want to go this way look at the SRAM eTap system that is programable so that you can exclude certain ratios. Generally this is probably a waste of time and money unless you are bikepacking with heavy loads or something (in which case get a triple)
my 6yr old m8000 rear mech is banged up and ready to be replaced.. would you recommend i go with the older m8000 again? or go with the newer m5100 rear mech?
I have a microshift Advent X 10 speed 11-48 and I don’t think I have ever gone below 5th gear when riding the desert trails around Tucson. I’m not certain what the grade would have to look like to even need the 48 tooth sprocket, but I hope I never encounter it.
Prolly a vertical wall. I have an 11-46 casette paired with a 30T front sprocket, the slowest gear is so slow that at this point it would be easier/faster to hop off the bike and carry it up those extreme inclines that require such gearing.
4 minutes in and more relevant information than in any 20min videos I've watched about this.
Cheers
Would you prefer a 12? I just bought an XT M8000 now kind of thinking I should have bought a 12 speed. I am upgrading from 2x9

Wait, you're saying the SLX 12 speed rear derailleur works with 11 speed shifter?
I am almost certain that 5100 and 6100 rear derailleur are the same thing. The only difference is the 12 speed word print
Awesome content, Danny! Thank you for sharing so much with us.
This is definitely an option worth keeping in mind for future builds.
Very good arguement for the 1x11, with a pleasant, upbeat vibe. Thank you for the video.
Bro, the clutch is GOLD in MTB
@@vicentemorande1558 Exactly. Thats why it costs twice as expensive.
Very good I'm going 1x11 as you said is good for my older system mount.
Thank you. Just got a 11 speed.
thanks for this vid, got my components for 1x11 51t. works great. just had to go on ebay to get rear derailleur. shifts better than my sram 1x12.
Hola ¿ pero fue un desviador Shimano de 11v ?. Y si fuera así ¿ que modelo de Shimano de 11v es compatible con un cassette de 11/51 ? . Saludos.
I see many people reported faults with this cassete. Probably the best will be to find better alternative regarding cassete.
welcome to the club. thankfully my bike shop warrantied the cassette and now I have an XT 11-46
One thing that caught me out when installing the RD-M5100-SGS 11sp derailleur was the little tab that is supposed to sit between the b screw and hanger.
I just bought 11 speed Deore yesterday. nice video!!!!
Which chain do you use? I use the same, but grabbed the 6100 chain

@@paulb9769 What do you want to change it to? It's already an SGS long cage.
I was one of the first guys I know to get Shimano 1x12 xt. The shops first time with it was putting it on my bike. I love it. I liked the tip about lowering clutch to speed up shifts.
Nice classification of Deore Cogs and rear Derailleurs.
Just got a shimano 11 speed with a sunrace 11 to 50 cassette and front chain ring for $145.00. I think 11 speed drivetrains are the steel of the d cade right now.
11 speed is excellent standard
FYI ...shimano 12 speed derailer works great on 11 speed. sLx/ xt, xtr
if only 5100 was available any where at MSRP..I want to upgrade my 2x10 to 1x but dont want to change my HG hub/relace etc, so my shimano options :
-12 speed 6100/7100/8100 derailleur with chinese 11x50-52T cassette => seems like its working nowhere as good as full shimano drivertrain.
-11 speed 5100 not available
-1x11 from previous generation...I think I'm going this way with M8000 11-46T cassette/derailleur/shifter. im loosing about 10% of range but less expensive and better quality deore XT parts, double down shift and it will match nicely my deore XT rear bub and deore xt brake cakipers and levers with I-spec II.
I'm using the Deore M5100 and it works great. Really easy to tune of course it shifts beautifully. Shimano just rocks.
Nice, man! I was almost upgrading my groupset to 12, but I will go for the 11

VERY happy to have found this. I'm refreshing an old bike with 11 speed XT drivetrain and SLX brakes. The 51T will do nicely. I thought 46T was a good deal.
just install the new deore 11/51T cassette, works prefectly, much better and smother than my old Sunrace 11/50T.
Which Deore, m5100? Your Sunrace 11-50 was also in a group set 11s?
Great Video. Great arguments pro 11by Deore. Love Shimano Deore stuff. Resently built a custom commuter Ghost lector 5800 1by11 6100 and brakes deore groupset. Works just amazing.

My 2021 Kona Honzo has the 1x11 Deore. Probably the best drivetrain I've ever used
Danny, curious if that 11-51t 11 sp.
Cheers :)
edit: Also i get absolutely no chain drop when backpedalling(48 mm chainline in front).
What about you post your results on a video?
what 11-51T cassette did you get ? good quality non shimano cassettes are so expensive its the price of a complete groupset. chinese cassettes shifting quality seem to be no match for pure shimano groupset. seems like best value are shimano entry level Deore cassettes did you use the Deore CS-M5100 cassette ?

Mine M610 1×10 still working perfectly
I have also have seen some friends breaking chains on there 12 speeds pedaling at maybe higher tork and going OTB which I find concerning and wonder if this could be more of the problem for the 12 speeds and the cain they use .
from 2x alivio to 5100..very smooth shifting..i use 38t chainring..
My old 11 speed shimano xtr shifter worked. The deore $30 shifter is great. Its new and better than my old XTR 11 speed.
What is wrong with the Shadow Mount system. Why did Shimano go back to a more conventional mounting to the hanger? The Shadow Mount kept the derailleur father out of the way and I had many fewer bent derailleurs and derailleur hangers during crashes.
Thx man, u just made up my mind. Great advice.
Me too. I have it on 2 bikes now.
It's a little bit heavier. But, I can afford to save a kilo or two off my tummy for free just riding my bike.

So for me the 12 speed Shimano system is perfect.
why not change the last gear from 10T to 9T. You can buy it individually. Check eBay.
Is that the Deore SL-M5100 shifter? I thought only XT and XTR did rapid-fire multiple downshift. Great video, thank you!
You are right... I think.

bike components and frames are up 25% over a year ago.
100% true.. 12 speed not worth a hassle to upgrade from 11 speed

I have a 2x 9 just ordered an 11spd XT now thinking I've made a mistake not going 12.
The m5120 looks super similar to my xt m8000 (previous gen) its amazing how trickle down tech works on shimano
What is now the difference between 11s and 12s deore derraileur?
I used this groupset (5100 11s) all last season, and I can deal with the weight, but the tolerances are not tight. A fully torqued on cassette has play in the spider for the largest cogs. It is slightly noticeable under power. That is my only issue with it though.
i have the same problem with the bigger cogs
Do you have to buy a new "11speed" shifter when going from 12 speed cassette to 11 speed cassette? Is it the same answer if it was SRAM instead of Shimano?
Het man thanks for explaining these derailleurs i am new to mtb and wanted to convert my drivetrain from 3 by 9 to 1x11 with these parts but i was a bit worried if the derailleur could reach such big gears but it seems it will be fine thanks

And with a 30t in the front I'm gonna be cruising up those steeps

Just go for 8 speed, it has the sturdier wider chain compared to 9s-12s systems. If the gear selection isn't wide enough, you can update the cassette to something like 11-52T (likely need a rear derailleur extender too) and you will have crazy selection.
52t 8 speed? hahahaha

How do fix the bad chain line in the lowest Cog? That's not good
I’m a it lost on all these names and stuff, I’ve never really done anything like this before, but I’m about to build a rigid Cannondale lefty, and I think I’ll run 1x11 or 1x12, it’s just all down to the money. I agree so much, these 11 speed systems are solid.
The only extra with 12 speed is 1 more cog and a slightly smaller smallest cog/
Yet again, at the cost of complexity, durability and reliability.

I been curious about the Deore. I'm currently running GX. Also, I wonder if there will be new options for Cassettes - they're getting ridiculous!

Hi Thanks for the video, I wonder if in an non boost frame can install the Deore 12 speed ,because of the Chainline as you explained , otherwise to avoid further problems I Stick with the M5100‽
What about 2x12? Once you have microspline hub you keep it and you can easily upgrade crankset and have a variety of 24 gears
0:40 is that rim hit at 11o clock ?
is m5100 11 speed 11-51t compatible to 135mm frame and fh-m475 hubs?
my 6yr old m8000 rear mech is banged up and ready to be replaced.. would you recommend i go with the older m8000 again? or go with the newer m5100 rear mech?
I have a microshift Advent X 10 speed 11-48 and I don’t think I have ever gone below 5th gear when riding the desert trails around Tucson. I’m not certain what the grade would have to look like to even need the 48 tooth sprocket, but I hope I never encounter it.
Prolly a vertical wall. I have an 11-46 casette paired with a 30T front sprocket, the slowest gear is so slow that at this point it would be easier/faster to hop off the bike and carry it up those extreme inclines that require such gearing.
With a 38T chainring you still get worst gear ratio on x11 (3.45) than with 36T on the x12 (3.6)
10s still fits my needs and my area not upgrading anytime soon. 😅
One BIG problem. No derailleur lock open for wheel removal ETC
Wheels should be kept on the bike😅
hahaha yep, I have this groupset on my bike and taking off the rear wheel is much harder than it needs to be
