Here's 15 differences between the original New Super Mario Bros. U and its Super Mario Maker 2 version!

Well, I Was Trying To Say It.
*Funky mode*
Nice Yoshi dance.
7:46 i was dancin in the cave
Wow
7:12
That “peculiar animation” is still in Mario Maker 2, just when you get knocked back by a rolling snowball.
another difference: in SMM2, things don't react to BUHs
NSMBU: BUH
Everyone: a little dance
SMM 2 (and 1): BUH
Everyone: meh
Unfortunate
@@YounesLayachi VERY unfortunate
What's buh
@@thanoscube8573 that sound in the music
Everything’s so much more animated in the original, SMM2 just looks static and boring next to it
I mean, I'm pretty sure NSMBU uses actual 3D models while in Mario Maker 2 it's just prerendered sprites
Exactly, but why? Maybe the Wii U couldn’t handle it in SMM1, but obviously the Switch can because 3DW is able to make everything use 3D models just fine.
@@campbellsonic well all styles are pretty much the same with some exclusive items, moves etc.
So NSMBU is actually a reskinned version of other styles with exclusive stuff, because I guess it was easier for them to do that than make a whole new style like 3D World .
@@majimalover1 but theres still things like specific animations, like enemies dancing to the music, which got removed
Even though it has the best controls imo, it's best to just use another style
When the Mario's away, the Yoshies will play!
*PAH!*
THEY DO THE MARIO
B.U.P
Now that you commented this now I know it
@@Mario-xg3nu Mario, are you high or something?
The NSMBU style in Mario Maker 2 looks so cheap compared to how NSMBU actually looks
I know it bothers me
Yes I know right similar to what they did with the NSMBU Style in the 3DS version of Mario maker one they made it look like NSMB DS back in 2006 and it looks worse than NSMB2
The enemies and stuff are pre-rendered sprites while they are 3D models in the original.
Yep
They actually improved it a lot in Super Mario Maker 2. Compare it to the first Super Mario Maker.
Here’s a few more key differences, if you weren’t already planning a part two:
• *YOU CAN SPIN JUMP ON ENEMIES YOU CAN’T NORMALLY JUMP ON*
•Big enemies, such as big goombas and big piranha plants, only take one fireball to kill. In the original, it would’ve taken three.
•Piranha plants don’t make that weird meowing noise when killed.
•Mushrooms and fire flowers no longer twitch from side to side.
•Bloopers are able to phase through blocks. They couldn’t in the original. (Nannies also don’t disperse their babies, unlike the original)
•Big wigglers can’t survive poison.
•Some Koopalings have different sound effects when killed.
•The rainbow effect for when a player has a star is a lot more desaturated, and more akin to the NSMBDS star effect.
•Lakitu clouds are much thinner.
•P switches are a darker blue.
•Pipes look more like the NSMBW pipes than the more plastic NSMBU pipes.
•Every enemy can emit light in a dark area.
•Fish bones don’t crumble upon impact with another fish bone, and their eyes don’t glow in the dark.
•Bullet bills won’t shift Y-position when colliding with another bullet bill that’s on the same X-position as them.
•Banzai bills are darker, and don’t rotate. (One of my least favorite differences)
•Lava looks completely different.
•The axe bridge looks more like the SMB axe bridge than the more bony NSMBU axe bridge.
NSMBU? More like Mario Bros. 2.5D
2 more, enemies don't dance to the music, and piranha plants' animations are completely different
Actually, pipes look like the pipes from super mario run. So no. Its not from NSMBW.
@@Underd0ggern Super Mario Run takes a lot of it's assets from the New Super Mario Bros. U style in Super Mario Maker, including the pipes. Super Mario Maker 2 wouldn't exist without the original game.
Also, big enemies in MM2 are just bigger models of the normal enemies, unlike in NSMBU where the enemies are completely different models
Other 3 differences:
1) In NSMBU Monty Moles can spawn from semi-solids
2) In NSMBU you can't spin on spinies
3) In NSMBU Koopalings' shells moved more regularly than SMM2 (in NSMBU they did three laps of the screen, in SMM2 they don't)

1:11 that triple jump looks really odd.
its a glitch/exploit
I've always thought Mario Maker's Mario U was lacking a lot of visual polish compared to the original.
of course it is a lot of stuff is unnecessary in nsmbu
It's because Mario Maker uses sprites for entities instead of models. In NSMBU, basically only terrain and blocks are ice. In SMM2, only Mario is a model - everything else is a sprite.
@@hagollownah
@@superluig164that’s just nsmb
@@hagollowhell no
Many of these issues stem from SMM2 using pre-rendered sprites instead of the actual models.
Another thing is that it uses the enemy sprites from Super Mario Run, which is odd.
@@HYP3RHyperhow can u tell?
@@HYP3RHyper Other way around. Mario Run uses enemy sprites from Mario Maker 1, which were reused in Mario Maker 2
Some more differences are quite obvious. In NSMBU, Pokeys will become stompable for a few seconds after every "Bah" in the music that is playing. In SMM2, the pokeys act the same in all styles. In NSMBU, some of the level objects will stall or bounce after every "Bah" in the music, which includes the koopa, goomba, goombrat, Yoshi, and the power ups. In NSMBU, the night forest background depicts, well, a forest during the night. In SMM2, the night forest theme uses the stock night background. The same can also be said for the night snow, the night castle, and the night sky themes.
*So basically the original is better.*
N o
Oh yes, true story.
Yes
My yosh tho
Honestly, It Has More Themeing Options For The Castles And Outside Levels, So I Agree
7:46 me partying with myself
Some of these seem to have performance reasons, some are just bit too weird and unfitting for MM2, some are obvious glitch fixes and rest is being lazy and not programming a new entity data for NSMBU and just using what SMB has.
If they can get a whole style that only uses 3d models u wouldn't have been too hard
It's because they elected to replace all the models (besides Mario) with 2D sprites, despite having the 3D world style, which keeps 3D models for everything. It's really obvious once you realize that's the reason - shells stop spinning in profile because they didn't make sprites for every direction. Dry bones doesn't lose its head because they didn't make a separate sprite for it. In NSMBU, all that stuff is dead easy, because they're already 3D models.
Official Mario game style: mint chocolate chip ice cream with strawberry sauce, marshmallows, chocolate sprinkles, and a flake to top it off
Smm2: here’s plain vanilla

@@Kendrick-vq2tqI love it, but it's plain
theyre not gonna make a one-to-one copy of the game bruh
5:20 the slopes angles here aren’t aligned but in the mm2 version they are so it works in mm2
You have my respect for putting the Yoshi safe at the start while still showing the fact!
I normally just go "Oh these are some pretty cool facts" then leave but I had to like because of the outro.
What about the fact that in the acorn suit, you can glide after spin jumping in the original, but not in MM2
For the Thwomps, their spikes are slightly different in Super Mario Maker 2, as they seem to be bigger and more white than they were in New Super Mario Bros. U, and the corner spikes on the SMM2 Thwomps seems to be more pointed up.
Good observation
Imagine being a visual downgrade from New Super Mario Bros U.
I am
0:22
Yoshi: Bye
Game: nope
I think you were able to triple jump in U because you touched the ground a bit before the shell, and in MM2 Mario might be losing speed on the slope slides because of the single flat tile in the middle.
The outro in this video is maybe one of the best 🤣🤣
Here's 15 differences between the original New Super Mario Bros. U and its Super Mario Maker 2 version:
1. 0:09 Don't leave Yoshi on Donut blocks in NSMBU, Yoshi makes Donut blocks fall down even if you're not riding him! 0:29 In SMM2, Yoshis are very, very light on their feet!
2. 0:48 Shell Acrobatics. In NSMBU, you can complete a triple jump while holding a shell. 1:16 In SMM2, the final somersault doesn't come out if you pick up a shell!
3. 1:28 Triple Ghostly Difference. In NSMBU, Mario looks directly at Boos! … and they get emotional and sweat when Mario is looking at them! 1:55 In SMM2, Mario keeps looking straight ahead when a Boo's not in his line of slight. Boos don't glow and leave no wake and they don't shed drops of sweat.
4. 2:14 Resurrection Animations. In NSMBU Dry Bones lose their heads when hit and then regain it even from afar.
3:06 AMLO

1:06 That is so weird
Bro Mario having a spin stroke💀
5:59 this is because new super mario bros u has 3d animation but the style has pre rendered sprites
Bah bah
Another difference
When mario jumps on spiky enemies (not actual spikes) in NSMBU, he gets hit when mario in SMM2 can spin on them
Seems that there are many more differences than i thought they were.
I was today years old when I realized Yoshi bops to the music in NSMBU
The Whistling At 0:09 Is So Cute!❤
That’s just the music
Oh, I See.
In the original, with the acorn suit, you can spin jump and glide, in SMM2 you can’t glide after spin jumping, I hate that

Wish they started to giving Mario Maker 2 minor updates or paid dlc so the U style can feel more like the one in the actual Mario U game
They didnt give any paid dlc to SMM2
@@nintendoboy3605 I’m saying that they SHOULD, because this game has so much support still, more than animal crossing, it’s time for Nintendo to branch out to other games an give those games support than just animal crossing 24/7
If the paid dlc stops mario maker 3 my wallet (if I had one) would be starving
@@SuperDupTNT I rather have paid dlc instead of Mario maker 3, I’M NOT WAITING 3-4 YEARS JUST FOR THE 3RD GAME JUST TO GET WHAT I WANT

the style isnt too bad, but enimies literally just flip when they turn. They could've at least added all the animations and the pokeys look awful.
Yeah the pokeys are just pathetic. It looks like they added it in 10 minutes maybe even less honestly.
0:39 Yoshi in diet
I think that there's more differences between the original New Super Mario Bros. U and its Super Mario Maker 2 version:
In NSMBUD, Blue Toad was replace with Toadette, so I guest that both Yellow Toad and Blue Toad share one character slot under generic identifier of "Toad", however in SMM2, only Yellow Toad was replace with Toadette because Toad is colored blue in the original game, akin Blue Toad. Nabbit didn't return as a playable character in Super Mario Maker 2. Power-ups like the Ice Flower, Penguin Suit, Mini Mushroom, P-acorn and Super Crown didn't return in Super Mario Maker 2. In NSMBU, when you here the sound bah and magic effect, Goombas and Buzzy Beetles will jump, Koopa Troopas will face at the screen and turn their hands left and right, Cheep Cheeps will swirl around, Wigglers will wiggle their bodies and Bullet Bills will spin around but in SMM2, Goombas and Buzzy Beetls won't jump, Koopa Troopas won't face at the screen and turn their hands left and right, Cheep Cheeps won't swirl around, Wigglers won't wiggle their bodies and Bullet Bills won't spin. In NSMBU, Big Wigglers survive in poison. In SMM2, Big Wigglers won't survive in poison. In SMM2, Big enemies such as Big Goombas and Big Piranha Plants only take one hit by one fire ball however in NSMBU, they take three hits by three fire balls.
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!
Don't Miss The Outro At 7:46. It's Yoshi Saying Baa Everytime Until The Video is Over. Hope You Like It :) And Remember That I'm Yasir, Not Looygi.
The reason SMM2 is worse (I’m sure all of you already know this) is because in NSMBU they have only that game in a way to worry about whereas SMM2 has to have 5 different themes and so they can’t put immense detail in everything
And it's because they decided to put 2D sprites instead of 3D model for ennemies
You can create a perpetual motion machine in SMM2 using a seesaw titled at a specific angle and a star.
man i love your job u are amazing thank you so much for what u do for us keep it up and u will grow very fast Now towards the one million subscribers will it be possible CONGRATULATIONS Friend Could you give me a serious little heart
5:33 this was probably taken out because u might have a level with a coin clear condition, fire flower and enemies. U see the problem?
7:44 woah i never knew that animation was even in smm2!
its actually a change re used from smm1
smm1 didnt have clear conditions
I realize that despite the different times that both versions date back. The Wii U version is better adapted and has more detail while on Switch everything is more simplified.
It looks more like a Port of the Wii U version than a new game in itself because although it has improved certain mechanics, it leaves a lot to be desired.
Well that was a missed opportunity for Pokeys to hang on the ceiling
0:21 Yoshi falls on the dounet blocks
*Yoshi* : Hi !
*Mario* : Oh no ! Yoshi is gone !
Yoshi falls for a moment then he gets pushed by the water pressure

I really hope mario maker 3 makes the NSMBU style look as good as it did in NSMBU, and not as cheap as it does in SMM2 and 1
2:25 you hurt the drybones
I love the attention to the details , i would probably miss all those facts if wasn't for this video. It's interesting to know that the developers cared so much about their game to do those little modifications.
I love your videos UWU!!!! YAYY!!!!
i wonder if they used the new super mario bros wii engine instead of new super mario bros u engine in mario maker 2, cause most of the things are missing from the wii version as well.
SMM2 looks worse because:
1: theyre not 3d models
2: Nintendo had more freedom on NSMBU than we have on SMM2
3: some of these things could break the game/make some levels almost impossible (example: if the enemies reacted to the"Buh"s, someone could make a level where you have to crouch under a goomba while its jumping to the "Bah"s, which im guessing is extremely hard)
4: theyre not gonna make a one-to-one copy of the game (of course not)
Yoshi run form super smash bros 0:39
6:38 *dies*
4:55 i mean, if its nighttime underground then they will be upside down, but everything else will too
Bah's are always there, no matter that version
but in SMM2 things unfortunately don't react to it
i have the feeling that why the details are missing is that the enemies aren't 3D Models and actually sprites
The worst difference is that enemies and Yoshi don’t vibe to the “bah”s
@Dry Boi No
@@ilikeminecraft1232 Yes
I know I’m super late but I just want to say Merry Christmas everyone 😊
another difference: SMM2 Probably has a scarier anti-piracy screen then NSMBU
The NSMBU theme always annoyed me because it just looks really bad compared to the source material, and they did nothing to fix that in SMM2...
Finally, Yoshi, what are you doing......
I Don't Ever Think Enemies On Ceilings Will Ever Happen In SMM2, The Only Option Is To Make The Level Night Underground And Make Them Upside Down But You'll Also Be Upside Down.
2:34 the mario looks at you with disappointment for not killing the drybones completely.
*now he is going to die
It’s kind of disappointing how little detail is in the nsmbu game style a lot of these little details are really cool and it’s sad that the graphics and effects are so watered down
In New Super Mario Bros. U, you can't spin-jump on Piranha Plants. In Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2, you can spin-jump on Piranha Plants.
Wayyy to late on this one, but I think some of these are changed because almost everything in the NSMU style are actually 2D sprites…
So basically this entire comment section is just people criticizing the Mario maker two style
You missed that they don't do the "bah bah" dance
7:51 bah
In NSMBU, Every Bah Makes Goombas Jump And Koopas Dance, In SMM2, That Action No Longer Happens
Very informative video
3:05 what is Blud doing to Yoshi 💀
Haha I used to bully the drybones and try to make them lose their head from as far as possible for ages lmfao
How to have Pokey walk on ceilings: Put a track
7:22 So mario do not know how to punch he is forced to have a luma 😂😂😂
0:15 The water : *There’s a starman, waiting in the sky...*
Nintendo should improve the NSMBU style for Mario maker 3 in 2024 or 2025 cuz they better stop being lazy and make the style more like the original game. More polished, more models and better quality!
(Edit 1: Ok I’ve changed my mind. I think that they should change the style to the deluxe version in SMM3 and use 3D models there cuz I’ve seen levels in the 3D world style where they are kaizo och enemy spam levels with the 3D MODELS and it worked just fine. So why not do let nsmbu style have 3D models to for that matter? Like it would make the style look so much better and it would make the Mario Maker series stand out more. (Fun fact: in the first original Mario maker test game they used the actual 3D nsmbu style.)
7:46 was so funny that I can't stop laughing😂😅😆
Hey looygi i looked old your oddisey videos and are you italian?
Si,lo è!
Yeah,He is
You forgot some:
1. In New Super Mario Bros. U, Toadette doesn't slip on ice (regardlessif she had the Penguin suit or not). In Super Mario Maker 2, Toadette is no longer resistant to slipping on ice, and will still slip
2. In NSMBU, Toadette could swim properly like if she had the Penguin suit. That's not the case in SMM2, as she swims like the others.
Because that wouldn't be unfair at all
Hey Looygi, I watched a few of your videos where you showed creative ways to use pokeys in SMM2 and I used some of your ideas to make one big level. I won’t be uploading it for a while, but when I do, do you want me to credit you in my description? I feel bad because none of the ideas are mine and I’m not very creative. I just wanted something to fill up my desert area for the super world that I’m in the process of making.
Finally!
0:10, you just made an anxiety machine out of a non-creator game!
Mario maker 2 devs, stop being lazy
It's likely noy laziness and more just accomodating for the fact that it's a course maker game, so if a lot of Boos were placed dowm and had sweat come off them with ghost auras it'd lag the game. As well as making the style look more consistant with the others visually and gameplay wise. However I do think they could have done more to make the NSMBU style more appealing in Marip Maker
1:04 mario was harmed turing the making of this video he broke his arms
