  • If you're a fan of the movie 'Top Gun: Maverick', you've likely seen the iconic scene where the Su-57 performs a cobra maneuver followed by a yaw spin to evade Tom Cruise's F-14 Tomcat and quickly get on its tail... but did you know that this maneuver is not just a Hollywood fantasy? In this video, watch as Sukhoi's Chief Test Pilot, Sergey Bogdan (Сергей Богдан), demonstrates this incredible capability of the Su-57 with precision and finesse!!
    Bu that isn't all... get ready to enjoy the thrilling beauty of the SU-57 fighter jet as it showcases other jaw-dropping aerobatic maneuvers during MAKS 2017 as well as two-ship tight formation flight in this stunning remastered footage! From physics-defying aerobatics to mind-blowing stunts, witness the sheer power and agility of this formidable fighter aircraft!
    Captured at the prestigious MAKS 2017 airshow, this remastered video brings you up close to the action, allowing you to experience the adrenaline-pumping thrill of the SU-57 like never before. With its advanced technology and unparalleled performance, the SU-57 proves why it's in a league of its own!
    The Sukhoi Su-57, previously designated T-50 (Сухой Су-57 / T-50) is a single-seat, twin-engine, stealth fighter aircraft with multirole capability but designed for air superiority and attack operations. This jet aircraft is the product of the PAK-FA (ПАК-ФА, Перспективный авиационный комплекс фронтовой авиации, literally "Prospective Aviation Complex of Frontline Aviation"), a fifth-generation fighter programme of the Russian Air Force. The first prototype performed the maiden flight on January 29, 2010. Deliveries of production aircraft to the Russian Air Force are expected to begin in 2018.
    The fighter is intended to succeed the MiG-29 and Su-27 in the Russian Air Force and to serve as the basis for the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) while complementing the recently built fleets of SU-35S and SU-30SM. The initial production batch are to be delivered with a highly upgraded variant of the AL-31F engine, extensively used by the Su-27 family while a totally new turbofan jet powerplant is being designed from scratch. In fact the first prototype of this engine has already been fitted into a SU-57 airframe and has already begun testing.
    The Su-57 has a blended wing body fuselage and incorporates all-moving horizontal and vertical stabilizers. The aircraft incorporates thrust vectoring nozzles and has adjustable leading edge vortex controllers (LEVCONs) that improve high angle of attack behaviour. The advanced flight control system and thrust vectoring nozzles make the aircraft highly maneuverable in both pitch and yaw, enabling it to perform post-stall maneuvers such as the Pugachev's Cobra and the Bell maneuver, along with doing flat rotations with little altitude loss. The aircraft's high cruising speed and normal operating altitude is also expected to give it a significant kinematic advantage over older fighter jet generations.

      That's because this is irrelevant, none of it has any impact in combat. A plane that can stand still in air is useless and an easy target for a missile. Reality is not a movie. Just because it looks cool to you, doesn't change the fact a missile that's tracking a plane doesn't care what it looks like, it just sees an easy stationary target. You want a plane that's agile and can change direction quickly and unpredictably, because that's your only chance to dodge missiles at the last moment or perform well in dog fights. Otherwise missiles can pick you off easily. These demonstrations are absolutely irrelevant to how the plane performs in combat, it's just to impress clueless people who don't really understand how fighter jet combat looks like in reality. Su27's, Su34's and Su35's can do these fancy looking maneuvers in air as well, doesn't help them in Ukraine, and every time they enter airspace controlled by simple and rudimentary anti-air defense systems Ukraine has, which is FAR from being as good or nearly as dense and multilayered as what NATO has for example, these planes got shot down. They have an almost 100% failure rate in missions into areas without full air superiority. We saw the same in 1999 in Yugoslavia when Mig29's and F16's were meeting regularly, Mig29's literally posed no threat at all, they were easy targets.
      So yea, what looks cool on an airshow is not what wins battles. In general whats' shown in air shows is not relevant in combat, that's why it's shown. Nobody will show secrets to their enemies publicly. And if you take what's demonstrated on air shows, then you want something that's at least potentially useful, like the super agility of the Rafale, instead of airplanes that can stop midair and fall like a leaf, making them the easiest possible target for missiles.

      Agree with the irrelevance aspect. Looks cool for sure! Also if you watch F22 vids it appears the FBW limits the AOA to a relevant amount. In other words not killing all forward velocity as, has been said becoming stationary is pointless. It also recovers airspeed much quicker than the 57. Maybe the newer engines will improve this though. There’s no doubt conscious design decisions were made and more stealth was prioritised with the F22.

    How many thousands of hours did the pilot spend in the flight simulator before he wanted to attempt these flight maneuvers in the airplane? I wonder how these maneuvers can be used in the everyday life of war? Drones and surface-to-air missiles against aircraft are becoming increasingly intelligent. And the hypersonic missiles take on the job of destroying the enemy with the highest precision and effectiveness. I am sure that such high technology aircraft are a status symbol of Russia's innovative strength. A symbol of innovation and the ability to show what the Russians are capable of!💯💯💯👍👍👍

    Nice video as always . I saw the F-22 do a flat spin like this as well.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  Місяць тому +7

      Thanks! The Raptor can definitely flat spin and also do this maneuver (flatspin while flying horizontally), because the main driver for the maneuver are the differential stabs, which both aircraft have of similar shape and geometry, also placed with similar distances to CG. But the Su-57 has a lot more control over that maneuver, so it can do it in ways that the Raptor really can't. Plus, it has the TV nozzles to help! ;)

    • @whiffingherbs
      @whiffingherbs Місяць тому +1

      @Airguardian the f-22 has pitch thrust vectoring, and the pilot can manually differentiate thrust to have yaw tvc, and you don't really need roll when you're going like 50kts during that maneuver

    • @enriqueelresitas9901
      @enriqueelresitas9901 Місяць тому

      @@AirguardianI mean the raptor can do it too as the below comment tells. Just no need for it in doctrine.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  Місяць тому

      @@whiffingherbs You need yaw, more than you need roll to keep control of the aircraft, and although it may well be possible to use differential thrust to achieve it, the degree of control that gives is way worse than what thrust vectoring allows, first because of the delay in engine spool up and deceleration, and second because of the little leverage that each engine will exert since they are so close to the centerline on the Raptor.

      @Airguardian  Місяць тому

      They are all in testing stage, but that's not unlike any other modern combat aircraft project. These get dragged along for a long time. Arguably, they are quite mind blowing what they already offer for being just in the test stage compared to jets that even after reaching IOC were essentially useless in a real life scenario. If anything, the blame is with the delay in the development and testing of the new engines, not the airplane itself which is more than proven at this point.

Oh and China's J20 Mighty Dragon 500 units so that puts the su 57 in the pitts. It's just a F22 with engine problems that is what it is a failed F22 Raptor. I actually use to be fan of the Su 57 when it first came out back 2017 but since the developmental issues it put me off from liking it so Americans always win on fighters in case Turkey come in to the equation

  • @alphaomega154
    @alphaomega154 Місяць тому

    you can see its NOT happening like in the movie. in the movie the SU57 spins in mid air retaining its altitude. in the real life, you have seen it in the video, its stall for over 2 seconds straight vertical, gain some 700 feet-800 feet altitude and than VERY SLOWLY rotating as it losing altitude. that WILL NOT DODGE any missile. instead will put the plane in a sitting duck or more like floating duck position.
    the only logical function of it is to make bogey chasing close to overshoot. the same way the cobra intended to be. hollywood with its exaggeration.
    and like i have mentioned it often, in real world, by instinct, the bogey once seeing the chased plane pull hard vertical like that would immediately do a hard break left or right or follow along and pull vertical in full power. which if you follow that latter option up, it will put the cobra maneuvering sukhois in detrmimental position, when the overshoting bogey instead gaining high altitude flipping with its nose pointing down the now IN FRONT and below sukhoi.
    anybody who thinks you could aim your "brrrrrt" while you are stalling from a cobra or the "spinning" version of it accurately in real world situation is delusioning. even if you are very good with that little "joycap" on your flight stick.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  Місяць тому

      Strong disagree. The way I see it on the movie it also loses altitude. One way or another, there are difficulties to establish actual gain and loss of altitude in both cases due to perspective, but I've seen it with my own eyes, and I can tell you there's essentially no loss of altitude. One way or another, the maneuver can be performed in such a way that you lose altitude or not. It depends a lot on execution, starting speed and starting flight trajectory. Exactly the same as the cobra maneuver. If the maneuver will dodge a missile or not, I have no clue, and doubt you could know for sure either, but I agree with you that this maneuver makes more sense to force an overshoot when you have an opponent on your 6. You just make that move and after the other guy passes you by you could blow it out of the sky with a short range heatseeker. Of course, if there are other enemy jets around, you'd be doing yourself a poor favour by bleeding so much energy but that's not to say the capability is without its merits.
