Lovingggg this series, Asia! Being a dark skin Latina, I've def experienced colorism since I was a kid until now. It's really tough not only dealing with racism from outsiders, but when it comes to the ppl within your own community it really hurts! I talked about my experiences with colorism in the Latinx community in my channel if anyone wants to check it out!

I agree that colorism is a problem in the PH. Some Filipinos are definitely trying to fix this (although most do not practice what they preach). They would be very vocal about racism and colorism, but will do their best to not get their skin tanned when the sun's up.

"Decolonize our future" I think that literally sums up why this conversation is important, why it's not wrong to bring it up as a daily life struggle, and why we push for diversity of all races and cultures in society (literally also being 1/2 black 1/2 Filipino/ Filipina myself). Yes.

So, putting a perm on your head. And replacing your hair with weave, means you have bought into Colorium, alone with bleaching your skin. So I have witness , several race of people bleaching their skin and placing their own hair, with weave . Mexican, Asia, Filippo, Indian and Cacasian because, your own hair was a bit stubborn, skin tannin very easily, born with junk in the trunk, your Ancestors, allegily, crossed over and you did not know. Now it has come back to hunt, you! I think you are just as much a part of this, life long rejecting yourself. MAKING you, just as much, a part of this Colorism generation. If you want it to stop. Do not participate, with your finance!

At 62, it is still an issue in my life and thought processes. It's hard to get rid of when it's been deeply imbedded in your head.

    • @nirbija
      @nirbija 3 роки тому

Actually, that "issue" is not "hard to get rid of"; because it is not as "deeply embedded" as it APPEARS to be.
It is more the case that we have not been 'plumbing the depth' of the mind.
You see; the mind has deeper depths, and can 'grow new and joyous and bounteous shoots' from those depths, which the very superficial 'racists or colorists' can never ever touch.
If we live on the surface of the ocean, then we have to contend with the disrupting waves.
However, if we live beneath the surface, can the disrupting waves dare to disturb? No!
Same with the mind; it is like the deepest ocean.
The silly racist and colorist waves can exist only at the surface level of the mind.
The racist and colorists ARE NOT that "deep"!
They are shallow people, with shallow minds.

As a Black Woman, we have ingrained internalized racism. Our male counterparts have historically rejected us by choosing white/mixed women. They would tell us we're less than and ugly and not enough. It does a number on your self esteem!

Here in Argentina there's a lot of colorism too. In Buenos Aires (the center of the country) is where most of European immigrants stayed when escaping from WW1 & 2. So a lot of us here are decendents of eruopean immigrants, and mostly white. Native Argentinians have a more darker skin tone, and are often treated poorly because of that. It's crazy to me how the people that basically founded and created the place we're living in, are the ones being mistreated.

  • @itsherweng_

This is so true. Every person I know here in the Philippines would buy products from different countries, products that would surely whitened their skin. They say they're protecting their skin against the sun. Like okay, I get it, they don't want their skin to be harmed by the harsh sunrays. But wishing for another skin tone and not embracing yours is just a thing that I don't understand.

I remember in my final day of high school, a white classmate alerted me that all my fellow Asian-Australian classmates were taking pictures together and said I should be in it. When I approached the already formed group, they said that I didn’t need to be in it because I’m a (Proud Brown-skinned, Kayumanggi, Moreno) Filipino and if I were to be included, they’d have to call over another fellow Filipino and Indian descent friend who were not included either. So I walked away, knowing that the more East-Asian looking classmates felt more akin to each other, one of whom was even half-white and had talked about how they’re not really aware of their Asian identity, and that I was seen in a “different class” than the other Asian-Australians in my predominantly European-Australian school. I should’ve known though, a lot of freaking dumb people have misnomered me as “black”, even to this day, which is frustratingly ignorant, but oh well... I _~KNOW~_ I’m _✨fabulous✨_ and it’s thanks to people like you @Asia Jackson! 😄🙌🏾☀️🇵🇭🌟✨💎

Colorism exist in my country too, fairer girls will always get all the kindness , attention, and even in families people will tend to be kinder and willing to be seen in public with fairer babies.
My dad is mixed and my mum black, I'm one of the most dark skin child of the family and I've always received comments like , why are you darker than your brother's, it's going to be difficult for you to find a husband, maybe you should bleach just a little to reveal your skin tone . And this since my pre teenage years

In Arab culture it is definitely a result of colonization! Even outside of the historic colonization done in the Middle East, the West's control of and domination of global culture and media affects our beauty ideals. Arabs are sooo diverse in appearance, ranging in skin tones, hair types, and features and yet sometimes people are SHOCKED to meet dark skinned Arabs because the people allowed to represent us both in Western media and in Arab media fit a very narrow visual. In Arab culture I'm not considered "dark" but because I have olive undertones rather than fair/pink undertones I still face discrimination and am not seen as the ideal! It's crazy.

having darker skin as a chinese, things ppl say is big yikes, it relates to racism too. ppl just flat out comment on my skin colour and seasoned it with south asian racist comments when I was younger. also those "whitening" products including foods, ppl would recommend me to consume, including my mom, oooof.

I've heard my Black friends say things like he's cute for a dark skinned man, or I want my babies to be brown, but not too dark. I've heard people talk about having the perfect "skin tone" as well. I agree, colorism is trash, and it needs to be canceled.

@3:27 I wouldn’t call Negritos “black Asians”, that stems from a Spanish colonial term, and it denotes that the sole term “Asians” can’t include darker skinned, less East-Asiatic featured and curly haired peoples, perpetuating colonialist ideals that “other” some of the purest more native Asians you can find to this day. 🙌🏾☀️🇵🇭🌟✨

I’ve experienced colourism but in a “positive way”. I know that if I were darker, no one in the gay community would look at me.
It’s a hard pill to swallow, but the gay community doesn’t like dark males as much as they’d like to admit.
Of course you are not forced to like dark men but, the way the gay community treats men three shades darker than I am is insane.

Colorism in the Philippines 🇵🇭 Poor Anne Curtis probably just securing the bag with that endorsement but people really need to make better choices in life regardless if it hurts their income. MOST Pinoys are deeply affected by colonialism.. And they do live in a bubble. Regardless of all this coming to light, MOST will REFUSE to change their thoughts on colorism. It’s almost as if they like hurting themselves, as all of them are A SHADE brown.. and belittle themselves each day for it. The self hate is embarrassing and real. This goes for all other ethnic groups that are naturally brown (Indian one of the biggest culprit). The largest group of PROUD-to-be-brown people you’ll ever meet are those who live outside of their native country - imagine that!
