I’m searching for human nature by Michael Jackson right now , I’m gonna crank it , I haven’t heard in at least a decade. Thanks for that and great video Mike.
I have two artist mk2 combos; the stereo link is fantastic. The mk2 head with a 2x12 (or 4x12 cab) by itself sounds great, probably better than just one of the combos. Great choice, congrats.
I’ve got a boss katana 50, and the longer I’ve had it, the better it sounds. You pick up so many little quirks about it while using it, what it does well, what it doesn’t, etc. For those looking to spice up their tones, try and dial in your sound as close as possible with just the amp selector, volume / gain, and eq knobs, then add effects to taste.
I've been a roadie years back, doing shows...and ran a sound and light company for a time. It is a job for the young and those with strong backs! Moving PA cabinets is a lot of work, even with hand trucks and dollies. And you pray there arent any stairs! Oh, to hope for a freight elevator!! It can wear you out quickly if you aren't careful. Careful is the watch word here. One slip up can ruin a rack of amps, a big speaker cabinet, the mixing board!! So you do not rush anything. That's why we show up at noon to set up...and finish tearing down and packing it all away by 3am or later...and then on the road to the next big...300 miles away. What a great life. Live the music business.
Katana Artist combo has been my main amp for the last couple years, and it's just perfect. It just works, it works for any genre, it covers every base, I've never even connected it to a computer
i have tried them, but i wouldn't say it is perfect. i have a two rock, a 3 monkeys, a dumble, a vintage tweed deluxe, they are all much better than the katana.
@louis cyfer maybe true but way beyond the point of diminishing returns with those amps. When 1 katana with tone studio tweaking can get you 90 ish maybe more percent of the way there. And no tube issues and an attenuator built in.
Recently bought a katana bass amp for my 16 year old who has a weekly gig at a local church. He was using a 150 watt ampeg that he was borrowing which was ok. The katana is only 65 watts but it is louder and more full sounding. Add in all the other features and stuff and he’s really enjoying it. I know they are well known with guitar players but their new bass amps are carrying on the tradition of quality stuff.
I recently picked up the Artist head myself, and it's quickly becoming my one and only amp. There's really no end to the sounds you can get out of it, especially that it takes pedals so well. My tube snob days just may be a thing of the past.
I Ordered one yesterday and it arrives on Tuesday cant wait for it to arrive ! got it at a decent price £579 it was the last one on Amazon. I already own the mk1 katana head and loved that, But the artist blew me away its the first solid state amp i've heard that to my ears emulates a valve amp pretty accurately, I own around 11 amps now some tube amps some solid state. And i'm now thinking of selling a lot of them on to create space. im a big Boss fan i have a large guitar size flight case pedal board full of boss pedals.
I've had my MK 2 Katana 100w head with the 2x12" cab, and I have absolutely LOVED it ever since I picked it up. I think I paid $350 for the head and $200 for the cab from a guy on Reverb selling an hour away from my house so it was an insane deal. I have my own tones that I've built from the ground up but there's some Facebook groups that share patches with eachother and that has made it even better!
"This thing is way bigger than I thought it would be" Yeah that was she said!!! Sorry it was right there. Anyway solid state amps and Moduler amps have come along way. This is a great time to be a guitar player cause you can get amazing tone from an affordable price. And the Katana Artist is a prime example of that. Great overview of this amazing amp.Amazing video my man!!!
neato. getting 2 different, upgraded speakers will help give the stereo sound a bit more character too. you can even get an external A/B switch to allow you to turn one, or the other off, so you have 1x12. The best thing about the SS amps is that they work so well with other digital tech. Tubes always throw a bit of a hiccup in the process, even if they're fun. Cheers.
Since the Katana came out, I've felt that a head and 2x12 would be my rig of choice for my next project. Inexpensive, great cleans, great with pedals in front of it and the modeling and configuration options just add a ton of great sounding tones and value. Cool video. Thanks.
I actually made a 2×8" cabinet, with the top sealed, bottom vented, and separate inputs for each. I was hoping to be able to change the grill material on the head to match, but after removing about 12 screws I still couldn't get it off. So the head and cab don't match in looks, but sound incredible together
The Boss stuff is so good for a grab-and-go sound that’s already good. I’ve got an old Roland Micro Cube. Like having a few simple amps, can take anywhere.
Hey buddy, I have 5 tube amps. 1 Marshall TSL 60 1 Peavey JSX 120, 1 Peavey Original 5150 1 Fender Princeton 1 Fender Twin Reverb and a few solid state as well Fender Champ Roland JC 90 Plus software like Guitar rig, Amplitube etc but I gotta tell ya I have 2 100 Watt M2 Katanas A 1x12 and a 2x12. I run them in stereo with the stereo expand and holy moly man, it’s awesome. I spend hours in the Katana Tone Studio. Dialing in a killer clean with the Graphic EQ and the Parametric EQ is so awesome. I’ve built a few high gain tones but the cleans are the best. I just purchased a Richie Kotzen Tele and it’s easily the best sounding guitar I’ve ever owned and I’m up over 40 guitars in my life so far. The neck is big but I have big hands so I’ve gotten used to it and now really love it. I like playing my American Professional 2 Strat the most for feel but that Tele has a tone and clarity that’s truly unbelievable. If you ever plug one in you’ll see. It will floor you guaranteed. I have a Pink Floyd shine on you crazy diamond tone that I built for the katana using my Strat, but when I plugged the Tele into that tone I was absolutely blown away
There is so much to get into with these katanas. Especially the artists. I messed with one for a few minutes one day and never even broke the settings out. Just mainly moved the premaps a bit. There's so much to tune in. Tone for anyone.
I bought a Katana Head a couple years back. I run it through an ancient Peavey classic 50 4x10. When at the 50 watt setting it is a real barn burner. I’m embarrassed at how much I like it.
If you like this, I highly recommend checking out the Fender Mustang GTX 100, I'd love to see you do a video on it and compare. Its got so much versatility, you can get profiles of pretty much any fender amp, AC30, SLP/JCM800, and even Mesas or the EVH 5150. Along with that you can get every effect pedal you want in a virtual chain. Plus, it has a killer app you can connect to, makes the experience almost like working Spotify for a guitar rig, and people can upload their own presets. It's kind of like a Helix but packaged into a combo amp with a Celestian speaker to make the profiles feel more present. I was debating between this and the Katana and ended up going with this after some research and trying them out locally.
Had a mustang iii before I got the boss Mustang defiantly had a better pedal board operation let alone came with the damn amp and didn’t have to buy separate Boss sounds better though
@@zues2013 Nice! I actually passed on the Mustang III when I bought my second tube amp. I was initially looking for solid state because I wanted a good practice amp with headphones but got sucked into an AC15. This was my second attempt to get a good solid state. I tried the GTX100 (the newer model) in GC compared to the Katana, and I actually preferred it. It sounded way better than I remember the III sounding, and once I got it I found that there's an EQ setting you can turn on that makes it sound even more present and tube-like.
Dude you have my recording desk. Sweet. Also did you know there’s a partition in tone studio where you can access a lot of other patches. Super secret.
Hi Really enjoyed your katana MII head & cab review. I sold my Mesa Boogie MK5. Reason to heavy. I have ordered my cab and head and looking forward to it. Thanks
I've been plugging into a Katana for about a year and I absolutely love it. I just traded my Artist in for a head because I prefer plugging into the PA and the head (without a speaker) weighs half as much. These are great amps!
This one is a must. Gotta have it. I recently bought the smaller version and just a few days ago saw the release of this behemoth. I don't like the control panel on the top rear of the amp so I'm giving the original to a good buddy of mine. I have several 2 x12 cabs with Creamback 65's, Creamback 75's, and and an old pair (40+ years) G12-65's so that should be an abundance of different tones. Thanks for the review Mike!
I love the warmth of tubes but it’s inevitable, these new SS modeling amps are getting so good. You can get great sounds from 1 amp instead of having 6. Love your view point.
I have 0 interest in pedals and the products he uses but Mike's storytelling feels so relatable. He's basically Rhett shull without the entitled boomer persona
I bought the MK1 Katana head when it released and after only 3 days in the studio I put it on my amp shelf and hadn't touched it since. Fast forward to 5 days ago when my studio monitors crapped out on me and i needed something in a pinch to practice with. I pulled the head off the shelf, did the tone studio update and was supremely impressed. Well then I started looking at the MK2 range and found a used MK2 artist head for a very reasonable price. should be here tomorrow. Can't wait. Note: for my ears i have to cut the 16khz by -4.9 db using the graphic eq. Once I did that the amp stopped being a pokey fizz box to a crappy rock machine. If you like edge of break up tones try the crunch channel with the gain in the 20s, the master on full, and the channel volume to taste. so touch sensitive.
Solid states are so underrated by the market. Most of the “bad sounding” ones just need a speaker upgrade. The Roland Cubes are excellent if you can find them. I also have an old Yamaha solid state from the 70s that’s incredible. I really want to get a Roland JC-120 some day.
Totally agree, those Cube amps especially are a great testament toward what a good solid state can be. I'm still a big fan of the old "Flextone" series of Line6 combos. These Katana amps remind me of them a little bit, but still very unique and modern. I wouldn't mine owning one but I have too many good plugins to play through my studio monitors to justify spending more money on something like this.
80% of the sound you get from an amp comes from the speaker. You can put a kick ass speaker in something as lame as an old gorilla from the 80’s and get a good enough amp out of it. It’s funny how we all focus on the gear that effects the actual tone the least lol…
@@Ottophil Pickups make a pretty trivial difference to tone unless you're playing perfectly clean. The preamp section of your amp however makes a massive difference and isn't magnetic. But hey, at least you didn't mention tonewood.
I am a BIG lover of the Katana. I have the 100 watt MK ii, 1x12, and it does pretty much everything I could ever want, as a solo artist, or with my duet. I play both my PRS Standard 24, and my Ovation acoustic through it, and it just sounds fantastic.
That Vox you had works wonders- gets you in the pedal game if you want those far out sounds. I think yours came with the green back- think Marshall 70’s sounds. The blue back is a bit more bright but sounds more like the old school Vox sounds- Brian may, early beatles, stones, pixies, Radiohead
I bought the artist 2k last summer. Need to spend some more time programming. I use my line hd500x for fx ect. Quite a few good vids about accessories and tricks tips ect
Heck,I like this channel! Thanks,Hombre. We have a studio full of all kinds of tube amps but we will always keep a Katana head plugged into a channel, with BTS raring to go! Two make the best stereo rig. Cheers-
That amplifier sounds so good and clean and other sounds I've have a strat with Texas specials Ibarra pick ups again didn't realize what I had and pearly gazes wheuuu sweet sounds
Hey Mike. I really enjoy your videos format and your sense of humour. Best bang for your buck SS amp i have ever tried is to this day the Peavey Studio Pro 112. Found it for around 80$ used. As for a really amazing Fender tone from any amp you should give Joyo American Sound. I have found it really effective!
I have a peavey 6505 (i know, different genre and all) and a boss katana air practice amp. And oh my does the katana cater to all mg needs at home. After a lot of practice amp fails, the katana knocks it out of the park
Hey ! Really dig your videos! You say you don't want to disturb your neighbours, but I see there is a Vox AC 15? 30? in the back... Do you use it at home?
Good afternoon brother really interesting video. But my question is, Is this "head Amp" suitable for Ibanez professional bass guitar to be used with??? Thanks
Curious if you ever looked into the Neural DSP Corey Wing plugin? It would satisfy your need for getting a mix ready tone and it normally goes on sale for half off during Christmas. I feel you'd enjoy the higher end plugins based on the reason you enjoy the katana.
That sounds good but I’m not a computer buff. I’m 60 years old learning how to play guitar on my own for a hobby so I’m looking for a amp that would be good for me. hey what about that Vox amp that you have behind you in the video
@@RFV1962 Gotcha! I've used them all...Vox,Line6,Fender,etc but none beat the Katana for all around everything. Turning knobs and getting a good tone is easy but the BTS is for fine tuning. A Katana combo is less than 300 bones? I use the Katana mkII head,it has its own 5 inch speaker. Have fun, good luck!
If you can ever get your hands on a first generation Yamaha G100B-212 I very highly suggest them. I got one in the 80s and still have it today Incredibly clean, and versatile and you can get a very chunky sound out of them. Just be sure everything is original especially the speakers
I have the Artist Mk2 combo. It’s a fantastic amp but part of me now wants the new head and cab 😂 Here in Australia the combo can be had for half the price of the head and cab. Got to weigh up any benefits.
What do you think about the closed/open back options for the cab? I have been messing with my Katana 50 mk1 and recently got some legacy software that is still supported for it because I think it can't use the tone studio. It is pretty cool. That got me into messing with my Mustang I mk1. I noticed my tones were nicer on the Fender, and when further comparing the two, the mustang had a closed back cab and the Katana was an open back.
Brown is more of a hot rodded Marshall sound, think early Van Halen. I think lead has more gruff personally. Still man, those are some legit great tones!
Does that head have a speaker or 2 behind the grill? I have the 100 mk1 and it has a speaker in the head that can be used with 50 watts and lower. At 50 watts it actually gets pretty loud but very clean still
Hey man, you said you’re gonna buy a footswitch but didn’t tell which footswitch you are going to buy. I recommend you to check out the Studio rats review about Xsonic Airstep Kat edition! That’s so dope and even more versatile than the ga-fc. Love your content by the way. I have an Artist mkII and I’m kind of struggling to get a proper Frusciante sound out of it. I think my cleans or gritty cleans are okay, but I’d like to find a ds-2 like solo sound without any external pedals. Please make a video where you create your Frusciante sound! I bet I’m not the only one who would be eager to see you do so. 😊
>Heaviest setting the amp offers
>Plays a low-gain darkness riff
Well played Mike, Well Played.
Love your work mike, glad to see your channel grow!
Man, I love my Katana. And dude, your videos are getting better and better. You've really got something going here. Keep it up!

I have two artist mk2 combos; the stereo link is fantastic. The mk2 head with a 2x12 (or 4x12 cab) by itself sounds great, probably better than just one of the combos. Great choice, congrats.
Have you checked out the distortion mod effects (all hidden in the studio), on top of crunch or brown? It can get real metal...
Thanks!
THANK YOU SO MUCH MAN!

Indeed. For me the Treble Booster at low settings was a bit of a game changer l. Also really digging into the variety of EQ options.

80% of the sound you get from an amp comes from the speaker. You can put a kick ass speaker in something as lame as an old gorilla from the 80’s and get a good enough amp out of it. It’s funny how we all focus on the gear that effects the actual tone the least lol…
Changing the speaker in my AVT made a huge difference. It still wasn't great, but it was quite improved.
Its all about magnetics. The most important things to tone. Pickups. transformers, and speakers. All magnetics
@@Ottophil Pickups make a pretty trivial difference to tone unless you're playing perfectly clean.
The preamp section of your amp however makes a massive difference and isn't magnetic.
But hey, at least you didn't mention tonewood.
Nice tones and at a very good price 🤘
New subscriber here. I really enjoy your videos. Awesome.
dude you are good on guitar. i like your guitar content. sub
Hey Mike, try a Fender Cyber twin or Cyber Deluxe. The twins were like $1400 new, bought mine for $239 used at guitar center. Have a great day👍
Congratulations thanks for watching and supporting you won my prize Hit me up now🎊🎊
I am a BIG lover of the Katana. I have the 100 watt MK ii, 1x12, and it does pretty much everything I could ever want, as a solo artist, or with my duet. I play both my PRS Standard 24, and my Ovation acoustic through it, and it just sounds fantastic.
Hey hit me up right now👆👆you won my random giveaway prizes🎮🎄
Bro... your "unboxing" scissor work is out of this world 😅😅😅
Keep up the good work, Mike! Love your content, enthusiasm, and demeanor. To God be the glory!
Congratulations you are selected in my random giveaway winners kindly Hit me up now 🏆🎸
Just got the Katana 110w Bass amp. The tones are killer.
Congratulations you are among my shortlisted winners📦📦kindly Hit me up now🎮👆
I use one for recording and live sets and its incredible
You have a great rig set up and it sounds good I use to buy from heritage guitar and now Ebay And Reverb
Get a red stripe peavey bandit… you’ll love it
I have a peavey 6505 (i know, different genre and all) and a boss katana air practice amp. And oh my does the katana cater to all mg needs at home. After a lot of practice amp fails, the katana knocks it out of the park
I've honestly been wanting this new boss katana artist head, it seems so versatile and bridges the gap so well
Funny you post this because yesterday on Friday I got me the Boss Katana MK2 100W. This thing is stupid loud but I think yours wins lol
Congratulations your among my winners cheerfully send a message to me immediately to claim your 🎸
New year prize 📦📦
Hey ! Really dig your videos! You say you don't want to disturb your neighbours, but I see there is a Vox AC 15? 30? in the back... Do you use it at home?
I gig a katana every week. 60,weeks out of last 55. Never fails
The katana is actually a digital modeler, if you want to try a solid state go for a Quilter. it is a one way ticket.
Hey hit me up right now👆👆you won my random giveaway prizes🎮🎄
Not really a modeler,tho.
That pink telecaster is sick
Yes u finally brought out the pink tele again!!
Congratulations you are among my shortlisted winners📦📦kindly Hit me up now🏆👆..
Good afternoon brother really interesting video.
But my question is, Is this "head Amp" suitable for Ibanez professional bass guitar to be used with???
Thanks
Dude you have so much to learn. And I mean that in the best way possible.
ok, mike i gotta know where did you get the desk in the background in the beginning of the video, i must know
It really is a terrific platform. And I don't even own one.
Great amp. Good choice.
Oh yes Sweetwater has been the go to for guitar equipment I see now I have a catalouge and subscription
Curious if you ever looked into the Neural DSP Corey Wing plugin? It would satisfy your need for getting a mix ready tone and it normally goes on sale for half off during Christmas. I feel you'd enjoy the higher end plugins based on the reason you enjoy the katana.
Nice video I would like for you to compare the boss katana to the fender champion 100 XL and see which one is better thanks
Katana,by faaaaar
Why !
@@RFV1962 Boss Tone Studio
I got one in the 80s and still have it today
Incredibly clean, and versatile and you can get a very chunky sound out of them.
Just be sure everything is original especially the speakers
Congratulations you are among my shortlisted winners📦📦kindly Hit me up now🏆👆
Getting harder and harder to tell if its solid state or not by just listening
What were your clean and crunch settings? want to try it on my katana, sounds so good!
I have the Artist Mk2 combo. It’s a fantastic amp but part of me now wants the new head and cab 😂 Here in Australia the combo can be had for half the price of the head and cab. Got to weigh up any benefits.
That tele man, it sounds so good. Anyone know what happened to 357 guitars? There facebook page seems inactive and their website is gone.
I traded in a Marshall tube amp for a blackstar ID 260 and haven't looked back since.
Congrats on your purchase
8 months later. does it still float your boat?
Instantly got rid of my Marshall Jubilee for a Katana, never going back 👍🏼👍🏼
What do you think about the closed/open back options for the cab? I have been messing with my Katana 50 mk1 and recently got some legacy software that is still supported for it because I think it can't use the tone studio. It is pretty cool. That got me into messing with my Mustang I mk1. I noticed my tones were nicer on the Fender, and when further comparing the two, the mustang had a closed back cab and the Katana was an open back.
Brown is more of a hot rodded Marshall sound, think early Van Halen. I think lead has more gruff personally. Still man, those are some legit great tones!
Congratulations fan you are among my new year giveaway winners kindly Hit me up right now to claim your prize Immediately 🎸👆
But does it chug?
Love your excitement :D
Does that head have a speaker or 2 behind the grill? I have the 100 mk1 and it has a speaker in the head that can be used with 50 watts and lower. At 50 watts it actually gets pretty loud but very clean still
try getting a second one and slaving two together, good times.
Income tax ain’t even hit and bro is buying all the gear out there! His collection is about to go boom 💥 😆
