- Sergey Bogdan (Сергей Богдан), chief test pilot of the Sukhoi Company and Hero of the Russian Federation rides on his magnificient 5th generation stealth steed in the blue heavens above Zhukovskiy, Russia, performing a wonderful display of post-stall aerobatics with the Su-57 fighter aircraft during MAKS 2019 airshow on September 1st.
The Sukhoi Su-57, previously designated T-50 (Сухой Су-57 / T-50) is a single-seat, twin-engine, stealth fighter aircraft with multirole capability but designed for air superiority and attack operations. This jet aircraft is the product of the PAK-FA (ПАК-ФА, Перспективный авиационный комплекс фронтовой авиации, literally "Prospective Aviation Complex of Frontline Aviation"), a fifth-generation fighter programme of the Russian Air Force. The first prototype performed the maiden flight on January 29, 2010. Deliveries of production aircraft to the Russian Air Force are expected to begin in 2018.
The fighter is intended to succeed the MiG-29 and Su-27 in the Russian Air Force and to serve as the basis for the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) while complementing the recently built fleets of SU-35S and SU-30SM. The initial production batch are to be delivered with a highly upgraded variant of the AL-31F engine, extensively used by the Su-27 family while a totally new turbofan jet powerplant is being designed from scratch. In fact the first prototype of this engine has already been fitted into a SU-57 airframe and has already begun testing.
The Su-57 has a blended wing body fuselage and incorporates all-moving horizontal and vertical stabilizers. The aircraft incorporates thrust vectoring nozzles and has adjustable leading edge vortex controllers (LEVCONs) that improve high angle of attack behaviour. The advanced flight control system and thrust vectoring nozzles make the aircraft highly maneuverable in both pitch and yaw, enabling it to perform post-stall maneuvers such as the Pugachev's Cobra and the Bell maneuver, along with doing flat rotations with little altitude loss. The aircraft's high cruising speed and normal operating altitude is also expected to give it a significant kinematic advantage over older fighter jet generations.

Ha,ha, ha.. Nice one ... And another impressive performance by Sergey Bogdan and Su-57. Flat spin from 06:33 to 06:41 was really, really , well... Flat ! Call me crazy but I would say Su-57, is still under heavy ``leash``. It can do much better even with interim engines Al-41-F1 (izd.117).
I don't think you are crazy, I am of the same opinion. The flights seem to be performed intentionally at slow speeds, not allowing the aircraft to build energy (And hence why so many people keep saying that it doesn't fly like western jets).
Not exactly that it can do 'better' as slow maneuverability is what's really hard to achieve and already demo'd here, but certainly it's not showing what agility it can achieve flying at faster speeds.
@@Airguardian Agility is precisely what I have in mind when I said `` it is still on leash``. Not only the ``low speed acrobatics`` but much more. Now , there are many ``definitions`` of ``agility``. For example from this article : apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/p010448.pdf. (page 2-2)
Let us restrict to the ``airframe agility`` only. Su-57 showed great agility at the moments (a=dV/dt, where V is velocity vector), which is , basically definition of acceleration. I know , that you already know this. That is what I had in mind with previous comment. Honestly, I expected more G`s ( rapid changes of V), from Su-57, but I guess they still do not want to take risks ( publicly).

@@baselhammond3317 No, It does not have 3D thrust vectoring. It has ``canted`` nozzles. As far as I know, only MiG-29OVT has 3D nozzles.

Russia is long been known for its ballet. And Sukhoi has brought that tradition to its jetfighters because they are literally graceful sky-dancers.

The problem is, dancing and fighting are two very different disciplines... Of course, if we're talking about boxing or MMA
Russian jets are built for acrobatics. The future of air warfare is by dancing the fight out. Rhe winner will be judged by its dancing performance.
@@hawkray77 Not sure if you can actually call this acrobatics. Proper aerobatic planes (among which there are some Yaks and Sukhois as well) are rated from +10 to -10g and the pilots usually heavily abuse them up in the skies. But when it comes to Russian fighter planes, the pilots seem to be paying the maintenance out of their own wallet (too?), so they are ultra careful with the things. Or could it be they care for their own health that much, so they prefer not pulling a lot of gs for as long as possible...
People forget that this Su family are also superfaaaaaast mutherfuckers!

Guess it's a project for the long term. Don't expect results soon.

I know at least two more words: "slow" and "heavy". But this stands true for almost the entire Sukhoi lineup.
@@getsideways7257 it isn't slow. They intended to do it like they're merely floating on air while doing an acrobat coz it's something none from any US models of jet fighters can do.
@@imllendream Except the US have already played with TVC and didn't find it worth the trouble. Maybe you think an F-16 with a fully-articulated nozzle wouldn't be able to do this and more? Think again, it weighs only a third of this "gravity defying" thing here.
You know why Russians never do proper aerobatics, always relying on the TVC stuff instead? Because if they tried to fly like the Americans do, that would result in a very poor show and everyone would be able to see that Flankers are too heavy to be called air dominance fighters. They are heavy interceptors at best.
But Russians need to sell their stuff somehow... So they came up with a cunning plan. "Our fighters generally handle better at very low speeds... How about we strap articulated nozzles on the engines and only show thrust-vectored stuff? People don't have much brain anyway, they only know how aerodynamic aircraft fly, they'll be blown away by our thrust-vectored aircraft that looks like your typical aerodynamic machine, doing all those things!"
If you are not extremely fascinated with what Harriers do, you shouldn't be too surprised with these Sukhois' low to no speed capabilities. Again, you could strap enough thrusters to an Abrams tank and it would fly about the same, albeit not for long and even slower. Would you say it's the best tank in the world based purely on that? Same principle applies here. And the sooner Russians will understand nobody is buying this anymore (in every sense), the sooner they will come up with something actually useful (and fun to watch).
