Speaking as a bike mechanic from the 90's, I didn't expect the freehub to fit, well done 😁
Eric, much love, but, please don't disrespect Shimano... They DEFINITELY stand for reasonably priced bikes and their mid grade stuff is bullet proof for a lot less than SRAM. NOW, don't get me wrong, SRAM makes fabulous stuff, but I've never been willing to throw the extra money at it, when Shimano does it SO WELL for the price.
Id argue that mid grade is not reasonable priced these days
@@pratikpramanik7782 SARS-CoV-2 has definitely changed the game, but I think SRAM has faced the same challenges that Shimano has... But, touche. I was totally thinking pre-pandemic, because I've been riding bikes since 1985.
I agree shimano makes some really good stuff however they also make some pretty sub par components as well. The new 12 speed road groupo’s are so finicky. If your hanger is not dead straight it won’t shift for shit. Also any of there cable actuated road shifter chew thru the cables way to fast. This is just from my experienced being a full time mechanic at a bike show though. And I have not seen this personally but there cranks delaminating seems far to common and they haven’t done shit about any of those problems for many years.
@@maddoxmcpherson3731 I totally agree with you about Shimano's top tier, the cranks are shoddy, unreliable, epoxy nonsense, but Tiagra cannot be disrespected, nor Deore. Fucking workhorses. Only weight weenies, with big budgets, suffer the consequence and they can have them.
Old Deore and 9 peed road Shimano are SIS, and that makes for simple, cheap, big range 2x setups, because you can mix older Deore with more modern Sora road levers. If you're riding more then 9 speed out back and you have more gear range than my 2003 XTR 3x9, than I ask you... Are you really riding a reasonably priced bike?
that ratio on a 26" wheel will climb a tree.
Derailleur is hanging mighty low for trails, but definitely enticing for 26mtb bike packing
Going through that now trying to do 1x on a 26” mtb. After adding a wolf tooth type derailleur extension the bottom pulley is an inch from the rim. Might go back to the 32t cassette and run 2x
@@thebr0wnhornet Heres my trick: 38 or 40tooth 1x chainring. Leave the granny on the crank. Ditch the front derailleur and shifter. 11-36 8-10 speed cassette. These can be had cheaply too. Friction shifting, thumbies or bar cons, a 9 speed Shimano m591 or m592 derailleur works perfect with 8-10 wide range gears. Since it's friction shifted , any cheap cassette you can find works. Ride on the big ring mostly and learn how to push yourself hard. When you finally give in, get off the bike, catch your breath, take in the view and put the chain on the granny by hand. At the top, stop again, relax, put it on the big ring again, have a snack or a drink then get into the fun stuff once more!
If you can use some of your old parts, this is one of the cheapest ways to get a 'one by' setup that keeps a decent useable gear range. When the going gets rough wrap up the chain in large gear combos so its tight. Easy peezy. Its even fine for road riding to the trailhead and multi day touring. I like the closer spaced gears in particular. One by is practically useless for my brand of fun and exploration. Tried it and hated it for anything but rough trail. Old rando geeks don't learn new tricks. This is a great set up for mixed road/ trail and gravelish rigs.
I use 2x10 XT on my fully as well. I like riding to get to the trails. Old Shimano 'junk' rocks! Lasted much longer than old Sram junk too. That stuff is long gone!
Yeah that seems overkill with the lower ratio you get from a smaller 26 wheel; could easily get away with a 34 tooth chain ring up front. But I dont like the long derailleur cage either. What’s wrong with a 9spd wide range cassette and shorter derailleur cage. Like the MicroShift Advent setup…love that drive train.
@@rollinrat4850 I mean my setup works just might rip the derailleur on a rock someday. 36t up front 12-46 micro shift acolyte 8 spd, using the Deore derailleur and shifter that were on the bike. $30 cassette, $6 for the wolf tooth, $20 for a cheap narrow wide
@@thebr0wnhornet Yup, Yup, __it happens..... Par for the course......
“I hope this isn’t coming off as one of those dream builds. “
You’re pure gold brother
90s MTB love is overdue. These bikes are so much fun when retrofitted with modern components!
been following your channel for 2 years and all i can say, this is my favorite build.
Super Cool stuff. Love to see Spindatt keeping the 26 inch revolution alive!
Wicked cool how you marry vintage and modern to keep this bike rolling again. What was once old is new again! Spinny, keep up the awesome diversified video content rolling.
Great product, easy to clean -worked out great !
I love it when a plan comes together
I have a 90's trek and I want to do this to it. Looking forward to watch your other videos on this bike
Deore looks awesome! Thinking about doing this to my 1980s Schwinn but need to find a newer freehub to replace my rear freewheel first.
Great video, love the classic rides
Radness - thank you for posting this! Was just contemplating what it would take to get a modern 1x drivetrain on a mid-'90s Trek I have sitting around here.
So Cool! I am amazed by the 52 tooth.
This is the type of video I’ve been waiting for!
Love the bike and the coffee!
Great video currently building up a trek 850 antelope so this helps a lot 👍
Dude I never even though about swapping free hub bodies. Omgggggg I have to go to the shop soon lol.
I converted my old 2007 GT Chucker from Acera 3x9 to SRAM NX 1x11 with a 11-42 cassette.....1x systems always look better in my view and less hassle.....I even converted my 2x CX and gravel bikes to 1x systems.....
Your channel has been a tad influential these past few years.....I'm still watching it so keep up the good work.
A set of decent forks on that old bike after the 1x conversion should look the mutt's nuts !!!
Thank you sir...your video literally saved my bike build in hopes of a transfer from 9 speed to 11 speed. Now i'm hoping the freehub body I ordered does work on my deore xt wheels
Which freehub body did you order and did it work??
Nice! I can recommend the Shimano XT M8000 series as well, you can find them used for a reasonable price and the rd can be serviced in like 30min. I've swapped multiple bikes with it, the latest being a 26" with a 42 single front (fsa vero) and a 11-46 m8000 in the rear (the cassette can be a cheaper one, you don't need the expensive xt cassette).
Love this. :) Recently swapped a Uni-Hyper (threaded for Uniglide AND Hyperglide) 7 spd freehub body for a 10 spd one (and discovered there were 2 different Shimano freehub styles, regular and "heavy duty" :S, fortunately was able to scrounge the right one). I did have to re-dish the wheel a little so the brakes didn't rub after I adjusted the cones for freehub clearance. Had the same issue you had with bottom bracket too, I'd forgotten that you needed 3 different tools to remove those old school BB's and my 2 pin spanner is lost somewhere in the sands of time. 2 finish nails in a chunk of scrap 1x2 did the trick for me (after I failed with vice grips and needle nose pliers) Modern BB's sure spoil you for ease of install/uninstall.
That looks well nice now with that mahoosive cassette, can't wait to see it with a better fork 👍
Methinks a larger chainring will be needed. Gotta love the shiny parts, looking cool.
I set up narrower range cassettes like 11-32 or 11-36. 8-10 speeds with a larger 1X chainring like a 38 or 40. Workin' in a shop, I've got an almost endless supply of 1/2 used drivetrain parts. Everybody wants to upgrade. I don't see why folks won't use stuff until it's usefulness is gone.
These are good general trail gears and enough gear for road rides on the pavement to get to the dirt. I leave the 22 or 24 granny on the crank. I keep crankin until I'm really suffering on hard climbs. Then I get off, catch my breath and put the chain on the granny by hand. I only need it for extra long, steep climbs anyways. Its a good way to learn to push your limits. Ive even bike packed with these set ups.
Its sort of like my singlespeeds, but the suffering isn't quite as intense. This set up gives me the ability to ride for much longer, even day after day on a tour. I do a fixed gear century road&dirt once a year , but I can hardly walk the next day!
I have an old purple/blue fade 830 MountainTrack frame I got for $20 & this IS my dream build !
I need to go this route on my diamond back, if I ever commit to replacing the trusty 3x7
I love upgrading old 26 bikes, so even though I am only 1:34 into it I am loving this video (at least the idea)
dude i subscribed from the intro alone! sweet bikes!
Ha!! The needle nose trick, I love it lol
I think I'm gonna snap the pliers everytime, but it's never done me wrong....recent got the park tool pin spanner though hahaha
great build like these videoes
Another coffee shop keeping us bikers going. Got to love it
I'll take this fork on my trail bike! This will be an upgrade!!
Sick dude!
5:33 “And I thought you were ready to give up “
A common theme of Spindatt videos…
I wasn't a fan of shimano, and then I decided to put that exact drive on a 1996 santa cruz heckler and it's the bomb!!!
I only subscribed because I care about the well being of my trail bike, great content as usual 👌
Turning into a good build.
Awesome
I love your channel!. What you do with your bikes is the same thing i do.
Thank you for the #subscriptionthreats, we've been missing them. 🙂👍
I WANT THAT FORK!!
Dear god. The more videos I watch on this channel the more ideas I have and that means the more dollars I convince myself I need to spend. Shocking.
I just swapped a 51t Deore to my #Y2Kona Fire Mountain. I just singled out an XT crank with a Raceface 38t NW ring and it's geared low enough to effectively 'walk' up some pretty steep stuff. While I've gotten comments on the long cage, I've been through some brush and it seems to be tucked in well enough to avoid snagging anything, though I plan more bikepacking than trail riding on this bike anyway.
Nice to see this if you look it up online you can’t find any info ever
I had a Trek like that one as a kid, it was my first "real" bike
I got one of those forks. It's a Marzochi XC600 Titanium air fork.
I’m in a similar situation, I have a Cannondale lefty I’m rebuilding as my pimp hardtail bike, but then I have 2 super nice, super clean mid-late 90’s mountain bikes, and I’m going to start building a replica of my first mountain bike, so I’m going to end up with 3 rigid, 10-12 speed mountain bikes, plus I have a GT Avalanche I plan to make into a 26” BMX like yours, but my biggest and most exciting build will be a Klunker I’m planning. Disc brake conversion, maybe sprung front, maybe solid, not sure, some nice steel wheels with a 1 x 12 most likely, balloon tyres, I’m really keen for that!
There's something really satisfying about a well built BB. Took apart a campy BB on a 1970 Raleigh that had been used as a commuter in Oregon. The outside was super grimy but inside was squeaky clean, the grease hadn't even discolored at all. The cups had a threading pattern where the spindle goes through that keeps dirt out.
That corkscrew pattern pumped out all the water and not a seal in sight. Plus the quality of the steel and lapped bearing races was amazing. I wonder what a mechanic would think today if they saw a BB with no seals on it?
I found out I had them two holes on a bike but not tool so I took my grind wrench that had prongs. It worked.
That's a great hack👍
As a Eastern European I find it kinda funny how you say word "OUT" noticed that watching Trailer Park Boys as well. All the best man
I wonder if I can go from 8 to 11spd with an old late '90s XTR hub. I probably have switch out my derailleur (reverse shifting XTR and shifter)? I can always dream....
With the big cassette when in bigger gear will the derailed hang lower and hit. Something.
Music is finally getting a little hipper at least the beginnings now 😂
👍🏻
I got a 12sp on a 1994 trek 830shx had to play with the chainline
Very jealous. I tried swapping the freehub body on my 7-speed hub but I wasn't so lucky. Mine has some weird interface that's apparently rare so I couldn't find a single one that matches. And I tried at least half a dozen. So I cobbled together a Frankenstein monster of a freehub body from the original and one other, using the bigger 8/9/10-speed shell and I just BARELY managed to screw it together. Still haven't summed up the courage to actually mount it back on the wheel and try it out though.
Hello, interesting to see this.
I have the same setup on my bike which is much modern than yours.
What chainline you have there? On my bike I put 4mm spacers on crank to make CL perfect.
Watching and subscribing from philippines
Yo Eric use the white ‘dummy freehub’ to line up your new cassette with the splines on the freehub of the bike an then you can just drop it on in one go
I was about to post the same thing. I feel like only 0.01% of people know that the white cassette holder is designed to fit into the free hub body for easy installation.
All options? So pink handlebar tassels and Player cards in the spokes. Got it.
I did something similar just yesterday with an old 7sp wheel, on which I transplanted an 8sp free hub, but then the wheel didn't sit in the center and v brakes no likey when that happens. I messed up with the spoke tension and moved the whole wheel sideways. I hope it won't kill me lmao
If you have a steel frame you should cold press the rear to allow more space 135mm +. You wouldn't have to mess with the spoke tension and whatnot lol but Hey! If you alive next week then it all worked fine! Lol
The derailleur will hit the ground 🥶
I bought 2 Treks today (Getting in early for Xmas) and the dealer said there are only 22 of that model coming to Australia this year. Tonnes of frames but no Shimano ‘noisy’ bits thanks to COVID.
My recent find; 4130 diamondback 26” came with a Mach 5 fork! But the stiffener thing is broke. Jb weld??!! And “cork” it for rigid street use ?? Not sure how, show me?
Can you fit a 32 or 34 tooth chainring on that frame? 30T x12 on a 26” wheel is going to be very limited on top speed.
Did this with an old 2004 mongoose full suspension bike and pretty much put the parts bin special on it. My fiance isn't super big into mountain so I don't want to waste the money to buy her a modern geometry frame. So its pretty much a mullet 69er with a modern rockshox front and rear shock with hydraulic brakes and modern hubs. Thing rides great but I wouldnt want to race on it.
A 27.5 front wheel would be interesting.
Pretty cool set up. Deore is excellent quality stuff. Now I need to get a Nitto bullmoose bar after many many years for some cruiser build. Get yourself a rigid fork so you don't worry about an old clapped out pogo stick. Besides Marzocchi Bombers, none of the '90s forks aged very well at all.
Did your hub setup use the old 9 or 10 speed axle?
What bottom bracket and size was used? I have trek 7000, just trying to make sure I order the right size
With quadruple and quintuple custom cranksets, it would be possible to get rid of huge frying pans on the rear hub, especially on the tiny 26" wheel of a retro mtb, because, as Jan Heine wrote, «Now the time has finally come to go beyond three chainrings». A really modern bike with a really modern solution is not a 1x12 drivetrain, but was already presented in 1973 at the Salon de Cycle in Paris by Alex Singer.
I still really want to convert my Rockhopper to a 1x setup but I'm just not sure what parts I need and if my freehub can take a larger cassette. Would I be better off getting a LBS to do this for me? And this is after watching your Rockhopper videos 😂
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🔥🔥🔥
Is it possible to do this with an all-new rear hub or will i run into problems with OLD?
what store did you end up ordering the groupset from?
I have a 1997 GT palomar. Does anyone know if I can convert it to 1 x 10 or 1x11 (what I really want)?
does the chains rub the tire when its in biggest cog?
That Deore FC-M5100-1 crankset is supposed to have a 52 mm chainline. That will be about 2mm more than a 3x crankset I believe. Did you experience any issues with the shifting or when backpedalling?
Thinking of doing the same (if I can get parts one of these days!) but I am not sure about shifthing, backpedalling issues?
Cheers!
Well, you can install anything as long as the frame supports components
Do you need new cranks for this set up or are they just extra touch up???
Keep. The. Marzocchi. It has a removable steerer so "just" pop in a threadless one.
The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
I've always been a shimano fan boy compared to Sram. A little fiddling seems to pay off in dividends with longevity and reliability. BUT, that freaking pinchbolt design, I could do without.
Anybody have resources to research that freehub body swapping? Seems valuable, but I am completely unfamiliar.
The music sort of push you that way. Great video but I do love a 3 by 7.
Yeah. These 1 by whatevers are solutions in search of a problem. I'll never give up my 3x7 and 3x8.
Wanna come down to Illinois and make this swap out on my 2003 Trek 800?
it definetly deserves a nicer wheelset!
Please, help me understand the gearing on this bike! I started riding with a low gear of 42/28 and my 17 year old legs took me up anything paved (even if I did have to zig zag). Now my 39/32 is tough lol. My GT Mountain bike is geared so low (22/36) granny gear I can barely keep the bike upright unless I'm over 100 cadence. Just plain silly IMHO
i thought that you had to redish the wheel. So its really that easy on a 90s MTB?
Is it worth going to 11 speed (on a 1 x) on a 26 inch wheel? Isn’t 10 speed enough in a 1 x scenario?
Can you figure out and link for us what it would take for someone that doesn't have an extra freehub that magically works? I want to do this to my wife's garage sale mountain bike.
I went to the local dump to get rid of some scrap metal and there were PILES old mountain bikes in a twisted up heap that were destroyed by a bull dozer. 😒
I wish there were some smaller 11 speed cassettes. I don't need a 50 tooth. Even 40 tooth
Deore is best value groupset made.
From 7 to 11
Best title ever
You should be sponsored by 7/11 for this :)
I'd love to see you throw sensah on a bike of yours. I want to see you test it and abuse it
Now i understand why the industry was pushing toward 29" wheels, this derailleur is going to it alot of stuff on the ground :')
I run xt 12 speed on a 26 and clearance is fine, I only ever use the 52t on fire road climbs anyway the wrap is really good on the 10t
@@spade6240 what's your front Chainring size? How many teeth do you got on there?
*Why not the Alfine 11?*
That cassette was comical on that smaller wheel
Looks cool, but why doing it is a good idea?, you'll have less gears, more stressed and thin chain that breaks easily, the derailleur is more exposed so way easier to destroy, more expensive cause parts aren't free 🤷♂️🤔
Is that a gold set of odyssey twisted pedals? I have one set laying around lol. they're kind of used though, it wears off quick
Yes it is haha
@@Spindatt that's cool from what i know they're pretty rare. as far as rare goes in bmx. Wish they numbered them like Animal did their stems. Many fellow bmxers transitioning into MTB nowadays huh? myself included. Cool channel dude sweet content! \o/
Love the bike design ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube. All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.
