Ground pound now does a drum roll when you're falling, and finishes it with a cymbal when you hit the ground. EDIT: The BGM's percursion only plays when you're moving. Sound gets muffled when you're burrowed using the Drill Shroom or when you're a ghost. (tho I think they might be different) Elephant swaps the main instrument from whatever it is to brass, but the other power-ups don't seem to. The note blocks plays notes according to the melody so they're never out of tune. In some of the "musical" stages where the enemies sing or play a song, they're not playing pretend there, if you interact with them, like killing them or stunning them, it'll change the song accordingly. There's instances where if you time your jump to the rythm of the song you'll get a special animation along with a cheer from your character (it's also required for some puzzles).
Exactly! That's such a perfect for for the ground pound. Though hardly anyone seems to notice it. I also like how the instrumentation changes to brass (or something) when transformed into an elephant.
@@cube2fox Yeah, that's pretty cool as well. Tho, I was hopeful that the other power-ups would have different instruments as well, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Unless they change something less noticeable and I didn't catch it.

The New Super Mario series seemed like it was holding on to the retro games too much. Everything from sound effects and the visuals. Wonder seems to want to go past the old games
Whats ironic is they failed even at that. The changes from 1 > 2 > 3 > world are astronomical. You got different kinds of games, none of them were clones (except for OG mario 2). Same can be said for mario land series. It was such a huge misstep to continue the new series the way they did, when the precedent was already there to do completely new thing each iteration. Makes me wonder what the corporate structure was like, who made those calls and why.
That is the reason Nintendo has worked for so long. They kept what made it loved. They kept the old fan base so they introduced it to their kids. More entertainment companies should follow.
As much as a massive breath of fresh air Wonder is, it’s import to note that the time of its Switch re-release in 2019, NSMB U, when nearly a decade removed from the frequent release schedule of NSMB games that it was originally released under back in 2012, effortlessly outsold not only its Wii U version, but the Wii U console itself. A game can’t do that by being undeserving of existence in the first place. Nintendo do basically mishandled the NSMB series in a way that made its most thoughtfully crafted game come off as completely unremarkable. I would give any kid new to games NSMB U as their first 2d Mario, it’s a great game and makes the new aspects of Wonder all the more thrilling.
Mario is just a massive brand that will sell basically anything to little kids which is why the Deluxe version did well plus the general unpopularity of the Wii U hence why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe became the best selling mario game of all time I think the problem was Nintendo treating the New Super Mario series as your typical launch titles. Like sure it makes sense but the rushed development made every game aesthetically look and feel the same. They’re basically video game fast food The New Supes series did its job but overstayed its welcome and didn’t evolve beyond another 2D mario game. I think if the New Supes series was kept as a trilogy, and Mario U was something different people wouldn’t be so sour to it. Or heck if U just put more effort into a different art style i think it would’ve been more liked If im honest i think U has some of the best level designs and Wonder took a lot more inspiration from U than people think. Like people bring up the walking Pirhana plants but that was in U or the Giant level. The problem is U didn’t treat them as anything special so it became background noise. Wonder isn’t all that drastically different mechanically from the New Supes game (and in fact is downgraded in some ways like no triple jump) but its art style change made people love it
I went into Wonder without expectations really, I didn’t feel the hype for the game but I am a Mario fan so I was gonna buy and play it anyway. Finished the first world today and my gosh, it’s so much fun! I did not expect this quality for a 2D Mario game at all. It is creative, it’s visually pleasant to the eyes and the quality is (at least in the first world) consistent. This game is such a surprise and I love playing it a few hours after a long Spider-Man 2 session to relax and just have a good time
Wonder makes U look straight up unfinished by comparison wow! the animations really do add that next level of charm that makes it so much more enjoyable to play
The only time mario even looked remotely like a "soulless robot without expression" was in the very first game because of the technical limitations giving him a basic design and animations. The irony when you are a Minecraft fan. The characters in that game are the most soulless robotic looking things I've ever seen in a game from the mid 2010s. Mario bros 3 from 1988 had more expression in the characters than that game.
What I find so exciting about this astounding upgrade in all aspects of fidelity is that nothing about it is due to an increase of performance, it's all just more time, craftmanship and love put into it. I hope that the team had fun, that the project was associated with unusually low levels of stress and that it sells exceptionally well so that labors of love become less of an anomaly in this industry. It really feels like the Link's Awakening of the Mario franchise but better in a lot of ways.
I'm freaking loving this game for its bite sized levels that are perfect for a quick fix or just binge playing an entire world trying to get all the Wonder seeds in that area. I can see myself playing it over again once I beat it.

It’s so weird how everyone wants the narrative to be dunking on the New SMB series. New SMB U came out ELEVEN years ago. Yes, there’s no question that Wonder is a more daring and impressive release, but why can’t we just appreciate the fact that the New SMB series were fine 2D platformers during a time when that genre was in a lull, and now we’re seeing the next generation. I personally loved seeing New SMB U most of all because it was the first time a Mario game was presented in HD, which was amazing in itself.
Rayman origins and donkey kong country returns came out before NSMBU and were a lot more daring than the latter. @@taelin-rh3wiWonder showed how much an art style change can make a difference. Honestly I like the mechanics of New series better because of the triple jump and better speed running but wonder’s setting makes it stand out more. It’s bittersweet to see the end of the new series but it was necessary. Maybe if Mario 2 and U did more to stand out and change the art style things could’ve been different
funnily enough, mario wonder is so stupidly pleasant and cheerful and wonderful that it actually makes me feel bad for all the random creatures we're flattening into goo. the goombas were easy to stomp and forget before because they didn't feel like living beings. now they're just like.. chilling, sleeping together, wandering around, and get visibly terrified when mario gets near or kills one and i'm like. i'm so fucking sorry you don't deserve this. the more alive the enemies feel the more mario feels like a genocidal maniac
I was wondering that, too. I think they're the same size, but when you get hit, Mario's model size increases at the beginning of the animation by maybe 5% and shrinks back down to where it was just to give a visual representation of losing your power.
That downtime between death and getting back into the game is what stopped me so far to finish Luigi version of new super Mario bros u deluxe (as I die more there). I’m so glad to see it fixed!
I love the game so far. It really plays more like Super Mario World than New Super Mario Bros. And thank god the soundtrack is sooooo miuch better. At the end I couldn't stand the New Mario Bros. soundtrack anymore. The sequenzes from older games in Wonder are great as well.
The old "New" Mario's looks and animations are just a bit plain. Mario felt behind when looking at things like Rayman Origins and Legends, so happy to see that Wonder upgrades so significantly!
Did anyone else notice this game uses a lot of Yoshi's Island sound effects? The 1-up jingle and the red coin sound effect are the big ones I keep hearing, but maybe there are others. It makes me a little happy
I love how this now animation stile weve been seeing in animated movies is finally bleeding into games. Although it kinda started on games thanks to Guilty Gear Xrd and Dragonnall Fghterz. Thanks arcsys.
For decades I stopped caring about 2d Mario because it just felt stale and lifeless with the "new" series. Wonder finally changed that. It's simply night and day.
Unpopular opinion that no one is acknowledging during this honeymoon stage. I agree though. NSMBWU gets a lot of flack for not being visually inventive, but the game itself is pretty excellent.
@@booski1865 NSMBUs only stage design flaw is that the levels have poor space management sometimes (lots of the levels only take up a small part of the screen ) and the hidden stuff is often randomly hidden behind a fake wall with no indicator it's a fake But yes.. NSMBUs levels are pretty excellent. I struggled on some of them way more than any wonder levels
@@Dilopho I vaguely remember that. One thing I generally love about 2D Mario stages is when there's a spot that seems unnecessary to the layout there's usually a secret there. But I've been replaying Yoshi's Island kinda off and on with Wonder, and I still think Yoshi's Island is the better game, and probably my favorite 2D platformer in general. But like you said, glad to see the spark Wonder has.
They took the smash ultimate queue of making the characters face the screen instead of forward, and for that alone it made a HUGE difference especially at first glance.
The visuals remind me of Allstars. Especially in levels with background and foreground sections. Allstara added rich pipe backgrounds in certain stages in 3. You could even make the argument that the background play resembles Mario's ability to go backstage in 3
The changes seem very minor/cosmetic when compared like this (the basic engine seems almost identical) but they make a big difference. Wonder is the first 2.5D one that I really like the look of NSMB always felt like a budget cash-in to me, I stand by that.
Really hope Nintendo learns a lot from this game and it’s success, and not just in a ‘let’s do more Wonder games!’ way. More new ideas and fun new stuff learned from past games, please!
i just played the wii and wii u and 3DS new super mario bros games to prepare for this one. I hadn't played them before this year, aside from playing the DS title 14 years ago. I see this wonder game, which ive played the first two worlds of, as a sequel to the new super mario bros games. from an extremely fresh and undiluted and unaffected perspective i don't see or feel a "world of difference".
They basically gave the new 3D models the same treatment that Arcsys has been giving to their characters to give the illusion that you're looking at hand-drawn animation as opposed to 3D models. They also did this with Link's Awakening, but from an isometric view, so I'm not quite sure why so many people are acting like this is groundbreaking...
Yeah. No doubt Wonder is gonna put the New Super Mario Bros. series into shame. It's what an 2D Mario should do. Evolved it into expanded those mechanics, gimmicks & hardware, while also still keeping it's source material or formula it's known for and also don't feel very samey, stale nor blandness as the New Super Mario Bros. games have. It doesn't have to change alot. Just expanded them as much as you could and Wonder shows.
@TheBlueMarioSmash Sorry. But I can't agree there. NSMB series ain't bad. They are somewhat good. But compared to other 2D Mario titles; especially Wonder, there average at best and mediocre at worst.
yep maybe it does but if you look at the challenge walk though both games , i will say t´to you that wonder is a bit to easy compared to deluxe u , and deluxe u has a longer gameplay than wonder
@ElisabethJensen-u1z I don't care how easy or hard Wonder might be. It still mops the floor out of any New Super Mario Bros games in terms of originality, mechanics & quality of the game and just because the other titles were longer than Wonder, doesn't mean it's better nor good. Also New Super Mario Bros. U wasn't that challenging either. Most Mario games weren't hard, with an few exceptions like Lost Levels & Luigi U.

Wonder is a breath of fresh air and a loveletter to 2D Mario games. I cant believe we got such a great 2D Mario game in 2023, but it is very much welcomed.
I would’ve loved a ending to the new super Mario bros story with style and a harder updated koopalings battle even new bosses on top of that cause this game animation is amazing. I think the game looks amazing but I guess I’m always gonna have a soft spot for the new super Mario bros games but I also think the rom hack community showed me what those games are really capable of being if more time was put into the level design
I never really noticed in previous “New” Super Mario games the fact that enemy faces don’t face the screen unlike Mario Wonder and much like the 8 and 16 bit games.
Now that wonder exists, U. And the other NSMB games just feel souless, specially the character expression just look at mario doing a ground pound in U. Compared to Wonder, in U. Mario has a souless stare is his eyes, but in wonder Mario has expression, you can see the pain in jis face from hitting the ground at such high force
I really loved the new Super Mario Bros games but even I admit that after playing Wonder I don't think I could ever go back and replay after how amazing Wonder has been
If that’s a the case then it just seems like aesthetics is all the really matters to you. Good platformers are still good platformers no matter how they look and sound compared to what came after.
@Vetusomaru The difference is that each NES Mario games and the SNES Mario games has different layout & designs and they introduced things that not only became staple of the series, but the games as an whole were new & different and they hold up remarkably well. Same with 3D Land & 3D World. New Super Mario Bros though, it's the same thing since the DS game. Nothing new, nothing incredible. Just the same game as we've already played before and that is tiresome.
@@cgk1276 Oh no, I still love them. I mean that combined with the animations, the graphics and all the new creative stuff it would be hard to go back and replay them because all this new stuff is so good
Great comparison Nintendo really put in ton of hard work into this game rather than copy and paste like nsmb U. Wonder is really a massive upgrade from U and it drew people back into 2d Mario
the differences are in the names. "new super mario bros" is just a NEW super mario bros, like the original. it has the same level of spectacle as smb1 but with touched up visuals and models. super mario bros wonder is a completely new entry in the series, like smb3 or super mario world (officially recognized as smb4), so it feels different from all the other games that came before it
6:12 I'm biased against the original 8-bit pipe sound, because I think that sound is incredibly iconic. As a result, I can't stand the new xylophone sound.

Am I crazy or do fire flowers make you grow just a little bit in Wonder? I keep seeing Mario shrinking just a bit when I get hit as Fire Mario
I was wondering that, too. I think they're the same size, but when you get hit, Mario's model size increases at the beginning of the animation by maybe 5% and shrinks back down to where it was just to give a visual representation of losing your power.
Wait, there's still so much more to explore about this game. I needed more of this analysis 😂
The difference is so stark and significant that I had to watch this video twice.
Wonder is Definitely my fav Mario bros game yet it’s just such a big improvement and so much more visually appealing
You made me realise I never took damage from a goomba during my 100% completion of the game, so I'm discovering the animation here lmao
The old "New" Mario's looks and animations are just a bit plain. Mario felt behind when looking at things like Rayman Origins and Legends, so happy to see that Wonder upgrades so significantly!
Wait, what did you say at 0:27 ??? NES Mario throws fireballs with his "right" hand, not "left". 21st century Mario does throw with his left hand.
Have you tried 3D Land and World? Those have lots of similarities with the classic 2D Mario games.
As much as I love how full of fresh life wonder is, I have to say I prefer the stage designs in NSMB games, they're longer and harder
Unpopular opinion that no one is acknowledging during this honeymoon stage. I agree though. NSMBWU gets a lot of flack for not being visually inventive, but the game itself is pretty excellent.
@@booski1865 NSMBUs only stage design flaw is that the levels have poor space management sometimes (lots of the levels only take up a small part of the screen ) and the hidden stuff is often randomly hidden behind a fake wall with no indicator it's a fake
But yes..
Fantastic comparison. Thanks for the video. Have been playing Wonder and loving it. Interesting to see the differences!
2:10 Mario now has a sonic side mouth
There is no comparison, this game is way better
They took the smash ultimate queue of making the characters face the screen instead of forward, and for that alone it made a HUGE difference especially at first glance.
Inject that creativity right into my veins.
The visuals remind me of Allstars. Especially in levels with background and foreground sections. Allstara added rich pipe backgrounds in certain stages in 3. You could even make the argument that the background play resembles Mario's ability to go backstage in 3
One thing to remember is that NSMB DS was built off Mario 64 DS, so stuff like the jump is taken from that game and well, it isn’t the best
The changes seem very minor/cosmetic when compared like this (the basic engine seems almost identical) but they make a big difference. Wonder is the first 2.5D one that I really like the look of
NSMB always felt like a budget cash-in to me, I stand by that.
Nice comparison. Lets us appreciate how far we've come.
Really hope Nintendo learns a lot from this game and it’s success, and not just in a ‘let’s do more Wonder games!’ way. More new ideas and fun new stuff learned from past games, please!
Seeing them side by side is a world of difference.
i just played the wii and wii u and 3DS new super mario bros games to prepare for this one. I hadn't played them before this year, aside from playing the DS title 14 years ago.
I see this wonder game, which ive played the first two worlds of, as a sequel to the new super mario bros games. from an extremely fresh and undiluted and unaffected perspective i don't see or feel a "world of difference".
I swear the new p switch song sounds like a song from the Interstellar score
There was actually rain in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 during ship levels
That was classic mario, not NSMB
They basically gave the new 3D models the same treatment that Arcsys has been giving to their characters to give the illusion that you're looking at hand-drawn animation as opposed to 3D models. They also did this with Link's Awakening, but from an isometric view, so I'm not quite sure why so many people are acting like this is groundbreaking...
Thanks for the demo and info, I was wondering the differences, and this video is a great breakdown
@@jaretco6423 more harder and more challenge there is in deluxe u , i completed both games and it was more easy in wonder ,, that i know when i played both else i didnt put my comments on it in here
and i really hate that look with that elefant on mario that they could have been without in wonder
So this is why we can walk in a straight direction on the world map
Where can I find the developer behind the scenes presentation on how the game was made?
I would really like to see the Mushroom Kingdom reimagined to be as fleshed out and zany as the Flower Kingdom. Make it a spiritual remake of Mario’s first adventure
Wonder is a breath of fresh air and a loveletter to 2D Mario games. I cant believe we got such a great 2D Mario game in 2023, but it is very much welcomed.
That’s a great comparison!
The music often feels very Dragon Quest in the best way possible
Wonder is the Super Mario World of modern 2D Mario
I would’ve loved a ending to the new super Mario bros story with style and a harder updated koopalings battle even new bosses on top of that cause this game animation is amazing. I think the game looks amazing but I guess I’m always gonna have a soft spot for the new super Mario bros games but I also think the rom hack community showed me what those games are really capable of being if more time was put into the level design
Nsmb is like fast food while wonder is like a 5 star meal
That nes mario sprite uses right hand for fire flower, at least facing that direction.
I never really noticed in previous “New” Super Mario games the fact that enemy faces don’t face the screen unlike Mario Wonder and much like the 8 and 16 bit games.
We played enough New Super style-we deserve this!
This game makes me miss that cool thing they did with the music whenever you jumped on a Yoshi in Super Mario World.
That’s also in Galaxy 2 and Sunshine.
@@traviscunningham7062 yeah but it’s not the YOSHI one
But how is the replayability in Wonder?
Such a huge difference, Wonder is excellent
There is rain in odyssey and 3d world bowsers fury. Not sure if those count towards the point though 🤷♀️
It’s not “an illusion trick”, just “an illusion”.
Daisy (and maybe even yoshi?) Have been recast as well
How is the Super Mario Bros Wonder OST? Is it varied or is the music repetitive?
Wow good video wouldn’t have noticed these things
Which one do you think is better?
I mean that combined with the animations, the graphics and all the new creative stuff it would be hard to go back and replay them because all this new stuff is so good
Dude this game has a world that’s just the magicant from earthbound it’s that good
Good idea for a video !
Great comparison Nintendo really put in ton of hard work into this game rather than copy and paste like nsmb U. Wonder is really a massive upgrade from U and it drew people back into 2d Mario
the differences are in the names. "new super mario bros" is just a NEW super mario bros, like the original. it has the same level of spectacle as smb1 but with touched up visuals and models. super mario bros wonder is a completely new entry in the series, like smb3 or super mario world (officially recognized as smb4), so it feels different from all the other games that came before it
Hydrogen Bomb vs Coughing Baby
mario broes 3 SNES ver had rain
One of the best gaming channels out there
I hope Kirby gets a similiar treatment
Especially after the bland NSMB fest that was Star Allies 😀
@@dsshocktrooper7523 this was indeed the most bland Kirby Game ever.
@jogymogy3691 At least Kirby has Forgotten Land and Return to Dreamland Deluxe to make us forget Star Allies happened. 😀
6:12 I'm biased against the original 8-bit pipe sound, because I think that sound is incredibly iconic. As a result, I can't stand the new xylophone sound.
I like how the Wonder pipe sound effect sounds like Paper Mario Thousand Year Door's. But I love the OG sound too
I have always been a player that liked Mario games never the biggest fan… but I can’t stop playing Wonder it’s my favorite Mario game ever and I know that’s a bold statement.
This game is beautiful.
This game is a banger.
fam it's such a bop y'all. it's like poggers bruh. no cap it slaps. skull emoji skull emoji skull emoji mario be wildin. EVERYBODY MUST EAT
@@ianswift3521 at least you tried
The game is not trash it’s just a bit easier than previous entries it’s more vibrant and perfect for kids
Some of this comparison sounds ripped from Digital Foundry.
Our videos were posted around the same time. We greatly admire their work but there's no way we could have seen it while producing this. Just noticed similar things I suppose
HOLY SHIT THE DOWN TIME IN U WAS CRAZY
Kind of weird that you drew attention to Mario and Luigi getting new voice actors but not Daisy
Super mario bros wonder is so filled with so much personality and charm and is so colorful new Super mario bros just looks so bland and lifeless in comparison
I really like all the nsmb games a lot, i will replay them still but Wonder is amazing! Its on a complete other level of.. well everything hahaha
