Something that I really loved about this episode that continued getting expanded on in future episodes was the fact that the writers gave Jerry and Theresa their own lives before marriage. Most Disney shows never treat parents as anything more than just parents, and treat them as people who have everything figured out. Meanwhile with Wizards, we saw that Jerry and Theresa sacrificed so much to be with each other. In this episode, we learned that Jerry had to sacrifice his powers, something that he's been working towards his whole life, just to be with Theresa, meanwhile in a future episode, we learned that Theresa had to sacrifice her connection with her family in order to raise her wizard kids, and in Hispanic culture, family is everything. The writers giving both Jerry and Theresa lives before their marriage and showing that they both had to make sacrifices for their relationship to work will always be something that I respect them for for, because as supernatural as Wizards is, that message of sacrifice is so true to life.
I love when they break down and talk about the episodes. Wow 2008 was a long time ago and I remember watching this episode like it was yesterday 😂😂😂💜🪄🔮
One thing I really love about wizards of waverly place is that I actually cared about Jerry and Theresa. There were many other Disney shows where the parents just kind of felt like filler because they had to be there. But I loved Jerry and Theresa being a part of the stories or having their own stories.
In the beginning of the show its said that wizards can't marry non wizards, but by season 4 it turns into mortals can't marry non mortals. When Alex wants to give up on the competition in season 4 she's told that she can't date Mason as a mortal bc he's a werewolf. I assume that David's dream ending for the show also wouldn't have had that plot line in the last season.
I know they’re not happy but tbh they don’t matter when it comes to viewers. Given that the show ended early bc max was too young it was one of the best show endings (the movie). So I don’t think anyone cares they didn’t like it. And wait they reinvented Harriet the spy?!? Michelle trachtenburg made that when we were kids
One of the magic artifacts from the entire show that stuck with me was the emotoscope! There was so much story potential with it and I wish they brought it back along with the wizard copier machine and magic marker among other things
36:11 the Ending was good and I enjoyed it cause it shows on how much they grown and how much they have matured. Justin admitting that Alex would have won if she didn’t come back to help him win and even her choosing to go back, telling him “I don’t want to win this way” instead of a easy win she wanted to be fair.
Happy Monday 😊 I’m so excited you’re back. This episode is amazing.😍🤩🥰 Wizards of waverly place is my favorite show on Disney Channel! 🥰❤️ I love Alex/ Selena best podcast to start Monday with❤ Merry Christmas Jen and David 🎅☃️🎄❄️
Talking about the voices made me realize how unique both of your voices are, it would be hard to find someone with the same intonation. Perfect podcast voices though haha
But in Peter’s ending, if Alex would have had to give up her powers for Mason, wouldn’t that mean that Justin would have had to give up his powers for Juliette?
@@savvyaranda When she found out that if she became mortal she could not be with Mason that is correct. But that was different writers/different rules not what Peter had planned out.
@@Jesusmendoza_ Depends on if you are talking about Peter’s version or the version after Peter left. With Peter it was any non-wizard. The writers/producers/show runners changed it in the 4th season so it was just mortals.
I love his Disney thing. Can’t wait until the Shakira episode one!!! The next episode is one of my faves too! Report Card!!! Mean Girls 2 was on tv today and I watched it for the first time.
Love you both. yes you can’t please everyone. I like all the little bits you both do to getter. Love to feel like I’m inside on some of your guys jokes and little bits.
Mr. Deluise! I had no idea you were in Robin Hood Men in Tights! I wanted to ask if you met my grandfather, Joe Dimmick?! He was Dirty Ezio! Also everyone in my family is such a huge fan of you and your father! When I would watch Wizards, my mom would tell me she watched your Dad all the time and showed me some of his movies 😊
With the alternate ending: while I like the parallel with Jerry (especially since the movie showed he was more like Alex than he let on), I don’t like the idea of Alex giving up her power for a guy. With how her family tended to look down on her I think Alex proving herself and becoming the family wizard was important.
I actually loved the ending that they were all happy, Alex needed her powers to stay with Mason, and Justin becoming headmaster! But it would be cute to see the parallel repeat of one of the kids giving up their powers to marry someone they love! I guess were getting that in the reboot now!! SInce Justin apparently marries a mortal!
Where are my Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars people at??!!! I loved the movie as a kid. I was sad when Disney Channel stopped playing several movies, and I didn't get a chance to see it again in the past 10 or so years. However, I'm excited to watch it again since I now have Peacock and Tubi
I think a better ending would be if justin won and gave his powers to alex since from the beginning he was always so smug in thinking he was gonna win it would be a good humbling moment for justin. I think with all her charcter development alex definitely deserved to keep her powers so i prefer the show ending over murieta ending. But justin giving up his powers wouldve been better.
Im pretty sure that the rule was that mortals couldnt be with any magical beings, whether that be wazards, werewolves, vapmires, etc. So if Justin lost his powers he wouldn't be able to be with Juliet and the same goes for Alex and Mason.
I love Peter’s version of the ending, but would that mean that Max becomes the family wizard like Kelbo? Alex and Justin are both with non-wizards, which obviously means neither could be wizards based on the rules in the early seasons. In season four after Peter is gone though, it is said that Alex and Mason can’t be together if she is a mortal because his instincts would lead to him eventually eating her. So based on this episode’s rule establishment, Alex would give her powers to Max, and Justin wouldn’t be the headmaster at WizTech
I’m not a fan of Peter’s ending, personally. It was really romantic to see Jerry give up his powers for Theresa, but the second it’s a strong woman giving up her powers for a man, it feels less rewarding. Alex deserved to win and to erase all her hard work by surrendering her powers to the men in her life just feels unsatisfying. Especially for Mason, who was honestly a terrible boyfriend by the end of the series. As a 10 year old girl watching the finale in 2011, I surely appreciated seeing Alex succeed (also loved the plot twist of Justin winning initially but revealing Alex to be the true winner)
While I’m not a fan of a lot of things about season 4 & think they did a lot wrong. I think Alex giving up her power to Justin the way it actually ends makes more sense to me than her doing it for mason plot twist. Mason is a god awful boyfriend & the show was always about family love not romance & especially Alex and Justin’s relationship. So this finale while not very good in general execution makes sense to me because she always wanted Justin’s approval. Plus I think both of them need to be wizards or all of them should have been human. The show message said love overall but specifically family love over all and peters ending I feel betrays the core of the show being Alex & justin.
Definitely agree about family love being the core theme. In the real finale though, Alex doesn't give her powers to Justin. She keeps her powers and Justin gets powers through Professor Crumbs (who retires from headmaster at WizTech and passes his role to Justin)@@aishwarya8241

48:59 I’m also currently learning German, David !! I have a German dictionary book and everything !! I have family in Switzerland who speak German well (Swiss German) fluently !! It’s a very hard language but it’s so fun to speak !!
Since you guys are doing the reboot you should bring up the idea of should move the reboot in the direct of getting rid of the wizard competition. I could definitely see the ending of the show
Didn’t the parallel happen though? Justin gave it to Alex because he didn’t feel right about winning because he was stuck on the branch and she helped him.
Jen is correct -- Spaniards do not consider their Spanish a lisp because that's how everyone in Spain speaks the language. However, there are still Spaniards that do have lisps. For those who aren't native Spaniards or linguists, it's challenging to tell which Spaniards have lisps because it sounds to outsiders like all Spaniards do, but native Spaniards, good linguists, and good speech pathologists can tell the difference between a Spaniard with or without a lisp. David has the origin story of the accent correct.
It’s been a while since I watched the whole series (I’m following you guys on y’all’s rewatch journey!) But the way I see it for the whole “giving up powers for a mortal” it’s implied that full wizards live an extended life, right? Like Headmaster Crumb is like 700+ years old?? And other fantasy folk like werewolves and vampires are also said to live very long lives (Juliette and Mason dated in like, the 1700s, right?) perhaps the rule is there to not expose the magic world? Like, it would be suspicious if you were an immortal living with a mortal family and everyone watched your family age while you stayed relatively young. You have to give up your magic in order to fully immerse into the mortal world.
I love David's movie trailer voice and i don't see anything wrong when he says "mmm Disney", Also.... which Michael J Fox Documentary was being referenced? :)
Wait now I’m confused…in Peter’s ending he wanted Alex to give her powers to Justin to be with Mason, but since Mason‘s a werewolf, wouldn’t she have to be a wizard in order to keep dating him? Since the rule was that supernatural people can’t be with non-supernatural people, then, by giving her powers away, she wouldn’t be able to be with him, right? Am I missing something?
Peter’s rule was wizards cannot marry non-wizards. Didn’t matter mortal or other supernatural. However Peter was unfortunately fired between seasons 3 and 4. So the writers then just made it so that supernatural people (wizards, vampires, werewolves) could not marry non-supernaturals. So that’s why. Peter had a different idea/set of rules he used when he was in charge of the show. When he was fired those ideas and world building went with him.
@@oneearrabbitbut then Justin can’t be the family wizard unless he’s not with Juliet right so it goes to max? Idk I feel while the execution of the finale was bad it makes more thematic sense to me the center family love over romantic love becoz that’s what the show is about.
@@aishwarya8241 Agreed. And according to Peter’s rules you would be correct. But that’s what happens when you fire the guy who pretty much set the groundwork for the entire series.
the whole wizard competition was so dumb; i mean they spend all those years learning magic to prepare for this only to find out the contest is decided by a footrace through a maze?
To be fair it also involved a quiz and the whole griffin test. Plus they did have to use various spells to make it through the maze/hinder the others. But I get it. I mean look at the Wizard's movie. The competition there was pretty much just a giant wizard battle. Which while kind of cool does nothing to take most of the things they learned into account.
Yeah I don’t know if I would’ve liked Alex giving her powers up for Mason…. Especially when their relationship was kind of toxic looking back. Plus, as a kid, Alex was like a fantasy for me of a girl who is smart enough to always get her way in the end. She was scrappy and cool and I liked seeing her in power. 🤷🏽♀️ It was something I wanted for myself and I liked seeing on-screen.
Hi! The dream ending wouldn’t really have fit the plot because I think it was in season 3, Alex gives up on the competition and she gets told then she can’t be with Mason is she’s a mortal. So if we got the dream ending, she wouldn’t have had to give up her powers to be with Mason. Dream ending probably would have worked if they never started the thing about mortals can’t date werewolves.
Love you two so much. Jen, if your hair bothers you...why not shave your head? 😂 But seriously, would you consider doing that for a charity fund raiser. I'm sure the podcast fans could make a lot of donations.
Yeah, the last couple seasons really tainted Justin. Not to mention he was perfectly fine leaving Harper and Zeke to die in the finale so he could finish the competition. That pretty much made him irredeemable.
At 29:18 It was the outstanding Louise Fletcher you are thinking of. I have not yet seen the film. She has been said to have been a delightful woman skilled at playing nasty people. I knew her only as Kai Winn from Star Trek Deep Space Nine and I really disliked that character for all of the evil she embodied. Louise passed away in 2022. Also when abbreviating the show as DS9 I cannot help thinking of the Deluise family on SeaQuest DSV and the early loss of Jonathan Brandis.
Listening a bit later… but Alex had to keep her powers to stay with Mason I’m pretty sure. Like a human and werewolf was a no no… not sure if that concept came up before season 4 but 🤷🏻♀️
One question I always had was if Alex won was going to be with Mason why couldn’t she keep her powers he was werewolf, not a human and they said that justin would win and get to be with Juliet but she’s a vampire so I don’t get it tbh someone explain
I LOVE Peter's ending with Alex (winning the wizard competition and) giving up her powers to be with Mason like Jerry did to be with Theresa, BUT it wouldn't really make sense. Like, first of all, Alex HAD to be a wizard in order to be with Mason because he's a werewolf. And second of all, if she was just going to give up her powers to be with Mason, then why bother even trying in the wizard competition? Like why would she try so hard to win just to give up her powers anyway?
You have to realize though you are talking 4th season regarding Mason and Chancelor Tootietootie and the Love and Romance Council rule. Peter was unfortunately fired by that point. So what Peter had planned and his vision went with him.
Something I just thought more about after watching this podcast. I assume Jerry grew up in the Wizard world since I’m also assuming his parents were both wizards. So does this mean only one child per family gets to stay in the Wizard world (Like Kelbo) and the rest get booted out and basically banished to the mortal world? The wizard world that Disney created is honestly super fucked and I just realized it🤣
True on all counts. It’s why I sided with Stevie in her whole wizard rebellion thing. It’s like “you guys in the wizard world suck and so does your way of doing things”

Listening a bit later… but Alex had to keep her powers to stay with Mason I’m pretty sure. Like a human and werewolf was a no no… not sure if that concept came up before season 4 but 🤷🏻♀️
Also people prank call using *67 before the entire number
@@oneearrabbit True. If Mason wasn't a werewolf (and was a mortal instead like Theresa was), then that ending would've made sense.
It’s like “you guys in the wizard world suck and so does your way of doing things”
alex did not have to give up her powers because mason was not human at all so she was in the clear
Jerry & Theresa have definitely kissed a few times in the show! I remember!
