The Artist is one of the best sounding Amps -no matter Digital, Tube or Analog-, period! You can use it Miced up, Direct Out with lots of Options, you have countless different versions of the Artist build in already (like a lot of different Amps in one) multiplying it with the Contour and Cab Resonance - that makes up to 4x3 and even more combinations of "different Amps" - if that makes sense! Not to mention all the build in Effects, Global EQ..........................................
I bought the Katana 50 Mkii as a practice among on the road. Fell in love with it and just purchased the Artist. Really awesome amp. Thanks you for showing me that there is a variation button. Didn't see it. Great review and a big help.
Good to see the kid and her papa interacting. She'll get pre studio experience and be able to know her way around and work a studio lab by the time she's a teen.
Man your daughter is awesome, she is your number 1 fan,I wish my son was like that but he doesn't care about classic rock music,I have a katana artist mk2 but never was able to make it read the computer dials😢
Good post. On side note I've been playing lead guitar for 40 plus years using all kinds of amps on stage; Tube, SS, digital, hybrid, floor processors run straight to the PA etc but I always come back to the tube amp, it works best for my hands and ears. But the 100 watt mkll seems to be a stage worthy amp with plenty of usable clean headroom, worth a try. P.S. your precious daughter so sweet!
I own the MKII Artist. I mic mine with a 57. It sounds pretty decent, especially for not being a tube amp. A lot of fun just messing around with Tone Studio hooked up to your laptop/pc too. Works amazingly well for the church gigs I do.
Really liking the Katana's the more that I listen to them. With the larger amp, placing it on the stand takes that speaker box off the floor and allows some of the low end resonance to go away, making it a more enjoyable clean tone tone. We used to do this with our Twin Reverbs, Super Reverbs, Vox AC-30's, and Ampeg VT-22's and VT-40's back in the day. Simply having the amp sitting on the floor made it so bass sounding you lost all your mids and high ends. We used to have wood stands custom built to raise the amp a foot off the floor and angle the amp back about 20 degrees. The difference was amazing. Love your video. Very informative.
Some people like the Orange Crush series. You can get that in a head and cab. Or you could do like I did and get the Katana Artist MkII Head with the 2x12 Waza cab. That has 2 of the same speakers that are on this. If you wanted to venture into tubes Blackstar have some good offerings that are around the same price point (just around a grand). I really think these amps punch above their weight pretty strongly.
Great video! Thanks. For best cleans, I found if use a little gain, bass under 12 o'clock -mids 3 o'clock as well as treble and then hit the variation and deep resonance. No mud. Very nice cleans. Try that ! Give your daughter a raise and maybe some musician earplugs as she will no doubt be a player 🙂 Thanks again
I've had a KTN100 MKII since release day that I just kept around the house. I loved it for practice amp and as a backup to keep in the trunk at gigs, but I never really took it seriously as a gigging amp because I always had a "good" tube amp, Mesa, Marshall, Victory etc. I'm almost 60 now and got tired of heavy tube amps and decided to give the KTN a real go at practice and I was surprised how good it sounded. So much so I bought the Artist and now that is my #1 amp. Sounds great on its own, or with pedals and it's 12 pounds lighter than my other amps.
Same here. I never thought the Katanas were real amp. In my mind they were always less than. Then one day I just realized that for the cost the amount of effects and the tone of the amp was virtually unbeatable. I’ve gone through a lot of amps and only a few even come close to this kind of price per pound so to speak. I think the low price throws people. If it’s cheap it must be junk. I needed to drop that mindset and just take it for what it is.
@@codybruce3864 Honestly it depends on how you play. If you play by yourself at home and enjoy the subtle nuances in dynamics and attack that tube amps bring then this is close but not quite there. If you are a turn it up to 10 and go player or if you are using it in a band you will probably never notice the difference in the mix.. It's an incredibly good straight up analog solid state amp (only the effects are modeled). Ever since I've gotten the Artist my DSL40 has been powered off because it sounds really good and at my age a few pounds lighter makes a big difference on those stairs lol. Again all this is IMHO. YMMV and all that :)
@@codybruce3864 Not sure if this question was for me but I can say that it feels great. I've had a few good tube amps and without directly comparing them I can't tell much of a difference. There is a more solid state feel to it but at this point I can barely tell when Im playing. In general it's a non issue for me.
Also, cutting a 4 inch circle from half inch to 3/4 inch Acoustic foam, and attaching it, centered on the speaker cone, on the grill cloth inside, goes a LONG way to taming the beaming treble.
Great demo. Make sure that you cherish every moment that your daughter spends with you because they grow up fast. They are very precious in the Lord’s eyes. She is a darling little girl and she loves her daddy. This is what life is all about..🙏🙏
There is removable rear panels if you want to remove some bass. I have the 100w head on order as i own two 4x12's and a 1x10. I own 11 amps now and most are heads. i'm not sure i like the waza craft green backs im un decided i heard a comparison using the stock cab from the normal katana and the waza. And i learned more towards the standard speakers. But its always down to personal preference. A lot also liked the waza craft.
First, I still think even the Artist is better, setting a Global EQ once via the App, to high cut and low cut into actual Guitar Frequencies. Reduces/Removes Digital artifacts in the distorted tones. Also, calling the Katana 50 stock speaker smaller, is misleading. It has a smaller magnet than the Katana 100, or the Waza in the Artist, and is rated for less wattage, but it is still a 12" speaker. But, I found the same piercing high end, shrill high end in the 100 as well. That is why I replaced the stock Katana 100 speaker with a Waza Craft. Even custom fit a removable piece on the back to attain the same amount of open/close as the Artist. In retrospect, it would have been easier, and only a little more cost, to just get the Artist.

I bought the KTN Artist combo and was blown away! Then I hooked it up to a Marshall 412 cab and had an orgasm! So, I bought the Artist head AND a 212 WAZA Cab! Heaven! 😊😊😊 Oh yeah…no computers here. But, nice to know it’s there. (I have a couple of Spark amps for sale…or gifts. Lol Same with my Marshall 100w dsl 2000’s) My only regret is that I’m in my seventieth year of life with fast approaching arthritis or something. But, other than that, I could NOT be happier! Even the wife says it sounds good! (!)
Hey have you compared those Head + 212 Waza Cab with the regular Artist combo 1x12? Do you think it's a significant upgrade from the 1x12? I'm at the crossroad between them two, i hope you can explain in detail as the item is available only at outer city near me.
@@KVJworld I’ll try, but mind you, everyone is different. I find that the combo is just the same 212 or no 212. Also, after having been playing this “rig” for about a month or so, I was finding that the WAZA speakers were hurting my ears somehow and had to face the cab up towards the ceiling, laying on its back on top of one of my Marshall cabs. Much better, but, I opted for just using only the Marshall cabs. Maybe there is a frequency I couldn’t get rid of, I don’t know. Anyway, if I just had the combo with 1 WAZA speaker, instead of buying the 212 WAZA cab, I would put that money towards a Marshall 1960 cab. (Rent the Marshall cab first?) It’s too bad that you can’t run the Marshall cab AND the WAZA speaker that comes with the combo at the same time. To run the Marshall you have to unplug the WAZA from the 8 ohm jack to plug the Marshall in. (Wait a minute! Maybe I can unplug the WAZA from the 8 ohm and put it in a 16 ohm jack with the Marshall in the OTHER 16 ohm jack? I’ll have to call somebody that knows. I mean, the speaker has to be rated for 16 ohms or higher.)
@@davidmacleod9313 yeah of course. Interesting, did you turn down the treble and still hurting your ears? I don't know man, i owned Marshall headphone and its great but somehow their amp/cab is not for me, they sound too muffled for me. Actually i'm more of a bedroom player but would long for ear candy experience for my practice/recording. I think i'll try to communicate with the sales, i'm getting either 100/212, Artist combo, or Artist head + 212 waza cab. Let's see which one suits me best!
It’s still a bullshit mic’d cab sound coming from the katana to my understanding. That is one of the things that pisses me off so terribly with modelers and the Katana.

Thanks for the review. Best piece of guitar gear I ever bought…. An amp stand. Makes dialing in an amp’s sound far more consistent and easy.
What do you think is the next best amp above this katana artist? Maybe something that emulates the tube sound better and still for metal and hard rock
