DIY Wireless Remote Minn Kota Trolling Motor Steering for Boat ... Build for UNDER $200!

    I'm super excited to share this DIY video! This is a fairly large project, and it will take you a day or two to make this wireless electric trolling motor once you get all the parts (costing less than $200), but I assure you this video will show you all the steps you will need to build your own inexpensive wireless remote controlled copilot type electric trolling motor mods for your fishing boat or motorized kayak! It will have wireless steering, as well as on/off and forward/reverse, all on one controller!
    It's not necessarily a Minn Kota Terrova or Ultrex, but you can convert an off the shelf Endura transom mount kicker motor ( or any cheap trolling motor brand ) with a 12v marine deep cycle or lithium battery and make it give the functionality of wireless trolling, like Poor Man's copilot or ipilot. Other motors can be converted including Motorguide Xi3, Newport, Haswing, and Minn Kota counterparts (Riptide, Powerdrive, etc.).

    I got inspiration to do this complete step by step from viewing several youtubers' videos, namely:

    I was also excited to see if I could replicate a portable cheaper homemade version of the Autoboat, which costs about $700 to buy that than build for under $200. This does not provide the spot lock technology, but stay tuned for my upcoming project where I will make an arduino-based gps and compass anchor spot lock, like the Ulterra, XI-3, and Terrova. Also, when you add a PWM to an off-the-shelf Minn Kota cheap trolling motor, it will go from slow rotation to faster speed at variable speeds rather than the 5 set speeds and conserve the battery. You could also convert the transom mount to a bow mount with a bit of wood or off the shelf aluminum parts!

    Jason, I'm working on a similar project with my trolling motor! I've added a RC Transmitter and Receiver Remote Controller for wireless control, kind of similar to your setup. I've used some high torque servos for steering and a high amp PWM speed controller on my trolling motor. If you are interested I can share my parts list. My latest project is "Arduino" logic control over the speed controller and steering servo - I'm trying to get some autopilot or heading lock. I'm working on feeding NMEA 2000 data from my Garmin into my Arduino for autopilot. Trolling motors with wireless controls + autopilot could be $1000 - $3000, so +1 for us doing it on the cheap!

      Hi Matt, im highly interested what kind of parts you’ve used? Btw are going to create some blog or posting videos from the project? What kind of gearbox you’ve used for servo steering?

    Could you give some keywords that maybe included for the gear box, or are they just that generic?
    The hardest part for me remote automating a trolling motor has been the steering mechanism.

    Nice work! I've installed Pwm's on a couple of tm and it almost doubles the Ah. If this helps anyone, I bought a Haswing Cayman that's half the price of others, works great and doesn't need a Point One antenna! (another $300)

      It just works, simple calibration and without the 3-4k price. (24v 80lb)
